Alexandria, Va., USA – The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have just released the sixth clinical supplement to the Journal of Dental Research (JDR). This clinical supplement encompasses all areas of clinical research in the dental, oral and craniofacial sciences.

As the second clinical supplement to be published this year, this sixth supplement brings together emerging contributions in discovery and translational science to clinical application for the healthcare community. This issue is dedicated to clinical and translational research, which is covered through a wide range of topics including the promises and pitfalls in the use of "Big Data" for clinical research, the use of a computerized tool to manage dental anxiety, periodontal bacteria and prevalent prediabetes, and more.

This clinical supplement also includes a companion podcast for two manuscripts: “3D-printed Bioresorbable Scaffold for Periodontal Repair” and “3D Bioprinting for Regenerative Dentistry and Craniofacial Tissue Engineering.” In this podcast, Drs. Scott Hollister and Luiz Bertassoni are interviewed by Associate Editor Dana Graves on different approaches to 3D printing, challenges, regulation and clinical application.

The new journal will emphasize translation of research into healthcare delivery systems at the individual patient, clinical practice and community levels. OSAP Kicks Off Dental Infection Control Awareness Month with Safest Dental Visit

Posted on Thursday, August 20, 2015

Annapolis, MD: August 20, 2015-The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) is launching a major multi-year collaborative educational program in conjunction with National Dental Infection Control Awareness Month (NDICAM). OSAP’s Safest Dental Visit™ program is a new initiative designed to promote an increased commitment to infection control and safety. Clinicians, educators, speakers and consultants, product manufacturers and distributors, and others interested in patient safety are collaborating to help ensure that every patient visit is the safest dental visit. The launch coincides with NDICAM, a month-long awareness campaign during September designed to increase focus on dental infection control and safety, and to help clinicians engage with patients on this important topic. A wide variety of support materials are available on the OSAP website at www.osap.org.

The dental team plays a pivotal role in the program. The dental office is where clinicians address new and emerging threats and increasingly complex policies and guidelines. It’s also where patients express concern (or remain silent but worry) about their safety. This new OSAP campaign will help dental practices educate and train staff, promote a safe and professional environment, increase patient confidence and loyalty, attract new patients, and enhance the overall image of the practice.

An important element of the Safest Dental Visit program is the pledge. The Safest Dental Visit pledge outlines critical guidelines and practices to help ensure the safety of every patient. The campaign supports dental practices to make this pledge by providing information, education, and regular reminders to engage staff in infection prevention and safety.

Although the goal is for all dental practices to participate, OSAP members gain access to the Safest Dental Visit Tool Kit, a set of curated materials that guide the practice through establishing a culture of safety, maximizing the role of the infection control coordinator, understanding OSHA requirements and CDC guidelines, and taking full advantage of OSAP membership.

Dental product manufacturers and distributors are participating by promoting OSAP membership and the Safest Dental Visit program, helping support the program through in-kind services or donations raised through sales, or offering OSAP memberships for specific product purchases.

Dental practitioners and other interested parties are encouraged to check the website frequently or join OSAP to be kept up-to-date on new resources and educational opportunities as they are made available.

Celebrating over 30 years of service to the worldwide dentalcommunity, OSAP is a growing community of clinicians, educators, students, policy-makers, and industry representatives who advocate for safe and infection-free deliveryof oral healthcare. OSAP focuses on strategies to improve compliance with safe practices and on building a strong network of recognized infection control experts. OSAP offers an extensive online collection of resources, publications, FAQs, checklists and toolkits to help dental professionals ensure that every visit is The Safest Dental Visit™ for patients and the dental team. Henry Schein Launches 2015 Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Communities Program

Posted on Thursday, August 20, 2015

MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, announced today the launch of its 2015 Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Communities (HLHC) program, a flagship initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the Company's global corporate social responsibility program.

In partnership with the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), the HLHC program enhances access to health care, prevention, and wellness for underserved communities by providing free medical and dental screenings at fun and engaging community events around the country.

This year, the program expects to serve approximately 8,700 children and their caregivers throughout the United States with free medical and dental services at 14 health fair events. Nine years ago, Henry Schein founded the HLHC program, which typically occurs in the late summer and fall.

Each health fair supported by HLHC receives a $5,000 in-kind donation and a $5,000 cash grant through the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization that works to enhance access to care globally.  Since HLHC's inception, more than $700,000 in supplies and financial assistance have been donated to support nearly 80 health fair events.  According to a NACHC study published in 2014, community health centers play a key role in the nation's health care system by providing continuous primary and preventive care, reducing the risk of new health care problems and saving the health care system $24 billion a year.

"Henry Schein recognizes the vital role of community health centers nationwide and the excellent care they offer those who would otherwise go without," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "The community health center model of care, which promotes high quality, affordable health care, aligns with our Company's strong commitment to help improve the health of all Americans. With the generous support of our supplier partners, our Team Schein Member volunteers, and our local community health center organization partners, we are collectively 'helping health happen' for thousands of children and their caregivers every year."

HLHC is annually co-sponsored by state and local community health organizations and supported by Henry Schein's supplier partners. At each HLHC event, local physicians, nurses, dentists and community volunteers screen for five diseases – hypertension, asthma, diabetes, obesity and poor oral health – and associated risk factors that commonly affect children. In addition, participating children and their caregivers receive educational materials about ways to prevent and treat these problems, as well as assistance in finding a local community health center where they may receive health care on a regular basis. The program seeks to create a "Health Home" for participating children, so that they have a place to receive ongoing care throughout the year.

About the National Association of Community Health Centers

The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) was founded in 1971. Its mission is to promote the provision of high quality, comprehensive and affordable health care that is coordinated, culturally and linguistically competent, and community directed for all medically underserved populations. 32nd Annual AACD Scientific Session: Not the Same Old Dental Meeting

Posted on Tuesday, August 18, 2015

MADISON, Wis. (8/28/15) — Every year the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Professional Education Committee (PEC) pushes the envelope when it comes to offering dental professionals the very best in comprehensive cosmetic dentistry education at the Annual AACD conference. This year, the PEC has torn the envelope up, thrown it out the window, and opted for a completely reimagined structure for delivering that world-class education.

The conference’s three daily themes: Design, Implementation, and Realization are more than just catch phrases – they are a scaffolding on which the entire conference is structured. According to Professional Education Committee Chair, Robert Ritter, DMD, “The themes were selected because they can help guide the dentist and laboratory technician in the overall process of framing the patient for a new smile.” Design, Implementation, and Realization will be providing a unified structure for the conference; they represent a process that is sequential and cumulative, so each day will build on the knowledge gained the previous day.

The educators, and the topics they address, will follow that path from Design on day one, to Implementation on day two, and finally Realization on day three. Some of the featured presenters will include Bill Robbins, DDS and David Sarver, DMD on day one; Michael Pikos, DDS, and Andrea Ricci, DMD on day two; and Markus Blatz, DMD, Gerard Chiche, DDS, and John Kois, DMD on day three.

All of the courses offered at AACD 2016 are intended to elevate the clinical skills of all conference attendees—the entire dental team—but the AACD will also offer the Accreditation track courses for those attendees who seek to differentiate themselves at a level of excellence only achieved by the most dedicated and passionate dental professionals. Attendees can even begin the process of AACD Accreditation by taking the written exam in Toronto.

This innovative conference concept couldn’t have a more fitting background than the city of Toronto. Home to more than 4.7 million people, Toronto is the cultural, entertainment, and financial capital of Canada. Recently awarded the Best in Travel 2015 epithet by Lonely Planet and selected as a Hot Destination for 2015 by Orbitz, Toronto boasts truly world class shopping, dining, and entertainment.

AACD 2016 attendees will certainly be on the pulse of this vibrant city. The convention location, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, is neighbor to the CN Tower, and in addition to the surface level options for dining, shopping, and entertainment, there are 30 km of underground shopping options along PATH, the city’s downtown underground pedestrian walkway.

Between the world class education, industry related shopping in the exhibit hall, and AACD social events, attendees may want to plan on extending their visit to Toronto to ensure plenty of time to explore the this buzzing metropolis.

One final aspect of this conference that may be new to some attendees is the need to use a passport to travel. Conference goers will want to apply for or renew their passport well in advance to ensure smooth travels to Toronto.

Henry Schein Receives Hispanic Dental Association Corporate Award

Posted on Tuesday, August 18, 2015

MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, announced today that it has been selected as the recipient of the Corporate Award by the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA). The HDA is a national, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization comprised of oral health professionals and students dedicated to promoting and improving the oral health of the Hispanic community and providing advocacy for Hispanic oral health professionals across the United States.

The Company was recognized for its decades of support of numerous initiatives to increase diversity and cultural competency in the oral health professions for the U.S. and global Hispanic communities, as well as for its commitment to promote access to care and health care equity worldwide. Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, accepted the honor at the HDA's 25th Annual Conference held last week in San Antonio, Texas.

"It is an honor to accept this prestigious recognition by the HDA, an organization whose remarkable quarter century of success in advancing oral health here in the United States and globally has been an inspiration," said Mr. Bergman. "Henry Schein shares the HDA's strong commitment to promote greater awareness of oral health issues facing the Hispanic population, to advocate for greater Hispanic representation in the oral health professions, and to support the continuing education of Hispanic dental professionals. The HDA has been at the vanguard of eliminating oral health disparities in the Hispanic community, and Henry Schein is proud to have been its partner for the past 25 years, most recently through our support of the HDA leadership program for the New York City Tri-State area."

Henry Schein has a long history of supporting programs, professional associations, non-profit organizations and initiatives dedicated to promoting diversity in the dental profession and access to care.

Earlier this year, Henry Schein was named the Corporation of the Year by the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives, and through Henry Schein Cares, the Company's global corporate social responsibility program, the Company has sponsored dozens of oral health professionals from around the world to participate in the Senior Dental Leaders Program.

"Spearheaded by the outstanding leadership of Mr. Bergman, Henry Schein has helped make important strides to expand the Hispanic community's access to health care services and enhance culturally-competent oral health care education and delivery of care," said Dr. Amarilis Jacobo, President-elect of the Hispanic Dental Association. "Despite the fact that Hispanics represent more than 53 million people in the United States – one out of every six people – this segment of the U.S. population is underrepresented in the medical and dental professions, allied health fields and academia. With Henry Schein's longstanding support, our organization has been better able to encourage the entry of Hispanics into the oral health professions, which advances the oral health and overall health of the ever-growing Hispanic community."
