Aspen Dental Management to Acquire ClearChoice Management Services

Posted on Monday, November 16, 2020

Today Aspen Dental Management (ADMI) announced it has reached an agreement with Sun Capital Partners, Inc. to acquire ClearChoice Management Services (CCMS), which provides comprehensive practice support services to the nationwide network of ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers. With a current footprint of more than 60 locations, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers are leaders in fixed, full arch dental restorations for patients with missing or failing dentition.

As one of the largest and fastest-growing healthcare support organizations in the US, ADMI has helped reshape the dental landscape over the past 22 years, supporting the Aspen Dental brand as it has grown into the largest branded network of dental practices in the world. Today Aspen Dental stands at more than 850 locations in 42 states, with a new office opening every four days.

The consistent growth of both Aspen Dental and ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers is reflective of the broad transformation that is happening across the healthcare industry as consumers continue to demand more convenience and better access.

"We’re incredibly excited about bringing together two brands that have a shared commitment to not only delivering dental care that helps restore patients to full function and health, but also creating positive, and often life-changing, patient experiences," said Bob Fontana, chairman and CEO of ADMI. "Today’s news is an important reminder of ADMI’s ability to quickly adapt to shifting market and demographic trends to support dentists as they provide patients with increased access to quality oral health care."

A Growing Segment

Implants are the standard of care for tooth replacement and a key growth area across the dental industry:

  • -  An estimated 36 million Americas are missing more than 14 teeth.

  • -  Implant-retained fixed, full-arch dental restorations have grown 8% annually since 2016

  • -  ClearChoice's growth has outpaced other places with an annual growth rate of over 20% and more than 100,000 smiles restored since its inception in 2005.

ClearChoice has built a network of dental implant centers led by prosthodontists and oral surgeons highly trained in dental implants who strive to deliver best-in-class patient experiences. ClearChoice and Aspen Dental are highly complementary organizations, each serving patients with end-stage periodontal disease, which is associated with a variety of health conditions including edentulism.

"We are excited to be joining forces with ADMI, as the partnership will provide us additional resources, infrastructure, and know-how to more efficiently support the ClearChoice centers and position the network for continued growth and success," said Kevin Mosher, CEO of CCMS.

The two organizations will focus on collaboration in areas where it will enhance patient care and the patient experience, as well as drive value for Aspen Dental and ClearChoice practices and practice owners.

"As a support organization, ADMI continues to build and strengthen the infrastructure, expertise, and core competencies that successful consumer healthcare brands need to accelerate their growth and fuel their success, while also giving providers the freedom to do what they do best: care for their patients," Fontana added.

Subject to regulatory and other customary closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2020.

Cracked Teeth – Is COVID to Blame?

Posted on Friday, November 13, 2020

It’s all over the news. COVID-19 is causing cracked teeth. It's not the virus itself, but stress related to the virus, working and going to school remotely, social distancing, and everything that goes with it. No doubt the political climate is somewhere in that mix, too.

Pandemic stress, quarantine fatigue, mask burnout, online overload—whatever you want to call it, it’s an additional stress that people across the globe are experiencing. Stress comes out in many different ways, and each person responds differently, but we’re definitely seeing a trend of stress-related issues in dentistry.

How COVID Has Affected Dentistry

The aftereffects of dental office closures early in the pandemic combined with the stress-related conditions are now hitting the industry in some unexpected ways. According to American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) member and past president, Nicholas Davis, DDS, FAACD, of Newport Beach, California, “Dental stress has manifested itself in the increase of bruxism and clenching. As a result, I have noticed an increase in fractured teeth, broken restorations, TMD issues, headaches, and neck and shoulder problems. Almost on a daily basis, I am seeing patients with some sort of stress related tooth, joint, or muscle issue.”

But it’s not just cracked teeth bringing people into the dentist’s office. AACD member, Jeff Lineberry, DDS, AAACD, of Mooresville, North Carolina, says he’s also concerned about his patients’ gums. “We’re definitely seeing an increase in people with gum conditions getting worse along with an increase in decay rates. The combination of not coming into the office due to the pandemic, poor eating habits, and frequent mouth breathing due to masks adds to the negative impacts of stress on the body.

Related Dental Concerns

The overarching theme from AACD dentists is that treating the stress is a primary concern. Whether you practice mindfulness, begin a yoga habit, or seek professional medical help, addressing the feelings you’re having now is as important as treating the symptoms they are causing.

Salvatore Lotardo, DDS, AAACD, of New York and President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) echoes this sentiment: “The key to any treatment plan is understanding the cause of the current condition. This allows you to arrive at the correct diagnosis and develop a treatment plan that will have a predictable, long-term, successful outcome. So, on the surface, treatment of a cracked tooth may seem simple; restore the crack with a crown or other appropriate restoration and that is it. However, if the underlying cause has not been addressed, your treatment is susceptible to failure.”

Preventing Stress from Causing Dental Problems

AACD member dentists are not just interested in giving you a crown and sending you on your way. The bigger picture includes preventing problems in the first place by managing stress.

Dr. Lotardo stresses how important early intervention is. “If you have pain when chewing, muscle or jaw joint pain, or worn or loose teeth, be sure to see your dentist as soon as possible. Left untreated, patients can have long-term consequences that may result in more cracked teeth and potential loss of teeth.”

IDS Unveils New App for Safe Experience

Posted on Friday, November 13, 2020

Koelnmesse and Samsung SDS iannounced the launch of the eGuard app, a new product for trade fairs that will allow the International Dental Show (IDS) 2021 to provide exhibitors and visitors a safe experience despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The companies have jointly developed an indoor positioning system (IPS), which monitors the number of people and the behavior of the visitors in the exhibition halls and makes these cognitions available to the trade fair participants in real-time. The eGuard app is part of an extensive package of measures that ensure the highest degree of professional safety and create an environment in which encounters and business can grow again - and which is individually adapted to meet the needs of Koelnmesse. A combination between a geomagnetic field and beacons are implemented. No personal data is recorded.

The anonymous data collected by the IPS will allow the flow of visitors, visitor frequencies, the length of the stay and other position data to be recorded and will, for instance, display the visitor frequency in the individual halls to the trade visitor via the app. The relation between the respective hall sizes and the number of people present is determined and color-coded in the app. Furthermore, the individual location of the user is dynamically displayed. On this basis every customer can individually adapt his trade fair visit and if necessary avoid exhibition halls with a high frequency of visitors and visit them at a later point in time when it is quieter. eGuard enables Koelnmesse to implement measures to avoid or disperse larger gatherings of people.

So that the app can provide precise information about the visitor traffic at the event location, its usage is obligatory for all people for the entire duration of their stay at the fair grounds and must be kept active in the background of the smartphone.

The successful strategic collaboration between Koelnmesse and Samsung SDS has existed since March 2018. Koelnmesse is the exclusive partner of the globally operating provider of software solutions and IT services for the development of trade fair-relevant systems. Their first joint project, Digital Signage, an interactive routing system at the fair grounds, was launched for gamescom 2018. The system enables real-time orientation and information management and creates attractive presentation options in high-end quality.

NYU College of Dentistry Opens Practice in Downtown Brooklyn

Posted on Thursday, November 12, 2020

NYU College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry) has opened a new dental care practice in Downtown Brooklyn’s City Point. The practice brings high quality, low-cost dental care for adults and children to the Brooklyn community and its surrounding area, and provides a unique training opportunity for advanced dental students at NYU.

”NYU Dentistry Brooklyn Patient Care marks the first time in the 155-year history of NYU College of Dentistry that we have opened a patient care and education facility outside of Manhattan,” said Charles N. Bertolami, the Herman Robert Fox Dean of NYU Dentistry. “However, we see it as an extension of our long-standing commitment to caring for Brooklyn residents, especially those who otherwise would not be able to access dental care.”

Bringing Care to Brooklyn

NYU Dentistry Brooklyn Patient Care provides comprehensive patient care, including general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and implant dentistry. The practice—which will see 25,000 to 30,000 patients each year—is staffed by NYU Dentistry faculty and, going forward, will include advanced dental students.

Like NYU Dentistry’s main facility at 345 E. 24th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan, which cares for roughly 75,000 New Yorkers per year, NYU Dentistry Brooklyn Patient Care offers services at reduced cost and accepts Medicaid.

The practice is located in a 15,000-square-foot leased space in City Point, a mixed-use commercial and residential complex in Downtown Brooklyn. City Point is in close proximity to 12 subway lines and 5 bus stops, making it easily accessible to residents throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island.

"When I visited the NYU College of Dentistry Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities last year, I was struck by their commitment to serving patients who often lack access to these vital services. The new facility at City Point will extend and deepen that mission, providing much-needed dental services to Brooklynites. The events of this year have underscored the profound need for equitable access to all forms of health care, and the urgent task of closing the vast disparities that currently exist in that access. NYU College of Dentistry is pointing the way forward for all healthcare institutions, and I thank them for their pioneering example," said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

“I am thrilled that NYU is opening a new dental clinic right here in Brooklyn. Dental health is a social and economic justice issue, because too few people get the dental care that they need. This new practice will help address dental care access inequities by coupling students and faculty together to provide the public with high quality, low-cost care. NYU's new model teaching program will also create a group of well-trained dental professionals and ensure a better experience for patients," said New York State Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon.

NYU Dentistry’s new practice is one of several illustrations of NYU’s growing commitment to the Brooklyn community. Prior to establishing NYU Dentistry Brooklyn Patient Care, NYU dental faculty and students were already screening and providing health promotion services to more than 1,000 children, adults, and seniors annually at 30 community-based sites in Brooklyn, and treating approximately 700 children and seniors aboard the Smiling Faces, Going Places dental van at 14 Brooklyn sites.

In addition, over the past decade, NYU merged with Brooklyn’s Polytechnic University to create NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, partnered with Lutheran Medical Center to establish and expand NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, and transformed the former MTA headquarters at 370 Jay Street into an academic hub for technology, emerging media, and the arts that is also home to the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP).

A New Model of Dental Education

NYU Dentistry Brooklyn Patient Care will introduce an innovative “mentor-protégé” model of dental education that benefits patients, students, and faculty alike. In this model, a faculty member mentors a small group of advanced dental students, and faculty and students work side-by-side to treat patients, with faculty serving as hands-on, active teachers.

In June 2019, NYU Dentistry launched a four-month pilot program to test this model and found that it led to optimal learning, teaching, and patient care experiences. Students benefited from working so closely alongside faculty and getting real-time feedback, noting that this model provided an enhanced environment in which to build confidence and competence in their clinical skills.

An unexpected but welcome benefit of the mentor-protégé model pilot was increased efficiency, more similar to a private practice than a dental school clinic. Faculty and students were able to see at least three times as many patients as are typically seen in the dental school clinic, which translated to more efficient appointments and saving patients’ time.

Based on the successful pilot, NYU Dentistry Brooklyn Patient Care aims to introduce the mentor-protégé model by adding student rotations once the practice has acquired a patient roster sufficient to provide the rich educational experiences that align with the goals of the pilot program and the accrediting body. Students and faculty will work together in small groups of no more than three students to one faculty member to provide patient care. Importantly, the faculty member is designated as the patient’s dentist, creating continuity of care for patients as they return to the practice for future appointments.

“Through this model, we will empower students and faculty to work together as a true team, while helping students learn how to run a dental practice in a fast-paced, real-world environment,” said Bertolami.

Dentsply Sirona and Panthera Dental Announce Collaboration: Fully Digital Workflow for Custom-made Sleep Devices

Posted on Thursday, November 12, 2020

Dentsply Sirona's intraoral scanner Primescan, launched in 2019, enables high-precision digital impressions with outstanding imagery. Working with Primescan offers numerous advantages: it can be used for patient consultation, treatment planning in implant dentistry and orthodontics, and restorative treatments. With the collaboration between Dentsply Sirona and Panthera Dental, which was announced today, dentists can now use the precise scans in a validated workflow as a basis to create a custom-made Digital Sleep Apnea Device (D-SAD). The outstanding quality of the intraoral scan data delivers reliable data for the high-quality custom-made D-SAD Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD), indicated for people suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea and snoring.

Three steps to D-SAD: scan, send and treat

Thanks to Dentsply Sirona’s Primescan, a complete and accurate full-arch scan is possible in as little as a minute to give the dentist immediate control of a 3D model. The outstanding accuracy and reliable quality of Primescan delivers reliable data for the Panthera Dental D-SAD custom-made sleep device. This saves time and nearly eliminates the necessity for adjustments during patient visits.

The data transfer to Panthera Dental is fast and secure: for North America, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, the data will be transferred securely via the Dentsply Sirona Connect Case Center. For other Primescan and Panthera Dental countries, the data can be sent via STL to Panthera Dental through their user-friendly web portal (regulations per country and availability may vary). With one of the next software versions, there will be a full integration in the Connect Case Center for all Primescan and Panthera Dental-validated countries.

One advantage is that besides Primescan, no additional equipment is needed. After scanning the patient’s complete jaw and the bite registration for the protrusion, the scan data can be sent directly to Panthera Dental, either using the Connect Case Center or via STL file. Within 15 days, the D-SAD will be designed and manufactured by Panthera Dental’s proprietary CAD/CAM process in their 4.0 manufacturing plant using numerous digital, robotic, and automated technologies. It is then shipped back to the dental professional via multinational express delivery service. The dentist receives a custom-made sleep device and can start treatment immediately.

The individualized and fast result distinguishes the dental practice in its treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, and allows for happier, healthier patients with improved quality of life.

A fast and accurate solution for OSA and snoring

Physical and psychological problems that sleep apnea can cause should not be underestimated. If sleep is constantly disturbed, this can have serious effects on mental and physical health. Currently, three main treatment solutions are recommended by experts: lifestyle modifications (weight loss and exercise), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), and Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD). However, sleep masks (CPAP) have considerable compliance issues with 50% and 83% of patients being non-compliant after six months and five years respectively.2 Patient compliance of Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD) remains 86% after over three years of use3. Thanks to Panthera Dental’s D-SAD, patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and those who refuse or are noncompliant to Continuous Positive Airway Pressures (CPAP) therapy, have a comfortable and effective treatment option available.

Dr. Shouresh Charkhandeh, dentist and dental sleep medicine educator from Canada, says: "Over one billion people worldwide suffer from sleep-related breathing disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Many of them can benefit from Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT). We need to safely simplify OAT and make it predictable in order for many dentists to get involved in providing this life-saving treatment to patients. The validated digital workflow solution between Primescan and Panthera Dental, which combines Primescan’s impressive accuracy, efficiency, and ease of use with Panthera Dental’s precise and versatile manufacturing, enables dentists around the world to help many suffering patients live a longer, better, and healthier life and provide an alternative solution to CPAP therapy."

Panthera Dental’s D-SAD is made out of 100% medical-grade biocompatible type-12 polyamide nylon. This cutting-edge material is light, smooth, strong yet flexible, very durable, and resistant to bruxism. A wide range of plateaus and bands are available and allow for over 300 standard design combinations as well as maximized tongue space. Additional customization is possible, and the D-SAD can be adapted to every possible patient morphology, from basic to the most complex. It is a uniquely simple and easy-to-care-for dental appliance.

The D-SAD’s unique titration mechanism uses interchangeable rods made of the same biocompatible polymer as the device, designed to not elongate and to resist bruxism. The length of the rods varies from 16 to 34 mm and can be adjusted in 0.5-mm increments for an accurate and customized advancement. Moreover, they do not disengage during sleep thanks to a patented connection system, and they are easily replaced.

"We are fulfilling an explicit request from customers and providing added value for dentists working with Primescan," said Dr. Alexander Völcker, Group Vice President CAD/CAM at Dentsply Sirona. “The combination of Panthera Dental’s Digital Sleep Apnea Devices and Primescan is a great example of what can be achieved when a dental workflow starts with an intraoral scan. The digital technology integrates seamlessly into the daily workflow, enabling clinicians to provide a fast and accurate solution for sleep apnea and snoring."

Beatrice Robichaud, Co-Founder and VP Marketing & Customer Experience at Panthera Dental said: “Our collaboration with Dentsply Sirona is a natural fit that will synergize both our companies’ recent technological advancements in the field of CAD/CAM solutions. Dentists worldwide will benefit from the predictability of the validated Primescan workflow while delivering an accurate, completely customized Digital Sleep Apnea Device to their patients for greater patient satisfaction and quality of life.”

The Panthera D-SAD received FDA 510(k) clearance for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, has the CE mark, and complies with the Canadian Medical Devices Regulations.

More information about Primescan is available on the Dentsply Sirona Website: www.dentsplysirona.com/primescan

More information about Panthera Dental is available on the Panthera Dental website: https://pantheradental.com/d-sad/

The workflow is being expanded to other countries, but regulations may vary. New countries will be added shortly; announcements will be made in due time.

Zahn Dental Launches Zirlux Transitions

Posted on Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Zahn Dental, the U.S. dental laboratory business of Henry Schein, Inc., today announced the launch of Zirlux® Transitions, a transitional layered zirconia solution for dental laboratories to help manufacture highly esthetic and durable restorations.

Zirlux® Transitions features Smart Incisal™ Technology, which creates a blueish gray effect on the top third zone of the zirconia disc. This effect helps minimize the white hue of a restoration, while enhancing its blueish gray translucency to mimic the esthetics of natural teeth once milled and sintered. In addition to producing a blueish gray effect, this patented technology enables the material to produce a higher chroma, or brighter shade, in the cervical area (the surface above the junction of the crown of the tooth and the root of the tooth), and decreasing chroma, or darker shade, towards the incisal area (the surface of the tooth that faces the tongue).

“At Zahn, we are committed to delivering solutions dental laboratories can rely on to produce high quality, durable restorations that resemble natural teeth, helping to achieve life-like esthetics without compromising strength,” said Rita Acquafredda, President, Global Laboratory Business, Zahn Dental. “As we introduce the latest Zirlux® product to the marketplace, we are excited to offer customers a premium zirconia for both anterior and posterior restorations, manufactured here in the United States.”

In addition to its translucent features and ability to deliver life-like esthetics, the new Zirconia material features 1200 megapascal, or MPa (the mega unit used to measure the intensity of pressure or force per unit area), helping to ensure the stability of stress-bearing restorations. Zirlux® Transitions is available in 98.5mm discs and all 16 classic shades, as well as one bleach shade.

For more product information, call (800) 496-9500, or visit www.zirlux.com/transitions. Zirlux® Transitions will also be demonstrated during LMT LAB DAY Online. To register for the event and receive a demo, visit www.lmtmag.com/labdayonline.
