Great Gums’ Patented Bioelectric Toothbrush Launches in the U.S.

Posted on Monday, September 23, 2024

Great Gums, an innovator in oral care, is excited to announce the launch of its revolutionary products, the Great Gums One and the Great Gums Clinical Grade toothbrushes.

Utilizing patented bioelectric technology, these toothbrushes are designed to offer superior plaque removal and enhance overall oral health, setting a new standard in oral care.

“The introduction of Great Gums and bioelectric brushing represents a major advancement in oral care technology,” said Dr. Silvana Barros, DDS, former Senior Director of Clinical Innovation at Colgate and an advisor to Great Gums. “Powered by advanced bioelectric effect (BE) technology, its non-invasive design provides a deeper, more thorough removal of debris, even in hard-to-reach areas, helping users maintain healthier gums and teeth with greater ease. This innovation is poised to make daily dental care more efficient, effective, and accessible for all, elevating the standard of oral hygiene.”

What’s Bioelectric Technology All About?

The Great Gums toothbrushes harness bioelectric technology that creates an imperceptible electromagnetic field around the bristles. This field delivers 10 million waves per second to effectively disrupt and remove plaque from teeth, braces, implants, and dentures, areas that are often difficult to reach with traditional toothbrushes.

The Great Gums launch brings bioelectricity in toothbrushes to America. Over 600,000 bioelectric brushes have been sold in Korea with over 20,000 reviews since 2020. The company has refined, enhanced, and reduced the cost of the brush through 12 versions to launch the Great Gums One Toothbrush for under $30. It has become a cult favorite in Korea and is now ready for the rest of the world.

How It Differs from Sonic and Other Electric Toothbrushes

Since the invention of the first electric toothbrush 73 years ago, technology has evolved. Oscillating-rotating and sonic brushes rely on mechanical movements—rotating or vibrating at high speeds—to physically scrub away plaque. In contrast, bioelectric brushing cleans through electrical stimulation rather than physical movement, making it more gentle and thorough than traditional electric brushes.

Two Versions of the Toothbrush

• Great Gums One: Designed for preventative care, this model is ideal for everyday use to maintain optimal oral hygiene and prevent plaque buildup and cavities. It is available now for $29.95, with a 25% discount for qualified dental professionals.

• Great Gums Clinical Grade: Priced at $200 and sold via the dental channel, this model is suited for individuals needing enhanced care, such as those with gum disease or post-dental surgery. It is rechargeable and features more powerful bioelectric technology and three brush heads for superior plaque removal and improved gum health.

Clinically Proven Results

The effectiveness of Great Gums toothbrushes is backed by clinical studies. Research shows the bioelectric toothbrushes are six times more effective at targeting hard-to-remove plaque compared to ordinary toothbrushes. They also achieve a 67% improvement in cleaning interdental surfaces, a 75% reduction in gum inflammation, and a 59% reduction in bleeding. Details can be found at: https://getgreatgums.com/pages/clinical-trials-research.

14 Patents and Counting

Great Gums’ bioelectric technology is protected by 14 issued patents, underscoring the uniqueness and innovation behind the products. This technology not only cleans better but also promotes healthier gums, reducing the risk of gum disease and other oral health issues.

Partnerships with Prominent Dentists

Great Gums has collaborated with dentists including Dr. Thomas Kang, Dr. Nicholas Koogler, Dr. Ian Shuman and Dr. Jeremy Ueno. Dr. Kang has validated the technology in his practice, using it with his patients and leading a dental clinic pilot program to expand the reach of Great Gums’ innovative toothbrushes.

Our Mission is Ubiquity

“We are excited to introduce our patented bioelectric toothbrush technology to the dental community,” said Mark H Goldstein, CEO and Co-Founder of Great Gums and Chairman of the Digital Health Hub Foundation. “Our long-term vision is to have our proven and cost-effective bioelectricity embedded in all toothbrushes by 2027, and work with the dental community to make that happen. We want to help our customers prevent plaque buildup and reduce the risk of gum disease. Our clinical data speaks for itself.”

Carbon, Inc., a trailblazer in high-volume custom manufacturing, is proud to announce an exciting milestone in its ongoing partnership with Keystone Industries: the successful printing of 1,000,000 dental parts using Keystone’s trusted materials on Carbon’s advanced 3D printers. This achievement underscores the strength of the collaboration between Carbon and Keystone, two industry leaders who continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in digital dentistry.

A Partnership Built on Innovation and Trust

The partnership between Carbon and Keystone Industries began with a shared vision: to revolutionize dental manufacturing by combining cutting-edge technology with world-class materials. This vision came to life with the release of KeySplint Soft Clear, a groundbreaking material that offers advanced comfort, durability, and aesthetics to dental appliances. KeySplint Soft Clear was explicitly designed for Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis™ (DLS™) technology, enabling dental labs to produce high-quality, patient-specific parts with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

Since introducing KeySplint Soft Clear, the relationship between Carbon and Keystone has only grown stronger. Together, the two companies have continued to innovate, developing new materials and processes that empower dental labs to meet the evolving needs of clinicians and patients alike. This collaboration has been important in advancing 3D printing and high-volume manufacturing.

Expanding the Range of Possibilities with Keystone Materials

As the partnership has evolved, the range of Keystone materials validated for use with Carbon printers has expanded, offering dental labs a comprehensive suite of solutions to meet various clinical needs:

Keystone's materials, combined with Carbon’s DLS™ technology, help dental labs deliver custom, high-quality parts to clinicians with exacting standards.

The Future of Dental Manufacturing is Here

Carbon's robust technology demonstrates its ability to deliver at scale, with over 1,000,000 dental parts now printed in 314,000 hours using 11,200 liters of Keystone materials. Continuing the Legacy of Innovation

Both Carbon and Keystone remain committed to driving innovation in the oral healthcare space. With a focus on expanding the range of available materials and enhancing the capabilities of Carbon’s DLS™ technology, the future looks bright for digital dentistry. Henry Schein to Serve as Exclusive Distributor of Curodont to Dental Service Organizations

Posted on Tuesday, September 17, 2024

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) announced that it has reached an agreement with the Swiss company vVARDIS to serve as the exclusive distributor of their drill-free Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus product to larger dental service organizations (DSOs) in the U.S.

Developed by vVARDIS, Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus is a proprietary solution that addresses early-stage tooth decay by aiding in the preventive treatment of cavity progression, with an innovative simple, quick, and drill-free application. It is widely recognized that poor oral health can impact overall health, and untreated decay can become life-threatening. Nearly 80% of all patients have signs of early decay and the majority will leave the dental office without treatment, risking more serious disease. Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus will empower dental practices to address this untapped opportunity, expanding patient care with a non-invasive approach.

“We believe that Curodont advances clinical care by treating early decay before it worsens,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, the world’s largest provider of health care solutions to office-based dental and medical practitioners. “With this treatment, the dental team can treat early-stage caries non-invasively and on the same day instead of sending patients home untreated. Henry Schein is pleased to bring products to market that improve clinical outcomes, including Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus, while helping practices operate more efficiently and effectively by advancing oral health and overall health for the ultimate benefit of the patient.”

The partnership between Henry Schein and vVARDIS builds on other innovations that support early treatment of oral disease. In late 2022, Henry Schein One introduced Dentrix® Detect AI, powered and manufactured by VideaHealth. Dentrix® Detect AI is an AI-enabled X-ray analysis tool that provides real-time clinical decision support and can detect incipient carious lesions more accurately than the naked eye, expanding the patient population that could benefit from the use of Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus. Dental professionals who use Dentrix® Detect AI and Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus in concert may help to more effectively treat early carious lesions before greater disease progression occurs.

Henry Schein currently is the market leader in selling Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus, with its novel approach, to general practitioners and DSOs. With this agreement, Henry Schein will have the exclusive rights to distribute Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus to larger DSOs, a market segment driving significant growth. The Company will continue to distribute Curodont products to other segments of the market and in other markets outside of North America, as product registrations are obtained. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are excited to strengthen our partnership with Henry Schein, a recognized leader in driving technological innovation in dentistry,” said Drs. Haley and Goly Abivardi, DMDs, visionary Founders and Co-CEOs of vVARDIS. “Henry Schein’s global reach makes for an ideal partner as we share a common goal: advancing oral health by providing access to innovative, non-invasive solutions. Through this partnership, almost every patient can now benefit from Curodont. As both dentists and entrepreneurs, we are thrilled to finally have and offer a novel approach to treating early decay. Dental professionals have been waiting for decades for a drill-free treatment that addresses the sub-clinical signs of caries immediately, without sending patients home untreated and compromising their overall health. With its seamless integration into existing workflows, we believe that Curodont has the potential to rapidly become the new standard of care for the treatment of early caries, broadening the scope of services offered and empowering dentists and hygienists to lead the way in the management of early caries, ultimately enhancing patient care.”

Penn Dental, PHMC, and Henry Schein Cares Host Community Briefing on Expanding Access to Oral Health Care

Posted on Thursday, September 5, 2024

Penn Dental Medicine and Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), along with Henry Schein Cares, hosted a community briefing September 4 on expanding access to oral health care and improving positive health outcomes through PHMC Dental on Cedar, Penn Dental Medicine’s latest community care site.

Leadership from Penn Dental Medicine, PHMC, and Henry Schein Cares convened local community members and clinical care providers at the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar to highlight the integration and co-location of physical and oral health and the positive impact of this new resource on the community. The program included remarks by Michael K. Pearson, President and Chief Executive Officer of PHMC; Mark S. Wolff, DDS, PhD, Morton Amsterdam Dean of Penn Dental Medicine; and Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc.

“Having a dental care center as part of a facility with other health care services is a model for building community wellness. Individuals can’t have good overall health without good oral health – they are implicitly linked,” said Dean Wolff. “At the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar, patients can easily access both dental and medical care, and clinicians across disciplines are building patient awareness of the oral and systemic health connection.”

PHMC Dental, which opened in January 2024, is part of the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar, an innovative and integrated public health campus serving West and Southwest Philadelphia at 54th Street and Cedar Avenue. The Campus also includes the PHMC Health Center on Cedar, a federally qualified health center (FQHC), and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) Cedar, which provides emergency, inpatient, and behavioral health services. Additionally, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) offers a crisis response center for pediatric mental and behavioral health emergencies, including a stabilization unit and acute inpatient psychiatry services.

The dental care center features 11 state-of-the art dental operatories with care provided by Penn Dental Medicine DMD students as well as faculty and residents from the School’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. Henry Schein Cares, Henry Schein’s global corporate citizenship program, contributed to equipping the space, including a groundbreaking health information system.

“For many decades, Henry Schein has worked to expand equitable access to quality, affordable health care for all, and we are pleased to join Penn Dental Medicine and PHMC to ‘help health happen’ for the local community,” said Mr. Bergman. “Integrated, preventive care, such as regular dental check-ups and cleanings, is essential in achieving optimal oral and overall health. Through PHMC Dental on Cedar, patients will have access to comprehensive care that will in turn help contribute to a healthier quality of life.”

To support the oral/systemic health connections, patients’ dental and health records are being integrated at the PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar with Penn Dental Medicine’s electronic health records, expanding access to care and Penn Dental Medicine’s resources. In addition, video resources have been developed for medical and allied-medical providers that focus on actionable oral health issues throughout the lifespan with the goal of developing interprofessional protocols to enact better oral/systemic management with measured outcomes.

“PHMC Public Health Campus on Cedar was founded on the principles of delivering collaborative, patient-centered care to the local community,” said Michael Pearson, president and CEO, PHMC. “The addition of high-quality dental services expands the Campus’ continuum of care and improves access to comprehensive health care for our neighbors in West and Southwest Philadelphia.”

PHMC Dental on Cedar is one of Penn Dental Medicine’s five community care programs that also include Puentes de Salud (serving the Latinx immigrant population at 1700 South Street), Mercy LIFE (serving seniors in West Philadelphia), PennSmiles mobile vehicle (serving children in schools and camps in West Philadelphia), and Woods Mikey Faulkner Dental Care Center (serving individuals with special health care needs in Langhorne). Last year, Penn Dental Medicine had more than 25,000 patient visits at its community care centers.

Certificate Program for RDHs Earns Prestigious ANSI Accreditation

Posted on Thursday, September 5, 2024

National Network of Healthcare Hygienists (NNHH) is proud to announce that their groundbreaking Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program has been officially accredited by ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), the largest multi-disciplinary accreditation body in the western hemisphere, marking it as the first dental certificate program in the world to receive such recognition. This landmark achievement underscores the program's commitment to excellence and its role in setting a global standard for education in the field of oral health integration.

A Milestone for Oral Systemic Health Education

The accreditation of the Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program is a testament to the rigorous standards, comprehensive curriculum, and innovative teaching methodologies employed by NNHH. Designed to empower registered dental hygienists (RDH) with missing knowledge and practical skills, the program emphasizes the critical role of the RDH as a missing collaborative care team member in healthcare systems.

The First to Follow Both AGD PACE & ANAB Standards

The Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program has now met or exceeded the standards set forth by the Academy of General Dentistry’s Program Approval for Continuing Education (AGD PACE) through a joint providership with UpScale Education, as well as the global standards of ASTM E2659-18 for certificate programs through ANAB. It took two years for ANAB to comb through evidence submitted by NNHH, allowing time for refinement of content that did not meet the standard. With ANSI accreditation, the ethics and sustainability of the organization and its leadership, as well as all major components of the individual program itself, are thoroughly examined; offering a mark of quality and excellence above “approved CE.”

NNHH has raised the bar on continuing education in dental hygiene (and in all of dentistry), as well as created new career pathways for RDHs.

Commitment to Excellence

“The accreditation of our Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program is not just a milestone for us, but a giant leap forward for the entire healthcare industry, addressing a workforce gap," said Jamie Dooley, founder of National Network of Healthcare Hygienists. "This recognition validates our commitment to preparing RDHs to work in integrated settings, and sets a new global standard for specialty certificate programs in dentistry.”

Filling a Crucial Gap in Healthcare Education

With the increasing recognition of the link between oral health and systemic diseases, the need for specialized education in this area has never been more critical. NNHHs accredited program addresses this gap, offering RDHs the opportunity to become certificate holders in oral systemic education, filtering unbiased, unsponsored, research based data and protocols to practicing hygienists, while also becoming key team players in true patient centered care.

“Many people do not know that RDHs are comparable to RNs in education level, continuing education requirements, and licensing. We are educated, passionate healthcare providers, who are experts in assessing oral health, preventing oral-systemic disease, and educating both providers and patients on the latest techniques, products and research,” Dooley stated.

An Example of Excellence

Brianne Carter is an RDH and Certificate Holder of Oral Systemic Education (CH-OSE). While completing her Capstone Project, she developed an integrative pilot program offering oral health education and referrals in her system’s women’s clinic. The results were so successful that she was promoted to dental director and now supervises a team of integrated RDHs working in multiple specialty clinics system-wide. The first thing she does is enroll them in the Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program.

“Ideally, every specialty medical office should have at least one integrated RDH (I-RDH) trained in oral-systemic health and education available to assess, educate, refer to a dental home, and follow up, as well as educate and collaborate with medical teams for true health equity that finally includes oral health…we are proud to be on the leading edge of this model in action,” Carter said.
