Axsys Dental Solutions to Distribute the New Medit i500 Intraoral Scanner

Posted on Thursday, June 21, 2018

Axsys Dental Solutions has announced that they have entered into an agreement with Medit to distribute their new i5OO intraoral scanner.

Costing $18,000 with no license fees, the i500 uses a high-speed dual camera system for fast, precise photogrammetry, is powderless, and is lightweight, with a fine tip for ease of use and patient comfort. It uses an open CAD/CAM system, meaning operators can export STL files out of the MeditLINK management software and instantly share them with the dental lab. They can also transfer files and track progress throughout the digital workflow.

Thanks to its intelligent scan detecting algorithm, the i500 also easily picks up where it left off if the scanning process is interrupted, making for a smoother scanning experience. The i500 takes rapid, video-based scans, and its smart technology means its colored scans can distinguish between soft tissue, plaque, and tooth enamel with a precision of 25 microns across the full arch.

“We diligently researched intraoral scanners and found the Medit i500 meets all of our stringent requirements for speed, flexibility, accuracy, and reliability, at a price that is affordable and accessible to all,” stated President Steve Braykovich of Axsys Incorporated. “Its impressive speed and powderless system shortens turnaround time for remarkable increases in productivity – and it clearly stands out as the most the most accurate cross arch IOS that we have investigated. By adding the Medit i500 to our portfolio, we’re able to say we have best-in-class offerings for every stage of workflow. If you’re just starting out and want a cost-effective introduction to all the benefits of digital dental workflow, this is a fantastic option. And for practices looking for a chairside system, they can come to us for complete solutions that are impossible to beat in terms of performance and affordability.”

Registration now open for AO Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting

Posted on Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Heralding the home of the first modern root form dental implant placed and restored in the United States, the Academy of Osseointegration’s (AO) Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will be held in National Harbor, MD September 14 – 15, 2018.

“Advances in Clinical Implant Dentistry” will focus on various disciplines within implant dentistry, including the latest in surgical, restorative and laboratory techniques. The Gaylord National Resort, one of the most elegant convention centers along the Eastern seaboard of the United States, will provide the backdrop for this historic meeting with its picturesque views of Washington, DC and old-town Alexandria from the shores of the Potomac River.

The two-day program, featuring AO Member presenters from the US mid-Atlantic region, will include:

September 14, 2018: Hands-on clinics

Dr. Joseph P. Fiorellini, an AO director, who has served as Head of the Division of Periodontology and postgraduate program director of periodontology at Harvard University, and is currently Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, will provide a hands-on course entitled “Socket Bone Grafting, with and without Biologic Modifiers.”

Tony Prestipino, CDT, Alexandria, VA, a long-time, active AO member and master laboratory technician in the Washington, DC area, will provide a review and hands-on course entitled “Advanced Protocols for Converting Removable Dentures to Fixed Interim Prostheses: A review and hands-on course.”

Saturday, March 15 Main Program

Dr. Eva Anadioti, Philadelphia, PA, director of the Post-Graduate Prosthodontics Specialty Program at the University of Pennsylvania, will provide a practical overview entitled “Implant Overdenture: The Past, the Present and the Future.”

Dr. Edgard El Chaar, New York, NY, director of the Postgraduate Periodontics Specialty Program at New York University, will present “Innovative Strategies and Techniques in Ridge Augmentation.”

Dr. Thomas Taylor, West Hartford, CT, head of the Department of Prosthodontics and Reconstructive Sciences at the University of Connecticut, will address the topic, “Occlusion and Dental Implants: What Gives?”

Dr. Maria Troulis is chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. Her presentation will be entitled “Bone Tissue Engineering.”

More than 30 poster presentations showcasing the latest cutting edge research in implant dentistry will also be on display at the meeting.

AO members are highly encouraged to invite their colleagues to this meeting, which carries historical significance in the field of osseointegration and AO’s history. In May 1982, following a three-day symposium hosted by Dr. George A. Zarb and conducted by Professor Per-Ingvar-Brånemark in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Paul H.J. Krogh, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Bethesda, MD, and his prosthodontic colleagues, Drs. Lloyd Vakay from Alexandria, VA, and his partner Dr. Daniel Y. Sullivan from Washington, DC, attended an intensive one-week training session in Sweden at the University of Göteborg, hosted by Dr. Brånemark. Two months following this training in October 1982, the trio became the first surgeons involved in the placement of titanium endosseous implants in four patients over two days, with Dr. Branemark placing the implants.

This revolutionary time in the field of implant dentistry subsequently sparked four training centers across the United States and one in Canada, as well as the Osseointegration Study Group in New York in 1984, the organization which then formed the Academy of Osseointegration in March 1985. Drs. Krogh and Sullivan would become two of the Academy’s early presidents in 1989 and 1993, respectively.

The mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will also serve as the promotional launch of the much-anticipated AO annual global scientific Annual Meeting, to be held March 13 – 16, 2019 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown Washington, DC.

“With a focus on multidisciplinary evidence-based implant dentistry, and the latest surgical, prosthetic and laboratory technologies, the Academy’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland is an event you will not want to miss! I’ll look forward to seeing you there!” said AO President Dr. James C. Taylor, who will be there to open the meeting.

Space is limited, so be sure to register early to guarantee your seat at this special event! Register here.

NBC Launches Computer-Based Testing for Written Examinations

Posted on Tuesday, June 19, 2018

NBC is excited to announce that they are launching computer-based testing for the written examinations. The first computer-based testing (CBT) written examinations will be offered beginning July 1, 2018.

"The NBC Board of Trustees has been researching computer-based testing options for some time now,” said NBC Chair, Denise Burris, CDT. “Our goal was to increase accessibility for dental technicians interested in pursuing the CDT examinations, without sacrificing examination security. We saw computer-based testing as an opportunity to offer a greater number of testing locations and more flexible scheduling.”

NBC will partner with Assessment Systems Corporation to offer the CDT and RG written examinations online using a third-party remote proctor. “Computer-based testing with remote proctoring still meets the desire for increased accessibility as candidates will be able to complete their CDT or RG written examinations online at a location, date, and time of their choosing,” said NBC Secretary/Fiscal Officer, Dennis Urban, CDT.

Of course, there will be certain rules to ensure the integrity of the process. For example, test takers will be required to select a 30-day testing window during which time they must schedule and complete their examination. Additionally, test takers will be required to test in a private location and no recording devices or test related materials may be on the desk or within reach of the test taker. Test takers must also have a computer available with a webcam, speakers, microphone and internet access to be able to communicate with the remote online proctor. Most importantly, test takers will be required to complete a series of security protocols before, during, and after the examination.

"Over the last two years, our focus has been on updating our examinations to keep pace with the changing market trends,” said Morris Fucarino, CDT, NBC Vice Chair. “In 2017, we launched revised job task outlines, updated examination references, reviewed and rewrote examination questions and revised practical examinations. Now, our goal is to focus on how we can deliver these examinations to make them more convenient, while still maintaining the integrity of the process.”

National Dentex Labs and Carbon Partner to Implement a 3D Manufacturing Solution Across NDX Labs in the US

Posted on Friday, June 15, 2018

National Dentex Labs (NDX), the largest network of dental labs by revenue in the US, and Carbon, a Silicon Valley-based digital 3D manufacturing company, today announced a multi-year agreement to help NDX’s labs across the country implement Carbon’s complete dental solution. The agreement recently commenced with Carbon M2 printers being placed in NDX labs in 2018 and will continue to scale through 2019.

NDX relies on 3D printing technology to fabricate models, casting, and a variety of implant guides. However, the increasing demand for these items has led the organization to seek a solution that can not only meet this growth in efficiency, accuracy, and esthetics, but also provides scalability, fleet management across the install base in disparate locations, and the ability to report data and analytics that cater to solution-based needs.

“3D printing has become integral to the dental industry and NDX is at the forefront of using this innovative technology, so we have deep experience with the many printer technologies on the market,” said Tom Daulton, CEO of National Dentex Labs. “As we evaluated the options, we needed a solution and a partner that could scale with us while offering efficiencies, quality parts, and excellent support and service.”

“We are thrilled to partner with NDX, and honored that they’ve selected Carbon’s complete dental solution for their labs,” said Dr. Joseph DeSimone, Co-founder and CEO of Carbon. “Dental is an industry that shows the most promise for using digital fabrication for production at scale, particularly given its rigorous requirements of high throughput, accuracy of prints, fast turnaround, constant uptime and very responsive service. At Carbon, we engage closely with each of our customers to understand their individual requirements, and deliver the one-to-one support and services they need to accelerate their business and create amazing experiences for their customers. We’re there with them at every step of the process.”

Carbon offers a revolutionary alternative to 3D printing, fusing light and oxygen to rapidly produce high-quality, end-use products from a pool of resin. Its proprietary Digital Light SynthesisTM (DLS) technology, robust and reliable 3D printers, and broad portfolio of materials deliver a complete solution for all dental production needs. Carbon’s solution significantly improves efficiency and accuracy, reduces time from design to manufacture, and provides important features such as part traceability and serialization through next-gen software design tools. With Carbon, everything is digitally traceable, down to a unique ID that can automatically be engraved or embossed on any part. This unique ID can be used to identify the digital historical record of the part, including identifying the specific printer, resin, and even post-processing protocols that were involved in making that part. This capability is particularly valuable for highly regulated industries like dental, where the FDA will increasingly require part-specific data to ensure product performance and patient safety.

Further, Carbon’s unique subscription-based model closely aligns it to its customers’ businesses – with every-six-weeks software updates, continuous education and training programs, and one-to-one customer service and support helping ensure the business is always up and running for optimal customer experiences and capabilities.

Water Fluoridation Confirmed to Prevent Dental Decay in US Children And Adolescents

Posted on Thursday, June 14, 2018

The fluoridation of America’s drinking water was among the great public health achievements of the twentieth century but there is a scarcity of studies from the last three decades investigating the impact of water fluoridation on dental health in the U.S. population. A recent study “Water fluoridation and dental caries in U.S. children and adolescents,” published in the Journal of Dental Research, evaluated associations between the availability of community water fluoridation and dental caries (decay) experience in U.S. child and adolescent populations.

In this large study, county-level estimates of the percentage of population with community water fluoridation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 's Water Fluoridation Reporting System were merged with dental examination data from 10 years of National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (1999-2004 and 2011-2014).

The analysis showed that U.S. children and adolescents with greater access to fluoridated drinking water were less likely to experience dental caries. Counties in which over 75% of the population had access to community water fluoridation saw a 30% reduction in dental caries experience in the primary dentition, and a 12% reduction in dental caries experience in the permanent dentition, compared to counties in which less than 75% had access to community water fluoridation.

The findings are consistent with evidence from the last half-century showing that community water fluoridation continues to provide a substantial dental health benefit for U.S. children and adolescents. The current study boosts the evidence by showing that the benefit is most pronounced early in life, in the primary teeth of 2-8 year olds.

“This study confirms previously reported findings and provides additional evidence in support of water fluoridation as a core public health intervention promoting oral health,” said Maria Ryan, President of the American Association for Dental Research. “AADR supports community water fluoridation as a safe and effective, evidence-based intervention for the prevention of dental caries and this report further adds to that evidence base.”

Authors of the study “Water fluoridation and dental caries in U.S. children and adolescents” are Gary Slade and Anne Sanders from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., USA, William Grider, U.S. Census Bureau, Suitland, Md., USA and William Maas, Dental Public Health Consultant, North Bethesda, Md., USA.
