2016 OSAP Infection Control Boot Camp Sets Records

Posted on Thursday, January 21, 2016

ANNAPOLIS, MD. – January 21, 2016– The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), the advocate for The Safest Dental Visit™, reports that its Dental Infection Control Boot Camp™, held in Atlanta, Georgia, January 11-13, set records for attendance, speakers, and content. The annual “basic training” program covers all of the core infection prevention fundamentals for dental practitioners, but this year’s meeting featured a record 15 speakers, including 5 representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Director of the Division of Oral Health at CDC, Katherine Weno DDS, JD. Attendees were also were given a sneak peek at the new CDC Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings: Basic Expectations for Safe Care, which builds on the CDC Guidelines issued in 2003.

The OSAP Boot Camp featured national and international experts in infection prevention and safety. “We are very fortunate to have a stellar faculty of world-renowned infection prevention experts who will contribute their knowledge and expertise to this curriculum,” said OSAP Executive Director Therese Long. “The manufacturers and distributors also are generous supporters of the course and we recognize and thank them for their commitment to OSAP and dental safety.” One of the stand-out activities this year was “Traveling the Instrument Processing Pathway,” which provided hands-on training addressing the pre-cleaning, transport, washing, and disinfection of instruments; instrument wrapping and chemical indicators and integrators; and sterilizer loading, unloading, and monitoring.

Boot Camp is targeted to dental personnel who desire a strong foundation in infection control, infection control coordinators, educators, and compliance officers, federal service employees with infection control responsibilities, federally qualified health center personnel, consultants, and sales representatives.

OSAP recognized and thanked the US Federal Services for supporting the course over the past 2 decades. Dr. Shannon Mills, Col USAF (RET) conceived the OSAP-Federal Services alliance in 1994. The course has evolved into a foundational course for which civilians and the military both benefit. “We greatly appreciate the expertise contributed by members of the curriculum development committee comprising Dr. David Carr, Dr. Randy Coffey, Kathy Eklund RDH MHP, Earl Fillmore BAS BSN MS, Dr. Leslie Grant, Dr. Kelli Mack, Dr. Chris Miller, Carol Oeder CDA LPN, Dr. Doug Risk and Dr. Scott Trapp,” said Long. Special recognition and thanks were given to Dr. Marie Fluent who spearheaded the entire program. Her hard work, dedication, and deep knowledge of the subject matter made a significant difference in the quality of the educational course.

Celebrating over 30 years of service to the worldwide dental community, OSAP is a growing community of clinicians, educators, students, policy-makers, and industry representatives who advocate for safe and infection-free delivery of oral healthcare. OSAP focuses on strategies to improve compliance with safe practices and on building a strong network of recognized infection control experts. OSAP offers an extensive online collection of resources, publications, FAQs, checklists and toolkits to help dental professionals ensure that every visit is The Safest Dental Visit™ for patients and the dental team. First-of-its-Kind PSA Campaign Targets the 86 Million American Adults with Prediabetes

Posted on Thursday, January 21, 2016

New York, NY January 21, 2016:Losing weight and being healthier are at the top of everyone’s New Year’s resolutions. But, despite the best intentions, work, kids, and social events often push lifestyle changes to the bottom of the list. While many are familiar with type 2 diabetes, fewer are aware of prediabetes, a serious health condition that affects 86 million Americans (more than 1 in 3) and often leads to type 2 diabetes. People with prediabetes have higher than normal blood glucose (sugar) levels, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

To raise awareness and help people with prediabetes know where they stand and how to prevent type 2 diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have partnered with the Ad Council to launch the first national public service advertising (PSA) campaign about prediabetes. The PSA campaign, featuring first-of-its-kind communications techniques, was developed pro bono by Ogilvy & Mather New York for the Ad Council.

Nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it and aren’t aware of the long-term risks to their health, including type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Current trends suggest that, if not treated, 15 to 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years. The good news is that prediabetes often can be reversed through weight loss, diet changes and increased physical activity. Diagnosis is key: research shows that once people are aware of their condition, they are much more likely to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

The campaign launched today and has a simple but strong message: No one is excused from prediabetes. Humorous PSAs in English and Spanish encourage people to take a short online test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org to learn their risk. People can also take the risk test in real-time through interactive TV and radio PSAs, and learn more about the risk factors associated with the condition. The campaign website features lifestyle tips and links to CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program, which connects visitors to a registry of CDC-recognized programs across the country. The campaign also includes an integrated SMS texting initiative which will allow people to take the risk test via text message and receive ongoing support and lifestyle tips. Per the Ad Council’s model, all media will run in time and space entirely donated.

“Awareness is crucial in the effort to stop type 2 diabetes,” said David Marrero, Ph.D., Director of the Diabetes Translation Research Center at the Indiana University School of Medicine and former President, Health Care & Education at the American Diabetes Association. “Take one minute to take the risk test today and share it with your loved ones. The prediabetes risk test will help you know where you stand and help us get closer to our vision of a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens.”

“Knowing that you have prediabetes is just the first step in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes,” said AMA President-Elect Andrew W. Gurman, M.D. “As soon as someone discovers they may be at risk of prediabetes, they should talk with their physician about further testing to confirm their diagnosis and discuss the necessary lifestyle changes needed to help prevent type 2 diabetes.”

“For the 86 million Americans with prediabetes, we need to communicate a sense of urgency -- that it’s time to take action,” said Ann Albright, Ph.D., R.D., director of CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation. “By participating in a CDC-recognized diabetes prevention program, people with prediabetes can learn practical, real-life changes and cut their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.”

“I think the scary thing is that this really touches everyone – 1 in 3 could be your brother or sister, your best friend or partner,” said Lisa Sherman, President and CEO of the Ad Council. “Our hope is that the risk test will make it easy for people to know where they stand, and motivate them to take steps to reverse their condition.”

“With this campaign we are hoping to spark a change because the reality is that the majority of the public is either unaware or does not take prediabetes seriously,” said Corinna Falusi, Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy & Mather New York Advertising. “We created the real-time test, which is the first of its kind and addresses people’s naivety of prediabetes, allowing prediabetes tests to be conducted in a 60-second TV commercial. Instead of simply educating the viewer, we are pushing them to take action in the moment and get results from that action.”

The ADA, AMA and CDC are working with their local offices, affiliates, and partners to promote and activate the campaign in their communities, with resources for physicians and other health care providers to aid in the screening, diagnosis and treatment process.

Roland DGA Recognized as a Top Workplace

Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Irvine, CA–Roland DGA Corporation has been recognized as a Top Workplace by the Orange County Register. This marks the sixth year that Roland DGA has been awarded this honor by the county’s largest newspaper.

The list of Top Workplaces is based solely on the results of an employee feedback survey administered by WorkplaceDynamics, LLC, a research firm that specializes in organizational health and workplace improvement. Several aspects of workplace culture were measured, including Alignment, Execution, and Connection, just to name a few.

“The Top Workplaces award is not a popularity contest, and oftentimes people assume it’s all about fancy perks and benefits,” says Doug Claffey, CEO of WorkplaceDynamics. “But to be a Top Workplace, organizations must meet our strict standards for organizational health, and who better to ask about work life than the people who live in the culture every day – the employees. Our research has proven that what’s most important to them is a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it’s going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together.”

“We’re thrilled to be named one of Orange County’s top workplaces for a sixth time,” said Rick Scrimger, president of Roland DGA. “Consistently receiving this kind of recognition reflects Roland DGA’s dedication to its employees and our work environment. While we are committed to continuously providing our customers with high quality products and world-class service and support, we have a lot of fun doing it. That makes Roland DGA not only a successful company, but also the kind of workplace you look forward to coming to every morning.”

3M Oral Care Releases RelyX™ Fiber Post 3D Glass Fiber Post

Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2016

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (Jan. 20, 2016) – Often teeth that have undergone endodontic therapy are rendered compromised with regard to structural integrity and esthetics. To combat this common issue, dentists understand the importance of using an endodontic fiber post to recreate an abutment and preserve tooth strength. But placing a fiber post can often be time-consuming and inefficient, adding multiple steps to an already complicated endodontic procedure. With the new RelyX™ Fiber Post 3D, 3M introduces an integral component of 3M’s new streamlined post and core solution.

The new RelyX Fiber Post 3D builds on 8 years of clinical success of the original RelyX Fiber Post. Its updated design offers higher mechanical retention to the core build-up material thanks to coronal 3D macro retentions, and maintains a strong bond in the root canal due to its microporous surface. Post position control within the canal is greatly improved as a result of RelyX Fiber Post 3D’s enhanced radiopacity. And, in combination with not more than three other easy-to use 3M products, the entire post and core build-up procedure can be significantly simplified and requires just four simple steps:

1. Dentists begin by applying the ready-mixed RelyX™ Unicem 2 Automix Self-Adhesive Universal Resin Cement directly into the root canal from bottom to top using an endo tip for a virtually void-free mix.

2. Following cement application, RelyX Fiber Post 3D is placed in the canal without pretreatment such as etching or silanization.

3. Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive is then applied to the post and surrounding tooth structure providing a reliable bond to the core build-up material.

4. After adhesive application, Filtek™ Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative enables a fast, easy and void-free core build-up around the post.

“Performing endodontic restorative procedures can be complicated and often come with a lot of variables that a dentist can’t control,” said James Braun, DDS, MS, of Saginaw, Mich. “With the 3M post and core solution, I can feel confident that I receive a robust and reliable outcome from a simple procedure.”

Powerful New Ads Mark the 5th Year of the Successful "Tips From Former Smokers" Campaign

Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2016

ATLANTA, Jan. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A brand-new series of emotionally powerful ads kick off the fifth year of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign. The new ads tell moving, personal stories of Americans suffering from smoking-related illnesses, including heart disease, tooth loss, depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Beginning January 25, the ads will run consecutively for 20 weeks on television, radio, billboards, online, and in magazines and newspapers.

In 2015, Tips ads had an immediate and strong impact, showing the campaign's sustained success since its launch in 2012. When the ads were on the air, about 62 percent more people called the national quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, for free help. Since 2012, Tips ads have generated more than 600,000 additional calls to the toll-free quitline number.

"More than 30 courageous people have shared their stories through the Tips campaign since 2012," said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. "These real-life stories show, in a way that statistics can't, the suffering and disability smoking causes.  Most Americans who have ever smoked have already quit, and most people who still smoke want to quit – this campaign will help them try and help them succeed."

One of this year's new ad participants is Becky, 54, an attorney from Ohio, who started smoking at 16. By the time she was 45, Becky was a mother of two and had her dream job as a child-advocate attorney. Then Becky was diagnosed with COPD. She had to quit her job and suffered a collapsed lung. She managed to quit smoking at age 52, but now has end-stage COPD and is tethered to an oxygen tank at all times.

New ads highlight harms of smoking, benefits of quitting

The ads also feature:

•    Brian, 60, a military veteran from Texas, who started smoking at age 8 and had his first heart attack at 35.

•    Rebecca, 57, a Florida grandmother of three who began smoking at 16. She suffered tooth loss and depression. She finally quit at 53. Six months later, she ran a 5K race to celebrate.

•    Rico, 48, a businessman from California, who started smoking at 14 and was diagnosed with cancer at 44. He quit, increasing his chances of survival, and was able to see his daughter graduate high school.

•    Kristy, 36, from Tennessee, started smoking cigarettes at 13, and tried to quit smoking by using e-cigarettes and cutting back on the number of cigarettes she smoked. Kristy kept smoking traditional cigarettes but eventually stopped using e-cigarettes. She finally quit smoking for good at age 33 after suffering a collapsed lung. Kristy was also featured in the 2015 campaign.

Smokers who cut down on the number of cigarettes by adding another tobacco product, like e-cigarettes, still face serious health risks. Smokers must quit smoking completely to fully protect their health — even a few cigarettes a day are dangerous.

Cigarette smoking remains the single largest cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, killing more than 480,000 Americans each year. And for every American who dies from a smoking-related disease, about 30 more suffer at least one serious illness from smoking.

Besides the harm it does to peoples' lives, cigarette smoking also seriously harms the U.S. economy. It costs more than $300 billion a year — nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults and more than $156 billion in lost productivity. The Tips campaign is an important counter to the more than $9 billion spent annually by the tobacco industry to make cigarettes more attractive and more affordable, particularly to young people.

The Tips ads encourage smokers to call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or to visit www.cdc.gov/tips to view the personal stories from the campaign. The website includes detailed assistance developed by the National Cancer Institute to support smokers trying to quit. For more information on the Tips campaign, including profiles of the former smokers, other campaign resources and links to the ads, visit www.cdc.gov/tips.

Dr. Neil Park Joins Glidewell

Posted on Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Newport Beach, CA- Glidewell Laboratories announced today the hire of Dr. Neil Park as their Director of Clinical Affairs, a new position created to oversee the clinical aspects of product research and development. In addition to coordinating the activities of the company’s clinical staff, Dr. Park will help guide the company’s training and education efforts to meet the needs of dentists and enhance knowledge and awareness of new techniques, materials, and procedures.

After graduating from Temple University School of Dentistry, Dr. Park practiced as a general dentist for 12 years before moving on to an accomplished career in the dental implant industry. This included a 19-year stint with Nobel Biocare during which he managed the company’s continuing education programs and university relationships, and helped bring several key implant systems and restorative solutions to market. As part of this effort, Dr. Park was key in developing and implementing a pre-doctoral implant curriculum in universities throughout North America.

In 2010 Dr. Park transitioned from Nobel Biocare to ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers. There, he led efforts to increase patient acceptance of full-arch implant treatment.

Most recently, Dr. Park was at the helm of professional development at Zimmer BiometDental, where he oversaw practitioner education programs and managed the company’s relationships with universities and national dental associations. Having joined Glidewell Laboratories, Dr. Park is eager to aid the company’s efforts to improve treatment outcomes and expand patient access to care.

“Glidewell Laboratories has a unique perspective as a manufacturer of dental implants and prosthetics because of our long history supporting doctors in planning and restoring cases. We have a staff of clinicians that test the effectiveness of techniques, products and treatment protocols,” Dr. Park recently noted. “Dentists want to know that their restorations will be durable, esthetic, and serve the patient well. Our one-of-a-kind clinical operation allows the opportunity to develop implants and prostheses that accomplish just that and have been verified using licensed dentists and real patients.”

“This capability really doesn’t exist anywhere else,” he continued. “We generate a great deal of useful clinical data from a large number of patients, and we utilize that research to guide doctors in their choice of materials and techniques. Doctors want confidence in the restorations they prescribe, and 45 years as a market-leading dental lab has given us a great idea of what materials and implant designs will work well in the hands of dentists.”

In addition to overseeing the clinical aspect of product research, development, and evaluation, Dr. Park’s accomplished background in doctor training and education will inform the company’s efforts to help practitioners incorporate the latest procedures and technologies. Now that most dental school graduates have received some basic training in diagnosing, treatment planning, and restoring implant cases — a development he fostered during his tenure with Nobel Biocare — Dr. Park recognizes that the role of implant manufacturers in continuing education has shifted. “Glidewell Laboratories understands that the best way to serve dentists is by leveraging technology, innovation and education to improve the results and value they can deliver for patients, and I look forward to contributing to that effort.”

Dr. Park will be instrumental to the accelerating rollout of the Hahn™ Tapered Implant System, which was released in 2015 and designed by Dr. Jack Hahn, a pioneer in implantologyand developer of the original tapered implant. “Dr. Hahn has been placing and designing implants for quite some time and has seen what has worked and what hasn’t firsthand. His latest implant blends clinically proven features and innovations inspired by the four-decades-plus he’s been practicing implant dentistry. I’m excited to help get the word out on how this system can get practitioners even better results.”

No Compelling Evidence Associating Fluoride, Bone Cancer, ADA Says

Posted on Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Research Triangle Park, N.C.— The American Dental Association Jan. 15 told the National Toxicology Program there is no compelling evidence that fluoride is associated with osteosarcoma, according to ADA News.

“For the last 70 years, people have raised well-meaning questions about the safety and effectiveness of fluoride, including whether fluoride is somehow associated with cancer,” wrote ADA President Carol Gomez Summerhays and ADA Executive Director Kathleen O’Loughlin in a letter to National Toxicology Program director Ruth Lunn, DrPH. “However, we are not convinced a sufficient number of new high-quality studies are currently available to produce a high-quality systematic review at this time.”
