Academy of Osseointegration Honors the Life and Legacy of Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark

Posted on Tuesday, December 23, 2014

CHICAGO -- December 22, 2014 – The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) expresses its sincere condolences and honors the life and legacy of Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark – the “Father of Modern Dental Implantology” and an Honorary Fellow of AO.

“Professor Brånemark was a giant, brilliantly scientific intellect, embodied in an equally large compassionate heart. His caring focus was always on the patient,” said Dr. Edward Sevetz, Jr., Past President, Academy of Osseointegration. “His breakthrough discovery of osseointegrated titanium benefits patients throughout the world, and will forever benefit mankind.”

“Professor Brånemark’s work genuinely transformed the dental landscape and the smiles of millions of people across the globe,” said AO President Dr. Joseph Gian-Grasso. “It is because of him that the Academy of Osseointegration exists, and today we honor his memory and monumental legacy. As an organization, we aspire to encompass his passion and to continue his lifelong work to enhance oral health globally.”

In May 1982, Professor Brånemark introduced osseointegration to North America at a conference in Toronto, Canada, sparking much interest and enthusiasm and creating ripples throughout the dental community. Proponents of the new science were determined to improve the success rate of implants.

After learning of this new technique, Dr. Charles Berman and Dr. Gerald Barrack formed the New York Osseointegration Study Group, a small conclave of friends with a shared passion to understand and share knowledge about this new science. This group evolved into AO, as it is known today.

Because of Professor Brånemark’s, and his predecessors’, ongoing commitment to research, technological advancements and proper training, dental implants are now highly predictable and commonplace with a success rate of about 95 percent.

“Today we mourn the loss of Professor Brånemark. At the same time we celebrate the honor of having known him and thank our good fortunes for the knowledge that he provided,” said Dr. Steven Eckert, editor of The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants.

Henry Schein Financial Helps Practice Owners Save Up to $500,000 Before 2015

Posted on Tuesday, December 23, 2014

MELVILLE, NY – December 22, 2014 – Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, today announced its ongoing support for practice owners seeking to leverage the recently signed Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014. For more information on tax savings and incentive opportunities on equipment, technology and renovations that cost up to $500,000 before December 31, 2014, practice owners can contact Henry Schein Financial Services by emailing hsfs@henryschein.com or calling 800-853-9493.

Henry Schein Financial Services offers an array of business solutions for health care practitioners, including equipment leasing and financing, and patient and practice credit card services.

As part of the Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014, Section 179 deduction limits have reduced the after-tax costs of acquiring depreciable business property in 2014 by accelerating the tax deductibility of all or part of the purchase price of qualifying purchases (equipment, technology and off-the-shelf software). The amount is scheduled to be reduced to $25,000 in 2015.

“Henry Schein Financial Services is focused on offering practitioners attractive financing costs,” said Keith Drayer, Vice President, Henry Schein Financial Services. “Practice owners may face higher financing costs next year with less favorable after-tax cost on equipment purchases, computers, software and furniture while struggling to balance technology costs. However, with favorable deferred payment options, an office can start generating revenue by purchasing and using new equipment now, paying for it next year and maximizing the after tax savings this year. Taking advantage of Section 179 now through the end of the year represents a financial opportunity for health care practices.”

Suction of Oxygen Can Reduce Risk of Surgical Fires in Dental Procedures

Posted on Thursday, December 18, 2014

Anesthesia Progress—The oxygen-enriched environment of surgical procedures creates the risk of fire. As many as 600 operating room fires occur each year in the United States despite a decline in the use of flammable anesthetics. To ensure the safety of dental surgical procedures, a new study investigated the use of suction to prevent combustion.

A study in the journal Anesthesia Progress replicated potential surgical fire conditions with a mechanical model in an oxygen-enriched environment. The internal body cavities of chickens were used to simulate a patient’s oral cavity, and an electrosurgical unit was used as the ignition source. The study tested the hypothesis that high-volume dental suction might draw off enough oxygen to delay or inhibit the onset of combustion.

Ventilation of oxygen in patient oral cavities or evacuation by high-volume suction may help decrease the risk of fires. The current study conducted 41 trials to test its hypothesis; 20 employed suction, and the rest did not.

Among the trials, three types of combustion events were noted: an audible pop, a flash of light, and full ignition. All three conditions were observed in 11 of the 21 trials that did not include suction. In trials where suction was used, there was no ignition at all in 18 of 20 cases. In the two cases where ignition did occur, the fire was small. All three combustion types were more likely to occur in the no-suction environment.

While not common, surgical fires can have fatal results. Fire safety research has identified pooled, or trapped, oxygen around a patient’s tissue, under surgical drapes, and in the operating room environment. Equipment leaks and administration of supplemental oxygen, such as through a nasal cannula, increase the risk of fire. Lasers and electrocautery tools can provide sources of ignition. The head, neck, and upper torso are the areas most often affected by surgical fires.

Standard pediatric dental sedation techniques utilize this equipment and create the conditions just described.". Greater fire safety awareness and knowledge of prevention techniques can help establish a safer dental environment.

Surgical fires have been deemed completely preventable. The research in this article suggests that adequate removal of the source of oxidation from the surgical site may be key to eliminating fires.

Solea CO2 dental laser wins Popular Science "Best of What's New" Award

Posted on Wednesday, December 17, 2014

As the impact of Convergent Dental's Solea CO2 laser continues to expand in the dental market, the greater scientific community is taking notice. Popular Science named Solea a “Best of What’s New” product for 2014.

The Solea CO2 laser is the first CO2 laser system cleared by the FDA for hard and soft tissue in dentistry. Convergent Dental Inc. is a privately held dental device and technology company led by CEO Michael Cataldo.

According to Convergent Dental, 95% of Solea users perform procedures on hard and soft tissue with no anesthesia. A similar percentage report soft tissue procedures are done with virtually no bleeding. Blood-free and anesthesia-free procedures represent a major leap forward in dentistry as practitioners are able to execute multi-quadrant dentistry, fillings on the fly, and soft tissue procedures in a single appointment. Patients can receive care in a fraction of the time and discomfort they were accustomed to from traditional drills.

“Winners of Popular Science’s Best of What’s New Award tend to change what the future will look like. This year’s 100 honorees are no different: they are all revolutionary in their respective fields,” said Popular Science Editor-in-Chief Cliff Ransom.

Like many companies, Convergent hopes their product will open up new patient bases for practitioners. Recent Gallup Well-Being research found that more than one-third (35.3%) of Americans had not visited the dentist in the past 12 months. A major contributor to this oral health care epidemic is patients’ dread of the dentist. By providing pain-free or pain-reduced dentistry, Solea and similar advances could change the way people view going to the dentist.

Solea's unique 9.3 µm wavelength laser and innovative application of computer controls enable it to replace the drill as the primary tool for hard and soft tissue surgeries. The Solea laser is quiet and virtually sensationless.

“We are thrilled to be honored by Popular Science’s editors as one of the world’s most innovative products,” said Cataldo. “Convergent Dental’s CO2 dental laser Solea is changing what it means to go to the dentist by providing a technology that delivers fast, virtually painless, noiseless, anesthesia-free procedures that alleviate patients’ fears and encourage them to receive proper oral care to stay healthy and happy.”

Each year, the editors of Popular Science review thousands of products in search of the top 100 tech innovations of the year; breakthrough products and technologies that represent a significant leap in 12 categories: aerospace, automotive, engineering, entertainment, gadgets, green, hardware, health, home, recreation, security, and software.

Convergent Dental offers a list of Solea dentist on their “Find a Dentist” page: https://www.convergentdental.com/find-a-dentist/.

About William J. Gies and the Gies Report:

William Gies was a Columbia University biochemistry professor and founder of the College of Dental Medicine at Columbia University where he was interested in dental education, science and clinical applications. In 1926, as part of a series of studies on U.S. professional education, funded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Dr. Gies published a landmark report that established the importance of dentistry as a healing science and an essential component of higher education in the health professions. The Gies Report, Dental Education in the United States and Canada, which took five years to research and write, consists of 250 pages of text and more than 400 pages of appendices, including lengthy descriptions and evaluations of the existing dental schools, each of which Dr. Gies visited. Since the Gies Report, there have been many other reports on dental education in the context of health professions education. However, Dental Education in the United States and Canada remains to this day the most relevant survey of dental education and critical issues within the field.
