On Friday, November 16, 2018, Nobel Biocare hosted a full day of education for New York City College of Technology’s Restorative Dentistry Department, in collaboration with dental school students from Touro College of Dental Medicine. This fantastic day of education was filled with valuable multi-disciplinary educational components, as well as a facility tour encompassing digital dentistry, implantology, and all of the unique and robust equipment available through Nobel Biocare, Danahaer corporation. This unique experience provided both clinical and technical students with an opportunity to engage in stimulating conversations and learning experiences. The AAE is proud to announce the 2019 recipients of its most prestigious awards, to be presented at the Association’s annual meeting in Montréal this April.

“We are honored and thrilled to announce the winners of our top awards and to celebrate their achievements in the endodontic specialty,” said AAE President Dr. Patrick E. Taylor. “These five AAE members stood out as leaders within the research, education and service communities, and we are incredibly proud to be presenting them with these awards.”

The award winners, listed below, will officially be recognized during the AAE’s annual meeting, known as AAE19. Guests of the award recipients and others who plan to attend the meeting —April 10-13 — can register online now at aae.org/aae19. Early registration is encouraged, and the deadline is March 1.

Louis E. Rossman, D.M.D. (pictured), will receive the Edgar D. Coolidge Award, AAE’s highest honor, in recognition of his extraordinary leadership and exemplary dedication to dentistry and endodontics. Dr. Rossman is a clinical professor of endodontics and overseer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

Known to his friends as “Luigi,” Dr. Rossman is never one to back down from a challenge —from complicated root canal treatments to mountain climbing. He is a past president of the AAE, the Foundation for Endodontics and the American Board of Endodontics, and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine specialty program in Endodontics.

Markus Haapasalo, D.D.S., Ph.D., is the winner of the Louis I. Grossman Award for cumulative publication of significant research studies that have made an extraordinary contribution to endodontology. Dr. Happsalao is active in various dental organizations and has authored or co-authored over 200 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He served as head of the Department of Oral Biological Medical Science at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Haapasalo has served as an editor on several endodontic and dental journals, including the Journal of Endodontics.

Glenn R. Walters, D.D.S., B.D.S., is the winner of the Calvin D. Torneck Part-Time Educator Award, recognizing his contributions to endodontics through his dedication as a part-time educator. He currently teaches at The University Texas Health and Science Center in San Antonio and he has held dozens of leadership positions on various boards and at a variety of academic institutions.

James D. Johnson, D.D.S, M.S., is the winner of the I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award, presented to an individual whose contributions to endodontics in the field of education have demonstrated excellence through selfless commitment to full-time educational pursuits, and whose contributions have instilled in students the desire to pursue excellence in their careers. Dr. Johnson is professor and chair of University of Washington’s School of Dentistry and a past president of the American Board of Endodontics. He received his D.D.S. degree from Northwestern University and served in the U.S. Air Force as a dental officer.

Avina K. Paranjpe, B.D.S, M.S., Ph.D., M.S.D., is the winner of the Edward M. Osetek Award, which is presented to a full-time educator with less than 10 years of teaching experience, who has earned the esteem and respect of students and faculty associates. She is an associate professor in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Washington and a part of the 2018-19 American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute.

This year, up to $300,000 will be awarded to university faculty for scientific and technological research initiatives to advance patient care in the fields of orthodontics and dentistry.

The Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) has added the Ivoclar ProgaMill 7 (PM7)—one of the most advanced digital dentistry production machines—to its dental laboratory. This addition helps prepare dental students to be leaders in their profession because of their advanced knowledge of computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). ​

Within the past decade, digital dentistry has changed the way dentists and dental technicians create dental restorations—restoring the function, integrity, and morphology of missing teeth and tooth structures with items such as bridges, crowns, or even veneers. Part of that evolution included using CAD/CAM, which allows dentists to digitally design restorations with software and manufacture them with the use of mills. 

The PM7 is a mill that takes a digital design of patients’ teeth that were created by dental technicians and then robotically creates them through subtractive manufacturing. It is one of the most recent advancements in mill machinery because of its ability to create a wide range of restorations using a large variety of materials.​

Jessica Kim, DDS, director of the Hugh Love Center for Research and Education in Technology at the School of Dentistry, says she was a part of the team of administrators, faculty, and technicians who identified what students needed to know to be successful in private practice and collaboratively worked to acquire this new technology for the school. ​

“We are right up there with the latest technology,” Kim said. “As state-of-the-art technology comes out, we are engaging with it, acquiring it, and developing best practices to teach it. This new technology will allow our students to be on par with the vision of the future for dentistry.”​

Kim says many current practitioners have yet to learn the latest advanced technology and most dentists are currently using pre-CAD/CAM methodology. Before digital dentistry, for patients needing restorations such as crowns or dentures, dentists would make an impression in a patient’s mouth and then send the case to the lab for a technician to pour a plaster-type material into it to create a working model. ​

The use of CAD/CAM greatly diminishes the need for that laborious task and inserts digital technology. For example, if a dentist shaved down a patient’s tooth to make room for a crown, a dentist can now use a wand to scan the mouth instead of having to create the mold in the mouth manually. Now, an image is sent to a computer where a technician uses software to digitally build the tooth back up.​

Once the creation is completed, the digital image file is then sent to a milling machine, such as the PM7. The robotic arms of the machine will then mill or carve out the image it received. The PM7 mill can make dental implant crowns, inlays, onlays, veneers, partial crowns, crowns, bridges, hybrid bridges, and digital complete dentures.​

John Won, DDS, MS, a prosthodontist and the Head of the Division of General Dentistry at the School of Dentistry said allowing students to get hands-on experience with some of the latest technology allows them to be more competitive in the profession. Won says CAD-CAM technology and digital dentistry are growing, and many practitioners would be thrilled to bring on talent who know how to use it. 

“We want them to go out and be leaders,” Won said. “We want our students to be able to go out there and immediately have marketable skills and help practices transition from traditional methods to modern digital dentistry.”
