Tooth Loss and Untreated Caries Predict Food Intake Limitations

Posted on Wednesday, March 16, 2016

Los Angeles, Calif., USA - Today at the 45th Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research, researcher Hongjun Yin, DB Consulting Group, Inc., Alpharetta, Ga., USA, will present a study titled “Tooth Loss and Untreated Caries Predict Food Intake Limitations.” The AADR Annual Meeting is being held in conjunction with the 40th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.

In this study, researchers examined the association between untreated dental caries and tooth retention and limitations in food intake using data for 6,885 adults age 25 years or older from the 1999-2000 and 2001-2002 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The dependent variable was whether a person reported limiting the kinds and amount of food eaten because of problems with his/her teeth or dentures (i.e., reported frequency of limited food intake [LF] was “sometimes to always” versus “seldom or never”). Explanatory variables of primary interest were dentate status – having most teeth (five or fewer missing teeth, having few teeth (6 - 27 missing teeth)), or no teeth – and number of teeth with untreated decay – no untreated decay, untreated decay equal to or less than one. The logistic regression model also included potential covariates – age, race/ethnicity, education, gender, family income relative to federal poverty level and self-reported general health.

The researchers obtained adjusted odds ratios and prevalence of limited food intake from their regression. All reported findings were significant at p<=0.05. About 60% of adults had most of their teeth and no untreated decay; among these persons the adjusted prevalence of limited food intake was eight percent. Limited food intake prevalence was about 11 percentage points higher for adults with untreated decay greater than one versus untreated decay equal to zero, whether they retained few or most of their teeth. Limited food intake prevalence was about 13 percentage points higher among adults with few teeth vs. most whether untreated decay equal to zero or one, or greater than one. Limited food intake prevalence did not differ between those with either no teeth or few teeth with no untreated decay. Other predictors of reporting limited food intake included being female, of other race/ethnicity, reporting fair or poor general health and low family income.

The findings indicate that having few teeth and/or tooth decay limit people’s food intake, which may affect a person’s quality of life.

This is a summary of oral presentation #0044, “Tooth Loss and Untreated Caries Predict Food Intake Limitations,” which will be presented on Wednesday March 16, 2016, 2:45 p.m. – 3 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center, room #403A.

National Prosthodontics Awareness Week is April 3-9

Posted on Wednesday, March 16, 2016

CHICAGO, March 15, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Prosthodontics is one of only nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, yet many people still don't know what a prosthodontist is or does. The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) is shedding light on these highly skilled dental specialists with advanced training who help patients achieve their perfect smile and optimal oral health as part of National Prosthodontics Awareness Week (NPAW), April 3-9, 2016.

"To honor 2016 National Prosthodontics Awareness Week, the ACP will be offering free access to selected research from the Journal of Prosthodontics. This could not have occurred at a better time, as the ACP has just released groundbreaking Clinical Practice Guidelines, which will be available for FREE as selected peer-reviewed research, as a way to celebrate," said ACP President Carl F. Driscoll, DMD, FACP.

Today, more than 120 million Americans are missing one or more teeth, and more than 35 million Americans are missing all of their teeth in one or both jaws, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) NHANES Study. A recent Journal of Prosthodontics' article in the January 2016 Issue by Dr. David A. Felton, DDS, MSD, FACP, titled "Complete Edentulism and Comorbid Diseases: An Update" cites dozens of studies throughout the medical literature showing that missing one or more teeth is correlated with unfavorable health outcomes.

The good news is that there is a solution…getting teeth replaced immediately and restored and keeping as many natural teeth for most of your life appears to mitigate many of these health risks. Also, once a patient has replaced and restored teeth, how should patients take care of them to keep them in tip-top shape?

Fortunately, the ACP has recently released the first Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for Restored Teeth. Prosthodontists have offered tips to care for restored teeth at home and for life backed by science, and they can be found here for a free download: Special Issue: ACP Clinical Practice Guidelines: Recall and Maintenance of Patients with Tooth-Borne and Implant-Borne Dental Restorations.

"Restored teeth using implants or traditional methods require lifelong maintenance in order to last longer, function well, and look gorgeous. Before the CPGs, we anecdotally understood some aspects of what worked, to care for restored teeth, but we now have clinical guidelines that all dentists can use to provide for professional and at-home lifelong care options," added Avinash Bidra, BDS, MS, FACP, lead author for the guidelines and NPAW Chair.

Prosthodontists are specialized dentists with advanced training in oral health issues, who are committed to improving patient outcomes. From implants, crowns, veneers and tooth whitening, to full-mouth reconstruction, Prosthodontists specialize in digital dentistrycosmetic dentistry, and sleep apnea solutions.

Dispelling Myths of Root Canals Through Education

Posted on Tuesday, March 15, 2016

CHICAGO - Despite state-of-the-art advancements in endodontic treatment that make root canal procedures often as straightforward as fillings, Americans still express fear of the procedure. According to a recent survey by the American Association of Endodontists, 67 percent of Americans say fear of pain most concerns them about having root canal treatment.

The AAE hopes to dispel these fears during its tenth anniversary celebration of Root Canal Awareness Week, March 27 – April 2. Root Canal Awareness Week is a nationwide effort to encourage patients who need a root canal to see an endodontist to save their natural teeth. Endodontists have at least two years of additional training beyond dental school and are highly skilled specialists in performing root canals and diagnosing and treating tooth pain. Their mix of advanced training, techniques and equipment improve patient comfort, ease anxiety and alleviate pain.

"Endodontists, the root canal specialists, devote their practice to root canal treatment and related procedures," said AAE President Dr. Terryl A. Propper, a private practicing endodontist in Nashville, Tenn. "We use technologies like microscopes, digital and 3-D imaging and ultrasonics to diagnose and treat our patients quickly, comfortably and successfully."

AAE research shows that dentists refer an average of 43 percent of root canal patients to an endodontist, yet almost all general dentists surveyed, 94 percent, say they have a positive or very positive perception of endodontists and the care they provide.

"Even if your dentist does not recommend a root canal specialist, ask about the benefits of consulting one," said Dr. Propper. "Americans are taking more control of their health care, and that should include oral health. Patients who need root canal treatment should consider seeing an endodontist."

Tips for Selecting an Endodontist

Cover the basics.Look for an endodontist who is both convenient and accessible. Inquire about specialists near your home or workplace, and find out if the endodontist's office is open during alternative hours, such as evenings or weekends. Ask whether specific endodontists accept your insurance plan or offer financing options. You may utilize the Find an Endodontist tool at www.aae.org to aid in the search.

Look for a solid track record.Ask how long the endodontist has been performing root canals and how frequently he or she does the procedure. If your general dentist is suggesting a root canal, find out as much as possible about why you need it; then choose an experienced endodontist who has dealt with issues similar to yours. AAE members receive ongoing news and education on the latest research and technologies to help them stay at the forefront of the specialty. Some endodontists are also Board certified, which means they have successfully passed a number of rigorous exams beyond their specialty training. Use the Find an Endodontist tool at www.aae.org to find an AAE member.

Ask about equipment. The most up-to-date endodontic equipment includes operating microscopes and rotary instrumentation that make getting to the "root" of a dental problem easier and faster. Endodontists are more likely than general dentists to have the most advanced equipment, but find out specifically how the endodontist's equipment will help during the procedure. Find out more about what you can expect during your visit with the specialist at https://www.aae.org/patients/root-canal-awareness-week.aspx.

Your endodontist will collaborate with your dentist on a treatment plan, and after a root canal, both should continue to monitor the success of the procedure.

For more information about the AAE and Root Canal Awareness Week, follow the AAE on Twitter at @savingyourteeth or search #rootcanal. To find an endodontist in your area, ask your general dentist for a referral, or use the Find an Endodontist feature at www.aae.org.
