Dentsply Sirona at the IDS 2019

Posted on Thursday, January 10, 2019

Visitors to the IDS 2019 can look forward to an imaginative and exciting program from Dentsply Sirona. Numerous product presentations, hands-on courses, and an "innovation corner" all provide a platform for in-depth exchanges. "Our products are innovative thanks to our customers," explained Don Casey, CEO at Dentsply Sirona. "Our ideas are often inspired by conversations with them." The booth is a great place to honor this cooperation and the Dentsply Sirona photo booth provides an ideal meeting point. Visitors can pose for their personalized cover of the trenDS magazine from Dentsply Sirona. What's more, it makes good sense to flick through this magazine, as it features the four new design trends from Dentsply Sirona for practice equipment in 2019/2020.

Those who want to get an in-depth look at the specialist issues can take part in hands-on tutorials. Three courses on integrated endodontics, integrated implant dentistry, and intraoral X-ray positioning will be offered; to this end a seminar room equipped with modern technology will be available at the booth. Participants may receive two training points for each tutorial they attend – allowing them to combine the tradeshow visit with training in the best possible way. Registration will be open starting from February 4, 2019, on the website www.dentsplysirona.com/ids-tutorials.

The CEREC live demonstrations directly at the booth are now almost a tradition. These give trade fair visitors the chance to experience the proven CAD/CAM system first-hand and also discover the latest workflow developments. Nearly 20 live treatments on patients will be shown on two stages every day during the entire trade fair. They will illustrate just how versatile CEREC is and how different materials are suitable for various indications. Moreover, dentists and dental technicians will be demonstrating innovative workflows from endodontics, orthodontics, implantology, and imaging systems.

Dentsply Sirona will be presenting its entire product portfolio in halls 10.2 and 11.2. Experts will be on hand to provide comprehensive advice to all interested parties. "We are well aware that our strength lies in combining innovative products with intelligent workflows without compromising flexibility for dental professionals," stressed Don Casey. "We refuse to rest on our laurels – in fact, the opposite is true as we continue to aim higher. It is often the details that have a big impact."

New technologies for first-class treatments

Acuris, the new innovation in implant dentistry that Dentsply Sirona will be presenting at the IDS 2019, is a major breakthrough. Acuris is based on a conometric concept that uses friction instead of a screw or cement to secure the crown and the cap to the abutment in the final prosthetic part of the implant treatment.  It represents the best of two worlds: a retention that is removable for the dentist but fixed for the patient. It will be available for all three implant systems from Dentsply Sirona in time for the IDS.

Within the complete TruNatomy range of products, the flexible 3-file sequence slim design (MFD 0.8) combined with an off-centered cross section for better debris removal offers more efficiency than previous files at a higher speed. It enables practitioners to work safely whilst preserving as much of the original tooth structure as possible. Complemented by corresponding obturation and a flexible irrigation needle that ensures appropriate disinfection, the TruNatomy system helps improve endodontic treatments and creates genuine added value for dentists and patients.

Additional benefits for both parties will also be presented at the IDS in the field of orthodontics with the further development of In-Ovation. In-Ovation X is the latest generation of self-ligating brackets, which have been further improved in terms of functionality, user-friendliness, and design. In-Ovation X combines the necessary clinical performance with the wearing comfort that patients expect today. The highlight is the unprecedented voice of customer research around the world that drove relevant innovation.

Three user groups, namely dentists, dental hygienists, and prophylaxis assistants, all benefit from a new tool: The Purevac HVE System with Mirror Tips and Hose Adapter. Purevac HVE is a high-volume aspirator with a dental mirror, combined in a single instrument which creates greater efficiency. The tool can remove 90% more aerosols during procedures such as ultrasonic scaling, compared to a low-volume saliva ejector.1 And, the mirror tip is at-hand, ready to use whenever needed. One of Dentsply Sirona’s fundamental goals is to help protect dental professionals and patients from harmful infections in the dental practice. The Dentsply Sirona Purevac HVE System is a large step towards that goal.

In the words of Don Casey, a visit to the Dentsply Sirona booths at IDS is a valuable use of time. "And who knows, perhaps the discussions had here will give rise to the next innovations from Dentsply Sirona."

Interested dentists and dental technicians are cordially invited to experience these and many more of Dentsply Sirona’s new products and technologies and to try them out themselves with expert support at the IDS from March 12 to 16, 2019. As always, there will be a special trade fair discount on purchases made at the Dentsply Sirona IDS booth.

Supply Clinic Announces Expanded 2019 Online Catalog

Posted on Wednesday, January 9, 2019

Supply Clinic, the online marketplace for dental supplies, announced the addition of a dozen new product lines to their customer offering leading into 2019. 3M Oral Care, Kerr, GC America, DMG America, and Parkell’s products are now available for purchase at SupplyClinic.com.

As customers switch to online purchasing in ever-increasing numbers, manufacturers and distributors are following suit. “The dental supply industry is a prime example where improved customer experience, transparent pricing and trusted selection online will improve business for dentists serving patients, and shift a traditional distribution model to online channels like Supply Clinic,” explained John Rossman, former Director of Merchant Integration at Amazon.com.

Healthcare supply chain experts have already taken notice. “We take for granted that online shopping occurs in every aspect of our personal lives so the sea change in business-to-business shopping is inevitable. The need to be waited on by salespeople is fast becoming the exception,” expounded Alan Weinstein, former Founder & CEO of Premier, Inc., one of the largest hospital supply group purchasing organizations.

And Supply Clinic, which prioritizes patient safety and protects against the sale of gray-market materials, is well-positioned in this growing market. “Working with Supply Clinic introduces dentists to optimized pricing to supply an efficient and effective office. And most importantly, Supply Clinic protects against gray market materials that could erode confidence in patient outcomes,” said Lyndon Cooper, DDS, PhD, Associate Dean for Research at UIC College of Dentistry and former president of American College of Prosthodontists.

“Now more than ever, distributors and manufacturers must collaborate to ensure a secure supply chain,” said Shawn Gregg, 3M, Director of Strategic Accounts and Channel. “We are all responsible for preserving the integrity of our industry and protecting patients.”

Supply Clinic continues to deliver more value to sellers and dentists alike, as it grows and offers more tools for managing the purchase of supplies.

About Supply Clinic

Supply Clinic is the leading online marketplace for dental supplies. With over 100 authorized dealers selling through the site, Supply Clinic offers dentists the convenience of one-stop shopping with industry-leading cost savings. Formlabs Announces Availability of Digital Dentures

Posted on Tuesday, January 8, 2019

Formlabs has announced the availability of Digital Dentures, the first truly accessible direct 3D-printed dental prosthetic that pushes the boundaries of 3D printing in the dental industry by lowering costs and making denture manufacturing more efficient.

Tested at length with dental technicians, Denture Base Resin and Denture Teeth Resin enable dental labs and practices to produce fully 3D-printed dentures accurately and reliably.

Changing the Way Prosthetics are Made

Treatments for edentulous patients have come a long way since ancient Italians in the seventh century BC first replaced teeth with partial dentures made out of human or animal teeth. Today, 50 million dentures are produced a year globally, but only 1 percent are produced using digital tools.

Modern dentures are made from acrylic resin and other plastics. The time-consuming and labor-intensive analog workflow involves multiple patient visits and production steps. Denture manufacturing is a complex craft with a steep learning curve, and dental labs increasingly struggle to find technicians with the advanced skills and expertise required to produce them.

3D printed digital dentures are a major step toward the overall simplification of the dental laboratory manufacturing process.

3D printed full dentures consist of different parts for the teeth and gingiva, printed separately and unified in post-processing.

Benefits of a Digital Denture Workflow

Using dental design software and 3D printing to manufacture dentures offers a number of instant advantages:

  • Low-cost production: Affordable hardware allows labs to expand production without adding substantial overhead. Material costs around $10 per part for a complete denture compared to $50 using traditional denture cards and acrylic.

  • Accurate, consistent, high-quality results: A directly 3D printed prosthetic means fewer steps and less variability—a more consistent workflow for a quality end product every time.

  • Intuitive, adaptable tools:The digital workflow fits into your traditional processes today and will be much easier to teach to tomorrow’s digitally savvy dental lab technicians.

  • Simplified, fast remakes: Digital denture designs are reusable, shareable, modifiable and easy to reproduce with 3D printing.

  • Truly custom teeth:Unlike pre-manufactured denture cards, digital dentures are completely patient-specific.

With an efficient, scalable workflow, intuitive hardware and software, and a substantial cost advantage over their handcrafted counterparts, digital dentures will drive better patient outcomes, provide more consistent results, and be more inclusive for everyone who needs treatment.

How to Manufacture Digital Dentures

The Formlabs solution digitizes denture manufacturing, while fitting seamlessly into traditional workflows now.  Although the manufacturing process to create a digital denture is different from the traditional workflow, the chairside process is very similar.

Today’s digital denture workflow begins after the laboratory pours and articulates the wax-rim and final model. A technician digitizes the model and wax-rim with a desktop 3D scanner, then designs the denture digitally and 3D prints a try-in or the final denture.

Download their application guide (PDF) for best practices, design guidelines, and the detailed workflow from start to finish.

The Future of Dental Prosthetics

3D printing has promised to change the way things are made, and 3D printed dentures are one of the first truly economical ways in which people outside of fabrication industries will come to use and interact with 3D printed parts on a day to day basis.

Completely digital 3D printed prosthetics are the future of the dental industry. As digital workflows gain foothold clinically, digital scanning, design, and manufacturing will streamline the entire workflow, reducing the number of appointments and lead time from the first patient visit to the finished denture.

Get Started With Digital Dentures

Digital workflows are already becoming the standard for a number of key dental indications such as surgical guides, clear aligners, crown and bridge models, splints and occlusal guards, or pattern for casting and pressing, and over 10,000 dental professionals are using the Form 2 successfully in the field.

With the latest addition to their library of Dental Resins, Formlabs has set out to make digital dentures as easy and cost-effective as possible.

exocad Settles Software Piracy and DMCA Infringement Lawsuit

Posted on Tuesday, January 8, 2019

exocad has announced that it has settled a software piracy and Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) infringement lawsuit with one of its former customers, a USA-based dental lab.

The USA-based customer had purchased a 'cracked' version of exocad DentalCAD software from a website offering counterfeit exocad software, which came to the attention of exocad's License Compliance team.

As part of the settlement, the former customer will pay exocad the sum of US $220,000.00 in damages.

"We closely monitor usage of pirated exocad software," said Tillmann Steinbrecher, CEO of exocad. "To enforce our zero-tolerance policy, we are starting to take legal action. We strongly suggest that all users of pirated exocad software replace their installations with legitimate licenses, instead of putting their businesses at risk."

Inaugural exocad Insights Exceeds Expectations

Posted on Monday, January 7, 2019

Approximately 600 people from more than 40 countries converged on Darmstadt, Germany, for the inaugural exocad Insights conference November 19-20. The event featured presentations about exocad’s open-architecture solutions, international guest speakers, commercial partner presentations, in-depth training sessions, networking, and more.

“Insights went incredibly well,” said Larry Bodony, President of exocad America. “There had never been a conference with so many people dedicated to the open-architecture concept in one place.”

Tillmann Steinbrecher, exocad’s CEO, gave a keynote address that included the history of the company. Bodony provided overviews of various exocad offerings, and laboratory owners Michael Anger, Vanik Kaufmann-Jinoian, Waldo Zarco Nosti, and Uli Hauschild were among the other speakers. Subjects covered included smile design, implant planning, and exocad’s new partial denture software.

“The show went very well,” Steinbrecher said. “It was a wonderful atmosphere. It inspired people by bringing together dental professionals who share a fascination not just with digital dentistry but also with a very open approach to changing the market.”

At the conclusion of the event, exocad announced that the next Insights event will be held in March 2020 in Germany. More details will be forthcoming, but Bodony expects a significant amount of anticipation based on the success of the inaugural event.

“It was really something,” Bodony said. “Everyone who attended left with big smiles on their faces.”

Medicare Dental Bill Introduced

Posted on Monday, January 7, 2019

On January 4, Senator Ben Cardin from Maryland introduced S.22, the Medicare Dental Benefit Act of 2019 — a bill that, if enacted, would allow older adults and persons with disabilities to access their oral healthcare as they do their medical care — through Medicare.

During the past four years, Oral Health America, along with partners in aging, health policy and dental organizations, have worked together to advocate for adding a dental benefit to Medicare Part B under a shared commitment to improve the health and well-being of all Medicare beneficiaries. S.22 recognizes that oral health is connected to total body health by covering services that are necessary to prevent disease and promote oral health, restore oral structures to health and function, and treat emergency conditions. A provision under Medicare Part B signifies that all beneficiaries would receive coverage, including those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.

People face many barriers when it comes to accessing oral healthcare including a lack of educational resources and the ability to pay for needed care. Additionally, poor oral health has multiple implications relative to chronic other diseases. Poor oral health impacts nutrition as well as mental and social health and the ability to live independently in the community. Through OHA’s Tooth Wisdom®: Get Smart About Your Mouth community workshops, hygienists are equipping older adults with tips on how to maintain a healthy mouth while aging. At the beginning of class, participants are asked why oral health is important to them. One Chicagoan exclaimed, “To kiss!”

“For Oral Health America, S.22 is more than adding dental and oral health services to Medicare Part B; it’s about ensuring people can take part in their day to day activities like eating nutritious foods without pain, playing with their grandchildren without embarrassment and feeling confident about kissing their significant others!” says Beth Truett, President & CEO of Oral Health America.

OHA commends and thanks Senator Cardin for his steadfast leadership and support in improving oral health access across the lifespan. Working alongside other advocates, Oral Health America looks forward to attaining the bipartisan support needed to pass S.22 in Congress. Read the full text of S.22.
