Straumann Becomes a Strategic Investor in Dental Monitoring

Posted on Thursday, April 12, 2018

The two companies have signed an agreement that provides Straumann with global distribution rights to DM's technology in return for an injection of capital and a minor stake in DM. Straumann will integrate DM's technology into its portfolio of orthodontic and digital solutions and the two companies will collaborate to develop further applications for artificial intelligence in the dental field. DM will continue to support and sell to orthodontic customers through its own network.

Remote Monitoring - Transforming orthodontics

DM is the first company to enable orthodontists and dentists to remotely monitor treatment progress in their patients. Together with the introduction of virtual check-ups to supplement chairside appointments, this offers a significant improvement to patient care. After downloading the DM application on their smartphones, patients use the proprietary DM self-scanning process, usually on a weekly basis from the comfort and convenience of their home. DM's proprietary artificial intelligence technology extracts information from the collected data and combines it with the digital impression data acquired when treatment began.

The software uses highly accurate clinical measurement tools and photo-simulations that record actual tooth movement over the course of treatment and monitors any relapse during the post-treatment retention phase. The system communicates with the orthodontist whenever necessary or required, allowing for timely intervention and adjustments that make the treatment more efficient. The DM web-based dashboard allows the orthodontist to communicate effortlessly with the patient, to support compliance and motivation.

Artificial Intelligence ("AI") - next generation of dental products

The use of machine-learning algorithms to transform medicine and dentistry is an important technological innovation to improve treatment outcomes and patient engagement.

DM's engineering team based in Paris, has spent the last 4 years developing the DM proprietary technology to make remote monitoring a reality. The company has invested millions of dollars gathering and tagging clinically relevant data to enable the development of highly accurate artificial intelligence algorithms. Today its technology can detect over 170 different clinical situations from images taken by patients using their smartphones. These results are constantly clinically validated by DM's panel of orthodontists, prior to being communicated back to the treating orthodontist or dentist. In just a few years, DM has validated nearly 2 million clinical records from patients and the number is growing exponentially.

Integrating DM technologies into other dental products

DM's artificial intelligence technology will support Straumann's orthodontic and intraoral scanning businesses and could be extended to applications in implant and preventative dentistry. A significant part of Straumann's investment will be used to fund these developments and the Group will be represented in DM's Strategic Management and Development Board.

Marco Gadola, CEO of Straumann Group

"Enabling dentists to offer patients a reliable, easy-to-use mobile application for checking their teeth and treatment progress will change dentistry. Our investment in DM provides us with a proven orthodontics tracking system, which is commercially-available in addition to securing a partner with the expertise to develop further artificial intelligence solutions in our field".

Philippe Salah, CEO of Dental Monitoring

"In 2017, DM commenced a search for a strategic investor in the dental industry to provide funding and access to large global dental markets and to accompany us beyond our current position in orthodontic monitoring. Straumann is an ideal partner for many reasons: they are a truly global company and are investing significantly in digital dentistry as a core business. They are renowned for clinical excellence and brand leadership and share our passion for pioneering innovation and entrepreneurism. With their scientific heritage and strength in digital, they are our partner of choice for developing and establishing remote monitoring coupled with AI as the new standard of care".

Other DM Investors

In March 2018, DM completed a US$9.5m investment round with over 50 individual investors - mainly orthodontists who see the opportunity that DM has to transform not only orthodontics but also dentistry. DM is also backed by Naxicap Partners, one of France's largest private equity and venture capital firms who were DM's first external investors in 2016. The remainder of the shares are held by the founders and employees.

3Shape TRIOS Intraoral Scanner Now Integrated with SomnoMed Sleep Solutions

Posted on Wednesday, April 11, 2018

With just a click, dental and sleep professionals can now use their 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanner to cloud-send a patient’s digital impressions directly to SomnoMed for the manufacture of its sleep and bruxism devices.

Patients are intraorally-scanned with 3Shape TRIOS. The doctor then simply selects SomnoMed from the list of integrated solution providers on the TRIOS Communicate™ cloud and sends the scans instantly to SomnoMed.

SomnoMed uses the TRIOS intraoral scans to CAD/CAM design and manufacture their sleep apnea and bruxism devices. This creates a completely digital workflow that simplifies the front-end steps of the device manufacturing process; ensures precision and predictability in production and delivers cases back to dentists more rapidly.

The fast turnaround means getting patients into therapy faster. In addition to making the entire fitting procedure more comfortable due to TRIOS’ accuracy, speed, image quality, and ease of use.

Using 3Shape TRIOS for digital impressions also means patients no longer need to go through old fashioned, gag-inducing, gooey analogue impression-taking when getting fitted for a device.

“3Shape is very excited to work with SomnoMed to create a digital workflow that makes sleep device manufacturing workflow more efficient as well as one that gets patients into therapy faster with a better experience,” says Allan Hyldal, Vice President of 3Shape Orthodontics. “3Shape TRIOS award-winning technology along with our continually-growing number of integrations, are really opening the doors to the widest selection of treatment-options for dental and sleep professionals and their patients.”

“SomnoMed is pleased to have validated TRIOS through rigorous controlled patient trials across multiple regions and users, says Christopher Bedford, Vice President of Research and Development – SomnoMed.” The trial results have been great, clinicians enjoy faster turn-around times, easier appliance issuances, clearer and more objective technical communication and with fewer return visits by their patients throughout the critical acclimatization phase of treatment. Patients describe simpler, faster and more pleasant chairside experiences with less challenges throughout the critically important bite registration phase.”

exocad releases ChairsideCAD

Posted on Tuesday, April 10, 2018

exocad recently announced the availability of its new ChairsideCAD software solution for the design of same-day restorations in the dental practice.

ChairsideCAD is the first complete open-architecture CAD/CAM software platform for single-visit dentistry. The chairside workflow is streamlined, easy to learn and optimized for usage in the practice, including a step-by-step guide through the design process. It's based on the same proven technology as exocad's 'best-of-breed' lab software, renowned for its reliability and robust features. In just a few steps, exocad ChairsideCAD creates highly esthetic proposals with minimal post processing.

"What makes ChairsideCAD unique is the integration with open-architecture scanners, milling machines, and printers", says Maik Gerth, CTO of exocad. "Our approach guards against future obsolescence by assuring access to the latest, most innovative equipment from multiple vendors in the open market" according to Mr. Gerth. He points out that "if you want to make changes to your workflow, equipment, or services, exocad adapts to your practice. The common thread is exocad's open-architecture platform that enables you to integrate hardware and materials, without limiting your choices to a single-vendor model."

Same day restorations are a growing part of dentistry. Tillmann Steinbrecher, exocad CEO, points out that "patients request it, and meeting this demand results in new challenges for dentists and labs alike. Our goal is to provide technology that helps both clinicians and lab technicians take maximum advantage of digital processes - as collaborators, not competitors." exocad ChairsideCAD features dentalshare, an on-line collaboration platform providing secure communication and near real-time data transfer between dental professionals. "We enable lab technicians to provide additional digital services to their clients, as many steps of the digital process can also be performed by a partner lab" says Mr. Steinbrecher.

Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program Receives 2018 William J. Gies Award

Posted on Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Henry Schein, Inc. joined the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity (AO) to announce that the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program has received a William J. Gies Award (the Gies Awards) for Vision, Innovation and Achievement for its mission to provide free oral health care to Holocaust survivors living in poverty across North America.

R. Bruce Donoff, D.M.D., M.D., Dean, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, presented the program with the 2018 Gies Award for Achievement – Public or Private Partner during the 11th Annual Gies Awards Gala held recently in Orlando, Florida. The award was accepted by the program's co-founders, Avi Wurman, D.D.S., AO Past International President and Program Co-Chair; and Allison Neale, Director, Public Policy, Henry Schein, In

The Gies Awards—an initiative of the ADEAGies Foundation®, a philanthropic organization dedicated to enhancing the oral health of the public by funding programs that support innovations in dental education, research, leadership and recognition—honor people and organizations that exemplify the highest standards in oral health and dental education. Henry Schein, Inc. was previously recognized with the Gies Award for Achievement – Public or Private Partner in 2014, and remains the only company to receive an award since the event's inception in 2007.

The Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program was launched in November 2014 in response to the White House's call to action to help Holocaust survivors age with dignity and respect. Since its inception, it has provided free dental care to nearly 1,000 Holocaust survivors in the U.S. and Canada. The program fills a critical need for many of the 100,000 Holocaust survivors living in the U.S., one third of whom live in poverty. Survivors often have special oral health needs, as many suffered from prolonged nutritional deprivation and had little to no dental care access as children during World War II.

Care recipients are identified by the network of Jewish Family and Children's Service agencies or other identified partner organizations, as well as people of any faith who were victims of Nazi persecution and meet the program's other eligibility requirements. In addition to financial need, patient participation is prioritized by three critical factors: the elimination of pain, restoration of function, and lack of dental coverage. Participating clinicians determine each patient's scope of care.

"We at Alpha Omega are honored to stand with our partners at Henry Schein and accept this award," Dr. Wurman said. "It is truly our privilege to work with these incredible survivors and help restore their ability to eat without pain and smile with confidence. This program exemplifies Alpha Omega's values of generosity and kindness and we look forward to working closely with this most deserving population for years to come."

AO chapters that participate in the program include those in Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Cincinnati; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Detroit; Los Angeles; Milwaukee; New York City; the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area; Philadelphia; Phoenix; San Francisco; Seattle; the greater Washington, DC, area; and West Hartford, Connecticut in the U.S., and Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg in Canada. The program also operates at three U.S.-based dental schools: Temple University –

"We are honored that the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program has been presented with the 2018 Gies Award for Achievement – Public or Private Partner," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "This highly innovative program exemplifies the power of collaboration across sectors—from the more than 475 AO dentists who volunteer their services to the dental schools, social service agencies, corporate partners, and philanthropic donors who are critical to the program's success. This program has had a profound impact on the lives of nearly 1,000 Holocaust survivors, as well as all of the partners who are honored to contribute to their care. Together we are 'helping health happen'."

NADL Issues News Alert on Proposed Tariff

Posted on Monday, April 9, 2018

The National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL) issued a news alert regarding proposed tariffs on imported dental laboratory restorations.

The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed imposing an additional duty or 25% on a list of products from China, including dentures, crowns, abutments, implants, fixed bridges, temporary inlays, onlays, and veneers. The duty is levied at the time of import and is paid by the importer of record.

If the tariff goes into effect, the NADL says it likely would not be until mid-June or early July. The NADL's Board of Directors plans to meet later this month to discuss the issue.
