Nobel Biocare's New Cement-Free Posterior Solution

Posted on Tuesday, March 17, 2015

Cologne, Germany, March 10, 2015 – At the International Dental Show (IDS), March 10-14, Nobel Biocare is unveiling a new complete, cement-free treatment concept developed to address the most common challenges faced when restoring molar teeth. The solution features a choice of new wide-platform implants and restorative options designed specifically for the posterior region. Also being launched at IDS is an entire new parallel-walled implant system, NobelParallel Conical Connection (CC).

The launches kick off a year-long celebration of all the innovations that led the company to be “First for 50 years”, beginning with the first titanium dental implant treatment in 1965. In another dental-industry first, visitors to Nobel Biocare’s booth at IDS can experience the new posterior solution using pioneering virtual reality technology.

Choice of two new wide-platform implants engineered for the posterior region

Nobel Biocare’s new complete posterior solution incorporates new Ø 5.5 mm wide-platform (WP) implant options. Clinicians can choose from the NobelParallel CC WP and new NobelActive WP, both designed for optimized emergence profiles for large molar crowns. Each is intended to shorten time-to-teeth by enabling Immediate Function whenever possible. With the new WP option, both NobelActive and NobelParallel CC are now available in a shorter 7 mm length to avoid anatomical structures such as nerves.

New cement-free, full-contour implant crown with angulated screw channel for restoring molar teeth

The new NobelProcera FCZ (full-contour zirconia) Implant Crown is the key restorative component in the new complete posterior solution. Screw-retained, made in monolithic zirconia, and with the option to angulate the screw channel, it combines remarkable strength with restorative flexibility.

As a completely cement-free solution, the FCZ Implant Crown avoids the risks associated with cement excess. Even the titanium adapter is mechanically retained. Its strength ensures predictability even under the high occlusal forces of the posterior, which makes it ideal for use in the molar region. As no veneering is required, it also eliminates the risk of veneer chipping. Improved access with an angulated screw channel (ASC) combined with the superior pick-up function offered by the unique Omnigrip tooling makes it easier to restore in the posterior region. The FCZ Implant Crown comes in eight shades, with each color applied throughout the material.

Furthermore, Nobel Biocare has also launched new PEEK Healing and PEEK Temporary Abutments that are anatomically shaped to match the molar contours. As the PEEK abutments come ready-shaped for an optimized emergence profile, fewer adjustments are needed. This can simplify treatment and reduce costly chair time.

50 years’ experience in parallel-walled implants culminates in new NobelParallel Conical Connection (CC)

The new NobelParallel CC benefits from 50 years of research and innovation at Nobel Biocare and represents an evolution of the greatest features of the successful Brånemark and NobelSpeedy implant systems. NobelParallel CC combines a parallel-walled implant body with an advanced internal conical connection and offers extraordinary flexibility. It is engineered for use in all bone qualities and for a broad range of indications. (The wide-platform version is part of Nobel Biocare’s new complete posterior solution.) Both experienced clinicians and those new to implantology will appreciate the straightforward surgical protocol.

Richard Laube, Nobel Biocare CEO, said: “This year we are marking fifty years since the late Per-Ingvar Brånemark placed the very first titanium dental implants. Nobel Biocare is proud to continue playing an important role in developing original treatment concepts to help restore quality of life for millions of patients. The innovations featured in our new complete posterior solution build on our heritage by further helping dental professionals to treat more patients better.”

And the Orkos Award for Successful Gum Disease Treatment Goes to...

Posted on Friday, March 13, 2015

St Louis, MO – March 3, 2015– Dr. Greg Gist of Southlake, Texas is the latest recipient of the Orkos Award. Perio Protect presented Dr. Gist the award for his case study that resulted in successful long-term treatment of a patient with gum disease.

As the economy improves, patients are returning to their dentists. Many of these patients are finding that the health of their gums has declined. The patient in Dr. Gist’s case study resumed treatment after a four year absence. A comprehensive exam revealed generalized periodontitis, moderate bone loss and gum recession. A routine probing (a measuring the pockets between teeth and gums) indicated that the patient’s pockets were 4-6mm deep (3mm or less being healthy) and that bleeding during the exam was heavy. This scenario is all too common for patients who have been avoiding professional dental care due to the recession.

Following the exam on January 28, 2013, Dr. Gist began the first of four debridement and scaling procedures (deep cleaning that reaches below the gum line). After mechanical therapy, Dr. Gist delivered Perio Trays®, prescription, customized periodontal trays worn by patients to hold medication in periodontal pockets to kill the bacteria responsible for gum disease and gum infections. The patient was advised to wear his Perio Trays® twice a day for 10 minutes to deliver 1.7% hydrogen peroxide gel and 3 drops of an antibiotic.

At the end of March, approximately 2 months after the initial visit, the patient exhibited no bleeding on probing and over 90% of his pocket measured healthy depths. A periodontal maintenance visit on June 26, 2013 confirmed additional improvements. At the patient’s most recent dental appointment on September 9, 2014, inflammation remained under control. Gums did not bleed. All periodontal pockets remained at healthy depths. Gum recession had decreased.

Dr. Gist attributes the long-term success of this case study to his focus on both the destructive symptoms and bacterial causes of the disease. “So much medicine today focuses on what has happened, not how to fix a problem. I am concerned with comprehensive treatment and prevention that addresses the sources of disease.”

The prescription tray delivery used for this patient, and for many in Dr. Gist’s practice, has been described by Dr. Gist as his ‘secret weapon’ and ‘therapeutic silver bullet’ for effective bacteria treatment. “The unique way in which the trays are fabricated,” Dr. Gist explains, “enables us to force the medication deep into the periodontal pockets where most of the bacteria reside and where most patients have a problem cleaning.” The simplicity of this treatment system is also relevant. According to Dr. Gist,”The prescription tray is so easy for our patients to use that it allows patients to have a high degree of compliance, especially when patients are educated to the incredible systemic and lifestyle benefits of keeping their mouths infection free.”

Dr. Gist prescribes the Perio Tray® for more than just periodontal disease. “We have developed a pre-operative treatment regimen that gets our patients ready to be restored, and a post-operative regimen that protects my patient’s investment in their health after their restorative work is complete. We have actually built a niche Perio Protect Practice within our Restorative / Cosmetic Practice that is improving our patients’ health.

New Morita Products to Debut at the AO Annual Meeting

Posted on Friday, March 13, 2015

IRVINE, Calif. – March 6, 2015 – J. Morita USA announces the R600T laser tip, a new treatment option accessory for the AdvErL Evo Er:YAG laser, and a new microsurgical blades product line, both to be displayed at the upcoming Academy of Osseointegration Annual Meeting.

Morita’s AdvErL Evo laser is effective for a broad range of applications on both hard and soft tissue and is clinically ideal for periodontal treatment. This unit offers a wide variety of tip options, now 20 tips in total, with three new tips just added to the product line. Most notably, AdvErL Evo has been studied and recognized clinically in the effective treatment of peri-implantitis, a challenging disease leading to bone loss around an implant. To further advance the management of patients with this disease, a new AdvErL Evo tip, the R600T, has been designed specifically to improve access to the infected tissue. The R600T emits the laser from the sides of the tip, as opposed to the end, which is especially useful for debridement of peri-implantitis. This directional feature is completely unique in the market and further expands AdvErL Evo’s clinical versatility and ability to treat this condition.

Feather Microsurgical Blades have also been added to J. Morita USA’s product line. They are made of high-quality stainless steel with a two-step grinding process which produces ultra-sharp cutting edges. The round and tapered shape is specifically designed for dental surgery and offers easy handling. Feather blades allow surgical precision with a very fine incision and are thus ideal for microsurgery and use with a microscope. They are appropriate for a wide variety of procedures for periodontal and regenerative surgery such as sulcus incision on thin gingiva, creating flaps, molar surgery, papillary incisions, and much more. All blades are gamma-sterilized and can be used immediately after opening the package. Multiple handle designs are also available.

The new AdvErL Evo R600T tip and Feather Microsurgical Blades will be introduced at the Academy of Osseointegration Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Moscone Center West, March 12-14, 2015, booth #118. Dentists may also stop by for a free gift with product trial at the booth. For more information, call 877-JMORITA (566-7482) or visit www.morita.com/usa.

SIDEXIS 4 Wants You to Know What’s in it for Clinicians and their Patients

Posted on Monday, March 9, 2015

February 26th, 2015 -- Intuitive software and new features such as patient timeline and lightbox for gathering and displaying images sets a new standard in clinical diagnosis and patient care.

Already feedback from numerous clinicians nationwide suggests that, with the introduction of SIDEXIS 4 software, Sirona Dental has once again set a new industry standard, this time in clinical diagnosis and patient communication.

Private practitioners Neal Patel, DDS, of Powell, Ohio, and Tarun Agarwal, DDS, of Raleigh, NC, recently discussed how this innovative software, with a sleek modern look, has improved their ability to diagnose and treatment plan and—perhaps most importantly—effectively communicate their findings to patients, who, are then more likely to accept recommended treatment.

Like many practitioners, Dr. Agarwal is concerned about potential downtime associated with any change to an existing system. However, he said, “SIDEXIS 4 takes ease of use to another level. What was previously hidden in the menu bar is now clearly visible in workflow icons arranged to match typical clinical procedures. Our team was using it literally 30 minutes after we installed it.“

Dr. Patel considered the software integration to be seamless and the workflow streamlined, offering the ability to move quickly from the mode of diagnosing an image and transition to patient education, treatment planning and, ultimately, case acceptance. He calls SIDEXIS 4 “the ultimate software of importing and exporting images in various formats,” readily accepting images obtained by intraoral, panoramic, and cephalometric x-rays, 2D and 3D CBCT systems, intraoral cameras, FaceScanner, and more.

Dr. Patel finds especially valuable the visual patient timeline, which enables the clinician or team member to scroll through a complete patient history to select and retrieve desired images based on acquisition date. “Before, if I wanted to view an image taken 2 or 3 years earlier of the current area of concern, I would have to close one image to open another. Now I can just scroll through the timeline for the earlier image seamlessly without having to open up folders and search for specific locations.”

Complementing the timeline, says Dr. Agarwal is the lightbox feature, that, with just a few clicks, enables side-by-side display of multiple images taken over time, offering objective anatomical comparisons of 2D, 3D, intraoral, or camera images. “If we have a scan or image from a few years back, we are able to take that image and compare it to an image we just took.”

Dr. Patel adds that ‘comparing apples to apples’—especially cone beams—to be especially powerful for both diagnosis and patient communication. “I can literally drag and drop images and collect them and organize my thoughts using these tools to diagnose more quickly. It also enables me to better convey my diagnosis to the patient with pictures, which themselves speak a thousand words.”

In summary, Dr. Agarwal says, “The imaging is better, the tools offer the ability to control and manipulate the images, all of which add up to better diagnostics, better treatment planning, and better acceptance of the cases we are able to so clearly present to our patients.”

Multiple delivery units complement this collection to maximize the efficiency and storage capability of these rear cabinets.

The Spirit 1700 Dental Chair combines innovative technology with quality components resulting in an easy to use, durable dental chair. Standard features such as embossed membrane touchpads for the doctor and assistant, a dual articulating headrest and swing away armrests coupled with the Spirit 1700’s powerful hydraulic lift mechanism provide a quality seating experience. “Advanced technology. Quality within reach.”

The Centennial 2 Cabinetry and the Spirit 1700 Dental Chair can be viewed at the new Pelton & Crane Tradeshow Booth (#1003). Overall, the booth offers improved visibility, better functionality and more interactive features for a better customer experience. This includes a new Interactive Design Center, full dental operatories, a New Products Area, Sterilization Display and Ergonomics Zone.

Reaffirming its leadership role in educating dental professionals about the importance of ergonomics, Pelton & Crane is supporting the Chicago Dental Society’s FREE Ergonomics & Wellness Clinic, held at Booth #100 from 8-‐5pm CST on February 26-‐28. During these sessions, physical therapists will consider how individual professionals position themselves around the chair and on stools in an operatory. Assessments will last 15-‐30 minutes, and participants will leave with advice for simple improvements. Additional education will be provided by noted expert, Timothy Caruso, PT.

“This year’s Midwinter Meeting brings together the many ways in which Pelton & Crane is working to create relationships with dental professionals — innovation, engagement and education — and deliver true value during the time they spend at tradeshows such as this one,” said Emily Brooks, Senior Marketing Manager at Pelton & Crane. “We wanted to elevate the exhibit hall from a sales space to an environment where we can have a meaningful exchange about dental professionals’ practice needs, physical well-‐being and the solutions Pelton & Crane can deliver to support them.”
