AADSM Ensures Quality Patient Care Through New Educational Standards

Posted on Friday, March 29, 2019

Lisle, Ill. (February 2019) – As more patients turn to their dentists for help with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) is establishing rigorous educational standards for the dentists who practice dental sleep medicine.

“It is about ensuring those dentists who desire to treat patients with OSA or snoring are properly trained, so their patients are safely and effectively treated”, said David Schwartz, DDS, D.ABDSM, and President-Elect of the AADSM. His editorial explaining the organization’s position appears in the most recent issue of the Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine.

The AADSM recently launched the AADSM Mastery Program to provide standardized education to dentists who want to provide oral appliance therapy for OSA and snoring. The program consists of three levels of training comprising 65 hours of continuing education. To ensure that more dentists have access to this training, the AADSM has reached out to all U.S. dental schools, inviting them to offer an accredited AADSM Mastery Program. The AADSM recently approved the first dental school to receive this designation.

Establishing minimum standards for training protects patients and dentists as well. “The inherent risk to the patient coupled with the professional liability risk the dentist is assuming is far too great to be fooled into thinking that no additional training is needed,” said Schwartz. “High-quality care is an absolute must, and proper education and training are the only pathways to ensure quality care.”

In addition to protecting patients and dentists, the AADSM believes that standardized education based on a core curriculum is essential for the growth of the field.  “I firmly believe that dentists will play an increasingly larger role in preventing medical diseases and treating illnesses such as OSA, snoring, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. There simply are not enough physicians, but to do so, we need to demonstrate that we are competent to provide optimal care,” said Schwartz.

Establishing educational standards addresses a topic that was not covered in the recent American Dental Association (ADA) Proposed Policy on the Role of Dentistry in the Treatment of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders. That policy does not specify educational requirements for dentists to provide oral appliance therapy. It is in this context that the AADSM has taken on the responsibility of defining and providing the education necessary for dentists who want to practice dental sleep medicine at the highest level.

Worldwide Aid for Children with a Cleft Lip and Palate

Posted on Wednesday, March 27, 2019

Amann Girrbach has started a commitment to the Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe (German Aid for Children with a Cleft Lip and Palate).

The Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e.V. is committed worldwide to the treatment of children with cleft lips, jaws, and palates. The children come from the poorest backgrounds and are often socially isolated because of their disfigurement. Surgery to give the affected children the opportunity of leading a "normal" life costs the equivalent of EUR 250. In addition to the obvious disfigurement, children with a cleft in most cases suffer from serious health impairments: they cannot eat and drink properly, they have hearing deficiencies, and their language development is impaired. With the aim of providing comprehensive cleft therapy and in addition to financing the operations, the organization promotes the establishment of interdisciplinary teams of physicians and therapists consisting of surgeons, pediatricians, dentists, orthodontists, speech therapists, psychologists, and social workers.

Amann Girrbach has affirmed its belief in the vital importance of corporate social and economic responsibility and is particularly pleased about the great success of the first fundraising campaign, which was organized for the benefit of the Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe at the international AG dealer meeting at the end of October. For this purpose, the AG CHARITY GAMES were organized: points could be accumulated during various skill exercises, and these were then converted into euros by Amann Girrbach. Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of all dealer representatives present as well as the AG employees from almost 60 countries, a total of €11,224.50 was donated.

New Pacific Dental Services® Foundation Dentists for Special Needs Clinic Opens for Patients

Posted on Tuesday, March 26, 2019

Today the Pacific Dental Services (PDS®) Foundation Dentists for Special Needs clinic opens its doors to provide high-quality oral health care for children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. The new clinic offers patients with special needs sensory-integrated operatories and state-of-the-art technology, as well as specially-trained dentists equipped with behavioral and environmental techniques to ensure successful patient visits. To schedule an appointment with the PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs clinic, click HERE.

Among the clinic’s leadership is Jack Dillenberg, DDS, who will serve as the Clinical Director; and Jacob Dent, DDS, a renowned dentist who has been practicing dentistry for more than 15 years. “As a parent of a child with special needs, I understand the stress and anxiety that comes with going to doctors’ visits,” said Dr. Dent, who serves as the clinic’s practicing dentist. “It’s critical to establish trust between the dental team and the patients. This can only be accomplished with patience and understanding.”

4.8% of Arizonans have cognitive disabilities. Nationwide, more than 52 million people in the U.S. have special needs. Unfortunately, less than 10% of dentists treat patients with disabilities because of their lack of training and the patients’ negative reactions to common dental procedures. For this reason, access to specialized care such as dentistry is among the main healthcare concerns for people with special needs.

The PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs clinic offers patients comprehensive oral health care including crowns, fillings, hygiene, implants, root canals, and oral surgery, and will also provide emergency care when needed. In addition, the not-for-profit clinic, which was founded by the PDS Foundation, will provide patients and their caregivers with education to help them with their oral health in between visits. The PDS Foundation has been leading the charge to make dentistry more accessible to people with special needs through training and advocacy. The Foundation’s leadership understands that caring for patients with special needs takes not only special training, but also compassion.

Continues Dr. Dent, who also serves as the clinical director of Special Olympics Texas and Special Olympics Louisiana, “We develop individual treatment plans tailored for each person. I treat all of my patients and their caregivers with the same compassion and understanding as I do with my own family.”

The PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs clinic is part of the PDS Foundation’s mission to improve oral healthcare for all patients, one person at a time.

About Pacific Dental Services® Foundation

The Pacific Dental Services Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization whose mission is to create opportunities to serve through improving oral healthcare locally, nationally and internationally. By creating opportunities to serve, the PDS Foundation positively enhances the lives of those in need, and in turn, those who serve. The Foundation provides access and advocacy to disadvantaged and underserved communities in four key areas: PDS Foundation Mobile Dental Clinic, Special Needs Advocacy and Training, Oral Health Scholarships, and International Trips. PDT Releases The Pineyro Arch™ Kit

Posted on Tuesday, March 26, 2019

Paradise Dental Technologies (PDT Inc.) has released the latest innovation in implant hygiene and maintenance for full fixed implant restorations, The Pineyro Arch Kit. Designed with Dr. Alfonso Piñeyro, DDS, it is the first instrument set of its kind specifically designed for the implant debridement of full fixed implant restorations. The Pineyro Arch Kit allows all hygienists to treat full fixed hybrid patients without removal of prosthesis.

Pineyro Arch Instruments numbers 1-3 have a unique crescent shape and are anatomically designed to fit around locator abutments for removable prosthetic hygiene applications. The Pineyro crescent shape also anatomically fits around standard single-unit implant abutments, and other cylindrical prosthetic designs.

Utilizing the designs of The Pineyro Arch Kit eliminates the tedious and cumbersome nature around removing the fixed prosthesis, as well as potential issues with the loss or breakage of micro-mini screws during the hygiene process.

This kit contains 4 instruments to properly address all the difficulties in access for hygiene for full fixed implant restorations.

The Pineyro Arch™ Ti 1: Anterior Arch used to debride the anterior placed implants for a Full Fixed Hybrid, especially the lingual area of lower anterior teeth where calculus builds up frequently.

The Pineyro Arch™ Ti 2: Posterior Arch used to debride the posterior placed implants for a Full Fixed Hybrid. The special shape of the shank allows for proper access.

The Pineyro Arch™ Ti 3: Mesial/distal arch used to debride the posterior, hard to reach mesial/distal areas on the implants for Full Fixed Hybrids.

The Pineyro Arch™ Ti 4: Specialty arch used for all implants prior to taking impressions. It is also used to clean off abutments for single to hybrid cases prior to cementation.

Dr. Piñeyro received his dental degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara. He then completed a two-year advanced education in general dentistry before completing his specialist training in prosthodontics at the University of Rochester Eastman Dental Center. Dr. Piñeyro is currently an affiliate instructor at the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington. He is the past president of the esteemed Washington State Society of Prosthodontists and is also a member of the American College of Prosthodontists and the American Prosthodontics Society.

Dr. Piñeyro has authored several publications in peer-reviewed dental journals, chapters in textbooks and is currently involved in research focusing on dental implants. Dr. Piñeyro practices full time in a practice limited to fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics.
