Delta Dental launches nationwide effort to advance patient-centered care

Posted on Wednesday, May 19, 2021

Today, Delta Dental Plans Association announced the nationwide deployment of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Dental Plan Survey by its member companies covering all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico in 2021.

"Our mission is to advance the oral health of all Americans, and we are proud that we will be the first commercial health insurer to deploy the CAHPS Dental Plan Survey nationally," said James W. Hutchison, President & CEO, Delta Dental Plans Association. "The insights gathered from the CAHPS Dental Plan Survey will better position us to advance patient-centered care and understand patients' oral health journeys from purchasing a dental plan to visiting the dentist's office."

The CAHPS Dental Plan Survey is an anonymous standardized questionnaire that asks adult patients about their oral healthcare experiences. The questions asked within the survey are designed to provide a view into the overall patient experience and satisfaction from every aspect of their oral healthcare interactions. This includes questions relating to their dental plan and the care and services received from their dental office.

"The aggregated CAHPS survey results will provide Delta Dental's network of dentists with keen insights into patients' experiences, enabling the enhancement of the doctor-patient bond in meaningful, metrics-driven ways," said Joseph Dill, DDS, MBA, Vice President of Dental Science, Delta Dental Plans Association.

The survey is a validated patient experience survey tool developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Inaugurated in 1995, the CAHPS survey is used by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and Veterans Affairs. The CAHPS Dental Plan Survey was first administered in 2006 by the U.S. military for the TriCare dental services program. Delta Dental will be the first commercial health insurer to deploy the CAHPS Dental Plan Survey nationally to advance the patient-centered approach to delivering oral healthcare.

Sterngold Partners with AIDL to Provide a CE-Credited, No Cost, Digital Denture Course

Posted on Tuesday, May 18, 2021

The Association of Indiana Dental Laboratories (AIDL) and associate member Sterngold Dental have come together to offer members a CE-credited, no-charge course on “Bridging the Gap with Digital Dentures: Making the Clear Choice.” This one-hour live, virtual program is hosted by Sterngold Dental and delivered by Gene Peterson, CDT, Sterngold’s Director of Technical Development and Learning—and one of the industry’s known subject matter experts on digital dentures. The course carries a scientific credit for attendees.

The objective of the course is to help dental laboratory technicians and dental laboratory owners make simple sense of all the available information on digital dentures. In an effort to inform, there is an inadvertent excess of information available in the community today. While well meaning, it can be overwhelming for busy dental technicians and makes it tougher to clearly appreciate just how the technology can benefit operations and growth. Further, the revolution and rapidly evolving subject of digital dentures has many asking: “Where do I start?” “Which digital denture system is the best for me?”

In “Bridging the Gap with Digital Dentures: Making the Clear Choice,” Gene Peterson has created a syllabus that covers a brief summary of the evolution of digital dentures, the software and technologies involved, and insights on how to make the best choice based on your dental laboratory’s current state. For more information, visit the registration page.

This project was made possible through collaboration with AIDL’s President, Nicole Kern-Zimmerman, CDT, TE, and Executive Director, Patricia Crampton. Says Kern-Zimmerman: “Our partnership with Sterngold has been longstanding and helps sustain AIDL. We are fortunate to have an ongoing relationship with a company that values education, values its customers, and provides quality products to the dental lab industry. 'Bridging the Gap with Digital Dentures' not only meets our mission statement of promoting professionalism and education, but also offers an opportunity to provide another member benefit. Our organization understands that the digital product lineup is growing. Information and experience that we can help to provide our membership is valuable and applicable to all components of our mission. Considering the restrictions related to Covid-19, this webinar is the ideal format for the AIDL membership.”

On its part, Sterngold is privileged to have an opportunity to serve AIDL members with quality products and education. Gene Peterson, CDT, has been on a mission to help develop further learning through subject matter expertise and actionable insights.

If you would like Sterngold Dental to deliver a free CE course to your dental association, please reach out to info@sterngold.com.

Board-Certified Oral Surgeon Launches All-in-one Toothbrush and Tongue Cleaner

Posted on Tuesday, May 18, 2021

New oral care company Bao Tea has launched the first-ever All-in-One Toothbrush and Tongue Cleaner, the only oral hygiene tool of its kind on the market.

After witnessing an increasing trend focused more on white teeth than a healthy mouth, Southern California-based, board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Bao-Thy Grant founded the company to deliver easy-to-use products that intuitively remind users daily that brushing well matters, your tongue matters, and your health matters.

The BPA-free All-in-One Toothbrush and Tongue Cleaner is a toothbrush with ultra-soft nylon bristles on one end with the four-tiered tongue cleaner on the other. To attack bad breath and odor-causing bacteria at the source, the tongue cleaner is designed to brush and scrape debris present on the two surfaces of the tongue.

Designed to avoid unnecessary bacteria, Bao Tea also launched a hygienic holder, the Universal Manual Toothbrush Holder, to protect, secure, and elevate any manual toothbrush by using the holder’s suction-grip cups to allow the toothbrush to hang on a mirror, in a drawer, a medicine cabinet, or the shower while at home or traveling.

“Because research links a healthy mouth with our overall health, my mission is to help people stop undervaluing their oral hygiene and realize it is a key part of our general health and well-being,” says Dr. Grant. “The tongue is an integral but often overlooked part of oral care and your health. I am passionate about helping people change their daily routine by adding a tongue cleaner to everyday brushing.”

The All-in-One Toothbrush and Tongue Cleaner ($14.95) and Universal Manual Toothbrush Holder ($8.95) are available at www.baotea.com and on Amazon. The Bao Tea All-in-One Toothbrush and Tongue Cleaner has been recognized with an ADA Seal of Acceptance. The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs’ Acceptance of the Bao Tea All-in-One Toothbrush and Tongue Cleaner is based on its finding that the product is safe and has shown efficacy in removing plaque and helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis, when used as directed.

“Dentistry is often left out of health policy conversations, which neglects the fundamental relationship between oral health and overall health,” said Richard Valachovic, director of the NYU Dentistry Center for Oral Health Policy and Management and president emeritus of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). “The PROHmotion Symposium will bring thought leaders to the virtual table in the first of many public dialogues convened by the Center about evidence-based oral health policy and management.”

Posted on Monday, May 17, 2021

With 15,000 employees in locations around the world, diversity at Dentsply Sirona is a vibrant part of the company’s DNA. With this year’s Diversity Week, the company underlines its commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I) across all levels of the organization. The activities will celebrate the diverse aspects that define employees as individuals within the larger Dentsply Sirona family. As an example, one of the activities will be a podcast series in which employees will speak about their personal experiences and journey. Employees are invited to join discussions and talk about diversity and inclusion with colleagues and with members of our leadership team. A virtual cookbook visualizes the diversity of Dentsply Sirona employees by presenting dishes enjoyed by employees globally. Employees are invited to share their favourite recipes—to cook, experience, and get to know the stories of their colleagues.

Taking action for a brighter world

D&I is part of Dentsply Sirona’s commitment to taking action for a brighter world and ensuring a sustainable business framework. Dan Key, Senior Vice President, Chief Supply Chain Officer, and Diversity & Inclusion Council Leader at Dentsply Sirona, says: “The respect that we show toward individuals reflects our values as a company. Our employees are the heart of our business and the source of our greatest strength. Their commitment and their diverse backgrounds and perspectives enable us to develop innovative solutions that drive dentistry forward. To encourage that strength, we must ensure that employees feel inspired and empowered to achieve their full potential by bringing their whole selves to work every day.”

Dentsply Sirona is constantly seeking ways to foster an inclusive culture and diverse workforce. “Diversity, equal opportunities and inclusion pave the way for the future success of Dentsply Sirona as a global innovator in the dental market. We believe that diversity and inclusion is a competitive advantage and bringing people from diverse backgrounds together as a team benefits all of us. According to a study by McKinsey, companies with an ethnically and culturally diverse board of directors increase the probability for higher profits by 43 percent.* At Dentsply Sirona, half of the Board of Directors is gender or ethnically diverse demonstrating our commitment to lead by example”, emphasizes Lisa Yankie, Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer and Communications, and Co-Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Council at Dentsply Sirona.

D&I Council and Employee Resource Groups established

Dentsply Sirona established a global Diversity & Inclusion Council to develop organizational awareness through training, career coaching, networking, ongoing communications, and talent development to ensure all employees feel empowered to do their best work. The D&I Council comprises 14 demographically and functionally diverse employees from around the globe. The council evaluates current policies and processes to intentionally increase the awareness and impact of D&I priorities as well as increasing leaders’ ability to discuss and be held accountable for driving sustainable diversity, inclusion and equity outcomes.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) drive the momentum of D&I even further. As global networks, the ERGs are open to all employees with similar personal backgrounds and interests and foster conversations about diversity and inclusion. Melanie Jenkins, Senior Global Manager, Diversity & Inclusion and Early Career Programs at Dentsply Sirona explains: “The ERGs are a cornerstone of our Diversity & Inclusion Strategy at Dentsply Sirona. Groups like Black Organization for Leadership & Development (BOLD) or DS Women help strengthen diversity and the promotion of underrepresented groups by empowering, connecting and fostering employees to support them in their personal and professional development.” Currently, nearly 1,000 employees actively participate in Employee Resource Groups around the world and it’s growing every day. More ERGs will be launched in the next months, starting with PRIDE, promoting an open, inclusive, and respectful work environment for LGBTQ+ and allies, DS Early Career, providing support and networking opportunities for employees in the early stages of their career, Veterans, connecting active-duty service members and vets to support the transition to a civilian work environment and foster professional development, and APAG, the Asian Pacific American Group, focussed to provide support and resources for professional and personal development of Asian Pacific employees.
