American Dental Hygienists’ Association Teams Up with Colgate® for National Dental Hygiene Month 2022

Posted on Thursday, October 13, 2022

Empowerment theme inspires month-long celebration and educational webinar lineup

The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA®) is proud to announce its partnership with Colgate® Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM) this October.

This year’s focus is built on the theme of Empowerment. With increased awareness of infection prevention and safety protocols, the essential role of dental hygienists moved into the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic. NDHM is an opportunity to honor their commitment to empowering hygienists and their patients with the information needed to achieve and maintain optimal oral health. Throughout the month of October, NDHM will shine a light on the dual purpose of the empowerment theme: to advance the dental hygiene profession, and to support dental hygiene professionals with the tools, confidence and educational resources they need to promote self-care to their patients and the public.

ADHA 2022-2023 President Dawn Dean, RDH, MSDH, says, "The mission of ADHA is to unite and empower dental hygienists to enhance the public’s oral and overall health. Colgate shares this passion and recognizes the power of the dental hygienist, which makes Colgate the perfect partner — for the third year in a row — for National Dental Hygiene Month.”

ADHA established NDHM in 2009 to promote good oral health and celebrate the dedication of dental hygienists across the country. This October, ADHA will advance that message through its partnership with Colgate® Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and a trio of educational webinars. Each webinar will offer continuing education credits and is available at no charge for the entire professional oral health community. “Learn how to Stay Agile in the Face of Change” (Oct. 12), “Be An Empowered Hygienist” (Oct. 19) and “Thrive Across Generations” (Oct. 26). All webinars will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. CT.

“Colgate is a caring, innovative growth company that’s reimagining a healthier future for all. One way we help fulfill our purpose is by empowering dental hygienists with education and products designed to improve the oral health of their patients with proven oral care therapies,” says Barry Reichgott, General Manager, Colgate® Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc. We couldn’t be happier to join forces with ADHA to celebrate the dedication of dental hygienists this October – and always.”

Convergent Dental Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance for First and Only Dental Laser to Aid in the Reduction of Mineral Loss in Dental Enamel

Posted on Wednesday, October 12, 2022

The Solea® All-Tissue Dental Laser is now cleared to aid in the reduction of mineral loss in dental enamel, helping to protect teeth against the effects of acid attack and resulting caries development (cavities).

Convergent Dental, Inc., the power behind the Solea® All-Tissue Dental Laser, today announced it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for a new, exclusive indication. Solea® is now the first and only laser that is cleared to aid in the reduction of mineral loss in dental enamel, helping to protect teeth against the effects of acid attack and resulting caries development (cavities).

“The significance of this announcement cannot be overstated. While there are decades of research supporting the concept that the structure of dental enamel can be altered using low-level laser energy, at specific wavelength and pulse conditions, to make teeth more resistant to tooth decay, Convergent Dental is the first company that has made the treatment accessible to dentists and patients. Convergent Dental is able to offer this treatment because of their unique patented 9.3 µm carbon dioxide (CO2) laser that is based on many years of research,” said John Featherstone, MSc, PhD, a foremost expert in cariology (study of tooth decay) and Professor Emeritus at the UCSF School of Dentistry. “Despite the dental community’s best efforts with fluoride and sealants, more than half of adolescents aged 12-19 have had cavities and the prevalence of dental caries in adults is over 90%. This new Solea® application has the promise to amplify our ability to ward off future dental decay and promote overall oral health.”

“The Solea® platform has proven to be disruptive technology by offering a powerful alternative to the dental drill, scalpel, and use of local anesthetic that appeals to dentists and the patients they treat. The new mineral loss reduction treatment is our latest breakthrough application that supports the expanded use of Solea as a caries prevention tool. This treatment materially expands our total addressable market as it has the potential to be used on most patients treated by the 170,000 general and pediatric dentists in the United States,” said Robert L. Gershon, CEO of Convergent Dental.

The new mineral loss reduction treatment will be made commercially available on a limited basis starting in October of 2022 and fully available in 2023. Convergent Dental also plans to apply for clearance with Health Canada.

Pacific Dental Services Reaches 900 Supported Practices Milestone

Posted on Wednesday, October 12, 2022

The organization supports a variety of practice types, including general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and medical care.

Pacific Dental Services® (PDS) has announced the grand opening of its 900th supported practice, marking yet another significant milestone in the dental support organization’s 28-year history. The newly opened supported practice, Aspen Hill Modern Dentistry in Silver Spring, Md., is the latest in the company’s long line of successful dental practices which has grown PDS into a dental and medical leader in business support services, proven technology and innovation.

“Surpassing 900 supported practices nationwide is not only an extraordinary achievement for Pacific Dental Services, but a testament to our solid foundation upon which dentists can grow successful businesses,” said Stephen E. Thorne IV, the Founder and CEO of PDS. “We’re honored that so many dentists have trusted us to provide the support services to their clinical practicesthat enable outstanding patient care. I look forward to our sustained growth as we continue our efforts in helping clinicians create healthier, happier patients across the nation.”

PDS has established itself as a national leader in educating others on the importance of understanding the oral-systemic link, or what the organization and its supported practices refer to as the Mouth-Body Connection®. Research shows that harmful bacteria and inflammation in the mouth can indicate and even cause systemic conditions throughout the body. Periodontal disease has been connected to systemic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, pregnancy complications that result in pre-term/low-weight births and more. Conversely, the link is often bi-directional. Many systemic diseases, conditions and even medications can affect a patient’s oral health.

Furthermore, PDS was the first dental support organization in the world to implement Epic®, the most widely used comprehensive health records system, into its supported practices. Through Epic, dental practices can easily exchange patient data with medical providers for improved patient care. Integrated health records provide a better understanding of a patient’s overall health, allowing providers to more effectively design a treatment plan to achieve and maintain optimal wellbeing.

All PDS-supported practices are committed to providing clinical excellence through the latest best practices and the use of advanced, proven technology. These clinical treatment tools are at the forefront of improving oral health and overall wellness and include CEREC® CAD/CAM same-day dental restorations, digital X-rays and 3D cone beam computed tomography, soft tissue diode lasers, the VELscope® oral cancer screening system, and blood and salivary diagnostics.

Aspen Hill Modern Dentistry, led by dentist Bobby Mann, DDS, provides comprehensive oral health care and is committed to meeting its patients’ needs. “I am thrilled provide comprehensive oral health care to patients in Silver Spring, and it’s exciting to know that our office is PDS’ 900th supported practice,” said Dr. Mann. “Our patients can expect only the highest level of care from our team, and we are committed to delivering them with the dentistry they want and need.”
