CareQuest Institute Funds 100 Million Mouths Campaign to Integrate Oral Health into Primary Care

Posted on Wednesday, November 30, 2022

Initiative, Part of CareQuest Institute’s Grantmaking Efforts, Aims to Establish an Oral Health Champion in Each State

CareQuest Institute for Oral Health®, a leading national nonprofit focused on creating a more accessible, equitable, and integrated oral health system, is partnering with the Center for Integration of Primary Care and Oral Health (CIPCOH) on a campaign to designate 50 Oral Health Champions (one in each state) during the next decade to work with health profession schools and programs to integrate oral health into their primary care curricula and bridge gaps in oral health access.

The initiative, the 100 Million Mouths: Creating Primary Care Champions for Equitable Oral Health Campaign, was originally funded by Health Resources and Service Administration and is now part of CareQuest Institute’s grantmaking efforts. It aligns closely with the Institute’s efforts to create an oral health system that is more accessible, equitable, and integrated.

“As an organization focused on centering health equity and the voices of marginalized communities, we aim to continue to explore ways to meet communities where they are, develop intentional tools and opportunities to support their health, and integrate a community-driven perspective as we explore ways to improve care delivery and coordination,” said Trenae Simpson, Director of Grants and Programs at CareQuest Institute. “We made this investment to grow a new health care workforce that is directly contributing to meeting the oral health needs of everyone and helping educational institutions rethink how they approach oral health as a part of overall health.”

Many Americans visit their primary care provider more regularly than they do a dentist. Additionally, disparities in access to oral health exist across income, race, geography, and immigrant status. In fact, more than 56 million Americans live in areas with a shortage of dental professionals. Through this initiative, CareQuest Institute hopes to help give more primary care providers the tools and training to advise patients about their oral health, fill a critical gap, and advance oral health equity.

Shenam Ticku, BDS, MPH, instructor in Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, professor in the department of family medicine and community health at UMass Chan Medical School, co-lead the 100 Million Mouths campaign.

“This project started from a bold idea that we could reach millions of Americans who may not have access to a dentist by enlisting the greater health care workforce as partners in oral health,” said Ticku. “Our Champions can train their peers and create more advocates for oral health.”

“The project is to create 50 state champions who will work to implement some oral health curricula in every health school in the country,” said Silk. “We named it 100 Million Mouths because 100-plus million people do not visit a dentist in any given year but are likely to visit their primary care provider. So, if we could have oral health promotion and disease prevention addressed by primary care graduates in their practices, we could improve the health of that many people.”

The initiative launched in 2021 with Oral Health Champions from six different states across the US: Alabama, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Missouri, and Tennessee. Now in its second year, Champions have joined from eight additional states: Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Ohio. The program is in the process of recruiting Champions from Mississippi, West Virginia, Louisiana, Idaho, Alaska, Vermont, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

Champions represent a range of personal demographics and professional backgrounds, including physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, family medicine doctors, med-peds physicians, dental hygienists, and pediatric dentists. The goal, within a decade, is to have at least one Champion in each state.

Once Oral Health Champions are accepted in the program, they receive training that gives them a toolkit to engage with health profession schools and programs in their home states to improve oral health education.

CIPCOH is joint effort between the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and UMass Chan Medical School's Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

Cloud-Computing Dental Platform tab32 Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

Posted on Wednesday, November 30, 2022

The Inc. 5000 company is the leading innovator of dental practice management technology and is the first to standardize EHR dental data.

tab32, the #1 all-in-one cloud technology dental platform, is celebrating 10 years of innovation. Founded in 2012, the company has seen ten years of industry highs and has been a key part of the evolution of dental practice management technology, working with some of the largest DSOs in the industry. tab32 has continuously led the way in innovation as the first to market with the Open Data Warehouse and 2-way text within PMS, the first to standardize EHR data in dentistry, and the first platform to build from the ground up to include patient communication, radiology, and claims.

"The democratization of data in dentistry is something that has, unfortunately, been on the back burner for the industry for decades, until now," said Dr. Roshan Parikh, Senior Strategic Advisor for tab32. "With hundreds of private-equity backed DSOs and many more consolidated platforms, it's no longer acceptable to wait on data. DSOs need it to make real-time decisions related to patient care and to drive their businesses forward. tab32 is the first dental platform that offers this, and I'm proud to join them in, not only, democratizing data, but also modernizing the backbone of the dental office: the practice management software."

tab32 was recently included in Inc. 5000's list of fastest-growing companies for 2022. Since its founding, tab32 has opened offices in Rocklin, CA, Miami, FL, and Mumbai and Vadodara, India. It now employs close to 200 of the best and brightest in their fields, including a leadership team made up of former researchers, data scientists, and engineers coming out of the University of California system. Recently, CEO Kiltesh Patel was appointed to the Forbes Tech Council as a thought leader, driving a stronger understanding of the dental tech industry to a vast audience of business, finance, and tech leaders. Additionally, Chief Strategy Officer, Melissa LuVisi joined the Newsweek Expert Forum and took home the 2022 Sacramento Business Journal's Women Who Mean Business Award.

Previous awards that tab32 has been honored with include the 2015 Dental Excellence Readers Award by Dr. Bicuspid, Best Dental Software of 2021 by Digital.com, and they were Sacramento Business Journal's runner-up in the 2021 MedTech Innovation Awards. In 2019, tab32 was voted as the #1 user-rated platform leading in all three core practice areas - Practice Management, Patient Communication, and Dental Imaging from Capterra, Get App, and Software Advice.

Through the years, tab32 has continuously sought visionaries and heavyweights to join their advisory board, ensuring they have top minds directly impacting their work. Their current Board of Advisors includes Emmet Scott, President of the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO), Dr. Roshan Parikh, former Head of Dentistry at Walmart U.S., Dr. Ellen Polsky, co-founder and partner at Visio, Dr. Anna Cowdin, owner of Cowdin Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Janice Keally, periodontist and owner of Progressive Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, Dr. Bill Sorvino, dentist and owner of Smileologie, and Lee Harris, dentist and educator. Previous members include Dr. Aman Kaur, founder and president of Women in DSO, CEO of AiM Dental Alliance, and Ryan Morrison, dentist and owner of Millard Family Dentistry.

tab32 was born from the mind of Kiltesh Patel, who has spent the last 20 years in enterprise technologies and medical informatics. Having dedicated his career to positively impacting patient care, focusing on connecting oral health to the overall wellness of the human body to his expertise in Health Information Technology (HIT) strategies, Patel noticed an ever-widening gap in how oral healthcare was falling behind in mainstream health conversations and care. Understanding the importance of oral health to overall health outcomes, Patel implemented his vision to improve care models through technology while keeping the patient experience at the center of the care continuum by founding tab32.

"I am extremely proud of the work that tab32 has done in the past decade," said Kiltesh Patel, CEO and co-founder. "Not only have we seen 100% year-over-year growth, 120% year-over-year client growth, and 200% growth in active patients, our technology has repeatedly led the way in the evolution of the dental industry, which has been found wanting compared to other healthcare verticals. It's time that dental gets the label of importance it deserves, directly driving healthcare outcomes, and tab32 is excited to help pave that road."

U.S. Dental Professionals Provide Free Dental Care and Education to Over 1,140 Patients in Akumal, Mexico

Posted on Tuesday, November 29, 2022

Fifteen independent Aspen Dental practitioners ran a free dental clinic over a week in November, aimed at breaking down barriers to care worldwide

In partnership with Global Dental Relief, a team of 15 independent Aspen Dental practitioners traveled to Akumal, Mexico to provide free dental care to more than 1,140 patients in the area over the course of a week. The company’s Overseas Outreach Program brings in a team of dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and lab technicians to countries in need of free dental care. The program has been active for more than five years and has served communities in Guatemala, Argentina and Mexico, among others.

While in Akumal, the team provided 501 cleanings, 521 fluoride treatments and 63 extractions, all free of charge. Children made up roughly 40% of the patients served during the trip. In addition to treating patients’ immediate needs, doctors and dental staff also provided oral hygiene lessons to almost 600 children to educate them on dental hygiene with the goal of improving the community’s oral health for years to come.

“These kids are so joyful and have so much fun and there’s so much love in the community here. The issue is they truly don’t have the same access to care here that we do in the U.S., so being able to be a part of this and to teach them and to treat their cavities and their disease is really special,” said Lauren McDonough, DMD, vice president, practice owner development, Aspen Dental, who plays a large role in planning these outreach trips. “We really brought together a great group of doctors, hygienists, office managers, dental assistants and more. This group was so cohesive — not caring what their position was, just there for the mission and to bring better care to the kids in Akumal.”

“My whole family is from Mexico, so I think it’s just super important to give back to everybody, but especially where you’re from,” said Haidee Aguiniga, a Lead Dental Assistant in the Aspen Dental network. “I wanted to be able to travel and make a difference, and that was the main reason why I was so excited to go on this trip. I wouldn’t have had this opportunity to serve in Mexico without being part of the Aspen Dental team and am grateful that these types of outreach programs exist for us to participate in.”

The success of this trip builds on the ongoing impact of Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement (HMM), a community-giving initiative launched in 2014 to deliver free dental care to those who need it most. Since the launch of HMM, dentists and their teams from Aspen Dental-branded offices have donated over $26 million in dentistry services to more than 33,000 people in need worldwide. Meeting the unique needs of underserviced communities is a core part of Aspen Dental’s mission. The Aspen Dental network spans more than 1,000 independent practitioners and, as the network of offices expands, Aspen Dental continues to make strides toward providing access to quality, affordable dental care for all who need it.

The Overseas Outreach Program provides opportunities for Aspen Dental network practitioners to travel the world while developing their skills and serving those who need dental care the most. The Overseas Outreach Program is only one of the many development opportunities that Aspen Dental branded practices provide to its employees. Sunbit is the Modern Patient Financing Tool of Choice for Dentists

Posted on Monday, November 28, 2022

500+ practices adopting Sunbit technology per month; national partnerships multiplying across ecosystem

Sunbit, the company building financial technology for everyday expenses, today announced that its leading patient financing technology is being embraced by dentists and patients across the country. Industry partners, DSOs, and independent practices have all chosen Sunbit because it offers access to fair, fast, and transparent financing terms, without hidden fees or “gotchas.” As of November 2022, dental is the fastest-growing market for the company, which has already served more than 1.4 million customers across verticals.

“Virtually everyone in the country can benefit from top-notch dental coverage. However, millions of Americans are forced to choose between paying out-of-pocket for necessary, and often unexpected, dental expenses or declining essential care recommended by their provider,” said Jay Letwat, Vice President of Dental, Sunbit. “Even patients with private dental insurance face coverage caps, which all but guarantee that any significant treatment will require a hefty out-of-pocket cost as well.”

Dentists are acutely aware of the need for fair and accessible patient financing. But, finding the right solution is difficult. According to a recent survey of 920 dentists, 83% of dental professionals offer a patient financing option, yet only 8% are completely satisfied with their solution.¹ This significant gap can only be addressed by a solution that approves the vast majority of applicants, within moments at checkout, and with fair terms, that enable patients to hold onto more of their hard-earned dollars.

According to the same survey, treatment acceptance increases by 57% once a patient qualifies for a third-party financing solution.

"We've utilized Sunbit to replace other financing tools, including in-house financing, and it's been a game-changer for our 50 locations. The simple and fast application process creates a much better experience for both patients and staff. We've provided a significantly greater amount of dentistry than we could have had we not had Sunbit as a tool. In fact, since launching, 90% of our patients who have applied have been approved, which has allowed thousands of patients to receive the dental care they needed, many of whom likely would not have been able to otherwise," said Lorri Detrick, Chief Operations Officer, Riccobene Associates.

Sunbit technology can be found in more than 6,000 dental locations, and in more than 550 DSOs, with more than 500 new offices being added each month. In addition, Sunbit’s technology is integrated with multiple platforms serving small- and medium-sized dental practices.

As Sunbit continues to cement partnerships with leading organizations such as Straumann Group, Kleer, Dental Whale and many industry-leading providers of lab services, software, consumables, and consulting services, its footprint is expanding exponentially.

Sunbit technology offers access to financing for dental procedures with 6 to 72-month payment plan options, and 85% of patients who apply using Sunbit technology are approved. All well-qualified patients get access to true no-interest payment plans at participating practices. By powering the application process and managing the collections process, Sunbit takes the burden of management out of the hands of the practices.

"Sunbit is a one-stop shop for patients across the credit spectrum. When Independence DSO partners with dental offices, one of the first things we recommend is Sunbit's patient financing solution. The "why" is pretty simple. It helps our partner practices serve more patients and generates incremental production for the offices,” said John Geary, Chief Operating Officer, Independence Dental Services. He added, “I have nearly 20 years of experience in retail healthcare & dental, and Sunbit is the most technologically advanced solution, helping so many people, and it is super simple for offices and patients to use. The results have been incredible—$2.1 million in incremental production, thousands of additional patients treated, and a more confident office team that knows they can trust the technology to help people in need."

Loans are made by Transportation Alliance Bank, Inc., dba TAB Bank, which determines qualifications for and terms of credit. The Sunbit Card is issued by TAB Bank, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. Use of the card is subject to the cardholder agreement.

Oral Care Brand Bitvae Receives American Dental Association Certificate for its D2 and S2 Smart Electric Toothbrushes

Posted on Monday, November 28, 2022

The brand's connected technology and intuitive product features help its users monitor and improve their oral care routine and that of their families.

Bitvae, a brand dedicated to making its customers' oral care routine easy and enjoyable with high-performance products, is pleased to announce that it has received the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance for its D2 Electric Toothbrush and S2 Smart Electric Toothbrush, both launched in early 2022. With over 1800 5-Star reviews on Amazon, these electric toothbrushes are uniquely designed to cater to their savvy customers while remaining extremely accessible.

"At Bitvae we are driven by a passion to make high-quality oral care accessible to everyone and this recognition from the American Dental Association shows that we are on the right path." said Hugh, founder and CEO of Bitvae. "Bitvae receiving this coveted designation lets our customers know that the D2 Electric Toothbrush and S2 Smart Electric Toothbrush rise to the level of safety and effectiveness that dental professionals recommend."

Born 160 years ago with the mission of driving dentistry forward, the American Dental Association (ADA) is the largest dental association in the US, representing more than 161,000 dental professionals. The ADA Seal of Acceptance has been the leading mark of dental product safety and efficacy for 90 years. For Bitvae, that means their accepted Bitvae electric toothbrushes meet the ADA specification for electric toothbrushes and have been proven to be safe and effective at removing plaque and helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis.

"We believe that with more intuitive and fun features we can help users improve their oral care habits while enjoying the process." said Hugh. "As a company that has been in the oral hygiene industry for more than five years, our goal remains to deliver high-performance oral care products that are both affordable and easy to use."

Hugh's vision of providing oral care products for a complete routine guides the company's product development strategy, as seen in its recently launched the C2 Portable Water Flosser. Rising to the Amazon bestseller ranking after only a few months on the market, this oral irrigator removes up to 99.9% of food debris and dental plaque and is a perfect complement to brushing.

Many of the brand's new products come as a direct request from its customers, as Hugh explains: "Keeping in very close communication with our users and ambassadors helps us understand their real needs. For example, for our users, having a great smile is a priority as it helps boost their self-confidence and a great smile generally means whiter teeth. However, many of them are concerned about sensitivity." With this feedback in mind, Bitvae recently launched its own kit of Teeth Whitening Strips for sensitive teeth. Made with natural minerals and revolutionary ingredients like Dead Sea salt, these whitening strips not only whiten like a professional-grade treatment, but also strengthen tooth enamel and reduce sensitivity.

Kerr Dental Releases ZenFlex™ ONE Reciprocating File for Efficient and Cost-Effective Endodontic Procedures

Posted on Wednesday, November 23, 2022

ZenFlex ONE Features a Counter-Clockwise Flute for Doctors Using Reciprocating Motion When Shaping

Kerr Dental announces the launch of its novel ZenFlex ONE reciprocating file featuring a counter-clockwise flute. The new ZenFlex ONE file, alongside its matching Gutta Percha and Paper Points, offers a simple solution for endodontic specialists and general practitioners performing root canal procedures.

Designed to be used with Kerr motors as well as other reciprocating motion motors, ZenFlex ONE has been tested to demonstrate more flexibility and resistance to cyclic fatigue than other leading files of equivalent size.

"In creating ZenFlex ONE, we leveraged our proprietary heat treatment process to minimize the tradeoff between flexibility and torsional strength," explains Yona Zhao, Senior Global Product Manager at Kerr Dental. "The result is a high-performing reciprocating file that practitioners can rely on when performing procedures for a wide range of anatomies." This feature has the additional benefit of shortening shaping time when compared to other leading files on the market.

Along with reliable performance and excellent flexibility, ZenFlex ONE offers innovative features that improve efficiency and allow for tooth structure preservation. "The unique design of the ZenFlex ONE includes a triangular cross-section that has high cutting efficiency, and a smaller maximum flute diameter compared to other similar files," says Elizabeth Mascarena, Marketing Manager at Kerr Dental. "ZenFlex ONE's non-cutting tip minimizes the risk of transportation and perforation during procedures, for an added layer of confidence."

With ZenFlex ONE, doctors now have an affordable, reliable, and durable reciprocating file that increases efficiency without the need to change technique.
