Digital Dentistry Curriculum to Be Showcased at the 2019 International Dental Show

Posted on Friday, March 8, 2019

The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) will present the new Digital Dentistry Curriculum on March 13 at the 2019 International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne, Germany. This pioneering educational resource will be available at no cost to dental schools around the world.

“Dental schools throughout North America have had great success implementing the Digital Dentistry Curriculum and we are excited to make this resource available to all dental schools across the globe,” said President of the ACP Nadim Z. Baba, DMD, MSD, FACP. “Patients around the world will benefit from the improved communication, comfort, and quality of oral health care that practitioners acquire from this curriculum.”

The Digital Dentistry Curriculum prepares dental students and specialty residents to use advanced digital technology in patient care, throughout diagnosis, assessment, and treatment. Currently available to 90 percent of dental schools in the United States and Canada, the curriculum gives educators the resources needed to deliver a dental education focused on emerging digital technologies. It was developed by a task force of prosthodontic educators, with input from dozens of institutions and individuals. It is supported by “Fundamentals of CAD/CAM Dentistry,” an e-book for Apple Books and Amazon Kindle.

Interested parties may RSVP to digitalcurriculum@prosthodontics.org for a presentation of the Digital Dentistry Curriculum on Wednesday, March 13, at 2 p.m. It will be held in the Congress Saal, Room/Hall 1 on the 4th floor.

Attendees will learn about the contents of the curriculum, how to gain access, and support available to educators from the ACP and ACP Education Foundation. Faculty members from Rutgers and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), will report on their experiences at pilot schools that have successfully implemented the curriculum. The curriculum was created with support from Henry Schein, including its implant businesses, BioHorizons and CAMLOG, and its supplier partners, 3Shape, Glidewell Laboratories, and Planmeca.

NEW Pronamel® Intensive Enamel Repair Toothpaste Reveals New Innovation in the Pronamel Range

Posted on Wednesday, March 6, 2019

GSK Consumer Healthcare today announced an innovation for Pronamel® with the launch of NEW Pronamel® Intensive Enamel Repair toothpaste, designed to help actively repair acid-weakened enamel and protect teeth from future effects of acid erosion with twice daily brushing.

In a recent study of 2,000 Americans conducted by Pronamel in partnership with OnePoll, the results revealed that oral health is one of the American population's top priorities, but few understand the key role enamel plays in the overall health and wellness of teeth:

-83% ranked oral health as an important health priority, followed by mental health (78%) and exercise (74%)

-36% ranked oral health as one of the most significant elements in their life, followed by relationships (30%) and careers (21%)

-67% found their teeth to be the most frequently worried about part of their appearance

-35% did not know the role enamel plays in overall oral health, and only half knew enamel protected against cavities

The innovation provides dual support – enamel repair and cavity protection – by locking in vital minerals that absorb deep into the enamel to help repair microdamage and rebuild enamel strength while also inhibiting the demineralization of enamel, leaving teeth strong and more protected.*

"At GSK, we pride ourselves on developing innovative new oral care products utilizing our deep science expertise to provide consumers with a meaningful solution," said Chris Concerto, Senior Brand Manager of Pronamel. "Our goal with the launch of new Pronamel Repair toothpaste is to provide consumers with a product that not only helps repair and strengthen acid-weakened enamel but protects against the effects of acid erosion as well."

Pronamel Repair toothpaste is available online and at major retail stores nationwide and is SLS-free and made without phosphates. Pronamel also offers other toothpastes with fluoride for enamel protection and cavity prevention, which include Strong & Bright, Fresh Breath, Gentle Whitening, Multi-Action and Daily Protection. To learn more about Pronamel products and enamel repair, visit www.pronamel.us or follow Pronamel on Twitter and Facebook.

DMG's Young Key Opinion Leader Program Mentors the Next Generation of KOLs

Posted on Wednesday, March 6, 2019

DMG, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of restorative materials and preventive products, announced that its Young Key Opinion Leader Program is celebrating its first anniversary and making significant progress toward its mission of helping to develop dentistry’s next generation of influencers.

“Key opinion leaders play a truly critical role that benefits not only dental practitioners, but dental product manufacturers as well. We are proud to help foster a new wave of thought leaders who will be able to have a great impact on the dental industry for years to come,” said George Wolfe, President DMG America.

DMG recruited four highly respected KOLs to serve as the program’s mentors at the group’s initial meeting at the CDS Midwinter Meeting in Chicago in February 2018: Lee Ann Brady, DMD; David Little, DDS; Elliot Mechanic, DDS; and David Rice, DDS.

These KOLs are currently mentoring nine rising stars selected for the program based on the outstanding promise they have demonstrated early in their careers:

• Albert Ambrize, DDS

• Celin Arce, DDS

• Katie DeWood, DMD

• Courtney Lavigne, DMD

• Nate Lawson, DMD, PhD

• Laura Picano, DDS

• Amisha Singh, DDS

• Sarah Slone, DMD

• Sarah Winter, DMD

The nine program members are receiving instruction and guidance from the mentors in a variety of areas, including:

• Writing clinical and practice management articles

• Scheduling and conducting lectures and webinars

• Communicating with the dental community using a wide variety of media (including blogs, podcasts, e-newsletters, videos, etc.)

• Evaluation of new products

The YKOL Program has partnered with Dental Economics to create the NextGen Leadership Showcase, a monthly series of articles written by program members. There will also be a series of webinars conducted by members.

Other YKOL Program initiatives include collaboration with Ignite DDS, which was founded by Dr. David Rice to mentor dental school students and young dentists who are in their first 10 years of practice, and with the American Society of Dental Aesthetics (ASDA), of which Dr. Elliot Mechanic is a fellow.

The YKOL Program has an international flavor thanks to DMG America’s global headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, which has a similar initiative called the Identity Program. The YKOL Program and the Identity Program are now able to compare notes and occasionally have one program’s members travel across the Atlantic to participate in the other program. For example, Dr. Amisha Singh recently participated in an Identity Program event in Hamburg.

In addition to preparing a brilliant, talented group of young clinicians to keep their generation of practitioners apprised of the technologies and techniques that can deliver the best possible dental care and practice productivity, the YKOL Program is providing DMG key insights to help ensure that its products and services will do an even better job of meeting the evolving needs of young dentists.

Research Points Toward Possible New Treatment for Periodontitis

Posted on Wednesday, March 6, 2019

STONY BROOK, NY, March 4 , 2019 – Periodontitis is a progressive inflammatory disease that affects approximately half of all American adults. Colonization of the oral cavity by a bacterial pathogen called Porphyomonas gingivalis is a key event in the development of periodontal disease. This bacteria assembles hair-like structures on its surface called fimbriae to adhere in the oral cavity and initiate and sustain infection. Now researchers at Stony Brook University led by David Thanassi, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, reveal new details about how fimbriae are assembled and demonstrate that targeting P gingivalis with certain peptides inhibits the fimbriae, thus potentially halting the development of periodontitis.

Their method and findings are published in the March issue of Infection and Immunity.

The results of the research, conducted in collaboration with Stephen Walker, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology in the School of Dental Medicine, serve as a foundation for developing drugs that are specifically targeted to inhibit P gingivalis in the oral cavity, providing a new treatment method for periodontal disease and an alternative to the use of traditional antibiotics.

The research was supported in part by the National Institutes of Health REACH initiative via the Long Island Bioscience Hub and Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University, as well as IRACDA-NYCAPS Postdoctoral Fellowship from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

A Grown-up Brush Designed for Kids From quip

Posted on Tuesday, March 5, 2019

Kids find pride in using products that look and feel like those the adults in their life use, so we made a grown-up toothbrush designed for kids, to help them enjoy brushing their teeth, better and more often. quip for kids has all of the same guiding features of the original quip (but none of the childish gimmicks of other kids’ brushes), thoughtfully tweaked for smaller mouths and hands, and to help guide healthy habits that last beyond their baby teeth.

"We spent a year working with Kids and Pediatric dentists to work out what would make up the ideal kids brush. The dentists’ most common request was to create a brush that replicated the fundamental habit and attitude changing effect our adult brushes have had: encouraging and guiding an effective two minute, twice daily brushing routine. The most impactful finding during research was that Kids would beam with pride when they were given a “grown-up” electric brush, and parents were relieved to see this lasting excitement, rather than the short lived buzz a typical flashy kids brush usually had. The act of brushing went from something kids would avoid at all costs, to a routine they consistently looked forward to, which was a dentist and parents dream. After a few tweaks to help improve grip for smaller hands, and a brush head perfect for smaller teeth, the same simple, signature quip silhouette and sensitive, timed sonic vibrations were the key to inspiring Kids’ positive attitudes and adherence to their oral care routine." - Simon Enever, CEO of quip

“There's a common misconception that oral health is less important for children because primary teeth eventually fall out. Brushing with good technique from an early age is important to help reduce plaque, prevent cavities and maintain healthy gums. Baby teeth play many critical roles in development: they help to save space for the adult teeth, support proper craniofacial bone growth, and aid in eating and speech development. Childhood habits also prepare you to live as a healthy adult." - Dr. Jeremy Krell, DMD, Director of Dental at quip
