ACTEON North America Wins Two 2015 Pride Institute Best in Class Technology Awards

Posted on Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Now in its seventh year, the Pride Institute’s “Best of Class” Technology Award continues unparalleled in its integrity and approach to recognizing excellence in dental innovation. In 2015, SoproCARE and SoproLIFE from ACTEON are two of those lauded as “Best of Class.”

“To be honored as ‘Best of Class’ is a sign that a product has revolutionized, simplified or advanced its category in a distinctive way,” said Dr. Lou Shuman, ‘Best of Class’ founder. “The manufacturers represented here are driving the conversation for how dental practices will operate today and in the future. The foundation for our success in bringing attention to these products has always been our formula: technology leadership in dentistry, unbiased, and not for profit.”

“Best of Class” honorees are chosen by a panel comprised of leading voices in dental technology, who come together each year to discuss, debate and decide what products merit recognition. All technology categories are considered, but if there is no clear differentiator that sets a product apart in its category, then no winner is selected. Panelists who receive compensation from dental companies are prevented from voting in that company’s category. Over the years, the panel has developed a rapport that makes space for important conversations about value of different innovations and how evolving categories become more or less valuable to the general dentist. The spirited debate that follows results in a variety of products — obscure and well-known, basic and aspirational — being honored.

“Technology decisions can be expensive and confusing for many doctors. Our job as ‘Best of Class’ panelists is to eat, sleep, live, breath and use technology in our general practices in real, everyday dentistry. We also have a chance to show and discuss these products with dental students and colleagues,” said Dr. John Flucke, writer, speaker and Technology Editor for Dental Products Report. “This allows us to provide recommendations that a doctor and staff can rely on to make informed decisions regarding their technology purchases.”

The panel consists of five dentists with significant knowledge of and experience in dental technology, including Dr. Shuman; Dr. Flucke; Paul Feuerstein, DMD, writer, speaker and Technology Editor for Dentistry Today ; Marty Jablow, DMD, technology writer and consultant for Dr. BiCuspid; and Parag Kachalia, DDS, Vice-Chair of Preclinical Education, Research and Technology, University of Pacific School of Dentistry.

Tim Long, VP/COO for ACTEON North America said, “This is a very prestigious award for the dental industry and to win it with both the SoproCARE and SoproLIFE for a second time is truly an honor. We are thrilled to be recognized for great technology that helps clinicians’ practices and patients every day.”

The Pride Institute “Best of Class” Technology awards were launched in 2009 as a new concept to provide an unbiased, non-profit assessment of available technologies in the dental space. Through print and digital media coverage, the “Best of Class” message reaches the community of 150,000 dentists through multiple touch points—in print and online—educating them about the products. Honoree participation in the “Tech Expo” at the American Dental Association’s Annual Meeting offers face-to-face interaction with the companies as well as technology-centered education provided by members of the panel as well as the esteemed consultants of Pride Institute. Courses at last year’s 2014 meeting sold out. This year’s event will be held November 5-10 in Washington, DC.

CDC, OSAP, AGD Announce Hepatitis C Webinar

Posted on Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Annapolis, MD:July 22, 2015 -The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), the advocate for The Safest Dental Visit™, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), is presenting a webinar on the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) on August 19, 12-1:30 pm CDT. The goal of the webinar is to bring dental teams up to date with HCV and new HCV therapies. HCV can survive in the environment for 16 hours on a dry surface and can be detected in saliva. It is important that clinicians understand the disease, know how to identify it, and understand how to follow-up for HCV and other bloodborne pathogens after a needlestick injury.

The HCV webinar will give dental health care providers up-to-date information on the natural history and epidemiology of HCV, new HCV therapies, recent screening guidelines from CDC, surveillance for HCV, healthcare-related hepatitis infections and prevention options, and recommendations for needlestick injury response.

The webinar is being presented by Anne Moorman, BSN, MPH. Ms. Moorman is an epidemiologist in the Division of Viral Hepatitis at CDC. Currently, she is one of the division staff leading the investigation of healthcare-associated hepatitis infections and has helped develop current guidance on these investigations in partnership with state public health departments and colleagues in CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. She has contributed to more than 70 scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals during her two decades at CDC, including 12 recent articles describing healthcare-associated hepatitis transmissions and outbreaks.

OHA to Host Collaborative Learning Conference with Help from Henry Schein Cares Foundation Grant

Posted on Tuesday, July 21, 2015

CHICAGO, July 21 — Oral Health America (OHA) encourages collaborative learning among its Smiles Across America® (SAA) Program Partners across the country who provide oral healthcare and education to children in school-based and school-linked settings. Thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, 60 SAA partners will be able to gather together during OHA’s bi-annual National Share and Learn Conference in Philadelphia this summer.

“Our SAA Program Partners tell us on a consistent basis how much they benefit from learning from each other,” said OHA President and CEO Beth Truett. “These opportunities to connect SAA partners with one another are part of the value-added technical assistance that OHA offers to the teams who are addressing the needs of some of America’s most vulnerable children every day. We are grateful to the Henry Schein Cares Foundation for their support of our program and mission.”

SAA Program Partner Kids Smiles will cohost the conference, with a goal to positively impact the health and education of low-income children who bear 80 percent of the disease burden for dental caries. SAA Program Partners from across the country will gather to learn about the process of human centered design to better understand the issues, communities and opportunities for improving oral health services provided in school-based and school-linked settings.

“Henry Schein is proud to support OHA’s Share and Learn conference, which brings together a nationwide force of healthcare professionals committed to improving the oral health of at-risk school children,” said Steve Kess, President of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. “We share OHA’s commitment to expanding access to care for underserved populations and improving lives through increased education and awareness of the importance of good oral health and look forward to continuing our work together.”

OHA launched SAA in 2004 to provide oral disease prevention services to children who are uninsured or underinsured due to issues of poverty. During the 2014-2015 school year, OHA’s network of 304 SAA Program Partners reached more than 460,000 children in 47 states with services including dental sealants, fluoride varnish and family education. $500,000 Grant to Give Away 1,000 Amalgam Separators to Dentists

Posted on Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB)

For a limited time, 1,000 US dentists can receive a free ISO-certified ECO II amalgam separator courtesy of a grant sponsored by PureLife Dental, a health- and environmentally-focused dental distributor. PureLife’s grant is timely, as it coincides with the EPA’s pending decision that would require all dentists to control mercury discharges by installing an amalgam separator as early as 2016.

The adverse effects of mercury on human and environmental health has been a hot topic recently. In fact, the EPA estimates that 50% of the mercury pollution in our wastewaters is attributed to dental amalgam. Fortunately, dentists can virtually eliminate their contribution to this problem by installing anamalgam separator. PureLife’s grant goes one step further to help eliminate the financial barriers of owning a separator, especially for smaller practices.

“I think there is a common misconception that going green is either too costly or requires a lot of time and effort. However, many dentists are not aware of how low-maintenance amalgam separators really are and how big a difference they can make simply by installing one in their office,” said PureLife CEO, Rodney Hanoon. “The purpose of the Make a Difference Grant is to simultaneously educate dentists and make it as easy as possible for them to responsibly dispose of amalgam waste.”

Through the Make a Difference Grant, PureLife continues its commitment of giving back to the dental community and the planet alike. Dental offices can take part in the grant and receive a free ECO II amalgam separator by contacting PureLife toll-free at 877-777-3303 x4 or online athttps://www.PureLifeDental.com/Grant.

Tom's of Maine Invites the Public to Help Invest $1 Million in Grassroots Community Projects

Posted on Friday, July 17, 2015

KENNEBUNK, MaineJuly 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- If you could help build a better community with just one change, what would you do? Create an adventure program for kids in need? Build a community garden for a food pantry? Bring animals to the homebound? Tom's of Maine is asking Americans in every state to share how they would help their communities as part of its annual 50 States for Good giving program, and will randomly choose 51 entrants to select a local nonprofit to receive a $20,000 donation from Tom's ofMaine.

This year, the company is awarding more funding than ever – more than $1 million in total – with $20,000 going to a nonprofit organization in every state and Washington, D.C.

Knowing that not everyone has money to support the many causes they care about, Tom's of Maine structured its program to let people share their #OneWayToHelp for a chance to secure funding for important community projects.  People simply share in a few words what they would do to help their community on Twitter or Instagram using #OneWayToHelp #entry and their state hashtag (e.g. #NY, #CA).  Interested participants can also enter online at www.50StatesforGood.com. One entry from every state and Washington, D.C. will be randomly chosen and that winner can give the funding to their favorite cause.

"This year, we want to make it easier than ever for anyone in the community to advance the causes they care most about – right where they live, work and play," said Susan Dewhirst, goodness programs manager at Tom's of Maine. "You simply tell us what local issues matter to you. No need to know a specific nonprofit, just share one way you would like to help your community. If you're chosen, we'll help you find a nonprofit that connects to your cause or you can choose one you already love."

To date, the Tom's of Maine 50 States for Good program has funded more than 100 grassroots nonprofits with over $1.1 million and celebrated the people who empower and help their neighbors in creative and inspiring ways – from teaching children sustainable farming, to enhancing local libraries, providing shelter and food for the homeless and caring for animals, as well as many other initiatives.

Tom's of Maine gives 10% of its profits back to helping people and the planet. Employees are encouraged to give 5% of paid time to volunteer and this year marks the company's 45th anniversary.  Additional information and terms and conditions are available atwww.50StatesforGood.com.
