A new and revolutionary chapter for implant dentistry will open this summer in Madrid. At the upcoming Global Symposium, the first of three international events hosted by Nobel Biocare, outstanding developments in the field of implant design and site preparation will be unveiled. Supporting these groundbreaking innovations will be new advancements in implant surface technology as well as long-term implant care.

Leading international clinicians, all experts in their field, will be onsite in Madrid to share their experiences with the new solutions. They will also demonstrate how these can help clinicians to further shorten time-to-teeth and to improve long-term clinical results. Participants will be able to further explore the innovations and more through a number of dedicated hands-on sessions and product demonstrations.

Held at the Marriott Auditorium Hotel & Conference Center from 27-29 June, the Nobel Biocare Global Symposium in Madrid is kicking off the new global event series which was announced last year to extend the originally planned Nobel Biocare Global Symposium 2019 in Las Vegas. Henry Schein’s Steven Kess honored for pioneering program for children with disabilities

Posted on Thursday, March 21, 2019

American Friends of Shalva (AFOS) announced that Steven W. Kess, Vice President, Global Professional Relations, Henry Schein, Inc., and President, Henry Schein Cares Foundation, has received the Spirit of Hope Award at its 29th Anniversary Gala Dinner. The event was held on March 6, 2019 at Guastavino’s in New York City.

Mr. Kess was selected as this year’s recipient because of his role as a visionary partner in establishing the Oral Health for Everyone (OHEV) program at the Shalva National Center in Israel, one of the largest and most advanced centers for disability care and inclusion in the Middle East. The OHEV program is a pioneering program that systematically integrates oral health care and education into the rehabilitative programs and developmental goals of children with disabilities. Utilizing a unique, preventive approach with specially trained staff and a state-of-the-art dental clinic accessible to those with disabilities called The Henry Schein Cares Oral Health Clinic, the program annually provides 400 children at Shalva with oral health check-ups, fluoride varnish treatments, personal guidance, and education. The program receives visits by dentistry students from universities across the globe and serves as an international model for medical and disability care institutions.

“Working with Steve to develop the OHEV program and our continued partnership over the years has been a most inspirational experience,” says Kalman Samuels, founder and president of the Shalva organization. “You quickly learn that his celebrated professional achievements pale in comparison to his care and compassion for others.”

Messrs. Kess and Samuels are both members of the Project Accessible Oral Health Alliance. Mr. Kess has served as a member of the Shalva organization’s OHEV professional board since the program’s inception in 2014 and has instrumentally escorted the program’s development and establishment in 2017.

“Steve’s leadership of Henry Schein Cares’ partnership with Shalva to develop the Oral Health For Everyone program is just the latest example of countless innovative partnerships he has forged throughout his career to advance worthy goals, in this case providing transformative care for individuals with disabilities, empowering their families, and promoting social inclusion,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “Steve continues to build on Henry Schein’s commitment to expand access to care for people with special needs by improving health literacy, expanding geographic coverage, increasing cultural competency, and addressing the financial and reimbursement rates for special needs care. On behalf of more than 18,000 Team Schein Members, we salute him.”

Additional awardees at the AFOS gala dinner include the Shalva Band, an Israeli band of musicians with disabilities which was a candidate to be Israel’s representative at the Eurovision competition this year.

Shalva, The Israel Association for Care and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities provides an all-encompassing range of services for 2,000 individuals from infancy through adulthood and their families. Shalva gives equal access and opportunity to all participants regardless of religion, ethnic background, or financial capability.

Posted on Thursday, March 21, 2019

It’s a big day for VixWin Platinum software users. Originally released by Gendex™, the latest version of the VixWin Imaging software (3.6.0) now seamlessly integrates with DEXIS CariVu through its new Image Capture software module.

DEXIS CariVu uses cutting-edge transillumination technology to detect caries and cracks earlier and more precisely than by using radiographs alone. With 99 percent accuracy* in caries detection, CariVu has proven to help dental practitioners throughout the globe improve their diagnostic certainty.

With no ionizing radiation, this portable device is a game changer for any dental practice — especially for cosmetic/restorative dentists, pedodontists, holistic dentists, conservative practitioners or any practice looking for a safe and comfortable caries detection solution for their patients. Easy to read and understand, CariVu images are also a great patient education tool that can help patients play a more active role in their treatment planning.

The Image Capture module allows VixWin Platinum users to easily capture CariVu images and saves them directly to their existing patient charts. Compare CariVu images side-by-side with radiographs, intraoral photos or other CariVu images for a comprehensive look at a patient’s dental health.

Aspen Dental VIBE Session Brings Together More Than 125 Dental Students for One-of-a-Kind Recruiting Experience

Posted on Wednesday, March 20, 2019

More than 125 dental students from 35 dental schools across the country descended on Dallas over the weekend to participate in a one-of-a-kind Aspen Dental VIBE Session aimed at matching fourth-year dental students with Aspen Dental practice owners looking to hire new dentists upon graduation.

The result? By the end of the weekend, 20 candidates had accepted a full-time position at an Aspen Dental office upon graduation.

Roughly 6,000 dental students will graduate in 2019, and an estimated 25% will begin their career at a practice supported by a dental support organization (DSO). There is an industry-wide race to recruit top talent, which means that DSOs are becoming increasingly competitive to meet the shifting needs and expectations of graduating dental students.

“Now more than ever, it’s important that we continue to evolve in order to meet the needs of millennials and an increasingly diverse workforce,” said Dr. Arwinder Judge, chief clinical officer at ADMI. “Events like these are integral in helping dental students not only learn what Aspen Dental is all about, but also make it clear that dentists who join Aspen Dental are supported by mentors and an organization that will stop at nothing to enable their success throughout their entire career journey."

The VIBE Session took place at the historic Adolphus Hotel in Dallas from March 15-17 and was the first in a series of sessions currently planned throughout the country in 2019. Dental students heard from members of the ADMI leadership team, engaged in a panel discussion with dentists at various stages of their Aspen Dental career journey, and enjoyed remarks from keynote speaker Chip Madera, who encouraged them to build confidence and put exceptional patient experiences at the heart of everything they do.

The session concluded with approximately 250 interviews during a three-hour career guidance and interview period.

Added John Murphy, vice president of talent acquisition at ADMI, "The purpose of the VIBE Session was simple: immerse students in our unique culture, understand their goals and career aspirations, and align them with the right career opportunities. With nearly 20 candidates hired for opportunities across the country, the event was a win-win for participating students and Aspen Dental practice owners alike.”

AACD Charitable Foundation Receives the 2018 Mary Byron Award

Posted on Tuesday, March 19, 2019

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation (AACDCF) received the 2018 Mary Byron Project Celebrating Solutions Award in honor of the work it's done for adults who’ve suffered dental injuries from domestic and sexual violence. The Mary Byron Project Inc. fosters innovations and strategies to end domestic violence. This is the sixteenth year for the annual recognition, which showcases innovations that demonstrate promise in breaking the cycle of intimate partner violence.

For the Mary Byron Inc. awards, local and national experts help select programs they believe serve as models for the nation. Each winning program receives $10,000 in unrestricted funds. To date, the Mary Byron Project, Inc. has awarded over $1 million to innovative programs in 30 states across the nation.

The AACDCF was recognized by the Mary Byron Project for the work done by AACD member dentists, dental laboratories, and other dental professionals who have volunteered their time and expertise pro bono to restore the damaged smiles of more than 1,700 survivors of intimate partner violence for a total dollar value of more than $16 million. The AACDCF is honored to receive this award as they celebrate the 20-year anniversary of its Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program.

The GBAS program started its mission because of survivors like Dawn, who after being abused by her partner, woke up in the hospital with a fractured skull, broken ribs, a scarred face, and destroyed teeth. She lost her job, her house, and her self-respect, and spent years trying to rebuild her confidence. She was ashamed of the way she looked until a domestic abuse advocate told her about the Give Back a Smile program. Dawn is now getting her degree in counseling and working towards her dream of advocating for other women trapped in abusive relationships.

"GBAS gave me back the dignity my abuser had robbed me of. I no longer look in the mirror and see a tarnished woman. I see a beautiful smile and light in that woman’s eyes. I have become the selfie queen!” – Dawn, domestic abuse survivor

To ensure the Give Back a Smile program can provide services to survivors like Dawn for another twenty years, consider one of these many ways to support the program:
