Prodways Partners With Farsoon

Posted on Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Prodways Group, a subsidiary of Groupe Gorgé, has announced the signing of a major partnership with the Chinese company Hunan Farsoon High-Tech, regarding selective laser sintering technologies for plastic and metal powders. Prodways’ group will rapidly develop a full range of plastic and metal printers under the “Prodways powered by Farsoon” line, based on the current range of Farsoon’s machines. These 3D printers will be marketed worldwide by Prodways in the coming months, together with related materials.

These world-class industrial 3D selective laser sintering printers will enable Prodways to compete with the existing market players, becoming the only non-American company to offer a very large range of technologies using plastic and metal powders, as well as liquid resins.

Farsoon says it is the third-largest manufacturer in the world of industrial 3D printing machines using selective laser sintering of plastics and is developing high-quality plastic and metal technologies. The company, created in 2009 and employing 200 people, also boasts its own industrial facilities including, in particular, a chemical plant dedicated to the manufacture of sintering powder for additive manufacturing, which, according to Farsoon, makes it the second-largest manufacturer in the world of materials for selective laser sintering of plastics.

This strategic partnership brings together the acknowledged skills of Dr. Xu Xiaoshu, founder of Farsoon and a global reference in the field of selective laser sintering for more than 20 years, and Dr. André-Luc Allanic, co-founder of Prodways and inventor of the MOVINGLight® technology.
"Farsoon and Prodways share the same vision and the same values of innovation and a constant search for the best solutions for their industrial customers. Moreover, Dr. Xu and Dr. Allanic have already worked together at 3D Systems before founding their own companies and developing groundbreaking 3D printing solutions,” says Philippe Laude, Deputy Managing Director of Prodways Group.

Combining the companies’ R&D resources will create a very powerful research facility, allowing them to rapidly develop selective laser sintering printers using plastic and metal powders. These will be marketed by Prodways worldwide under the “Prodways powered by Farsoon” brand. A dedicated assembly line for these new machines will be installed in Les Mureaux (Prodways’ site).
Farsoon will benefit from the global coverage provided by Prodways.

“I am delighted by this partnership with Prodways, which boasts a well-known brand and has a very extensive network of dealers and service providers, and allows innovative solutions based on our technologies to be proposed to industrial customers worldwide,” Xu says.

Investment in Varia 3D

Prodways also announced that a significant stake had been taken in Varia 3D, based in Texas. As the commercial long-standing partner of Farsoon, Varia 3D offers service bureau activities, machine maintenance, and technical upgrades on machines, with significant expertise in selective laser sintering.
Its founders, Brian Bauman and Chuck Kennedy, are acknowledged experts in selective laser sintering using plastic and metal powders; they will join the Prodways Americas teams.
Their expertise will boost the selective laser sintering technology know-how already available in Prodways following the acquisition of the assets of the British company Norge Systems last March. This stake of 45% may be increased in the future. It strengthens Prodways’ footprint in the United States, a move first made with the creation of the Prodways Americas subsidiary in Minneapolis in February 2015.

Ultradent's Newest Endodontic Offerings

Posted on Tuesday, September 22, 2015

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, September 21, 2015– Ultradent Products Inc. proudly introduces the Endo-Eze EVOS endodontic motor, the Endo-Eze EVOS 8:1 contra-angle, and the Endo-Eze Genius reciprocation and rotary files.

Clinicians no longer have to choose between the safety of reciprocation and the efficiency of rotary, thanks to the Endo-Eze EVOS (Endodontic Variable Operating System) motor, which allows for easy movement between the two modes. The EVOS motor is an electric, motor-driven handpiece intended for root canal preparation procedures in the endodontic field. The device consists of a control unit, featuring an LCD screen with a selection of settings. The unit includes a foot pedal, allowing the clinicians to selectively activate/deactivate the motor at will. Pre-programmed for the Genius files, the EVOS motor helps minimize the risk of file separation (in reciprocation mode) while shaping and removing debris efficiently (in rotation mode) — seamlessly meeting the need for safety and efficiency.

The Endo-Eze EVOS contra-angle is an 8:1 reduction, stainless steel contra-angle intended for use during endodontic treatment. The EVOS contra-angle can rotate in both rotary and reciprocation mode, depending on the motor settings. The EVOS contra-angle can be used with the EVOS motor and Genius files, but is also compatible with other endodontic systems on the market.

Last, the Endo-Eze Genius files are designed for use in endodontic treatment for shaping and cleaning the root canal system. The working part of each Genius file consists of nickel-titanium alloy, heat-treated to increase flexibility while retaining strength in order to provide superior instrumentation. The Endo-Eze Genius files were designed specifically for use with the EVOS motor and can be used in both reciprocation and rotary mode.

New ADHA White Paper Offers Insights on Changes in Dental Hygiene Education

Posted on Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Chicago (Sept. 22, 2015) — Beginning Sept. 24, 2015, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association will be sharing a landmark white paper, “Transforming Dental Hygiene Education and the Profession for the 21st Century,” with the oral health and health care communities, allied stakeholders and others committed to improving the public’s oral and overall health. The white paper, which is being distributed with the support of Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc., makers of LISTERINE®, details how the outcomes from the September 2013 “Transforming Dental Hygiene Education, Proud Past, Unlimited Future” symposium helped shape the vision for the future of the dental hygiene profession — and how that vision is being brought to fruition through changes taking place both in the educational system, and in the larger framework of the overall health care system.

“This white paper highlights the vast transformation taking place in oral health and provides evidence that changes are needed to improve health outcomes for the public,” said ADHA President Jill Rethman, RDH, BA. “Today’s dental hygiene graduates must be prepared to collaborate in an increasingly interprofessional health care environment. This document illustrates the need for not only a transformed dental hygiene curriculum, but a transformed oral health care system that puts the patient first and optimizes the preventive and therapeutic services dental hygienists can provide.”

Issues related to the changes needed in dental hygiene education are explored throughout the white paper, and those issues highlight the importance of changing dental hygiene education and transforming the way graduates are prepared for the future. This paper discusses how by improving the curricula and supplying dental hygiene students with a broad-based, well-rounded education that challenges them to  think critically, future dental hygienists will be better equipped to serve the public’s overall health and wellness needs.

The public’s oral health care needs are becoming more diverse and more complex. The scientific evidence supporting the role of oral health care services in achieving and maintaining oral and overall health continues to evolve. These facts put dental hygiene educators on the front line, preparing the next generation of dental hygienists to enter a health care environment that is radically different from just a few years ago. According to ADHA Chief Executive Officer Ann Battrell, MSDH, “By developing and instituting a new educational curriculum, grounded in science and with an interprofessional focus on contemporary delivery strategies, we can go a long way to improving access to care for the public and advancing the dental hygiene profession.”

The document is intended to facilitate dialogue among a variety of interested stakeholder groups and continue to look for ways to advance dental hygiene curriculum for the benefit of the public.

“The American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s innovative research agenda, commitment to transforming the dental hygienist profession and positively impacting public health care aligns with the LISTERINE® brand’s dedication to oral care,” said Larry Page, Director of U.S. Marketing for the LISTERINE® Brand, “We’re proud to support the evolution of dental hygiene education. This work reflects the important need to prepare students for the increasing demands of a dental hygienist.”

The white paper is being distributed in conjunction with the ADHA’s Access magazine, which readers will begin receiving on Sept. 24, 2015. For more information about the ADHA’s “Transforming Dental Hygiene Education and the Profession for the 21st Century” white paper, or to find out how you may receive a digital copy of the document, please contact ADHA director of communications John Iwanski at johni@adha.net or by calling 312/440-8900.

The Joint Commission Launches Free Educational Campaign on Use of Antibiotics

Posted on Monday, September 21, 2015

(OAKBROOK TERRACE, Illinois, Sept. 14, 2015) – The Joint Commission today launched its Speak Up™ on Antibioticscampaign to help educate the public on the appropriate and safe use of antibiotics, as well as the risks associated with antibiotic overuse. The campaign is the first in the Speak Up series to simultaneously introduce a complete package of free resources, including an infographic, podcast and video.

Each year, an estimated 2 million people in the United States become infected with bacteria that antibiotics cannot treat because the bacteria is no longer responsive to antibiotics. Antibiotics also can kill good bacteria in the body, potentially leading to other problems such as diarrhea or yeast infections. As a result, antibiotic overuse has become a critical health and patient safety concern, especially in young children and seniors, who are at higher risk for illness.

“Antibiotics are powerful drugs used to fight specific infections. However, they do not work for every illness, including viruses that cause colds and the flu,” said Lisa Waldowski, MS, APRN, CIC, infection control specialist, The Joint Commission. “The new Speak Up campaign provides a variety of resources to help patients and caregivers understand that how they use antibiotics today can affect how well the drugs work for them tomorrow.”

The Speak Up on Antibiotics campaign includes an infographic illustrating which illnesses may require an antibiotic, as well as a list of questions to ask when prescribed an antibiotic. The do’s and don’ts of antibiotic use are outlined, including taking them exactly as recommended and preventing infections by washing hands and getting vaccinated. The campaign also has an accompanying podcast and animated video. In the podcast, Waldowski discusses the most common misconceptions about how antibiotics work and how they should be prescribed, as well as why patients should care about antibiotic overuse. In the video, available in English and Spanish, patients are reminded that antibiotics are not needed for colds or the flu. The video encourages patients to follow the advice of their doctor on whether an antibiotic is really needed and how to appropriately take it.

Through efforts like the Speak Up on Antibiotics campaign, The Joint Commission is increasing its efforts to promote effective antibiotic use within health care facilities. In addition, The Joint Commission recently joined the White House Forum on Antibiotic Stewardship to begin reviewing and identifying where new standards may be needed to promote appropriate and safe antibiotic use.

The infographic, podcast, video and other resources are available for free download in one package. To learn more, please visit https://www.jointcommission.org/speakup.
