NYU Dentistry to Host Oral Health Policy and Research Symposium–June 11

Posted on Monday, May 17, 2021

The NYU Dentistry Center for Oral Health Policy and Management will host the PROHmotion Symposium—Policy & Research in Oral Health: Moving Forward—on Friday, June 11, 2021 from 10 am to 3 pm ET. The virtual event will bring together experts in health policy, education, research, leadership, and advocacy to discuss how these fields intersect and to explore actions to advance dentistry’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities for the overall well-being of the public.

“Dentistry is often left out of health policy conversations, which neglects the fundamental relationship between oral health and overall health,” said Richard Valachovic, director of the NYU Dentistry Center for Oral Health Policy and Management and president emeritus of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). “The PROHmotion Symposium will bring thought leaders to the virtual table in the first of many public dialogues convened by the Center about evidence-based oral health policy and management.”

The event’s keynote speakers are Rena D’Souza, director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), part of the National Institutes of Health, and Cheryl Healton, dean of the NYU School of Global Public Health.

Panel discussions will focus on the COVID-19 pandemic and the future of dentistry, developing a national agenda for oral health policy, leadership challenges in the field, and global collaboration to improve access to dental care.

“The COVID-19 pandemic provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to think deeply about our healthcare system, what kinds of leaders it needs, and how to pursue policies that increase access to care,” said Michael P. O’Connor, co-director of the NYU Dentistry Center for Oral Health Policy and Management and executive vice dean at NYU Dentistry.

The event is open to the public with registration. For a complete schedule of the event and to register, please visit dental.nyu.edu/research/cohpm/prohmotion. A link to the Zoom webinar will be provided after registration. Reporters interested in attending should contact rachel.harrison@nyu.edu.

Note on Accessibility: This virtual event requires an internet connection and computer or smartphone. Audio will be closed captioned. For questions or to notify us of additional accommodation requests, please email: dental.web@nyu.edu by May 28, 2021.
