Dentsply Sirona and the AADOCR Recognize Students’ Outstanding Research Projects With the 2023 SCADA Awards

Posted on Tuesday, April 18, 2023

Dentsply Sirona and the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) congratulate the 2023 winners of the SCADA Awards.

The 2023 SCADA Awards (Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application), co-sponsored by Dentsply Sirona and the American Association for Dental, Oral & Craniofacial Research (AADOCR), annually invite US Dental Schools to select a student to participate in the competition, which aims to recognize outstanding student research projects just like every year. In this year’s edition, a total of 38 selected students submitted their projects in one of the two available categories: Clinical Science & Public Health Research and Basic & Translational Science. Winners were announced at the AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition held in Portland, Oregon at the Opening Ceremonies and Awards Program in a special evening event hosted by Dentsply Sirona to which all participants were invited to attend.

Through this award, the initiators have been supporting oral health research for years and promoting young professionals in the early stages of their research careers – also by making them part of a worldwide network of clinicians and scientists.

· 1st Place: Jay Dalal, University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine, won the competition with his research project “The Effectiveness of Current Desensitizing Agents at Hypersensitivity Prevention”.

· 3rd Place: Darnell Cuylear, University of California, San Francisco, project: Calcium Phosphate Microparticles For Dual Anti-resorptive Drug Delivery and Osteogenesis

First, second and third winning projects in each of the two categories were awarded with $1,000 for 1st place, $750 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd.

SCADA – a program dedicated to research and international networking

SCADA was initiated in 1959 and is committed to two main goals: to strengthen the field of dental research by supporting young professionals in early stages of their research careers, and to promote networking between students and clinicians and scientists from all over the world as they develop their skills and advance their careers. Dentsply Sirona and the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research support this program as co-sponsors, engaging over 7,000 students worldwide, to showcase their research, recognize their passion for discovery and innovation, and fuel the future of dental care.

In addition to the US competition, the SCADA program also has an international component. Dentsply Sirona sponsored 6 other national student research competitions in France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand in 2022. With Dentsply Sirona’s support, the student winners of each country were invited to present their winning research on a non-competitive manner at the AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting.

SCADA advances science and improves global oral health

“Our vision at Dentsply Sirona is to transform dentistry and to improve oral health globally. This is just possible with science. What better way to help guide the future of the profession and oral health than to support science in its foundations. The student clinicians are the future of oral science and we are committed to investing into this future by running the SCADA program since 64 years.” said Dr. Rainer Seemann, Vice President Global Clinical Research with Dentsply Sirona.

“It’s a pleasure to recognize and celebrate our new, talented scientists in the oral health space,” said AADOCR President Jane Weintraub. “These accomplished SCADA investigators provide an auspicious future for dental, oral, and craniofacial research.”

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Garners Legislative Support for Expanding Patient Oral Health Access

Posted on Friday, April 14, 2023

An advocacy campaign led by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) successfully garnered broad bipartisan political support within Congress to improve access to oral health care primarily for children served by the Medicaid program and for people with disabilities.

U.S. Senate and House letters were sent to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), applauding recent federal efforts to work with the dental community to address a national crisis related to operating room access for needed dental surgeries. Delays in such care affect a child's ability to learn, eat, and function and result in extended illness, pain, and economic burden to patients and taxpayers. Policy makers asked that CMS work to expand access to oral health surgeries by allowing dental care to be provided in ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs). As of January 1, 2023, hospitals can more easily provide for needed oral health surgeries. ASCs could expand access to care sites, supporting those in need of care who reside in rural and other underserved communities.

The Health Task Force of the Consortium for Constituents with Disabilities (CCD), a network of national and local organizations focused on improving health care access for individuals with disabilities, submitted a separate letter to CMS asking for urgent action in support of the AAPD's message.

AAPD applauds legislators, particularly Representatives Drew Ferguson (R-GA) and Terrie Sewell (D-AL) and Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) for their leadership in advancing these congressional letters. The Academy also recognizes CMS for actions taken to date to address this national crisis, anticipating further progress this year.

Benevis Honors Medicaid Awareness Month

Posted on Wednesday, April 12, 2023

The organization shares a 'thank you' to healthcare providers and dental care teams that prioritize the treatment of underserved patient populations

Benevis, a leading dental support organization (DSO) for practices focused on dental care and orthodontics, and its 120 dental offices in 13 states and the District of Columbia, are proud to support Medicaid Awareness Month this April. Benevis has pledged to expand access to high-quality oral care for underserved children and their families and continues to deliver on its mission to improve patients' lives by changing the paradigm of dental health in the United States.

Benevis is honoring Medicaid Awareness Month by thanking all the healthcare providers and dental care teams that dedicate their time—personally and professionally—to helping underserved patient populations. Serving disadvantaged communities has long been a hurdle in the dental health community, with only 43 percent of U.S. dentists accepting Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) plans for children, and 67 percent of them not ever treating a single child. Oral health is healthcare, too, and work still needs to be done to expand access to care and improve the trajectory of dental health in America.

"To better serve diverse patient populations, collaboration across medical communities like primary care providers and oral healthcare teams is key," explained Dr. Peter Igoe, DDS, Louisiana State Dental Director, Benevis. "Even in 2023, millions of American families still lack insurance eligibility and enrollment access which makes Benevis' work to lower financial, educational, and geographical barriers so vital to ensure everyone can enjoy happy, healthy smiles."

Benevis is proud to be among the small group of dental providers, 18 percent, who choose to manage a Medicaid population that includes more than 100 child visits annually. The DSO serves over 500,000 children, 82 percent of whom are Medicaid patients.

To continue to tackle the geographical and coverage barriers to dental care that persist nationwide, especially in marginalized communities where the need is often the greatest, Benevis offers a variety of oral health resources to inspire healthcare providers and patients to focus on the importance of dental health. The resources include:

Free Dental Care: Benevis will provide free dental care to uninsured families during Sharing Smiles Day on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Dentists and hygienists will provide high-quality and compliant dental care in 26 locally branded Benevis dental practices across 11 states. Benevis encourages families to register at www.SharingSmilesDay.com in advance of the event.

● Medicaid and CHIP Coverage Guide: Families can find information on health insurance programs and dental providers in their state by visiting InsuranceKidsNow.gov through their interactive map.

Physician Dental Home Playbook: For healthcare providers looking to help patients establish a dental home or to review oral risk assessments and care checklists, please reference the Dental Home Playbook

Henry Schein Announces Its Support for the ‘Carry The Load®’ Memorial May Campaign for the Second Year in a Row

Posted on Wednesday, April 12, 2023

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) today announced its support for the Carry The Load® Memorial May campaign, a month-long Memorial Day awareness program providing active ways to connect Americans to the sacrifices made by the U.S. military, Veterans, first responders, and their families.

As a national sponsor for the second year in a row, Henry Schein Cares, the Company’s global corporate social responsibility program, in partnership with Henry Schein’s Veterans Engagement Team (VET), North American Rescue (NAR), Henry Schein Dental, Henry Schein Medical, and Henry Schein One, will participate in the activities being held across the U.S. throughout May. Additionally, the businesses will sponsor the flagship event, the Dallas Memorial March, a two-day celebration of heroes, remembrance of the fallen, and education in respectful observance of Memorial Day. Click here for a recap from last year’s Memorial May campaign.

Carry The Load’s Memorial May initiative was created to honor and remember the people who died while serving in the U.S. military. During the 32-day event, beginning on April 27, 2023, Team Schein Members will take part by walking in the National Relay, attending a rally, and fundraising for the nation’s heroes. Henry Schein Cares, North American Rescue, Henry Schein Dental, Henry Schein Medical, and Henry Schein One will sponsor the following rallies and the Dallas Memorial March:

● May 1, 2023 – Melville, New York

● May 9, 2023 – Los Angeles, California

● May 10, 2023 – Chicago, Illinois

● May 13, 2023 – Greenville, South Carolina

● May 28 - 29, 2023 – Dallas, Texas

“Henry Schein is a purpose-driven Company, and collaborating with Carry The Load helps to advance our mission of supporting communities in which we live and work, including our service members, first responders, and their families,” said Brad Connett, Chief Executive Officer, Henry Schein North America Distribution Group. “It is important that we pause this Memorial Day and commemorate the individuals who protect our freedoms and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Carry The Load is a non-profit organization founded more than a decade ago as a grassroots effort by two Veteran U.S. Navy SEALs to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day and to raise awareness of the sacrifices surrounding men and women in uniform. The program has since turned into a nationwide movement.

“We are grateful to once again partner with the Henry Schein team to recognize and remember our nation’s heroes,” said Stephen Holley, Co-founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Carry The Load. “It is meaningful to see our sponsors, and the countless other companies and organizations involved, come together for the common purpose of honoring the lives of those who have gone before us.”

Henry Schein’s participation in the Carry The Load program aligns with its Veterans Engagement Team (VET), an Employee Resource Group for Veterans and members of the Armed Forces. VET’s mission is to unify Veterans, their families, and Team Schein Members by fostering camaraderie, providing recruitment and advocacy for service members, and giving back to the community. VET helps to establish a forum for members to engage, collaborate, develop, address, and educate the unique challenges and issues that Veterans face, assist the Company’s outreach to Veteran communities to enhance recruitment and onboarding efforts, and support Henry Schein's corporate citizenship philosophy through community engagement.

Carry The Load also complements North American Rescue, a Henry Schein Medical business and part of the Company’s One Government segment, and the leading provider of survivability and casualty-care medical products to the defense and public safety markets.

“Participating in the Memorial May campaign and walking alongside the community to support our military and first responders is very special to us at NAR, especially because many of us are former service members,” said Andy Goldy, Vice President, One Government, Henry Schein. “We’re pleased to join Carry The Load yet again to help restore the true meaning of Memorial Day.”

Additionally, the relationship with Carry The Load reinforces Henry Schein’s commitment to health equity and bridging the gap in Veterans’ access to continuous, accessible, and affordable oral care, along with a continuum of healing services for the mind, body, and soul of Veterans. For example, in 2022, Henry Schein Dental partnered with the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, Oklahoma Dental Association, and Oklahoma Dental Foundation to provide free dental care to Veterans in Oklahoma.

“Oral health is integral to overall health, and expanding access to preventive care and treatment is critical for all individuals, especially for Veterans who may have challenges obtaining routine dental care,” said Dave Steck, Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Dental Group, Henry Schein. “We have a unique position within the dental community to help bridge the gaps in Veterans’ access to oral care, and our partnership with Carry The Load amplifies our dedication to our nation’s heroes.”

Henry Schein One, a software company providing integrated software and services to the dental industry and a subsidiary of Henry Schein, Inc., is also participating in Carry The Load’s Memorial May campaign.

“Our culture was built on the belief that every person is as important as the next, and this belief continues to strengthen with partnerships like Carry The Load,” said Christine King, Co-Executive Chair, Henry Schein One. “We look forward to joining together this Memorial May to pay tribute to America’s heroes.”
