Carbon, Dentsply Sirona Partner on Dentures

Posted on Wednesday, January 23, 2019

The past few years have yielded technology advancements for digital denture fabrication. However, the majority of units are still produced using traditional methods. Dentsply Sirona and Carbon are committed to taking the category to an entirely new level by bringing to market the first premium printable denture material system that will provide significant advancements in terms of material benefits, laboratory process, and patient function.

“We’re very excited to team with Carbon to deliver a total seamless workflow for increasing laboratory efficiency and elevate state-of-art materials for removable appliance fabrication in the 3D dental printing space,” said Julie Mroziak, Vice President Lab at Dentsply Sirona.

Leveraging Carbon printers and innovative Digital Light Synthesis™ technology for high-resolution output and high-throughput capacity, the new Dentsply Sirona materials will establish a paradigm shift in terms of strength, esthetics, and laboratory efficiencies for 3D printed dentures. Dentsply Sirona brings over 100 years of experience in the development of denture materials, as well as extensive expertise in scanning and CAD/CAM software including well-known brands such as Lucitone®, IPN®, and inLab® that are globally recognized for quality and durability."

“This partnership with Dentsply Sirona is a testament to Carbon’s global vision and mission to enhance the digital ecosystem,” said Brian Ganey, General Manager of Carbon’s Dental Business. “Together, we will be able to offer the marketplace a complete digital denture solution that is superior in terms of strength and esthetics. With Carbon as the leading digital manufacturer in digital dentistry and Dentsply Sirona’s global leadership in removable appliances, we can deliver an unmatched offering that benefits both the dental laboratory and the patient.”

Carbon offers a revolutionary alternative to 3D printing, using light and oxygen to rapidly produce high-quality, end-use products from a pool of resin. Its robust and reliable family of 3D printers based on proprietary Digital Light Synthesis™ technology, coupled with its innovative software and broad portfolio of materials, delivers a complete and comprehensive digital manufacturing solution for all dental production needs. Carbon solutions significantly improve efficiency and accuracy, reduce time from design to manufacture, and provide important features such as part traceability and serialization through next-gen software design tools. With Carbon, everything is digitally traceable, down to a unique ID that can automatically be engraved or embossed on any part. This capability is particularly valuable for highly regulated industries like dental, where the FDA will increasingly require part-specific data to ensure product performance and patient safety.

The Dentsply Sirona denture materials for Carbon digital manufacturing solutions are slated to be available in the US later in 2019.

Kulzer and DENTCA Partner to Make Dentures More Efficient and Accurate

Posted on Wednesday, January 23, 2019

Kulzer has announced that it has entered into an agreement with DENTCA to launch a web-based denture design platform that will allow Kulzer’s customers to design a denture online, download the design file and print the denture. The result will be significant time savings and accuracy enhancements that will benefit dental practices, labs, and patients alike. DENTCA, like Kulzer, is a Mitsui Chemicals company.

Kulzer’s new design platform, Pala Design Studio, allows lab technicians to design a denture case in under 20 minutes, which is a small fraction of the time it would take with conventional dentures. The technology also allows practices to require only two visits from their patients, compared to up to five visits with conventional dentures.

“We are extremely excited to be partnering with our sister company to bring DENTCA’s outstanding digital design platform to our valued customers,” said Lesley Melvin, Kulzer’s Director of Marketing and Product Management. “Our commitment to helping practices, labs, and patients benefit from the exceptional efficiency and accuracy of digital dentures is unmatched in our industry, and this partnership is just the latest example of that commitment.”

AACD Charitable Foundation’s Give Back a Smile Program Celebrates its 20th Anniversary

Posted on Wednesday, January 23, 2019

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation (AACDCF) is celebrating the 20-year anniversary of its Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program, which rebuilds the smiles and lives of adults who’ve suffered dental injuries from domestic and sexual violence.

Since its launch in May of 1999, AACD member dentists, dental laboratories, and other dental professionals have volunteered their time and expertise pro bono to restore the damaged smiles of more than 1,700 survivors of intimate partner violence for a total dollar value of more than $16 million.

The GBAS program started their mission because of survivors like Dawn, who after a domestic abuse incident, woke up in the hospital with a fractured skull, broken ribs, a scarred face, and destroyed teeth. She had lost her job, her house, and her self-respect, and spent years trying to rebuild her confidence. She was ashamed of the way she looked until a domestic abuse advocate told her about the Give Back a Smile program. Dawn is now getting her degree in counseling and working towards her dream of advocating for other women trapped in abusive relationships.

"GBAS gave me back the dignity my abuser had robbed me of. I no longer look in the mirror and see a tarnished woman. I see a beautiful smile and light in that woman’s eyes. I have become the selfie queen!” – Dawn, domestic abuse survivor

To ensure the Give Back a Smile program can provide services to survivors like Dawn for another twenty years, consider one of these many ways to support the program:

• Donate online to GBAS

• Become a volunteer

• Join the Whitening Challenge

• GBAS Silent Auction - Bidding for the 2019 auction will open April 1!

• Learn how to help someone experiencing domestic violence

The AACD Charitable Foundation is also hosting a celebration in the Ultimate Skybox in San Diego, California, during the 35th Annual American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Scientific Session on Thursday, April 25, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. This event is open to the public and sponsored by Ceatus Media Group. The celebration will include food, live music, and other GBAS supporters who really know how to have a good time for a great cause. Attendees of this event will have the pleasure of taking in the breathtaking 360-degree landscape of the San Diego coastline as well as an exciting aerial view of the San Diego baseball stadium, Petco Park. Tickets are $125 USD/person and are limited to the first 200 people. Event proceeds benefit survivors of domestic and sexual violence through the Give Back a Smile program. For more information about this event, or to register for the 35th Annual AACD Scientific Session, visit www.aacdconference.com.

To learn more about the GBAS program, visit www.aacd.com/aboutGBAS.

One in four women will experience intimate partner violence in her lifetime. If you or someone you know could be helped by GBAS or would like to get involved in the program, please visit the GBAS website at www.givebackasmile.com or call toll-free 800.773.4227 for more information.

Luxatemp and LuxaCore Honored by THE DENTAL ADVISOR

Posted on Tuesday, January 22, 2019

DMG America announced today that its Luxatemp Fluorescence was named “Top Provisional: Esthetic” by THE DENTAL ADVISOR, the 11th time this honor has gone to a member of the Luxatemp product family. In addition, DMG’s LuxaCore Z® Dual was named “Preferred Product” in the “Composite: Core Material” category.

The Luxatemp brand of materials is the unquestioned choice of dental professionals when the situation calls for a provisional crown and bridge material that delivers life-life esthetics. Thanks to its proprietary nanotechnology and bis-acryl composition, Luxatemp Fluorescence delivers flexural strength that is unheard of in a provisional material. In addition to being fracture- and abrasion-resistant, it produces exceptionally life-like provisionals. It also exhibits negligible liner shrinkage during polymerization, and its excellent marginal adaptation eliminates any need for remargination. Moreover, its unusually natural fluorescence takes on the same dynamic reflective qualities as natural tooth structure, and its six shades are highly stable and attractive in all lighting conditions.

Consultants from THE DENTAL ADVISOR reported that Luxatemp Fluorescence exhibited high strength without being brittle. One consultant said the material has “superior esthetics for a

temporary material,” while another said it “polishes wonderfully and looks very natural.” LuxaCore Z Dual, an ultra-strong, ultra-reliable core build-up material created with zirconia, is the ultimate in resin technology. It has exceptionally high compressive strength for enhanced stability, and its patented nanotechnology prevents particle agglomeration. With a film thickness similar to a precision cement, LuxaCore Z Dual cuts like natural dentin. It has enhanced flow and is smoother than other core build-up materials, as well as more stable, firmer and easier to form.

LuxaCore Z-Dual also works for post cementing needs. It is available in the Automix System with with 3 shades: A3, Light Opaque and Blue. Consultants from THE DENTAL ADVISOR praised LuxaCore Z Dual for its excellent handling and ease of dispensing and trimming. One consultant said “its viscosity is incomparable,” while another said “the cured material is hard and cuts line dentin.”

KaVo Kerr Announces the Launch of Take 1™ Retraction

Posted on Monday, January 21, 2019

KaVo Kerr is excited to introduce Take 1™ Retraction Paste, a new minimally invasive paste that promotes moisture control and hemostasis while temporarily retracting gingival tissues. A dual-action paste with 15% aluminum chloride and kaolin clay, Take 1™ Retraction prepares tissue for both traditional and digital impressions, veneer or crown cementation, and composite restorations in class II, class III, and class V fillings. The unit dose capsules are packaged with retraction caps and tips, and compatible with standard composite dispensers, therefore eliminating the need to purchase extra accessories.

To meet the needs of clinicians and patients, Take 1™ Retraction Paste is available in two paste viscosities. The thinner consistency of the Take 1™ Low Viscosity paste provides hemostasis & retraction and can also replace the second cord in a double-cord technique. Take 1™ High Viscosity option is a thicker consistency to ensure the paste fills the sulcus for optimal retraction while providing hemostasis. Both viscosity pastes are gentle on tissue for better patient experience, and simple to clean off—requiring a quick rinse and air dry.

In short, the new Take 1™ Retraction Paste controls moisture and hemostasis, manages tissue, and offers the simplicity dentists are looking for in what would otherwise be a time-consuming procedure.
