At its 109th Annual Meeting in Austin, the American Academy of Periodontology is launching a new multi-year, multi-pronged initiative to educate dental hygienists on periodontal topics.

As part of the initiative, the AAP is hosting a Dental Hygiene Symposium at its Annual Meeting today. The daylong session provides an overview of several topics related to the successful management of the periodontal patient, such as peri-implantitis pathophysiology and treatment, and the role of soft tissue in long-term periodontal health and stability.

In addition to the symposium, the Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative includes:

• AAP member-led Dental Hygiene Study Clubs. These will provide AAP member periodontists materials and resources to facilitate programs in their local areas. The purpose of these study clubs is to enhance dental hygienists’ knowledge of periodontics and to help periodontists strengthen their local network.

• The Dental Hygiene Recognition Program. This program will encourage dental hygienists to engage with the AAP through the local Dental Hygiene Study Clubs, online on-demand content, and other CE courses. The more engagement, the higher the recognition.

• The Hygiene Learning Library. This online resource for dental hygienists will be unveiled at the Annual Meeting and its contents will evolve over time to include the most current information about periodontics.

• Collaborative efforts that could entail joint conferences, webinars, article series, and social media activities.

Dr. Wayne Aldredge, past president of the AAP who headed the Task Force on Dental Hygiene Engagement, said, “We developed the Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative to deliver high- quality, evidence-based information to hygienists with the goal of enhancing periodontal care and facilitating co-management of patients.”

Cardinal Orthodontics has announced the addition of renowned orthodontist, Dr. Brent Bowen, as lead provider for the practice, now serving patients in the St. Louis area at clinics in Rock Hill and Ballwin, Missouri. Minimally invasive laser treatment helps Air Force's largest dental unit provide unsurpassed readiness through integrated oral health

The 59th Dental Group is the Air Force's largest dental unit and is responsible for providing oral and maxillofacial healthcare while ensuring service members are medically ready for deployment around the world.

Periodontal disease affects up to 85% of adults and has been linked to many systemic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, which can impact airmen readiness for deployment.

"Periodontal disease can be particularly problematic for members of the military, many of whom have limited time for lengthy, painful and invasive dental procedures that can impact readiness," said Robert H. Gregg II, DDS, Founder, President and Chairman of the Board at Millennium Dental Technologies. "With the LANAP protocol, we can treat our military in a way that is less invasive and with faster readiness for deployment. In addition, our laser technology can be used for other procedures such as saving failing dental implants, preventing peri-implantitis and helping to ensure greater implant treatment success."

As part of the implementation, 16 airmen including periodontists and residents were selected for initial training and certification through the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD), a non-profit education and research center. The training involved several days of didactic and hands-on, live-patient procedures using the LANAP protocol and PerioLase MVP-7.
