Genco to Receive 2016 Distinguished Scientist Award from AADR

Posted on Tuesday, March 15, 2016

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Robert J. Genco, University at Buffalo world-renowned scientist, will receive the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Association for Dental Research (AADR).

The prestigious award, presented once every two years, recognizes Genco for his outstanding contributions to periodontal disease research.

He will be honored March 16 at the association’s 45th Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Los Angeles. As a recipient, Genco will receive a $5,000.

“I am honored to receive this award which recognizes work done not only by myself, but many colleagues at UB,” says Genco, PhD, DDS, SUNY Distinguished Professor of oral biology, periodontics and microbiology in the Department of Oral Biology in the UB School of Dental Medicine.

Formerly chair of the Department of Oral Biology for 25 years and current director of the Periodontal Disease Clinical Research Center, Genco and his colleagues were among the first to report a connection between gum disease and heart disease and stroke, and led studies relating periodontitis to diabetes and obesity.

Genco, also director of the Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach, has been the primary investigator on multimillion-dollar grants and has demonstrated success in commercializing both his discoveries and those of others.

Genco’s work focuses on understanding oral diseases. Most recently, his lab studied the effects of periodontal infections, as they increase the risk for heart disease and lower glycemic control in diabetics.

He has earned many awards throughout his career, and most recently received the 2012 Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Academy of Periodontology.

Along with having held editorial positions with 11 scientific journals, Genco has edited or co-edited 10 books, and authored more than 325 scientific articles and publications. He is also a past president of both the AADR and International Association of Dental Research.

A 1963 graduate of the UB School of Dental Medicine, Genco received a doctorate in microbiology and immunology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.

Prodways Sells Printers Using Laser Sintering Technology

Posted on Monday, March 14, 2016

Four months after the launch of its range of laser sintering printers dedicated to plastic powders, Prodways has announced the sale of 6 industrial machines using laser sintering technology, from its "Prodways by Farsoon" range. This announcement is the first success for the combined expertise in laser sintering of the R&D teams at Prodways, Norge, Farsoon and LSS.

The printers in this range use a high-power laser to fuse together successive layers of plastic powder. The six customers, including several international chemical and energy sector groups, were persuaded as a result of the printers’ high thermal stability and optimized mechanical properties, combined with a fully digital, high speed and very high precision laser scan system.

The Group highlights the fact that the laser sintering technology market is comparable in size to that of photosensitive liquid resins. This new range allows Prodways to cover the majority of industrial plastics applications in 3D printing.

•    Expansion of the sales network

Three weeks from the International AMUG (Additive Manufacturing Users Group) congress that will take place from April 3 to 7 in Saint Louis (United States), Prodways also announced the signature of six new sales partnerships. These six new agreements will enable Prodways to be present in Russia, Greece and Poland and to strengthen its presence in the United States.

In the United States, the Group is associated with the Nexxt Labs company (Minnesota), who has been a provider of additive manufacturing solutions in the United States since 2010. Its teams include 3D printing experts, recognized for their expertise and knowledge of this sector. This distributor will strengthen the Group's teams already present via its Prodways Americas subsidiary in this very high potential market.

In Poland, Prodways signed two agreements with the VPI Polska and Focus 3D companies. VPI Polska is a Polish company that specializes in market support for virtual or fast prototyping solutions. Focus 3D specializes in the distribution of 3D solutions for the dental market.

In Russia, the Group has also chosen to do business with two new partners: Consistent Software Distribution (CSD) and Ostec Corporate Group. Consistent Software Distribution (CSD) is a major distributor of CAD CAM and GIS software and systems in Russia. It has a structure of over 100 agents and resellers in the country. Ostec Corporate Group is one of the most important engineering companies in Russia and the ex-Soviet Union, offering engineering consulting and optimization services for the electronics industry. Since its creation in 1991, Ostec has supported more than 2,500 innovation projects for a wide range of sectors: electronics, electrical engineering, industrial equipment and telecommunications.

Lastly, in Greece, Prodways has decided to join forces with the Lino s.a. company (subsidiary of LinoGroup), a major integrator for the South-East Europe region, providing software, hardware, services and materials for the digital printing industry. Over the last few years, Lino s.a. has expanded its services to additive manufacturing. As a supplier of DLP MOVINGLight® technology for the region, Lino s.a. will ensure the service and sales distribution for this technology in South-East European countries.

These six new partners, whose solid market knowledge and customer-focused approach allow them to be recognized in their respective geographical zones, will assist Prodways' growth and support its strategic objective to become the third-largest world player offering multi-technological services and all 3D printing solutions.

Cavex Launches Breakthrough At-Home Whitening System

Posted on Monday, March 14, 2016

HAARLEM, NETHERLANDS, February 25, 2016—Cavex, the innovative Dutch manufacturer of professional dental products, today announced the North American launch of its Cavex Bite&White ABC Masterkit. The product is designed to make it easier for dental practices to provide whitening services to patients concerned about excessive sensitivity, unnaturally white teeth, or high cost.

To address these patient concerns, Cavex has taken an approach no other manufacturer has previously considered: a synergistic three-step process that dramatically reduces sensitivity while providing a natural white smile at an affordable price. And even though three steps are involved, the overall process is still very convenient for patients.

Cavex Bite & White ABC Masterkit consists of three components facilitating three steps. In Step A—for “Activation”—the user brushes with Cavex Bite & White Stainless, which removes surface stains and plaque and raises the pH of the mouth. This creates the perfect environment for Step B—for “Brightening”—in which the patient fills dentist-provided trays with a whitening gel containing 16% carbamide peroxide (equal to 6% hydrogen peroxide). This unique gel exhibits thixotropic behavior: it adheres to the tooth surface rather than running to the tooth neck and gingiva, where sensitivity can be a problem with other whiteners. The gel also contains potassium nitrate to further avoid sensitivity, as well as sodium fluoride to reinforce enamel. The trays need only be worn for 50 to 60 minutes.

Step C—for “Conditioning”—involves the user placing Cavex Bite & White ExSense gel in the trays, which should be worn for 10 minutes. The ExSense gel contains a revolutionary blend of hydroxyapatite and a hydro-dispersing clay. The clay accelerates the dispersion of the hydroxyapatite deep into the tubules and micro-cracks in the enamel, thereby sealing off the areas most likely to cause sensitivity. The hydroxyapatite also initiates a process of crystallization that helps restore micro-hardness and accelerate the re-mineralization process.

Dental practices can use the Cavex Bite & White ABC Masterkit as an at-home means of supplementing in-office whitening, or as a convenient, time-saving alternative to in-office whitening, with minimal staff training required.

The Cavex Bite & White ABC Masterkit received a “four plus” rating from The Dental Advisor. The product received an impressive 87% clinical rating, and the vast majority of evaluators rated the system equal to or better than their current system and said they would recommend it to their colleagues.

“These testing results, as well as the great success we are seeing with European dental practices, prove that with the Cavex Bite & White ABC Masterkit, whitening need not be frightening,” said Hans Maarten den Boer, Cavex Managing Director. “And that is great news for people looking for a naturally white smile with no sensitivity and at a reasonable price, and for dental practices looking to efficiently increase their teeth whitening production.”

The Cavex Bite & White ABC Masterkit is distributed in the United States by Benco Dental and Practicon Dental.

Link Between Gum Disease and Cognitive Decline in Alzheimer's

Posted on Friday, March 11, 2016

A new study jointly led by King’s College London and the University of Southampton has found a link between gum disease and greater rates of cognitive decline in people with early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Periodontitis or gum disease is common in older people and may become more common in Alzheimer’s disease because of a reduced ability to take care of oral hygiene as the disease progresses. Higher levels of antibodies to periodontal bacteria are associated with an increase in levels of inflammatory molecules elsewhere in the body, which in turn has been linked to greater rates of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease in previous studies.

The latest study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, set out to determine whether periodontitis or gum disease is associated with increased dementia severity and subsequent greater progression of cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

In the observational study, 59 participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease were cognitively assessed and a blood sample was taken to measure inflammatory markers in their blood. Participants’ dental health was assessed by a dental hygienist who was blind to cognitive outcomes. The majority of participants (52) were followed-up at six months when all assessments were repeated.

The presence of gum disease at baseline was associated with a six-fold increase in the rate of cognitive decline in participants over the six-month follow-up period of the study. Periodontitis at baseline was also associated with a relative increase in the pro-inflammatory state over the six-month follow-up period. The authors conclude that gum disease is associated with an increase in cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s Disease, possibly via mechanisms linked to the body’s inflammatory response.

Limitations of the study included the small number of participants; the authors advise that the study should be replicated ideally with a larger cohort. The precise mechanisms by which gum disease may be linked to cognitive decline are not fully clear and other factors might also play a part in the decline seen in participants’ cognition alongside their oral health.

However, growing evidence from a number of studies links the body’s inflammatory response to increased rates of cognitive decline, suggesting that it would be worth exploring whether the treatment of gum disease might also benefit the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Professor Clive Holmes, senior author from the University of Southampton, says: “These are very interesting results which build on previous work we have done that shows that chronic inflammatory conditions have a detrimental effect on disease progression in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Our study was small and lasted for six months so further trials need to be carried out to develop these results. However, if there is a direct relationship between periodontitis and cognitive decline, as this current study suggests, then treatment of gum disease might be a possible treatment option for Alzheimer’s.”

Dr Mark Ide, first author from the Dental Institute at King’s College London says: “Gum disease is widespread in the UK and US, and in older age groups is thought to be a major cause of tooth loss. In the UK in 2009, around 80% of adults over 55 had evidence of gum disease, whilst 40% of adults aged over 65-74 (and 60% of those aged over 75) had less than 21 of their original 32 teeth, with half of them reporting gum disease before they lost teeth.

“A number of studies have shown that having few teeth, possibly as a consequence of earlier gum disease, is associated with a greater risk of developing dementia. We also believe, based on various research findings, that the presence of teeth with active gum disease results in higher body-wide levels of the sorts of inflammatory molecules which have also been associated with an elevated risk of other outcomes such as cognitive decline or cardiovascular disease. Research has suggested that effective gum treatment can reduce the levels of these molecules closer to that seen in a healthy state.

“Previous studies have also shown that patients with Alzheimer’s Disease have poorer dental health than others of similar age and that the more severe the dementia the worse the dental health, most likely reflecting greater difficulties with taking care of oneself as dementia becomes more severe.”
