ADA Comments on “Modified Risk” Tobacco Products

Posted on Monday, December 8, 2014

Rockville, Md. – Citing “a scarcity of published research,” the American Dental Association said it is "virtually impossible" to justify claims that smokeless tobacco and such newer generation products as electronic cigarettes and hookah tobacco "are somehow less harmful to the oral cavity than combustible tobacco products or without other adverse effects."

The ADA statements came December 5 in preliminary comments on a Food and Drug Administration regulatory notice issued this past August. The ADA will offer supplemental comments by February 23, when the comment process closes.

Research Challenges Whether Many People with Tooth Loss Really Need Dentures

Posted on Monday, December 8, 2014

Studies conducted by the University's Australian Research Center for Population Oral Health in the School of Dentistry have found that people with tooth loss do not have their quality of life interfered with provided they still have a certain number and type of teeth left.

In dentistry terms, these patients are considered to have "shortened dental arches," enabling them to maintain functional use of many teeth. The researchers say there is a cutting off point at which tooth loss interferes with quality of life, but patients only need dentures when they reach that cutting off point.

The study, based on data of more than 2,700 Australians, is to be published in a future issue of the journal Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. The researchers say as many as 434,000 Australians who currently would be considered for dentures at some stage in their lives may not really need them.

"For years it has been taken for granted that if people experience tooth loss, they will need dentures, bridges, implants or other corrective processes to replace the missing teeth," says lead author Dr. Haiping Tan.

"What we've found is that it really depends on the position of the teeth that have been lost, as well as the number. Most people have 28 adult teeth, plus the four wisdom teeth, but it is possible to have significantly less teeth as long as people have them in the right positions and in the right numbers.

"It's about getting the right balance of biting and cutting teeth at the front of the mouth with enough of the chewing teeth at the back - that can make a real difference to people's dental function," she says.

Study co-author Professor Marco Peres, also from the University's School of Dentistry, says the findings are significant both for patients and for dental health systems.

"For the public health sector, this work raises the question of how to allocate resources, especially if many people are currently receiving dentures or other corrective procedures when they may not need to do so," Professor Peres says.

"These resources could instead be allocated to the prevention of further tooth loss, diagnostic services and follow up for the patient, rather than prosthetic procedures," he says.

Study: Gum Disease Treatment Lowers Blood Sugar

Posted on Tuesday, December 2, 2014

INTELIHEALTH - Treatment for gum disease can lower blood-sugar levels in people who have not been diagnosed with diabetes, a new study finds.

The study included 220 people. Some of them had gum (periodontal) disease. Others did not. The gum-disease group had a higher level of hemoglobin A1C than the group that did not have gum disease.

Hemoglobin A1C is a long-term measure of blood-sugar levels. A value above 6.5% indicates diabetes.

Everyone in the gum-disease group got non-surgical treatment for gum disease. This included two to four sessions of deep cleaning and root planing. In root planing, the roots of teeth are smoothed to make it more difficult for bacteria to attach.

Three months later, the gum-disease group had improved gum health. This group also had lower levels of hemoglobin A1C than they did when the study began. Researchers said that hemoglobin A1C levels were "near normal."

The study was published online in the Nov. 7 issue of the journal Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry.

Diabetes and gum disease are considered to be linked. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) says that people with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease than non-diabetics. The AAP also says that severe gum disease can increase blood sugar. This could put people with pre-diabetes or diabetes at risk for further health problems.

However, fewer studies have examined the effect of gum disease treatment on the blood sugar levels of non-diabetics. A study published in early 2014 looked at the use of non-surgical treatment for gum disease in people with pre-diabetes. Treatment reduced hemoglobin A1C levels by about 0.2%. In pre-diabetes, the A1C measurement is above normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. However, that study included only 12 people.

Sunstar Expands Horizons to Enhance Efficiency Throughout the Dental Practice

Posted on Monday, December 1, 2014

Chicago, IL —Leading oral healthcare products manufacturer Sunstar Americas will use the Greater New York Dental Meeting to showcase efficiency-enhancing innovations for not only its traditional area of hygiene care, but for periodontal procedures as well.  Looking to augment its longstanding heritage as a dental hygiene innovator, Sunstar will spotlight its new Butler®Prophyciency™ disposable prophy angles, the industry’s only prophy angles that clean and polish without paste.  In addition, the company will expand its reach within the dental practice with its launch of a revolutionary, easy-to-handle bone grafting solution aptly named GUIDOR® easy-graft® alloplastic bone grafting system.

Butler®Prophyciency™ disposable prophy angles, the latest breakthrough in professional dental hygiene pioneered by Sunstar, represent a truly smarter way to clean.  They can save hygienists considerable time by eliminating the need to refill the cup in the prophy angle as well as the need for the patient to rinse during a cleaning, by providing much better visibility during cleaning, and by simplifying cleanup between patients due to the lack of paste splatter or mess.

Moreover, Butler®Prophyciency™ delivers exceptionally versatile cleaning efficacy.  Its unique  ButlerBloom™. Contouring Cup is designed to effectively clean and polish interproximally, subgingivally and on all facial and lingual tooth surfaces.  It adapts better to follow contours on all tooth surfaces, and it transitions easily from tooth to tooth.  One study revealed that 78% of patients who received a Prophyciency™ prophylaxis preferred it to the traditional procedure.  A related study revealed that 71% of dental professionals who used Prophyciency™ felt that it would be beneficial to their polishing procedure and patient care.  In addition, clinical research indicates that Prophyciency™ delivers significantly superior stain removal than the leading prophy angle brand used in combination with the leading prophy paste.

GUIDOR® easy-graft® is an ultra-efficient bone grafting solution being introduced by Sunstar into the North American market after years of success in overseas markets.  It is a fully resorbable, synthetic bone graft substitute that will appeal to clinicians who seek stability, osteoconductivity and control of placement. With over 250,000 applications worldwide, GUIDOR® easy-graft® is a complete system that can be trusted to predictably and efficiently handle all socket preservation and immediate implant needs.

Each GUIDOR® easy-graft® system is composed of beta-tricalcium phosphate granules coated with a polylactide polymer that are mixed with an N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone liquid activator called BioLinker® to form a permeable, moldable material that hardens to form a stable, porous scaffold. This unique combination of materials in GUIDOR® easy-graft® provides the foundation for exceptionally easy preparation, dispensing and shaping. The porosity of the granule supports material resorption and bone regeneration. A majority of clinicians surveyed said they use GUIDOR® easy-graft® because preparation and placement are simpler and faster than other bone graft materials and because use it does not require a membrane in many cases.

“We feel these two innovations will have a dramatic impact on the efficiency of our valued customers,” said Aaron Pfarrer, Senior Director of Marketing and Professional Relations for Sunstar.  “Butler®Prophyciency™ builds on our rich heritage of enhancing the efficacy and convenience of hygiene care, while GUIDOR® easy-graft® will enable us to bring the same degree of ingenuity to periodontics that we have been bringing to dental hygiene for decades.”

The Butler®Prophyciency™and GUIDOR® easy-graft® product lines, and all other Sunstar Americas products, can be viewed at Booth #3828 at the Greater New York Dental Meeting November 30 through December 3, 2014.    Additional information about Sunstar Americas professional dental products can be found at us-professional.gumbrand.com.

Dr. Frank J. Tuminelli Installed As President of American College of Prosthodontists

Posted on Wednesday, December 3, 2014

CHICAGO, Dec. 3, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Frank J. Tuminelli, DMD, FACP, has been installed as the 2014-15 president of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP). Dr. Tuminelli was sworn in during the 44th Annual Session of the ACP held in New Orleans Nov. 5-8, 2014.

Dr. Tuminelli is a highly respected and well-loved prosthodontic professional, who has served as a member of the ACP Board of Directors for 10 years and holds the distinction of ACP Fellow. A member of the ACP Spokespersons Network, Dr. Tuminelli has been quoted in three publications this year and has appeared in two ACP videos for the College.

Dr. Tuminelli is past president of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics (GNYAP) and is the graduate program director for New York Hospital Queens, which is a member of the Presbyterian Health System. With his extensive leadership experience in prosthodontic organizations, his work as a member of the CODA Revisions Task Force, and his perspective as an educator and private practice prosthodontist whose clients have included the New York Islanders, Dr. Tuminelli represents the needs of academics as well as private practitioners at a time when informed patients see a specialist – a prosthodontist – as having advanced training in digital dentistry and new technology that saves patients time and cuts surgery time in half.

"During my presidency, one of my goals will be to ensure prosthodontics continues to attract the best and brightest talent for research, clinical practice, academia and, subsequently, leadership to the specialty," Dr. Tuminelli said. "Today, I have patients who ask to see their 'new tooth' being made, hold the block of ceramic, watch it being milled, and then, as a prosthodontist, I place it in their mouth – all in one appointment."

Prosthodontists are specialized dentists with advanced training in oral health issues who are committed to improving patient outcomes. From implants, crowns, veneers and tooth whitening to full-mouth reconstruction, prosthodontists specialize in digital dentistry and CAD/CAM solutions.

The ACP is the only prosthodontic specialty organization whose membership is based solely on education credentials. ACP members must be in or have completed an ADA-accredited advanced education program in prosthodontics.

First-Ever 5x Dental Summit Hosts More Than 5,000 Participants

Posted on Wednesday, December 3, 2014

Atlanta, GA – November 13, 2014 - Over 5,200 dentists and their team members gathered October 23-25 at Atlanta’s Philips Arena for the first-ever 5x Dental Summit Event hosted by the Scheduling Institute (SI). Teams came from all over the country – 48 states and 5 countries were represented. During the event more than 2,400 Instagram photos were posted under #5XSummit.

Founder & President of SI, Jay Geier, said, “I created this event to be the largest, most exciting event ever held in the history of dentistry. I know that many doctors and their teams never get out of the office together to focus on their vision and engagement in growing the practice. And I know from 25 years of doing what we do that it’s one of the most important things that has to happen in order to significantly grow. So this event was all about getting doctors and their team members to increase their commitment level to the practice and their engagement in what they’re doing.”

The event featured exciting content and speakers. Just a few of the speakers were Bill Rancic (Apprentice winner), Kerri Strug (Olympic Gymnast & Gold medal winner), Walter Bond (Former NBA Player now know as “Mr. Accountability”), Former Navy Seal Commander Rorke Denver, Country music star Trace Adkins (also a Celebrity Apprentice winner) and Don Barden (DDS Financial). There was also a private concert one evening with Trace Adkins. Each day during the event SI awarded the Most Spirited Team of the Day with $1,000 cash. 2,997 of the team members attending participated in helping SI set a Guinness World Record for the most selfies (self photographs) taken simultaneously in one location. During the event the SI held a fundraising campaign through Go Fund Me for the Wounded Warriors Project. 924 attendees and their friends and family contributed more than $124,290 and SI President Jay Geier matched $100,000. Dr. Angel Lopez and his team from Oviedo, Florida were surprised by Geier with a ride home from the event in a private jet.

SI gave away three cars to attendees during the event. Leading up to the event SI’s 5x clients who participate in a program designed to take their practices five times were invited to submit videos telling the story of their journey of success working with the Scheduling Institute. SI encouraged participants to include statistics, accomplishments, and challenges and to have team involvement, be creative and, of course provide entertainment.

The audience voted on the best story and the winners, Dr. Joe Maio and Dr. John Kwant of Apex Dental in Utah left with Jay’s Ferrari California. The Associate Doctors who participate in SI’s Associate Bootcamp, which is designed to increase Associate production, were invited to submit videos sharing their journey as well. The winner from that group, Dr. Rob Carimi went home with a brand new Mercedes. And the third car was given away to Mary Ann Landry, the Marketing Director for Dr. Michael Landry’s practice in Texas.
