The American Association of Dental Office Management Recognizes Erika Pusillo as the Recipient of its 2023 Green Leader Award

Posted on Monday, November 27, 2023

The American Association of Dental Office Management (AADOM) is proud to announce that Erika Pusillo, Practice Optimizer for Delray Beach-based Spodak Dental Group, has been selected as the recipient of the 10th Annual Green Leader Award. Ms. Pusillo was presented with the award by Lorie Streeter, Vice President, AADOM, and Jenn Flowers, Regional Manager, Henry Schein Dental, at the recent 2023 AADOM Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Made possible by a grant from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, AADOM’s Green Leader award was created as part of the organization’s Green Leader Initiative, which aims to empower practice managers to reduce their practices’ environmental footprint and lead their teams in becoming part of dentistry’s green future.

The Green Leader Initiative engages members to reduce the environmental impact of “business as usual” dentistry, which perfectly falls in line with Pusillo’s goals for Spodak Dental Group’s state-of-the-art, 13,000 square foot, LEED Gold Certified dental operations. In addition to optimizing the practice to take the very best care of their patients, she works to create an efficient, green, and sustainability-focused workflow that also takes the very best care of the team and the planet.

“It is such an amazing honor to be recognized as a Green Leader and use this platform to promote the many ways we all can be green leaders,” said Pusillo, who has been with the practice since 2009. “There is always an opportunity to live out our company’s core values and not only be a pioneer in the dental field, but also a pioneer in our community and for our planet as a whole.”

Through many initiatives - past, present, and future - Erika has remained resolute in her goal of providing high-quality dental care in a green facility with a growing team, all while creating the smallest footprint possible. Her efforts include, but are not limited to, supporting businesses and suppliers that have both a sustainable mindset and a minimal impact on the environment, utilizing digital technology to reduce waste, using eco-friendly cleaning products, implementing waste- and water-reducing systems throughout the facility, and organizing beach cleanups and tree planting events for the team and community.

“On behalf of Team Schein, we congratulate Ms. Pusillo on her Green Leader Award, and we look forward to continuing to support AADOM’s mission of helping dental practices make an impact on the communities they serve,” said Flowers. “The AADOM Green Leader initiative represents our core values and our mission of ‘doing well by doing good,’ and we are committed to supporting our customers in their efforts to establish sustainable practices as part of our shared commitment to preserving our environment.”

“We are so thankful for the Henry Schein Cares Foundation and its continued support of this initiative to recognize our members, as well as its efforts to create a more environmentally friendly practice,” said Heather Colicchio, Founder, and President, AADOM. “It is important to us at AADOM to highlight the members who exemplify eco-friendly practices in their dental office, and we are so happy to present Ms. Pusillo with the Green Leader Award.”

Dentsply Sirona Introduces New 3D Printing Resins for Production of Flexible Splints with Primeprint

Posted on Monday, November 20, 2023

With Primeprint Splint SF, Primeprint Splint ST and the Material Unit Type S Dentsply Sirona is introducing new treatment solutions utilizing 3D printing with the Primeprint Solution. Dental professionals now have a broad range of materials for nightguard, splint and repositioner treatments available to be produced quickly and easily in the dental office and dental laboratory.

Dentsply Sirona, the world's largest manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies, enhances the range of applications for its Primeprint Solution with additions to its resin portfolio. The new resins Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF have now been FDA and CE cleared. With those Dentsply Sirona answers the needs of dental professionals to fabricate patient-specific nightguards and splints for a variety of treatments that fit precisely and provide a high level of biocompatibility and supports them to advance with confidence. These splints are increasingly called for in dental practices1, for example by patients with bruxism.

Manufacturing these nightguards with Primeprint Solution offers users numerous advantages in addition to the high degree of automation of the Dentsply Sirona 3D printing system. With a new innovative Primeprint Material Unit Type S and application specifically developed print processes the new splint solution reduces much of the manual work that would otherwise be necessary, such as time-consuming polishing. The results are already shiny after the post curing process and can be easily detached from the support structures.

Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF resins allow to be printed with thin wall thickness – starting at 0.8 mm. They provide different degrees of hardness and flexibility and can thus be selected according to the indication and the patient’s needs. To provide an optimal patient wear comfort they are free of MMA, THF-MA and TPO2, allowing a neutral taste and scent.

Simplified workflows with Primeprint Solution

The new resins are designed to be used in the Primeprint 3D printing system within various workflows. Dental professionals have the option to design themselves using inLab Software, order the design from DS Core Create or order it from their preferred dental lab. When using DS Core Create design services, the splint design is provided within the turnaround time of six hours as a ready-to-print-file. This allows for immediate production, making it easy to delegate the workflow to the practice staff.

"Thanks to the new splint solution, I can now offer expanded indications for my patients with 3D printing," explains Dr. Meena Barsoum, dentist from Arlington (USA), one of the first users of the new Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF resins. "I love how easy it is to remove the support structures after the automated post-processing in the PPU, and my patients appreciate both the wearing comfort and the esthetics."

"This innovation is another step toward advancing automated 3D printing in practices and laboratories," says Max Milz, Group Vice President Connected Technology Solutions at Dentsply Sirona. "So dental 3D printing is once again proving to be a highly attractive technology that is particularly suitable for fabricating non-permanent removable applications such as splints, surgical guides and models and seamlessly complements existing methods."

Pacific Dental Services Hosts Inaugural Mouth-Body Connection® Symposium

Posted on Friday, November 17, 2023

Clinicians from all over the U.S. attended the forum to receive continuing education credits and learn from experts about the latest advancements in oral-systemic health.

Pacific Dental Services® (PDS), a leading dental and medical support organization in the U.S., recently hosted its first-ever Mouth-Body Connection® Symposium in Irvine, Calif. Underscoring the commitment of PDS to continuing education and clinical expertise development, the event provided a platform for PDS-supported dentists, dental hygienists, and primary care providers to learn from experts about the correlation between oral health and overall health, and how to use preventive dentistry and integrated dental and medical care to improve patient health outcomes.

Keynote speakers included Amy Doneen, DNP, ARNP, a pioneer in preventing heart attack, stroke, and diabetes; Dirk-Rolf Gieselmann, a leader in periodontal health; and PDS Founder and CEO Stephen E. Thorne IV, along with several members of the PDS-supported clinical leadership team led by Carolyn Ghazal, DDS, Chair of GP Platform Development. Presentations highlighted the education on the Mouth-Body Connection and the latest tools in preventive dentistry.

“Our inaugural Mouth-Body Connection Symposium was a powerful educational platform, marking the beginning of a growth trajectory for our dental and medical professionals,” said Thorne. “Our supported oral health and primary care providers gained valuable insights from leading experts, while exploring advanced tools to elevate patient health outcomes. Recognizing the mouth as a gateway to the body, the event emphasized a comprehensive, integrated approach to oral health.”

The conference’s curriculum is part of PDS’ continuing education program, which offers a robust selection of free units online or in-person through PDS University® – Institute of Dentistry. Seven continuing education credits were provided to the 150+ clinicians who attended the event.

The Mouth-Body Connection Symposium included presentations on:

• Dental-Medical Integration

• The Mouth-Body Connection Mindset

• Incorporating Arterial Health into Your Dental Practice

• aMMP-8/OralFitnessCheck®

• Salivary and Blood Testing/Implementation

Growing research shows that many leading causes of death in the U.S. can be linked to bacteria in the mouth. PDS was an early adopter of salivary and blood testing as a tool to screen for collagen breakdown and other early signs of periodontal disease.

PDS-supported practices began conducting pilot programs in 2020 using active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) and point-of-care blood glucose (HbA1c) testing to identify early signs of disease and improve patient outcomes. Many PDS-supported clinicians spoke at the symposium to highlight the success they’ve seen thanks to embracing the Mouth-Body Connection in their offices.

“The symposium was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how salivary testing could help me become a better health care practitioner," said Diana Do-Yabut, DMD, a PDS-supported general dentist and multi-practice owner. “The insights from the experts in the field enhanced my understanding and validated my purpose for incorporating saliva testing in my practice – so I could better understand the best way to treat their periodontal disease and reduce long-term systemic health risks. I am thankful to have the opportunity to incorporate a Mouth-Body Connection mindset in my daily practice and cannot imagine practicing any other way.”
