Henry Schein, Inc. Builds More Than 17,000 Hygiene Kits For People In Need In Inaugural 'We Care Global Challenge'

Posted on Thursday, September 13, 2018

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) today announced that Team Schein Members (TSMs) from around the world have collaborated to build more than 17,000 hygiene kits for girls, children, and adults living in international emergency areas. TSMs assembled the kits as part of the Company's inaugural We Care Global Challenge, an initiative that aims to bring colleagues together under the shared mission of benefiting children and communities in need.

Beginning at the Henry Schein Germany national sales meeting in January and continuing at the national sales meetings for the Company's Canada Dental and U.S. Animal Health, Medical, Special Markets, and Dental businesses, TSMs set about the goal of building a combined 10,000 hygiene kits. Working in partnership with global nonprofit organizations, Save the Children and Heart to Heart International, Team Schein quickly surpassed that goal and assembled 17,450 kits.

"The We Care Global Challenge embodies the charitable spirit that has long defined Team Schein's commitment to society, and I could not be more pleased with how our team came together across borders and across businesses," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "By leveraging our collective strengths with those of our partners, we have truly been able to 'help health happen' for people in need, especially in times of disaster. I am already looking forward to what we will accomplish together in next year's Challenge."

Each kit contains essential health and hygiene items, such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, washcloth, and towel. TSMs also assembled kits specially designed for girls entering adulthood. Save the Children has already distributed a number of the kits, to Syrian refugees living in Europe, adolescent girls in Malawi, children living in communities affected by natural disasters in Canada, and children at the U.S.-Mexico border. Kits have also been pre-positioned to assist in Hurricane Florence relief efforts.

"We are grateful to Henry Schein for their partnership in supporting our efforts to ensure children in the U.S. and around the world stay healthy when they are most vulnerable," said Save the Children President & CEO Carolyn Miles. "These hygiene kits play a critical role in our ability to effectively respond to emergencies and disaster-affected areas, and help meet children and their families' essential needs."

"Team Schein Members across the globe exemplified Heart to Heart International's PowrServ model of philanthropic team building, happily rolling up their sleeves for a wonderful cause," said Jim Mitchum, Chief Executive Officer, Heart to Heart International. "Each business team went above and beyond its original goal and demonstrated its own unique passion for making a difference. Team Schein was clearly up to the challenge and we thank them for their hard work and dedication to positively impacting our shared society."

The We Care Global Challenge is an initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the Company's global corporate social responsibility program. For more information about the We Care Global Challenge and Henry Schein's commitment to emergency preparedness and disaster response, please watch "Partnering to Prepare for Emergency", an interview with Jeanne-Aimee DeMarrais, senior adviser for U.S. emergencies at Save the Children. Henry Schein Announces New Roles for Senior Dental Leaders

Posted on Thursday, September 13, 2018

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC), the world’s largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, today announced new roles for two of its senior dental leaders. Tim Sullivan will assume the role of Executive Advisor, Global Dental, while A.J. Caffentzis will become President, U.S. Dental Distribution. Both Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Caffentzis will continue to report to Jonathan Koch, Senior Vice President and CEO of Henry Schein’s Global Dental Group.

In his new role, Mr. Sullivan will continue to provide executive leadership for the Henry Schein Dental Canada team, to lead the development of customer-focused strategic initiatives, and to help advance key supplier relationships. This change is part of Henry Schein’s formal, long-range succession planning effort.

“Over the course of 21 years, Tim has been one of our most inspiring, effective, and respected business leaders,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “Along with our Vice Chairman, Jim Breslawski, Tim played a significant leadership role in the successful integration of the teams from Sullivan Dental and Henry Schein to create the largest full-service dental business in the world.

“Tim has guided Henry Schein Dental North America through a period of tremendous growth, helped solidify our position as the leader in the global products market, and been a generous mentor to a new generation of leaders in our Company,” Mr. Bergman said. “A while ago, Tim asked us if he might take on a new role with Henry Schein. With the addition of two seasoned executives in Jonathan Koch and A.J. Caffentzis to what is an already excellent dental leadership team, we now have in place the necessary resources to help Tim take this next step in his professional career.”

“I am very excited to take on this advisory role as I transition to a new professional life,” said Mr. Sullivan. “Sullivan Dental Products, Sullivan-Schein Dental, and Henry Schein Dental have been my profession and my passion for more than two decades. This business is my family’s legacy, and I am most comfortable entrusting it to the capable hands of my Henry Schein colleagues, who have repeatedly proven themselves to be insightful, effective, and customer-focused business partners.”

As Mr. Sullivan moves into his new role, Mr. Caffentzis will assume responsibility for leadership of the U.S. Dental Distribution business. Mr. Caffentzis joined Henry Schein nearly two years ago following a successful career at AmerisourceBergen and before that at Johnson & Johnson. For the past year, he has been working closely with Mr. Sullivan and the U.S. Dental executive leadership team while leading the Henry Schein Special Markets group. Mr. Caffentzis’ team will include the leaders of all facets of the U.S. Dental Distribution and Special Markets businesses as he continues to increase internal collaboration and advance a “One Schein” offering to U.S. dental customers.

“My close partnership with Tim over the past 21 years has been inspiring and rewarding on both a professional and personal level,” said James Breslawski, Vice Chairman of the Board and President of Henry Schein. “In the relatively short time that he has been at Henry Schein, A.J. also has proven himself to be a most valuable partner and an effective leader. I am confident that A.J. and Jon Koch will forge the same strong partnership that Tim and I had, and work together to lead our U.S. dental business to even greater success.”

“The legacy of leadership that Henry Schein has written across the global dental community is unprecedented, and our U.S. dental business is the cornerstone of that achievement,” said Mr. Caffentzis. “The U.S. dental leadership team that Tim has assembled is outstanding. We are focused on continuing our growth by understanding our customers’ needs and providing our customers with innovative, comprehensive solutions to enhance efficiency and clinical success in this quickly changing world.”

Dentsply Sirona Launches Dentistry.com to Connect Dentists to New Patients

Posted on Thursday, September 13, 2018

Dentsply Sirona has announced the launch of Dentistry.com, the only digital platform built exclusively to connect patients to dentists. Created with consumers in mind, the free online community is dedicated to improving the state of dental health by increasing the number of new patients who go to the dentist and accept treatment.

Brian McCarthy, leader of the Dentisty.com project team, will unveil the platform at the Dentsply Sirona World meeting on September 13, 2018, in Orlando, FL, in front of an audience of thousands of dental professionals. Positioned as ‘The New Destination for Dentistry,’ the platform’s main purpose is to build relationships between dentists and patients. It features a search engine for patients that supports filtering by a number of criteria, including insurance network – one of the top ways patients choose a dentist. Additionally, the site will house a comprehensive directory of dental practices across the country.

"People live and conduct all their business on their phones today. Dentistry is challenged because it has not embraced this new mobile-centric reality. Complicating things is the fact that consumers just don't value dentistry as they do more trendy healthcare pursuits like yoga and meditation," said Brian McCarthy, Executive Vice President of Dentsply Sirona's subsidiary Futuredontics. "Dentistry.com is the online destination where the industry can band together to elevate the perception of dentistry to its proper place in healthcare."

Dentists joining the Dentistry.com community will be able to ‘claim their practice’ during the Dentsply Sirona World meeting. This allows dentists to manage their own page on the site where they can list information about themselves, their practice, and other relevant information that would assist in patient acquisition and retention. During the meeting, dentists who sign up will receive a complimentary practice profile that increases their online presence, offers access to national and local audiences, improves website SEO, and helps dentists connect with more new patients by listing services, insurance plans, hours, and more.

The website capitalizes on the shift of consumers to making booking decisions based on consumer reviews and the ability to make an appointment online. Independent research conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Dentistry.com revealed the following:

•64 percent of people find dentists through online sources, i.e. search engines, dental insurance websites, or online review service     •More than half of all dentists believe in a strong online presence     •Dentists across the board say that acquiring new patients is one of their biggest challenges

Dentistry.com is the only one-stop shop that provides patients with everything they need to know to make informed decisions about their oral health,” said Todd Daum, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Futuredontics. “From expert articles on dental care, researching dental procedures, or requesting an appointment with a local dentist, no other offering brings this together in one place. Our aim is to not just convert consumers into patients, but empower people to become their own health advocates.”

In the near future, Dentistry.com will roll out more features, including the ability for patients to book appointments directly from the site, and practice management system integrations to simplify Dentistry.com profile management. For more information, visit Dentistry.com.

American Academy of Periodontology Publishes Proceedings from Best Evidence Consensus Meeting on Lasers

Posted on Tuesday, September 11, 2018

CHICAGO – September 11, 2018 – The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), the leading professional organization dedicated to the dental specialty of periodontics, has published its “best evidence consensus” (BEC) panel proceedings on the topic of laser usage. The proceedings are the result of the AAP’s second BEC meeting, a model of scientific inquiry rooted in the best available published research and expert opinion. The BEC meeting on lasers was held in Chicago in February 2017.

The latest BEC meeting brought together a panel of 10 experts to discuss the efficacy of laser usage, either when used alone or as an adjunct to non-surgical and surgical treatment of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. The panel members were selected based on their extensive knowledge of laser therapy and experience in applying lasers to a broad range of clinical situations. The group found that when laser treatment is used in addition to mechanical treatment, similar or slightly better clinical outcomes are observed when compared with laser usage alone. Current evidence suggests that there is no additional benefit to lasers beyond what is seen with traditional periodontal surgery.

“Lasers are a part of a diverse treatment repertoire, and there are countless reported successful outcomes in their use,” says Steven R. Daniel, DDS, president of the AAP. “As the profession advances with the adoption and application of these technologies, the Academy is committed to using existing evidence and thoughtful expertise to bridge knowledge gaps and provide insight for responsible, real-world use.”

The BEC model of inquiry utilizes current, high-quality published literature and the expert opinion of periodontal thought leaders to provide guidance on innovative topics for which there is insufficient evidence to arrive at definitive conclusions.

The complete BEC proceedings appear in the July 2018 issue of the Journal of Periodontology(JOP). Similar to the inaugural BEC report on cone-beam computed tomography published in October 2017, the proceedings on lasers offer a consensus statementcommentary, and systematic reviewsrelated to the usage of lasers.

“I encourage all dental professionals to read the laser BEC proceedings carefully as they underscore how crucial scientific evidence is in influencing clinical recommendations,” Dr. Daniel adds. “The latest findings are not meant to insinuate that laser usage is more or less beneficial over traditional periodontal therapy or to imply an Academy position on its use in patient care. They simply demonstrate that, in the absence of a critical mass of evidence, all practitioners must rely on their judgement and expert training to make the best possible treatment decisions.”

The AAP’s best evidence consensus meeting on lasers was sponsored by J. Morita USA. To access the full BEC proceedings, please visit the Journal of Periodontology on the Wiley Online Library. For more information about the AAP or periodontal disease, visit perio.org.
