Slow Wave gets FDA dual clearance on the Slow Wave DS8™ for obstructive sleep apnea & bruxism marketed as BROSA™

Posted on Wednesday, September 25, 2024

The Slow Wave DS8™ oral appliance therapy (OAT), initially FDA cleared for the prescription treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in 2021 (K191320) has now been dual cleared by the FDA for the treatment of sleep bruxism (K240463). This makes the Slow Wave DS8, now marketed as BROSA™ when sold as a bruxism device by a dentist, the only dual cleared OSA/Bruxism prescription treatment available in the United States. While prescription devices for the treatment of OSA require a physician diagnosis and treatment prescription, sleep bruxism is classified as a dental condition that is treated by a dentist. The patient overlap in the two sleep conditions is significant with studies showing that up to 50% of people who suffer from sleep bruxism also have OSA.1,2,3

“The FDA dual clearance now means that patients can see a dentist to treat their Sleep Bruxism and monitor their sleep using over-the-counter FDA-approved oxygen monitoring devices like the Apple Watch™ or various sleep rings to assess their risk of OSA,” stated Slow Wave, Inc.® CEO Wayne Wagner. “This can help the 80% of current OSA sufferers who are undiagnosed4,5 quickly get treated, then validate their concerns if a formal diagnosis and/or other medical help is still needed. In the meantime, the Slow Wave BROSA may be able to provide them relief for both conditions simultaneously. This approach will revolutionize and modernize the dental sleep world.”

Sleep Bruxism is a repetitive jaw masseter muscle movement disorder in which a person grinds or clenches their teeth and is a relatively common sleep disorder according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that affects about 13% of adults.6 But unlike most devices used by dentists today, the Slow Wave DS8 actually treats the condition, not just the side effects of the condition. “Most bruxism devices on the market today are single-arch solutions” continued Wagner. “They typically cover just the upper teeth with the objective of stopping the effects of grinding. But this approach doesn’t treat the underlying condition, it just saves the teeth. The DS8/BROSA, through a patented design, actually relaxes the muscles of the jaw during sleep which serves as a treatment for bruxism.”

The Slow Wave DS8 is a custom-fitted prescription oral appliance that incorporates a patented vertical opening and ramp design that allows the mandible (lower jaw) to move down and forward in a natural position opening the airway during sleep. This approach ensures maximum patient comfort while making more room for the tongue to naturally migrate forward, clearing the airway during sleep. Because the device components cover both the upper and lower teeth arches, it is virtually impossible for a user to grind the teeth while wearing the appliance. However, the ramp design is different from other OAT products in that it does not lock the jaw into a static position all night as a method of keeping the airway open during sleep. Instead, it allows the brain of the user to move the tongue forward into a horizontal and vertical opening that is large enough for the tongue to return to its natural resting position during sleep. This eliminates the need for a morning repositioner to realign the jaw, a condition warranted by most traditional oral appliances.

The Slow Wave DS8 utilizes an intraoral closed bite scan and 3D printing technologies to produce a custom-fitted oral appliance that does not need to be adjusted by a dentist. Products can be printed directly in a dentist’s office if they have a Formlabs printer and are generally available to patients within 24 – 48 hours of them receiving an intraoral scan.

Slow Wave, Inc. is headquartered in Spicewood, Texas, with lab and manufacturing near Austin, Texas. The company has 10 patents issued on the Slow Wave DS8 design with additional patents pending. The Slow Wave DS8 is the only dual FDA-cleared product on the market for the prescription treatment of both OSA and bruxism (marketed as BROSA). Slow Wave can be reached at (830) 220-5700. www.slowwave.net

DEXIS expands digital ecosystem with three new innovations to connect and streamline dental workflows

Posted on Tuesday, September 24, 2024

At the start of 2024, DEXIS introduced its digital ecosystem, a suite of tools and software designed to connect and streamline the implant workflow from diagnosis to delivery.

Today, DEXIS announced new offerings across the ecosystem to aid clinicians in important workflow elements from visualizing progressive dental issues to designing chairside surgical guides.

“Our technology makes it easy to organize information and execute treatments, which is at the core of what clinicians expect from us,” said DEXIS President, Robert Befidi. “We are connecting and standardizing the implant workflow while also constantly evaluating our efforts to ensure we provide deeper patient insights and flexible, intuitive solutions that reduce complexity. These three launches are consistent with our focus on continuous innovation across the ecosystem to deliver diagnostic confidence, productivity, and smart simplicity.”

A brand-new X-ray platform is now available, designed specifically for general practitioners looking to expand their diagnostic capabilities with 3D imaging. The ORTHOPANTOMOGRAPH™ OP 3D™ EX captures consistently accurate images through a simple, easy-to-learn workflow. The unit has a wide range of field of view sizes to support multiple clinical indications including implant placement, endodontics, periodontics, and analysis for airway and TMJ. Early adopters of the OP 3D EX have reported positive feedback:

“When choosing a CBCT, the key factors for me were a large sensor, predictable acquisition, stellar image quality and intuitive software that wouldn’t interrupt my workflow,” says Dr. Tyler Tolbert of Smile Now Dental Group. “Once the OP 3D EX got here and we started taking some scans, I thought to myself, ‘We really made the right choice here!’”

In addition to new hardware, a brand-new software release will provide advanced tools to plan and execute same-day, prosthetically driven implants.

Serving as the unifying software and central hub of the ecosystem, DTX Studio™ Clinic stores and manages all patient data as well as helps clinicians execute each step of the implant process from diagnostics to delivery.

The software’s new functionality allows practitioners to plan an implant treatment and generate a surgical guide chairside – all in less than 3 minutes. Clinicians can virtually extract teeth, adjust photorealistic abutments and crowns, and create an automated surgical guide that can be sent to a lab or produced in-house for same-day delivery.

“We were able to implement the OP 3D EX quickly and start taking scans largely due to the included DTX Studio Clinic software,” said Dr. Nicholas Varney of Varney Dental. “Once we got going, we found that so much of the work involved in prepping a 3D scan for confident diagnosis was done by the software automatically. DTX Studio Clinic has improved how we work in all aspects – communicating with patients, implant planning and even treatment team collaboration.”

In addition to 3D imaging enhancements, an intraoral scanning software update offers scan quality and usability improvements as well as clear visualizations of progressive dental issues over time, through a new tool called Oral Compare. Additionally, the software’s new integration with SmileFy allows for the ability to simulate treatment outcomes chairside, giving patients further confidence in proposed treatment plans.

Clinicians also have the ability to access their intraoral scan data through a newly launched Cloud solution – DEXIS IS Connect Cloud. Datasets can easily be shared with partners, and clinicians can access their intraoral scan data anytime, anywhere, through the Cloud.

PDS Health is a Six-Time Civic 50 Orange County Honoree for Continuing Commitment to Community Service

Posted on Tuesday, September 24, 2024

PDS Health™, a leading dental and medical support organization, has once again been recognized in the annual The Civic 50 Orange County, an honor given to the 50 most community-minded companies in the region. This prestigious accolade is awarded by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, in partnership with OneOC, a nonprofit committed to accelerating nonprofit success in Orange County, Calif. This year marks the sixth time PDS Health has received this honor, having previously been recognized in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2019 and 2017.

The selection process involves an independently administered and scored survey that evaluates companies based on four key dimensions of engagement: resource investment, integration across business functions, institutionalization through policies and systems, and the measurement of social impact.

In the spring, Points of Light named PDS Health one of The Civic 50 honorees of 2024, a national accolade given to companies with annual U.S. revenues of at least $1 billion.

“We are honored to be recognized once again as one of the Civic 50 Orange County by Points of Light and OneOC,” said Stephen E. Thorne IV, Founder and CEO of PDS Health. “This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to serving our communities and reflects the dedication of our team members who consistently go above and beyond to make a positive impact. Our commitment to service is about cultivating a spirit of compassion that transforms our own hearts and minds. Serving others enriches us, changing our perspectives on what truly matters, and drives us to make a lasting difference in the lives of those around us.”

Since its founding in 1994, PDS Health has established an important tradition and culture of service, providing assistance locally, regionally, and around the world. PDS Health practices organize donation drives, support local food banks, and participate in charitable partnerships through sponsorships, and offer team members paid volunteer time for their chosen organizations. They collaborate on building playgrounds with KABOOM! and lend their support to Special Olympics. At the company’s annual Smile Generation Serve Day held recently, 14,000 team members came together nationwide to provide 87,000 volunteer hours and $16.5 million in donated dental services and community support.

PDS Health is equally dedicated to international philanthropic initiatives, engaging in both fundraising and hands-on service trips. Earlier this year, PDS Health reached a notable milestone by raising more than

$1.45 million for communities in Ethiopia through charity: water, which provides clean and safe drinking water to underserved communities in developing nations. Additionally, PDS Health clinical and non- clinical volunteers regularly travel to Guatemala, where they work at the PDS Foundation Clínica Dental, mentoring dental students and providing essential care and service to local communities. These initiatives demonstrate the profound and lasting impact of PDS Health's global efforts.

PDS Health remains dedicated to its purpose of creating healthier, happier patients through meaningful service and compassionate care. By cultivating a culture of volunteerism and engagement, the organization strives to improve lives both locally and globally.

Aspire Public Schools, Smile Generation and KABOOM! Unveil Kid-Designed, Community-Built Playground in Modesto, CA

Posted on Tuesday, September 24, 2024

MODESTO, CALIF. (Sept. 23, 2024) – Over the weekend, students at Aspire Summit Charter Academy in Modesto celebrated the reveal of their new kid-designed, community-built playground. The collaboration between Aspire Public Schools, Smile Generation and KABOOM! culminated with a ribbon- cutting after volunteers built the playspace over three days with input from students.

At the entrance of the new playground is a bilingual communication board for students who are nonverbal autistic. Aspire Summit Charter Academy’s student body is 70% Latino and the board will help ensure all students can express themselves and play together. Students can point to pictures on the sign to communicate their thoughts and needs.

The project is part of a nationwide effort led by KABOOM! to make playspaces more accessible for all. Community members led the creation of the playground, from design to installation. In July, students from Aspire Summit Charter Academy began working on drawings of their dream playspaces and these ideas were integrated into the new playground design that hundreds of children will enjoy each year.

Aspire Public Schools believes that for students to be best prepared for success in college, career, and life, they must be supported holistically and that includes a safe, joyful place to play.

“It’s essential to us that we offer our scholars a positive academic environment and joyful opportunities for play and creativity,” said Zack Dickinson, principal of Aspire Summit Charter Academy. “We are so proud of our scholars who submitted their creative ideas that have been worked into this playspace design and we are deeply thankful to our community partners whose support has been instrumental in bringing this to life. It is truly wonderful to see that our youngest scholars will now have their very own developmentally appropriate space where they can explore, learn, grow, and experience the joy of play.”

Playing is a critical developmental need that provides countless physical, social, and mental health benefits to children. KABOOM! is leading an effort to bring more playgrounds to students, especially in under-resourced communities. The new playground – tailored to meet the school’s needs – will help ensure that all students can enjoy playtime together.

“Places to play are iconic parts of childhood where kids collect some of their best memories and experience the countless physical and mental health benefits of play,” said Lysa Ratliff, CEO of KABOOM!. “KABOOM! is excited to partner with Smile Generation and Aspire Public Schools to ensure that kids in Modesto have access to what they need to have a happy and healthy childhood."

Since 2010, Smile Generation has partnered with KABOOM! to build playgrounds across the U.S. This project marked the 20th build, furthering the shared effort to end playspace inequity and ensure all kids, regardless of where they live, have a place to play.

“We’re proud and honored to be a part of this 20th playground build, especially as we combine playground equity and oral health equity,” said Toreano Norris, Smile Generation Regional Parter. “The fact that – in addition to providing students with a safe, fun place to play – the playground will also ensure that students with different needs or abilities can enjoy this space is especially gratifying.”

About KABOOM!

KABOOM! is the national nonprofit committed to ending playspace inequity – the reality that quality places to play are not available to every child, especially in communities of color. Since 1996, KABOOM! has partnered with kids and communities to build or improve 17,000+ playspaces and ensure that nearly 12 million kids have equitable access to the crucial benefits and opportunities that playspaces offer. In 2022, KABOOM! launched the 25 in 5 Initiative to End Playspace Inequity to accelerate its mission in 25 high-priority locations over five years.
