3D Predict Unveils Innovative AI-Driven Teeth Aligners in US

Posted on Friday, September 25, 2020

3D Predict™, the international software developer and manufacturer of innovative dental aligners based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, is launching in the US with a new headquarters in New York. The medical technology company has gained global recognition for its one-of-a-kind AI software, that produces highly precise 3D models of the smile including the crowns, bone and roots. These models are used to design dental aligners. 3D Predict aligners prevent tooth movements that are anatomically impossible resulting in 50% fewer teeth alignment corrections and a 30% reduction in treatment time. 3D Predict received FDA clearance in February.

“As a result of today’s COVID restrictions, currently more and more doctors are making their choice in favor of clear aligner therapy versus braces. Treatment using clear aligners requires less frequent and shorter consultations with less manual procedures, so it is safer and more convenient for doctors and patients in the current environment,” said Marina Domracheva, M.D., Founder and CEO of 3D Predict.

Orthodontics is nearly a $2 billion market in the US today, with five million patients starting orthodontic treatment every year. Approximately four million of those are complex and moderate cases. Unlike other aligners and braces, 3D Predict uses root and bone analysis for greater predictability to treatment. 3D Predict provides information to orthodontists about potential treatment obstacles, such as root collision, shows how roots will move during treatment which allows doctors to formulate a more predictable and safe treatment plan.

“The growing orthodontics market is driving an even greater demand for more effective treatment models,” added Domracheva. “We saw a way to combine clinical experience and cutting-edge technology to equip orthodontists with a dental device to treat even the most complex cases with greater precision and efficiency.”

3D Predict Aligners are designed on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology which boosts effectiveness, reduces the number of corrections by half and associated chair time by 30%. This allows doctors to increase their margin and save time for new patients.

“The application of technology in aligners equips doctors with a depth of information about the tooth that was previously not available,” says Dr. Maria Sokolina, DDS, who practices in NY and NJ, “3D Predict gives us meticulous detail using data that allows doctors to analyze the tooth as a whole yielding better outcomes for the patient.”

3D Predict’s™ proprietary software fuses data on patients' crowns, real roots and bone. The orthodontist is able to analyze the tooth as a whole, make a more effective treatment plan preventing at least five extra patient visits due to reduction in corrections.

CS 3700 Ranked First in Trueness in Latest In-Vitro Study

Posted on Wednesday, September 23, 2020

Scientific literature has shown intraoral scanners to be highly successful in creating digital impressions for designing short-span restorations and partial prosthesis; however, scanning fully edentulous arches is less studied. Now, a new comprehensive in-vitro study testing the trueness of 12 intraoral scanners when scanning full-arch implant impressions has found the CS 3700 intraoral scanner to offer the truest results when capturing scan bodies in an edentulous arch, giving doctors more confidence that they’re getting the best results when creating digital impressions with the CS 3700.

The study compared the trueness—or how closely the digital scans matched the actual object—of 12 intraoral scanners when scanning a stone model of an edentulous arch with scan bodies. Two methods were used to assess trueness. Method 1 directly evaluated the quality/accuracy of the scan of each intraoral scanner. Method 2 evaluated the resulting accuracy of each intraoral scanner in early stages of prosthetic CAD modeling.

Carestream Dental’s newest scanner, the CS 3700, was shown to have the best trueness, with a mean error 30.4 mm, when tested by Method 1. The study found the performance differences between the scanners tested to be statistically significant, with CS 3700 outperforming all the other 11 scanners.

“Being able to confidently scan a full edentulous arch is every scanner manufacturer’s goal,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “The CS 3700 features advanced acquisition software—CS ScanFlow—that ensures the accuracy of the dataset while making it 20 percent faster than the Carestream Dental CS 3600 intraoral scanner.”

Taking into consideration the results of both methods, the study ranked the CS 3700’s performance among the intraoral scanners with the highest accuracy, defined as having a mean error of <40 mm with Method 1 analysis and <25mm with Method 2 analysis. Carestream Dental’s CS 3600 intraoral scanner was also included in the study and was also listed among the scanners with the highest accuracy.

Both scanners are capable of high-speed scanning and include smart features like guide arrows that show users the ideal direction to scan. Users can choose from orthodontic, restorative and implant-borne restorative workflows. They can also capture different bite registrations for fabricating sleep devices.

FDI World Dental Federation and Smile Train

Posted on Wednesday, September 23, 2020

Cleft lip and palate (clefts) are the most common birth difference of the face and mouth and impact the development of the mouth, gums, and palate.

- Regular and focused dental care should be integrated into cleft care to help address oral hygiene challenges and prevent oral disease.

- FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) and Smile Train are releasing new Oral Health in Comprehensive Cleft Care guidelines to empower local cleft teams with training andresources to improve oral health

Around the world, a baby is born with a cleft about every three minutes. Many children with clefts have severe difficulties eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking. What's more, even after having cleft surgery, these children often have a higher risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues.

The diverse team of healthcare providers caring for a patient with a cleft have an important role to play in supporting that person's oral health and overall well-being. This is why oral health nonprofits FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) and Smile Train have joined forces with support from GSK Consumer Healthcare to launch guidelines for oral health professionals and the wider cleft care team to help reduce oral disease and improve oral health in people born with clefts. Through the release of these new guidelines, FDI and Smile Train hope to empower local cleft teams with training and resources to improve oral health and provide comprehensive oral healthcare. To learn more about the guidelines, providers are encouraged to join the FDI Oral Health Campus webinar on 29 September at 15:00 BST where they will be released for the first time. You can register for the webinar here.

In this webinar, the panel of FDI and Smile Train experts will present the Oral Health in Comprehensive Cleft Care guidelines, discuss the oral health challenges that people with treated or untreated clefts often face, and offer clear solutions to optimize patients' well-being, ensuring that they're able to eat, speak, breathe, and swallow.

Rehabilitation and care of children with clefts often involves the core specialties of nursing, plastic surgery, paediatric dentistry, speech therapy, and orthodontics. All members of this cleft care team can contribute to reinforcing the patient's oral health - ideally, by following a set of agreed and adopted protocols to ensure good interdisciplinary communication.

"Children with clefts suffer disproportionally from oral disease, which can not only affect their overall health and well-being, but also their long-term development," said FDI President Dr Gerhard K. Seeberger. "Ensuring that the cleft care team is trained to help prevent oral disease is so important. FDI is delighted to share these new guidelines, which we hope will empower the whole team to deliver consistent, quality care to all patients living with clefts."

"We aim to integrate oral health into the care pathway for children with clefts," said Smile Train President and CEO Susannah Schaefer. "Regular dental care for children with clefts is essential to help manage their increased risk for oral disease. It's important for healthcare providers and caregivers to recognize the signs of oral diseases and know how to prevent them. This is the only way to enable people with clefts to enjoy the highest possible quality of life."

"At GSK, we understand the importance of good oral health and hygiene for all, especially for those living with clefts," said GSK Global Category Lead Oral Health Jayant Singh. "Comprehensive cleft care is a key focus of the work we support with Smile Train and FDI. We are so excited about the release of these guidelines, which we think will serve as a transformative and indispensable tool for the entire cleft care team."

EQUIA® Restorative System: Outstanding Performance Confirmed By Several Long-Term Clinical Trials

Posted on Monday, September 21, 2020

Introduced in 2007, the EQUIA® restorative system quickly proved to be a new standard in restorative technology, offering esthetically pleasing bulk-fill posterior restorations and an advanced option to overcome the limitations of amalgam, composite and conventional glass ionomer restoratives. Over the years, EQUIA® has inspired a number of prominent research groups to evaluate its clinical performance in several short- and long-term trials.

Mounting Evidence For EQUIA®

A significant number of articles published in high-ranked journals brought in light the remarkable performance of EQUIA® in Class I and II restorations after two- and three-year follow-up periods (Friedl et al1; Klinke et al2; Olegario et al3; Fatidou et al4; Lopez et al5). Two additional studies (Turkun et al6 and Basso et al7) evaluated EQUIA® restorations after longer periods of six and seven years respectively, concluding about its reliability and durability for Class I, II and V restorations.

Other leading studies compared EQUIA® to conventional resin composites. For instance, Menezes Silva et al8 and Kupietzky et al9 demonstrated that EQUIA® had similar rates of success when compared to a composite resin in Class II restorations after three years.

After a 5-year trial, Molina et al10 revealed EQUIA®’s optimal performance when treating special care patients. EQUIA® also proved to be a trustworthy restorative option for noncarious cervical lesions after one and three years as described by Vaid et al11 and Celik et al12 respectively. A randomized controlled trial leaded by Heck et al13 showed, after a six-year follow-up, the satisfactory performance of EQUIA® to restore two- or three-surface class II restorations.

Finally, Gurgan et al14. conducted a notable 10-year clinical trial reporting an outstanding success rate of 100% for the EQUIA® restorative system in class I and II cavities. Glass Hybrid Materials: A New Era Of Performance Building on the extensive and positive clinical evidence of the EQUIA® restorative system, GC introduced EQUIA Forte®, the first glass hybrid, in 2015, and offering an unprecedented option for long-term restorations.

The interim results of clinical studies show the suitability of EQUIA Forte® as a longterm material to restore extended size Class II cavities.* Gurgan S. et al15 compared EQUIA Forte® to a micro-hybrid composite; concluding that, after four years, both materials presented optimal surface and marginal adaptation characteristics. The EQUIA Forte® multicenter study (Miletic I. et al16) compares the glass-hybrid to a nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram, Ivoclar Vivadent) and the two-year interim results have shown similar clinical performance for both materials.

Backed by years of extensive research and academically reviewed publications, this literature review provides clinicians with the unwavering confidence in glass hybrid restorative systems as an optimal long-term restorative alternative.

The latest Glass hybrid, EQUIA Forte® HT, offers increased esthetics and strength compared to its predecessor, EQUIA Forte®; confirming that glass-hybrids are a trustworthy long-term restorative option for the dentist, while still being cost effective for patients.
