DentalHQ Receives Endorsement of the ADSO to Deliver Dental Membership Plans to Group Dental Practices

Posted on Friday, June 30, 2023

The Association of Dental Support Organizations has endorsed DentalHQ as an Affinity Partner to bring successful dental membership plans to its member dentists.

DentalHQ, the leading software platform for successful dental membership plans, has announced it has received an Affinity Partner endorsement of the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO). DentalHQ will partner with the ADSO as an endorsed membership plan platform for the organization’s 11,000+ member dentists.

As dental insurance continues to lower reimbursement rates, and with more and more Americans losing or not renewing their insurance, membership plans are emerging as necessary solutions for dental practices to offer. Managing those plans, however, can prove to be a challenge, which is why DentalHQ was born. Especially at the group practice and DSO level, having automated membership management software focused on efficiency and simplicity is the key to a successful membership program.

“ADSO is pleased to welcome DentalHQ as an Affinity Partner offering our members in-house dental membership plans,” said Andrew Smith, ADSO’s Executive Director. “ADSO went through a robust vetting process and selected a partner that offers attractive benefits to patients with system flexibility for our members. We look forward to our partnership.”

The Affinity Partnership will bring exclusive benefits to the ADSO’s 6000 member practices, making DentalHQ’s powerful automated membership plan platform more accessible to more dental patients nationwide.

“I launched DentalHQ over 5 years ago because I saw the tremendous impact and power a membership plan had in building my practice. For DentalHQ to be named an endorsed membership plan provider of the ADSO is such exciting news for us,” said Dr. Brett Wells, founder of DentalHQ. He added, “because of our unique perspective on what dentists and DSO founders are facing at the practice level, I believe this partnership will build stronger dental practices for all ADSO members.”

ADSO members who wish to learn more about this endorsed opportunity can visit https://www.dentalhq.com/adso.

Dentsply Sirona Leadership Team Joins Hands to Create Healthy Smiles

Posted on Friday, June 30, 2023

The powerful partnership between Dentsply Sirona and Smile Train has already helped over 1,000 children to gain access to high quality, comprehensive cleft treatment. Building on this, and in anticipation of the Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month celebrated in July, Dentsply Sirona’s Leadership Team recently took action together to create healthy smiles and increase access to dental education by preparing 300 dental kits to deliver to patients and their families at Smile Train facilities in Colombia and Brazil.

In April, Dentsply Sirona’s leadership team took time to pack 300 oral health kits consisting of a sustainable toothbrush, toothpaste, timers, and floss. The kits also contained a flyer that educates cleft patients and their families on oral care best practices. Leaders also wrote “Get well” cards to patients undergoing cleft treatment at Smile Train partner treatment centers in Colombia and Brazil. During a recent trip to Colombia, Erania Brackett, Senior Vice President Orthodontic Aligner Solutions & Customer Experience and Head of Sustainability at Dentsply Sirona, had the chance to hand deliver some of the kits to children undergoing treatment there.

“It was a privilege to meet some of the doctors working with Smile Train and to see firsthand what a difference their work is making in the lives of patients and their families,” said Erania Brackett. “It was also wonderful to interact with and be able to put a face to some of the patients there. I was so glad to have the opportunity to give them the oral health kits we had prepared.”

As part of Dentsply Sirona’s sustainability strategy “BEYOND: Taking action for a brighter world,” partnerships with organizations like Smile Train are critical to helping improve the quality of and access to oral health around the globe.

In July, during the Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month, the company encourages everyone to join hands and take action to support children with clefts and increase their access to care. For more information and to contact Dentsply Sirona, visit the company's website.

Dentsply Sirona is proud to be recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s 500 Most Responsible Companies in 2023 and continues to seek out new ways to integrate sustainability into every aspect of the business.

The Future of Oral Healthcare Pavilion to feature hands-on demonstrations and live presentations

Pacific Dental Services® (PDS), a leading national dental support organization, is partnering with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA®) to showcase cutting-edge, preventive care dental technology in a dedicated pavilion at the ADHA23 annual conference July 7-9, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Future of Oral Healthcare Pavilion will feature hands-on demonstrations and interactive presentations focusing on predictive and preventive technologies, enabling earlier intervention of oral-systemic disease. Dental hygienists, who play a vital role in ensuring positive patient outcomes, will have an opportunity to learn and experience latest tools and developments to stay ahead of the curve in their dynamic field.

“We are proud to partner with the American Dental Hygienists' Association for ADHA23 and sponsor the ‘Future of Oral Healthcare Pavilion,’” says Stephen E. Thorne IV, Founder and CEO of Pacific Dental Services. “This collaboration underscores our commitment to driving positive change in oral healthcare. Through this sponsorship, we aim to empower dental hygienists with the latest tools and advancements, fostering a dynamic field focused on proactive care and ensuring optimal patient outcomes.”

The proactive and future focus of the exhibit aligns with the ADHA’s mission for improving oral healthcare and advancing the dental hygiene profession.

“While we celebrate ADHA’s 100th Anniversary with a lookback this year, we’re focused on the next century and the future of dental hygiene,” explains ADHA President Dawn Ann Dean, RDH, MSDH, CTTS, FADHA. “Through ADHA’s partnership with Pacific Dental Services, our members and ADHA23 conference attendees can visit the pavilion and participating companies to learn more about forward-looking, cutting-edge oral healthcare tools and technologies that enhance the preventative focus dental hygienists embrace.”

The companies and organizations participating in the Future of Oral Healthcare Pavilion include:

● OralDNA Labs: OralDNA® Labs provides advanced salivary diagnostic tests that identify oral pathogens and genetic precursors related to periodontal disease and associated systemic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and more. Results empower healthcare providers and their patients with quantitative monitoring, enabling targeted treatment plans for improved oral and overall health.

● Siemens: The Siemens DCA Vantage® Analyzer HbA1c Reagent Kit enables in-office, point-of-care (POC) access to lab-accurate glycemic screenings. Through these screenings, providers can target potential glycemic conditions adversely affecting the co-management of periodontal and gingival disease, and potentially improve the bi-directional relationship of periodontal disease and diabetes.

● Ultradent: The Gemini™ Laser is a dual-wavelength soft tissue diode laser that uses thermal-light energy to mitigate the adverse effects of disease-causing bacteria and promotes earlier wound healing. Thermal energy is absorbed into the tissue wall and targets pathogenic bacteria, lowering the risk of complications and infection.

● Dentognostics: The ORALyzer chairside aMMP-8 biomarker screening provides early detection of periodontal tissue breakdown, often before signs of inflammation or attachment loss are clinically visible. In-office quantitative results are available in minutes, enabling healthcare providers to empower their patients with an actionable “oral fitness” score, improving proactive and preventive care measures.

● OraPharma: ARESTIN® is a locally administered antibiotic by OraPharma designed to target specific periodontal bacteria by interrupting pathogenesis and reducing periodontal pockets. When used in conjunction with scaling and root planing, ARESTIN has been proven to significantly enhance oral health and reduce the systemic impact of periodontal disease.

● Epic: Implemented by many hospitals and health systems, including PDS-supported dental and primary healthcare practices, the Epic® health record system enables dental and medical providers to view a patient’s acute health, primary health, and dental health history all in one place. Using a longitudinal patient record helps close care gaps, increases the chance of identifying diseases early based on changes in gum and oral health, and promotes optimal healthcare outcomes.

● American Academy of Periodontology (AAP): The AAP, the leading professional organization for periodontists in the U.S., will present “Better Together: The Evolving Role of the Dental Hygienist in Periodontal Care.” The academy’s purpose is to advance the periodontal and general health of the public and promote excellence in the practice of periodontics.

DentaQuest Embarks on Digital Evolution To Improve Patient Outcomes and Access To Care

Posted on Friday, June 30, 2023

“Dental Done Better” approach aims to improve efficiency, care equity and member experience with a focus on digital engagement

DentaQuest, part of Sun Life U.S., is creating better experiences and outcomes for its members by identifying opportunities to streamline interactions for members and dental providers with digital improvements and communications. Data indicates that members expect more from their insurer, and DentaQuest is committed to meeting those expectations through its “Dental Done Better” initiative.

DentaQuest’s “Dental Done Better” approach to digital evolution is rooted in the acknowledgement that member expectations have shifted in the demand for seamless, multichannel digital communications and tools. According to Gartner research, the number of consumers using people-only channels dropped to 27% since the pandemic, indicating a growing use of digital channels. In addition, Broadridge data shows 87% of consumers believe it’s important to have a simple way to interact with companies across all channels.

Acting on the results of this research, DentaQuest is increasing investment in and focus on the customer experience with a number of digital evolutions already in place, including:

● a modernized website that geolocates members and providers so they can find a dentist and view important plan information and documents easily;

● enhancements to the interactive voice response system (IVR) enabling self-service options for both providers and members;

● digital member handbooks and insurance cards available for self-service download;

● SMS texting of important benefits information, reminders and other member communications to increase utilization and engagement;

● improved provider portal functionality so providers can focus on treating members rather than administrative processes; and

● online Provider Performance Reports for fast, easy access to critical, actionable data.

“We know consumers are increasingly adopting technology and digital tools for their health care experiences,” said Kamila Chytil, chief operating officer of DentaQuest. “It's imperative that we innovate our digital offerings to meet the needs of our members and improve health outcomes. Our goal is to create a positive, seamless experience for members when accessing their dental benefits information and ultimately minimize any friction involved with accessing oral health care.”

DentaQuest’s efforts to improve efficiency, care equity and member experience are underway, with additional tools and enhancement to come later this year.

Laboratory Design Service and Material Extension: Efficient cooperation between the laboratory and the dental practice

Posted on Friday, June 30, 2023

Amann Girrbach expands the opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation

In combination with the cloud platform AG.Live, the modular Ceramill DRS (Direct Restoration Solution) System from Amann Girrbach ensures efficient workflows for simple and secure interdisciplinary collaboration between the laboratory and dental practice. A new feature will soon be added to this network: laboratories will be able to act as design centers for dentists. Networking of the AG.Live cloud platform with the Ceramill software products in the dental practice and laboratory enables this interdisciplinary workflow to come true. As of immediate effect, additional materials are also available for the fabrication of dental restorations: All composite and hybrid materials with universal mandrels can now be processed.

With the new "Laboratory Design Service" feature of the AG.Live cloud platform, the laboratory can offer dental practices an extended range of services and take over the design of restorations. The practice provides the laboratory with the case data together with the required intraoral scans via the AG.Live platform. The laboratory imports all the data, including the case files, into the Ceramill Mind CAD software and creates the design. Then, the file is transferred back to the practice. There, nesting and the subsequent milling process can be started directly. This feature will be released shortly with the Ceramill Update 4.4.

Options for Same-Day and Single-Visit-Dentistry

"With good timing, this creates perfect opportunities for high-quality same-day or even single-visit-dentistry with lab-based design," emphasizes Elena Bleil, Product Manager at Amann Girrbach, and adds, "This has benefits for both parties. The practice can draw on the expertise of the laboratory and focus entirely on treating the patients. This also allows capacity bottlenecks to be avoided. Laboratories can, in turn, add an innovative capability to their service portfolio while, at the same time, being a part of the practices' in-house process—something that, in the past, was restricted only to the large design service companies."

3rd Party IOS-compatible

The requirements for the Laboratory Design Service are quite simple. To use this feature, all that is required on the part of the laboratory is a Ceramill Update to Version 4.4. For intraoral scans, it is pos-sible to use scans performed with the Ceramill Map DRS as well as those created with intraoral scan-ners from other manufacturers. "Embarking on this new collaboration opportunity is therefore extremely uncomplicated—collaboration between users has never been so easy and at the same time so efficient," concludes Elena Bleil.

Material extension – all composite/hybrid materials with universal mandrels can now be processed

With the recently implemented Ceramill DRS Software Update 1.4, users can now process all composite or hybrid blocks in the Ceramill DRS system. The newly developed "Diamond Finish" milling strategy—a combination of milling and grinding—makes it possible to process composite or hybrid blocks (mixed plastic-ceramic material) in sizes I12, C14 and C14L at maximum precision and surface quality in all degrees of hardness. Depending on their size, molar crowns can be processed in approximately 30 minutes in Fast Mode and in approximately 35 minutes in HD Mode (see illustration).

Further information on all matters concerning the Ceramill DRS can be found at www.ceramill-drs.com and www.amanngirrbach.com/en-us/ceramill-drs. You can find free webinars about Ceramill DRS at https://academy.amanngirrbach.com.

Kansas City University Opens College of Dental Medicine to Address Oral Health Crisis

Posted on Thursday, June 29, 2023

Kansas City University (KCU) unveiled the nation's newest and most innovative College of Dental Medicine (CDM) in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Harry M. Cornell Center for Dental Education on its McIntire-Farber Campus in Joplin, Missouri on Monday, June 26, 2023.

The Harry M. Cornell Dental Education Center is a $65 million state-of-the-art facility designed to address the growing shortage of dentists, especially in the four-state region that includes southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas, northwest Arkansas and northeast Oklahoma.

"We know poor oral health leads to poor overall health," said Marc B. Hahn, DO, president and CEO of KCU. "In fact, poor oral health has been found to promote a host of other illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer's. KCU is proud to lead an effort to erase disparities in oral health care and improve health outcomes for people in rural areas."

The inaugural class of 80 students will be seated on July 31, 2023. Students will learn the science of dental medicine using the latest technology with simulated patients, virtual reality, 3-D printing, intra- oral camera and digital scanning of teeth.

The novel curriculum will place special emphasis on integrating basic sciences with clinical knowledge so dental students are prepared sooner to provide dental care to patients. Integrating dental medicine coursework with KCU's College of Osteopathic Medicine will lead future dentists to recognize how oral health problems can impact a patient's overall health, as well as promote interprofessional education in both colleges.

"The KCU College of Dental Medicine will integrate dental and medical education so that our students will be treating the whole patient," Linda Niessen, DMD, MPH, MPP founding dean of the College of Dental Medicine. "We envision that the KCU College of Dental Medicine will become a center of excellence in the region improving oral health and increasing access to needed oral health care."

In addition to state-of-the-art educational labs, the CDM will house an Oral Health Center where students will experience hands-on learning by providing dental services to patients under the supervision of dental faculty. CDM faculty will soon begin offering care to patients who lack access to oral health care. "Students will be treating patients in their second year of study," said Niessen. "Faculty members share a strong desire to serve our community right away and will soon see individuals who have had difficulty obtaining needed dental care through referrals with local nonprofit agencies."

Diverse Student Body

KCU's inaugural cohort of dental students, the Class of 2027, represents a diverse population with a wide range in age, background and ethnicity. Nearly 50 percent of the students come from Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Others from rural Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Native American tribes. Some followed a traditional path to dental school and will begin their studies directly after earning an undergraduate degree. Others bring workforce experience as dental hygienists and other areas of health science; still others are answering the call to health care after working in other fields.

Planning for the CDM began before and continued through the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on key take-aways from the pandemic, KCU redesigned the original architectural plans in order to improve airflow, modify the dental operatories, and mitigate the spread of viruses and bacteria throughout the building. Additionally, the Harry M. Cornell Dental Education Center and Center for Oral Health were built with sustainability in mind using local products, contractors and native landscaping.

Meeting the Need

As the country grapples with the need to correct health inequities that were made worse by the pandemic, the reality of the nation's oral health crisis is becoming clear. The U.S. requires 7,000 new dentists to fill shortages nationwide. Many practicing dentists are nearing retirement or left the field. Estimates are that it will take another 8,600 new dentists each year to maintain a national supply.

The Joplin region, like many rural areas in the United States, suffers from a shortage of dentists. Nearly all counties within a 10-100-mile radius of Joplin qualify as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (DHPSAs) by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). It is estimated that Missouri alone has a shortage of more than 700 dentists, Oklahoma requires 166 more dentists, and both Arkansas and Kansas need more than 100 to address these shortages.

Kansas City University is committed to meeting the health care needs of the region. This new dental school will support the university's mission of improving the well-being of the communities we serve. The project represents an investment of more than $100 million, with capital expenditures in excess of $65 million. Philanthropy has played a major role in this project with nearly $45 million raised from individual donors and foundations.

KCU will continue to secure funding for ongoing scholarships to offset the high cost of dental education and ensure the education of much-needed dentists to meet local and national oral health-care needs.

About Kansas City University

Kansas City University, founded in 1916, is a fully accredited, private not-for-profit health sciences university with Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Biosciences and the College of Dental Medicine. The University offers multiple graduate degrees: a doctor of osteopathic medicine; a doctorate in clinical psychology; a master of arts in bioethics; a master of science in biomedical sciences; a master of business administration in partnership with Rockhurst University; a master of public health in partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center; and the new doctor of dental medicine. The medical school is the sixth largest, the ninth most impactful in primary care and the tenth most affordable of private medical colleges in the nation. It is also the leading producer of physicians for the state of Missouri.

KCU has two campuses in Kansas City and Joplin, Missouri, to address the growing population health needs of both urban and rural communities in the region.

Overjet Expands Dental AI Detection Capabilities With 4th FDA Clearance

Posted on Thursday, June 29, 2023

In an FDA study, dentists missed 43% fewer teeth with caries when analyzing X-rays with Overjet.

Overjet, the dental industry leader in artificial intelligence, announced today its fourth FDA clearance, expanding the use of its AI technology for predicting tooth decay in younger patients.

The Food and Drug Administration analyzed and approved Overjet's AI models for detecting and outlining caries (cavities) on periapical radiographs and bitewing radiographs for patients age 12 and older who have permanent teeth.

The FDA study found dentists were able to detect more carious lesions when using Overjet. Specifically, dentists missed 43% fewer teeth with caries on bitewing images and 45.8% fewer teeth with caries on periapical images.

This helps dentists with their diagnosis, treatment planning, and discussions with patients. Overjet is the only dental AI technology that outlines the decay, which helps both providers and patients visualize the extent more clearly.

"Untreated cavities can lead to problems with eating, speaking, self-esteem, and quality of life," said Wardah Inam, the CEO and co-founder of Overjet. "Our goal is to improve oral health care for all, and expanding Overjet's AI detection capabilities gives dentists another advantage to help provide the best care possible."

Overjet's prior FDA clearance for Caries Assist was recognized by Fast Company as a world-changing idea for 2023. Overjet is also FDA-cleared to detect calculus and to quantify bone level measurements. It adds metrics that help providers determine the level of periodontal (gum) disease, and help patients visualize how the infection is deteriorating the bone supporting their teeth.

Overjet continues to raise the bar for optimal patient health. One of the benefits of artificial intelligence is that it can process large amounts of data quickly. Overjet's AI integrates with the digital imaging and practice management systems to analyze patient records from previous appointments and provide additional insights to assist in patient care.

Dr. Jen Revolutionizes Oral Health With Scientifically-Advanced Range of Fluoride-Free Products

Posted on Thursday, June 29, 2023

Available for purchase today, the innovative adult and children’s toothpastes -along with a broad range of dental products - are a breakthrough for patients seeking more naturally-effective remineralizing oral care products.

Dr. Jen Eisenhuth DDS, MS – founder of Dr Jen Natural - announces the launch of her leading-edge range of oral care products, including the world’s first remineralizing toothpaste that contains the most effective levels of fluoride-free ingredients for children and adults. Dr. Jen is an award-winning and highly reputable Dentist with over 25 years’ providing and advancing top-tier dentistry care - and is a leader in the advancement of cleaner, more effective and clinically-proven ingredients for oral care products.

Dr. Jen’s products stand at the forefront of next-generation oral care science, and contain the most optimal levels of a breakthrough, clinically-proven ingredient Nano-Hydroxyapatite (nHAp) – proven to strengthen and protect teeth without fluoride. Nano-Hydroxyapatite was first developed by NASA scientists seeking a cure for astronauts experiencing bone and tooth enamel loss in zero gravity environments. This ingredient, when used at the correct concentration, is a safe and effective way to help restore and remineralize tooth enamel for everyday use in children and adults.

As a true pioneer, always seeking to improve the industry she loves, Dr. Jen discovered nHAp during a comprehensive quest to find a remineralizing toothpaste that actually works. Bringing in her prior experience as an engineer and working alongside leading chemists, after over 50 iterations spanning two years she created the ultimate remineralizing toothpaste using a 10% concentration of Nano-Hydroxyapatite - the most effective amount required to support desired results - which no other toothpaste on the market provides.

“My mission is to provide the most ethical, safe oral care products – not just for my patients, but for my family and loved ones. As a parent, I know how important it is to provide safe, remineralizing, and healthy products for the entire families' long term health and development.” says Dr. Jen. “What I saw was a large gap in the market- with no adequate remineralizing or healthy toothpaste available.”

In addition to her range of fluoride-free and more natural oral care products, which includes children’s and adult’s toothpaste, plastic-free dental floss and prebiotic mount rinse, Dr. Jen also developed Super Paste- a toothpaste intended for patients suffering from xerostomia, weak enamel and hypersensitivity. While there are many people who can benefit from this fluoride-option, one of the most critical groups are those undergoing chemotherapy, who suffer xerostomia as a result of their treatments and health medications.

"This product has been very helpful for my patients with xerostomia.” states Dr. Jen. “Super Paste is a revolutionary remineralizing toothpaste combining 10% nHAp with fluoride. When combined with fluoride, nHAp is clinically proven to outperform toothpaste with fluoride alone.* This makes our Super Paste an excellent alternative for patients using high-prescription toothpaste.”

Dr. Jen’s Remineralizing Toothpaste for children and adults launched in 2022 to dental practices and is now available for purchase directly from DrJenNatural.com and on Amazon.
