Posted on Saturday, January 8, 2022

Neocis, Inc., today announced that clinicians have placed more than 10,000 dental implants using the Yomi® dental robotic platform. Yomi gained FDA clearance for dental implant procedures in 2016 and for full-arch dental implant procedures in 2020.

“This milestone is a truly phenomenal accomplishment by our partner clinicians,” said Alon Mozes, CEO and co-founder. “The rapid growth and adoption of the Yomi platform shows the commitment dental professionals have to delivering the highest standard of care to their patients and Neocis is proud to be a partner in their practice success through Yomi.”

Yomi is the first and only FDA-cleared robot-assisted dental surgery system, according to Neocis, and provides assistance in both the planning (pre-operative) and the surgical (intra-operative) phases of dental implant surgery. The system provides clinicians the unique ability to accurately plan and place dental implants with physical, haptic guidance not available in other treatment options.

“Yomi has allowed me to deliver quality treatment with unsurpassed levels of accuracy and precision,” said New York oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Yomi user, Jay Neugarten, DDS, MD, FACS. “As great as this technology is today, I can't wait to see what the future holds for Yomi. It's a true game-changer for dental surgery.”

Neocis states that it aims to grow the Yomi robotic platform to extend beyond dental implant placement and provide dental clinicians with a more comprehensive partnership that offers their patients and practice a truly remarkable experience.

The EdgePRO system offers a more effective, innovative cleaning and disinfection technology for the endodontic community

BIOLASE, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOL), the global leader in dental lasers, and EdgeEndo, a global leader in commercializing endodontic products, announced today the FDA 510(k) clearance of the EdgePRO system for endodontists seeking a more effective cleaning and disinfection alternative within root canal procedures. The new laser-assisted microfluidic irrigation device offers an advanced solution to current cleaning and disinfection techniques, without disrupting procedure workflow or adding substantial cost on a per-procedure basis.

The EdgePRO Laser-Assisted Microfluidic Irrigation device is built upon BIOLASE's patented and proven platform, Er,Cr:YSGG 2780 nm wavelength laser technology, that has been shown to provide outstanding debridement1, cleaning, and disinfection by removing infected tissue, biofilms10,11, smear layer5-9, and killing up to 99% of bacteria commonly found in the root canal2-4, through the combination of advanced laser light-sound technology with traditional irrigation solutions.

BIOLASE will manufacture the EdgePRO system, consumable procedure tips, and accompanying accessories for EdgeEndo, which will capitalize on their unique ability to commercialize high-quality, innovative products within the endodontic specialty. EdgeEndo will commence selling the EdgePRO system and related products immediately within the U.S. and will work closely with BIOLASE to ensure the needs of the endodontic community are satisfied with this enabling technology platform.

"This clearance enables endodontists to access state-of-the-art technology that has the potential to improve clinical outcomes and patient experiences. We remain committed to offering products and solutions that may enhance specialist skills in providing the highest quality of care for their patients while producing streamlined efficiencies for practices in a cost-effective manner," said Dr. Charles Goodis, DDS, EdgeEndo founder, and CEO. "We are proud to partner with BIOLASE, in our combined effort to service and support the specialty with innovative and effective technologies that may elevate the quality of dental care."

"We're very pleased to complete our first OEM project, receive FDA 510(k) clearance, and deliver EdgePro units to EdgeEndo in only 12 months," adds BIOLASE President and CEO John Beaver. "This achievement is an excellent example of cross-functional teamwork between our two market-leading companies, and we look forward to our long and valuable relationship ahead."

Oral Health Pandemic Response Workgroup Urges Federal Prioritization of Oral Health

Posted on Wednesday, January 5, 2022

Group Asks to Convene Stakeholders and Develop Action Plan to Promote Health Equity and Access

The Oral Health Pandemic Response Workgroup, a group of executives from across the dental landscape convened by CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, is urging health officials at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to prioritize oral health equity and access at the federal level.

The group sent letters to Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral (ADM) Rachel L. Levine, MD, and the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Micky Tripathi, PhD, MPP, asking to convene stakeholders and develop an action plan to promote equitable oral health policies and programs in its work.

The pandemic has shown that oral health inequities in our nation are profound. Access to oral health care remains out of reach for many low-income families and individuals, individuals with disabilities, communities of color, Tribal communities, and many rural communities.

A growing body of evidence also demonstrates that poor oral health can contribute to significant complications in systemic disease, such as diabetes and heart disease. In addition, studies have demonstrated that poor oral health contributes to increased overall medical costs.

“Oral health is essential health care, but across our country, people continue to experience deep disparities in access to services and health outcomes,” said Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA, president and CEO at CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. “As leaders from the health care industry, we are urging top federal health officials to prioritize oral health and we stand ready to collaborate on those efforts.”

In the letter to ADM Levine, the Oral Health Pandemic Response Workgroup calls for promoting oral health in the broader administrative, policymaking, legislative, and regulatory activities of HHS and the Biden Administration, including organizing an oral health summit or similar opportunity to get input from the oral health community on all health policy commissions, task forces, and health-related meetings hosted by the Administration.

In its letter to Dr. Tripathi, the group identifies the lack of medical-dental integration as a major barrier to oral health equity. Currently, data exchange between medical and dental providers is limited. Many dental practices are not yet using electronic dental records (EDR). Those that are using EDRs often encounter challenges with the lack of integration with other platforms, preventing streamlined communication between health care providers.

The letter goes on to ask for Dr. Tripathi to convene key stakeholders across medicine, dentistry, health information technology, and federal and state entities to explore opportunities to improve the nation’s oral health and overall health by ensuring that providers have the information they need to provide patient-centered, comprehensive, and integrated medical and dental care.

“Now is the time to bring Government officials and the health care community together to promote a more equitable health system that includes oral health,” said Cheryl Lee, DDS, president of the National Dental Association. “Our members look forward to working closely with HHS officials and key stakeholders to make oral health a priority across the board.”

The Oral Health Pandemic Response Workgroup looks forward to bringing oral health stakeholders to the table and working with ADM Levine and Dr. Tripathi to develop a plan of action for this important work.

With its mission to enable better oral health for all, it is also bringing the revolutionary Oral-B iO™ lineup to more people with the addition of iO4 and iO5 brushes, as well as reimagining “Attack of the Cavity Creeps” as a fun, educational video game.

“Our mission does not end at a smart toothbrush or better brushing coach; it is about developing a larger digital health ecosystem that leads with advanced technologies, accessible solutions and more effective educational tools to improve oral care and health for all,” said Alita Vegas, P&G Global Oral Care Senior Vice President. “With our latest announcements at CES 2022, we’re building a digital health ecosystem to take on the oral health crisis in America. Oral-B is committed to helping people across the globe access the very best in oral care technology while teaching them about the dangers of tooth decay and encouraging healthy oral care habits.”

“Furthermore, we are expanding the iO line-up to include iO4 and iO5, providing accessibility to more people. In addition, I’m excited to announce the launch of Oral-B iO9 later this year in Latin America, allowing us to reach more global consumers than ever before,” Vegas concluded. “This game-changing, rechargeable toothbrush brought consumers the ability to have a professional clean feel in just 2 minutes, and received the ADA seal of acceptance, recognized by dentists and consumers as the gold standard for evaluating the safety and efficacy of dental products.”

Oral-B iO Technology

Originally launched in 2020, Oral-B iO was the result of six years of dedicated research with dental professionals to ensure people have the best possible oral health outcomes at home. Oral-B iO strikes the right balance between effectiveness and experience and reimagines how a brush performs. It offers a unique blend of innovative features, such as a linear magnetic drive, bi-modal smart pressure sensor, and redesigned brush head, to deliver the WOW of a professional clean feel at home.

In clinical tests, Oral-B iO provided a deeper cleaning of teeth and gums, allowing users to easily and effectively maintain oral health. When compared to manual toothbrushes, Oral-B iO users experienced:

● 100 percent healthier gums in just one week

● 6 times more plaque removal along the gumline

● 3 times greater reduction in bleeding gums

● 83% of gingivitis patients moved from unhealthy to healthy gums in eight weeks

● 14.5 times higher odds of achieving healthy gums

And, when used with the right oral care products such as Crest Gum Detoxify toothpaste, Crest Pro-Health mouthwash, and Oral-B Glide floss, the results are even better with 100% of regimen users resolving their gingivitis and achieving healthy gums in 12 weeks (vs. just 7% of manual users).

Introducing Oral-B iO10 with iOSense

Built on Oral-B’s award-winning iO technology and a CES 2022 Innovation Awards honoree, the new iO10 with iOSense technology is the ultimate oral health coach. The iO5 can also provide users with real-time coverage tracking and coaching via the Oral-B app.

The iO4 and iO5 will be available nationwide beginning in 2022. Priced for less than $100 USD, both brushes will be offered in a range of colors including quite white, matte black, blush pink, icy blue and lavender.

Greater Access to Professional Dental Care

Oral-B is partnering with Grin, a leading teledentistry platform, that allows consumers to capture high-res images of their mouth on their smartphone, and securely transmit dental scans to their provider for an at-home consultation. Together, Oral-B and Grin hope to transform at-home oral health by giving consumers access to personalized oral health insights and at-home professional consultations.

The field of orthodontics is a great example: For many consumers, teeth straightening under the care of a local orthodontist is inaccessible—either due to distance from an office or the time commitment. The Grin platform consists of a scope that affixes to any smartphone and allows orthodontists to transition patient check-ins from in-office to remote, including monitoring teeth movement, gum health, and oral hygiene. With the Oral-B and Grin partnership, now orthodontists can virtually recommend the oral care products and behaviors their patients need to maintain good oral health treatment. This is especially important for kids, where early identification and remediation of poor oral hygiene can prevent longer treatment duration and extra office visits.

Oral-B and Grin believe that when consumers have a superior understanding of their oral health, they can take action early by selecting the right products, modifying behavior, and having more frequent, informed conversations with their dentist. Over the coming months, Oral-B and Grin will begin to reveal innovation that empowers consumers and their families to take greater control of their oral health at home.

You can find more information on Grin at get-grin.com.

Attack of the Cavity Creeps

Oral care education is a crucial part of overall health, and children are particularly susceptible to tooth decay. In fact, having cavities at an early age makes you four times more likely to have dental issues as an adult. Knowing this, Oral-B and Crest have developed an immersive video game —“Attack of the Cavity Creeps” — based on the fondly remembered ad campaign from the late 70’s and early 80’s that teaches kids better oral health habits. Being displayed at CES for the very first time, players will drop into the middle of Toothopolis and complete missions to combat bad breath, discoloration, early signs of gum disease, enamel erosion and defeat General Decay.

“Attack of the Cavity Creeps” will also be rolled out to kids and families as a part of Crest and Oral-B’s commitment to “Closing the Smile Gap” through dental care access, education and oral care donations. Play at www.pglifelab.com.
