Centrix Adds New DraganBerry Flavor to its FluoroDose® Fluoride Varnish Line

Posted on Friday, September 6, 2024

To commemorate its founder, Dr. William Dragan, and his 90th birthday this year, Centrix has added a delightful new flavor, DraganBerry, to its award-winning line of FluoroDose® fluoride varnish.

This special berry blend was inspired by Dr. Dragan’s memories of stories his grandmother told him of growing up in what was then known as the historic Kingdom of Galicia, and today is part of Poland and Ukraine. She would tell of warm summer days spent picking sweet berries from the local forests which she turned into delicious treats.

Today, as a tribute to Dr. Dragan on this milestone birth year, we have tried to re-create the taste of his youth and this delicious berry flavor. We are excited to introduce DraganBerry™, our newest FluoroDose fluoride varnish flavor! Both children and adults alike will be delighted by this delicious and very special flavor.

Penn Dental, PHMC, and Henry Schein Cares Host Community Briefing on Expanding Access to Oral Health Care

Posted on Thursday, September 5, 2024

Penn Dental Medicine and Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), along with Henry Schein Cares, hosted a community briefing September 4 on expanding access to oral health care and improving positive health outcomes through PHMC Dental on Cedar, Penn Dental Medicine’s latest community care site.

Leadership from Penn Dental Medicine, PHMC, and Henry Schein Cares convened local community members and clinical care providers at the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar to highlight the integration and co-location of physical and oral health and the positive impact of this new resource on the community. The program included remarks by Michael K. Pearson, President and Chief Executive Officer of PHMC; Mark S. Wolff, DDS, PhD, Morton Amsterdam Dean of Penn Dental Medicine; and Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc.

“Having a dental care center as part of a facility with other health care services is a model for building community wellness. Individuals can’t have good overall health without good oral health – they are implicitly linked,” said Dean Wolff. “At the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar, patients can easily access both dental and medical care, and clinicians across disciplines are building patient awareness of the oral and systemic health connection.”

PHMC Dental, which opened in January 2024, is part of the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar, an innovative and integrated public health campus serving West and Southwest Philadelphia at 54th Street and Cedar Avenue. The Campus also includes the PHMC Health Center on Cedar, a federally qualified health center (FQHC), and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) Cedar, which provides emergency, inpatient, and behavioral health services. Additionally, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) offers a crisis response center for pediatric mental and behavioral health emergencies, including a stabilization unit and acute inpatient psychiatry services.

The dental care center features 11 state-of-the art dental operatories with care provided by Penn Dental Medicine DMD students as well as faculty and residents from the School’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. Henry Schein Cares, Henry Schein’s global corporate citizenship program, contributed to equipping the space, including a groundbreaking health information system.

“For many decades, Henry Schein has worked to expand equitable access to quality, affordable health care for all, and we are pleased to join Penn Dental Medicine and PHMC to ‘help health happen’ for the local community,” said Mr. Bergman. “Integrated, preventive care, such as regular dental check-ups and cleanings, is essential in achieving optimal oral and overall health. Through PHMC Dental on Cedar, patients will have access to comprehensive care that will in turn help contribute to a healthier quality of life.”

To support the oral/systemic health connections, patients’ dental and health records are being integrated at the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar with Penn Dental Medicine’s electronic health records, expanding access to care and Penn Dental Medicine’s resources. In addition, video resources have been developed for medical and allied-medical providers that focus on actionable oral health issues throughout the lifespan with the goal of developing interprofessional protocols to enact better oral/systemic management with measured outcomes.

“PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar was founded on the principles of delivering collaborative, patient-centered care to the local community,” said Michael Pearson, president and CEO, PHMC. “The addition of high-quality dental services expands the Campus’ continuum of care and improves access to comprehensive health care for our neighbors in West and Southwest Philadelphia.”

PHMC Dental on Cedar is one of Penn Dental Medicine’s five community care programs that also include Puentes de Salud (serving the Latinx immigrant population at 1700 South Street), Mercy LIFE (serving seniors in West Philadelphia), PennSmiles mobile vehicle (serving children in schools and camps in West Philadelphia), and Woods Mikey Faulkner Dental Care Center (serving individuals with special health care needs in Langhorne). Last year, Penn Dental Medicine had more than 25,000 patient visits at its community care centers.

Certificate Program for RDHs Earns Prestigious ANSI Accreditation

Posted on Thursday, September 5, 2024

National Network of Healthcare Hygienists (NNHH) is proud to announce that their groundbreaking Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program has been officially accredited by ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), the largest multi-disciplinary accreditation body in the western hemisphere, marking it as the first dental certificate program in the world to receive such recognition. This landmark achievement underscores the program's commitment to excellence and its role in setting a global standard for education in the field of oral health integration.

A Milestone for Oral Systemic Health Education

The accreditation of the Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program is a testament to the rigorous standards, comprehensive curriculum, and innovative teaching methodologies employed by NNHH. Designed to empower registered dental hygienists (RDH) with missing knowledge and practical skills, the program emphasizes the critical role of the RDH as a missing collaborative care team member in healthcare systems.

The First to Follow Both AGD PACE & ANAB Standards

The Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program has now met or exceeded the standards set forth by the Academy of General Dentistry’s Program Approval for Continuing Education (AGD PACE) through a joint providership with UpScale Education, as well as the global standards of ASTM E2659-18 for certificate programs through ANAB. It took two years for ANAB to comb through evidence submitted by NNHH, allowing time for refinement of content that did not meet the standard. With ANSI accreditation, the ethics and sustainability of the organization and its leadership, as well as all major components of the individual program itself, are thoroughly examined; offering a mark of quality and excellence above “approved CE.”

NNHH has raised the bar on continuing education in dental hygiene (and in all of dentistry), as well as created new career pathways for RDHs.

Commitment to Excellence

“The accreditation of our Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program is not just a milestone for us, but a giant leap forward for the entire healthcare industry, addressing a workforce gap," said Jamie Dooley, founder of National Network of Healthcare Hygienists. "This recognition validates our commitment to preparing RDHs to work in integrated settings, and sets a new global standard for specialty certificate programs in dentistry.”

Filling a Crucial Gap in Healthcare Education

With the increasing recognition of the link between oral health and systemic diseases, the need for specialized education in this area has never been more critical. NNHHs accredited program addresses this gap, offering RDHs the opportunity to become certificate holders in oral systemic education, filtering unbiased, unsponsored, research based data and protocols to practicing hygienists, while also becoming key team players in true patient centered care.

“Many people do not know that RDHs are comparable to RNs in education level, continuing education requirements, and licensing. We are educated, passionate healthcare providers, who are experts in assessing oral health, preventing oral-systemic disease, and educating both providers and patients on the latest techniques, products and research,” Dooley stated.

An Example of Excellence

Brianne Carter is an RDH and Certificate Holder of Oral Systemic Education (CH-OSE). While completing her Capstone Project, she developed an integrative pilot program offering oral health education and referrals in her system’s women’s clinic. The results were so successful that she was promoted to dental director and now supervises a team of integrated RDHs working in multiple specialty clinics system-wide. The first thing she does is enroll them in the Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program.

“Ideally, every specialty medical office should have at least one integrated RDH (I-RDH) trained in oral-systemic health and education available to assess, educate, refer to a dental home, and follow up, as well as educate and collaborate with medical teams for true health equity that finally includes oral health…we are proud to be on the leading edge of this model in action,” Carter said.

About the National Network of Healthcare Hygienists

National Network of Healthcare Hygienists is the leading organization dedicated to offering accredited certificate programs to RDHs with a desire to work in specialty areas of medicine. Through its innovative programs and collaborative initiatives, NNHH is committed to making it easy for hygienists with specialized knowledge to share their expertise with each other, advancing the entire profession into a new era.

NNHH also partners with individuals and organizations who would like to fast track offering accredited certificate programs to RDHs. Three new programs are slated to launch in 2025 through collaborative efforts.

Henry Schein One Introduces Dentrix Eligibility Offerings

Posted on Thursday, September 5, 2024

Henry Schein One today announced Eligibility Essentials and Eligibility Pro, two powerful tools designed to simplify the insurance eligibility process for dental practices, available now for Dentrix and Dentrix Ascend. Eligibility Essentials streamlines access to accurate, up-to-date insurance data from an extensive network of payors presented in a clear, uniform format directly within Dentrix. Eligibility Pro, an advanced option, goes even further by pulling in additional benefits data from payor portals, reducing the time staff spend manually gathering information, and allowing patients to make better-informed decisions regarding treatment.

Eligibility verification has traditionally been a time-consuming process, with dental staff members spending valuable time logging into patient portals and calling payors for eligibility data one patient at a time. The standard Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) connections often do not deliver responses from many payors, and when they do, the information is frequently incomplete. This forces staff to call help lines or access payor portals for required coverage data.

Eligibility Essentials reduces administrative burden, and empowers dental practices with fast, accurate coverage insights — all within the trusted platform the dental profession has come to rely on. Eligibility data from each payor is returned in a standardized PDF format, automatically saved to the document center, and will populate in the patient’s insurance tables. This consistency makes it easy to find and use the necessary information for treatment planning.

Taking insurance verification to the next level, Eligibility Pro unlocks more benefits data by delivering information from payor portals in addition to the EDI data provided by Essentials. This includes patient history, frequency limitations, procedure-level coverage percentages, remaining benefits, and network coverage. By eliminating the need to log into multiple insurance portals, the dental staff saves valuable time, and treatment plan acceptance may improve since patients better understand their coverage and out-of-pocket expenses.

“Dentrix Eligibility Essentials and Pro help foster trust between dental practices and patients by minimizing insurance surprises,” said Dr. Ryan Hungate, Chief Clinical Officer, Henry Schein One. “As a care catalyst, Henry Schein One empowers practices with detailed benefit information, enabling accurate discussions about treatment plans and financial responsibilities with patients. This leads to happier, more satisfied patients who are more likely to remain loyal to and recommend the practice. Looking ahead, we'll continue to push boundaries to support our customers in managing insurance eligibility.”

Dawson Family Dentistry, located in Danville, Illinois, recently beta-tested Eligibility Pro. “Eligibility Pro has cut patient processing time in half. Hygienists can check coverage instantly, and the confidence it brings has transformed our workflow,” said Amy Kaminski, Business Manager at Dawson Family Dentistry. “I have hygienists who will look at the breakdown to find out if they can do fluoride, to know if they can do bite wings, and it saves them from having to message the front-desk team during the day. It's right there for them to check.”

This new addition is not just another dental chair; it’s a significant leap forward in the field, offering unique features designed to enhance both patient comfort and practitioner well-being.

Standing Tall Among the Rest

The Forest 6400 is among an exclusive group of dental chairs capable of accommodating stand-up dentistry, with an impressive, reclined height of 36.5 inches. This feature is particularly beneficial for taller practitioners and those who prefer to stand for certain procedures, allowing them to maintain proper ergonomic posture and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

“As a certified ergonomics assessment specialist, I can attest to the importance of ergonomics in preventing work-related pain,” says Katrina Klein, also a registered dental hygienist with over 25 years in the industry. “The Forest 6400 addresses these concerns by offering a chair that supports both seated and standing dentistry, promoting healthier practices for dental professionals.”

New Heights of Comfort and Customization

Dual paint, dual upholstery, and custom stitching options mean that the Forest 6400 can be tailored to match any office style.

Smart Technology for the Modern Practice

One of the most exciting advancements in the Forest 6400 is the integration of Aeras Intel. This smart technology enables real-time monitoring of chair performance, including ambient temperature, vacuum levels, and even potential leaks. With a smart chip and antenna built into the control board, the chair connects to the cloud, allowing for detailed tracking of patient time in the chair, both during consultations and treatments.

“By monitoring chair data, dental practices can optimize efficiency and anticipate maintenance needs,” says Todd Patterson, VP Marketing at DENTALEZ®. “This proactive approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also provides peace of mind, knowing that potential issues can be identified and addressed before they become problems.”

Value That Stands Out

Dentsply Sirona presents Primescan® 2 powered by DS Core: The first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution

Posted on Thursday, September 5, 2024

Dentsply Sirona’s next-generation intraoral scanner opens a new era of digital patient care, allowing scanning directly to the cloud on any internet-connected device.

Cloud-native, wireless, and highly versatile — this is Primescan 2. Building upon the proven1 scanning technology of Primescan and with the ability to scan directly to the cloud on any internet-connected device, Primescan 2 can help practices expand their treatment offerings, save time in daily workflows, and deliver enhanced care and comfort to their patients.

Dentsply Sirona (Nasdaq: XRAY) continues to pave the way for the future of digital dentistry with the introduction of a new, versatile, and innovative intraoral scanner: Primescan 2. Powered by the DS Core cloud platform2, the new wireless scanner is cloud-native, meaning it can scan on any internet-connected mobile or desktop device — without needing a dedicated computer. With improved workflow efficiency and extended treatment capabilities3, when compared to Primescan AC and Primescan Connect, Primescan 2 allows practices to expand the services they offer to patients and grow their business. Meanwhile, improved communication and diagnostic tools help dental professionals deliver a high standard of care and comfort.

Primescan 2 benefits for dental practices

Hardware-independence: Cloud-native solution operating on any device with an internet browser and enabled DS Core features.

Versatility: Wireless and easy to move. With Primescan 2, scan any patient, anytime, anywhere.

Simple handling: Sleek and well-balanced design with a narrower tip, allowing for easier access to molars or distal surfaces.

Fast workflow: A full arch scan can be taken in less than 1 minute while delivering excellent accuracy.

Ease of delegation: Easy to delegate the scanning work to other dental professionals in the practice team. During treatment, only the affected teeth have to be rescanned.

Always up to date: DS Core always runs on the latest version, eliminating the need for manual software updates.

Primary storage in the cloud: Reduces the need for additional scan storage costs in the practice.

Reliable hygiene: Comprehensive hygiene concept with closed design around the field of view, convenient single-use sleeves, and optional multi-use steel sleeve with sapphire glass (anticipated launch in Q4).

“Primescan 2 is more than just an intraoral scanner — it provides new momentum for dental practices navigating today's rapidly evolving landscape. Designed with the future in mind, Primescan 2 is transformative in its field, empowering dental professionals to confidently meet the demands of their patients by delivering simplicity, efficiency, and versatility,” said Simon Campion, President & CEO at Dentsply Sirona. “This solution not only enhances the patient experience but also supports practice growth. With Primescan 2, we enable our users to stay ahead of the curve, thriving in a dynamic environment while focusing on what truly matters — providing exceptional patient care.”

Delivering versatility and simplicity

Primescan 2 is based on the patented scanning technology of Primescan — combining the speed, accuracy, and ease of use of the original scanner with new cloud-native capabilities made possible through direct integration with DS Core. As a cloud-native intraoral scanner, Primescan 2 allows dental professionals to scan anytime, anywhere — including visits to hospitals, partner practices, or labs — using any laptop, computer, tablet, or other internet-connected device at hand.

The scan data is automatically processed and stored on DS Core, meaning that patient consultations, lab ordering, and treatment planning can take place independently on any internet-connected device available. The scanning workflow on DS Core is intuitive and simple to use, allowing for easy delegation to dental professionals within the practice team so they can advance together with confidence in this new era of digital patient care. The scanning device itself is only needed for the scan itself, so the device is immediately ready to be used on the next patient after the scan is complete. There is no need for software updates, as these are ready for use with every login to DS Core, and data can be shared with partners, labs, or even patients via DS Core.

“Primescan 2 is a lot more than a wireless scanner, it's all I need to scan every patient,” explained Dr. Marko Ahonen, dentist and beta-tester from Hämeenlinna, Finland. “Not only can I use it anywhere in my practice without being tied to a specific computer, but I can also confidently apply it to a wide range of treatments, from basic restorative cases to more complex interventions and specialized procedures.”

Opportunities for practice growth and high case acceptance

The new intraoral scanner is an excellent way to start a broad range of treatments and reliably delivers highly accurate scan data for great patient outcomes. Primescan 2 creates excellent conditions for patient communication and treatment acceptance, especially for more complex cases like implant treatments. DS Core’s Communication Canvas allows the oral situation and treatment proposal to be clearly displayed side-by-side and explained using all necessary files (scan, X-ray, intraoral images).

With the use of the SureSmile™ Simulator, dentists can preview the potential new smile of a patient in just minutes to visually demonstrate the scope of treatment, fostering confident treatment decisions.4

And there are even more possibilities for practices to expand patient services and help grow their business with Primescan 2. It can be an excellent starting point for in-house fabrication using the CEREC workflow or with a 3D printer such as Primeprint Solution. Scanning, design, and fabrication are all decoupled from each other to offer great flexibility in practice workflows.

Enhanced patient care and thorough hygiene

The size and outer shape of the scanner tip have been redesigned with Primescan 2 making intraoral scanning even more comfortable for patients — helping dental professionals easily scan molars and hard-to-reach distal surfaces.

Intraoral scanners must meet the highest hygiene standards. While Primescan already fulfills these, Primescan 2 comes with single-use closed sleeves for a high-level of ease of use, scan performance and hygiene, a multi-use steel closed sleeve5 will be available optionally. Primescan 2 also has a tapping sensor for hygienic and ergonomic usage. Users can start and end the scanning process, change catalogs, and switch from 3D to 2D images with just a tap of the finger.

“With Primescan 2, we open a new era of digital patient care,” said Max Milz, Group Vice President, Connected Technology Solutions at Dentsply Sirona. “Celebrating a milestone in digital dentistry, our latest innovation is the world's first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution. As we strive for a future centered around DS Core, this innovative technology serves as a testament to our commitment to fostering the digital universe of dentistry. By empowering dental professionals to enhance their skills with confidence, we're driving transformative change for a healthy future.”

VELMENI® Receives FDA Clearance

Posted on Wednesday, September 4, 2024

VELMENI announced on Sep 03, 2024, it received FDA 510(k) clearance for VELMENI for DENTISTS, an innovative AI that analyzes and annotates dental X-Rays.

VELMENI for DENTISTS (V4D) assists dentists in the detection of dental caries, fillings/restorations, fixed prostheses, and implants in digital bitewing, periapical, and panoramic radiographs of permanent teeth in patients 15 years of age or older.

VELMENI is the first dental AI approved by the FDA to detect pathologies in panoramic X-Rays. VELMENI for DENTISTS adds its US FDA clearance to existing Canadian MDEL and New Zealand MEDSAFE clearances.

VELMENI for DENTISTS’s AI-driven computer-aided clinical radiology solution is available to dentists throughout North America, Canada and many other parts of the world.

VELMENI collaborated closely with over 50 dentists, clinical members of VELMENI’s dental board, and 1300 dentists participating in a beta program that provided valuable and insightful feedback. Over 90% of dentists agreed VELMENI's AI technology could be very helpful and said they would adopt it in their dental practice.

“Finally I have an AI that works with panoramic radiographs!”

—Pedram Eli Mastour, DDS

Former Asst. Prof, USC & Private Practice CA

Many dental conditions are difficult to see in dental X-Rays. The VELMENI AI reveals numerous pathologies, increasing diagnostic accuracy.

“As a follower of the latest advances in digital dentistry, I’m keeping my eye on VELMENI!”

—Ed Zuckerberg, DDS

Renowned Dentist & Key Advisor to VELMENI

Each finding is evaluated and accepted or rejected by the dentist to ensure diagnoses and treatment decisions are made by a human dental expert.

Because of VELMENI’s “crowdsourced” design, every time a dentist accepts or rejects the AI’s findings, that real world data contributes to future releases making the product smarter and more accurate for everyone.

VELMENI is pioneering new developments in the analysis of 3D/CBCT scans, virtual reality, immersive patient education, and more. Our ultimate goal is to bring quality dental care to a billion underserved patients around the world.

“VELMENI creates innovative technologies that impact patients, dentists, and the world.”

—Mini Suri, CEO, VELMENI

VELMENI is a global leader in dental artificial intelligence, helping both payers and providers improve patient care. VELMENI's AI integrates with existing practice management and dental imaging software to help dentists deliver high-quality care, improve patient acceptance, and automate administrative tasks.

VELMENI thanks all those who believed in our product, and invested their time and financial resources to make this dream a reality.
