Hinman Dental Meeting’s First Hybrid Conference Attracts 6,986 Attendees

Posted on Tuesday, April 13, 2021

The Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting – one of the nation’s largest dental meetings – hosted its first hybrid meeting March 12-13. The conference attracted nearly 7,000 dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and other dental professionals and industry personnel. A little more than 2,000 attended the meeting in person at the Omni Hotel. The remaining 5,000 attended virtually, participating in courses and events that were both livestreamed and recorded for on-demand access. The theme, “Feel at Home with Hinman,” emphasized the goal to make everyone feel comfortable, whether they attended in person or virtually.

“We couldn’t be happier with the results of our very first hybrid meeting. I believe Hinman created the perfect balance of a safe, in-person educational meeting and a virtual learning environment that was rich in content and promoted active engagement,” said Dr. Robert J. O’Donnell, General Chair of Hinman 2021. “We surveyed our previous attendees and realized last summer that we must offer something for everyone during these challenging times. We have a responsibility to our patients to stay abreast of the latest developments in the dental profession.”

Hinman 2021’s educational program offered more than 45 in-person courses and more than 40 virtual courses, including live Q&A with the speakers. There were 48 world-class speakers featured and 10 in-person participation courses, as well as Hinman’s very first live virtual participation course led by Dr. David Clark. The meeting drew a total of 2,463 dentists, 2,278 hygienists, 419 assistants and 233 office staff. Hinman 2021 also attracted both in-person and virtual exhibitors (473), dental and pre-dental students (143), educators (32), laboratory technicians (22) and other dental guests (54). According to Hinman’s survey, 28% of those who participated were first-time Hinman attendees.

In addition to the courses offered, the Keynote Session was livestreamed and featured Air Force Colonel (Ret.) Nicole Malachowski, the first female Thunderbird pilot and one of the first women to fly modern fighters in combat. More than 800 attendees either viewed it in person or online. The onsite exhibit hall, which hosted 70 industry companies, was also a big draw. It offered eight two-hour timeslots for attendees to choose from on Friday and Saturday and limited attendance to 225 people per two-hour slot to ensure social distancing. Online exhibitors, such as Crest+Oral B, Atlanta Dental Supply, Philips Sonicare, 3M and more, also had traffic with 2,669 total digital visitors.

The in-person courses limited attendance to a maximum of 148 people. Some of the most popular courses included:

- Dr. Harold Crossley’s “Opioid Use, Misuse, Abuse and Addiction: Appropriate Opioid and Non-Opioid Prescribing”

- Dr. Randy Huffines’ “Autoimmune Disease and Dentistry”

- Dr. Thomas McDonald’s “Staging Complex Restorative Cases: Putting Things in the Proper Order”

- Dr. Glenn Maron’s “Blood Thinners”

- Ms. Olivia Wann’s “Top OSHA Violations During the COVID-19 Pandemic”

- Dr. Jay Smith’s “Enhanced Esthetics with Crowns and Veneers”

- Dr. Todd Davis’ “Predictability in Restorative Care”

More than 6,200 new and returning attendees logged into livestreamed courses on Friday, March 12 or Saturday, March 13. The most popular online courses were:

- Mr. Kirk Behrendt’s “Practice Leadership During COVID,” which drew 1,220 participants

- "New Product Demonstrations” attracted 1,171 attendees

- Dr. Kenneth Hargreaves’ “Dental Implications of COVID” drew 1,167 participants

- Dr. Constantine Politis’ “Red, Swollen, Glossy and Boggy: Fixing Those Broken Gums” welcomed 1,098 attendees

- Dr. John Svirsky’s “Mama Said There Would Be Days Like This” attracted 1,043 participants

Hinman’s virtual courses were available on-demand through April 12 and more than 83% of attendees planned to access the courses if they had not already. This year, Hinman also introduced several new elements that were well received. The online networking community, “Networking Powered by Grip,” allowed event participants to connect and schedule meetings. The all-new “Hinman Studio” broadcasted live from Atlanta and featured interviews with industry experts and influencers.

Planning has already begun for Hinman 2022, which will be held March 17-19 at the Georgia World Congress Center and Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta. In the post-meeting attendee survey, Hinman discovered that 87% would like to see a hybrid meeting component continue in the future. “This is exciting to see - the advantage of having some virtual courses is that we can offer Hinman’s unique brand of quality education to even more dentists and dental professionals who may not otherwise experience Hinman due to health concerns, time out of the office or long distances,” added Dr. O’Donnell.

The Hinman Tradition

The Hinman Dental Meeting is designed with a commitment to quality and professionalism and a high regard for the value of continuing education. The Meeting is sponsored by the Hinman Dental Society, a non-profit organization, and excess revenue is invested and gifted in the form of individual scholarships to dental, hygiene and assisting students and in contributions to institutions that foster dental education. Align Technology Supports Efforts to Expand Access to Vaccinations by US Dentists

Posted on Monday, April 12, 2021

Align Technology, Inc., a leading global medical device company engaged in the design and manufacture of the Invisalign system, iTero intraoral scanners, and exocad CAD/CAM services for orthodontic and restorative dentistry, today announced its support to expand access to vaccinations by U.S. dentists.

As seen over the last year, managing health care resources during a pandemic or other health crisis is a complex mix of preparation and execution, with access to responsible care being a key consideration. Federal, state, and local public health officials and health care providers have worked to balance access to COVID-19 testing and healthcare while also meeting other health needs – both routine and unexpected – that continue even during a pandemic. As the number of people vaccinated against COVID-19 increases across the U.S., it is important to review and build on lessons learned in order to optimize responsiveness for future events. One of those lessons is the potential value of using networks of existing, trusted, community-level health care providers when rolling out vaccination plans.

“Since the start of the pandemic, Align’s customers – primarily dentists and orthodontists across the country – have been at the forefront of their profession and healthcare, in general, using social media and virtual appointment and treatment monitoring tools to stay connected with and communicate public health and safety protocols to their patients,” said Julie Coletti, Align Technology senior vice president, chief legal and regulatory officer. “As essential health care providers of ongoing health care services, they have earned their patients’ trust by staying current with the latest health and safety protocols and public health requirements to safely and responsibly treat their patients.”

As trusted, highly qualified health care professionals, dentists can expand the number of care providers that offer immunizations. According to the American Dental Association, 9 percent of Americans (31 million people) see a dentist every year, but do not see a physician1. This is a significant statistic to be considered as part of any future plans for vaccine administration.

Dentists Provide Experienced Care

Before completing dental school and becoming licensed, dentists are professionally trained to administer intraoral and extraoral injections into nerve tissue for local anesthesia – which is arguably more difficult to effectively administer than a vaccine injected into the shoulder muscle. Further, many states permit dentists to administer dermal fillers, Botox® injections, and to start IVs for procedures requiring sedation.

Building on Pandemic Policies

A majority of states have established the foundation for dentist-provided vaccinations by affirmatively permitting dentists to administer COVID-19 vaccinations. On March 16, 2021, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services amended an emergency declaration under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act to authorize additional providers, including dentists and dental students, to vaccinate patients for COVID-19 nationwide regardless of state laws that prevent dentists from doing so.3

Align believes that these recent pandemic-related policies should be the start of additional integration of dentists to vaccinate against other diseases. For example, augmenting the role of the dental profession in routine immunization of oral health related diseases such as Human Papillomavirus (HPV) would increase society’s access to future immunizations.2 Such steps would establish a more robust vaccine program by expanding access at a community level through trusted and competent dentists.

Carbon Named 2021 Supplier Member of the Year by National Association of Dental Laboratories

Posted on Monday, April 12, 2021

Carbon, a leading 3D printing technology company, has been named the 2021 Supplier Member of the Year by the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL). NADL annually recognizes individuals and companies who have made contributions to the dental laboratory profession. Carbon’s continuous innovations in additive manufacturing provide high reliability, accuracy, and throughput for a higher return on investment than conventional production methods.

Carbon delivers a broad range of 3D printed applications for dental laboratories and allows exclusive access to resins and workflows for the production of premium Lucitone Digital Print™ Dentures and Keysplint® Soft Clear night guards. Laboratories are drawn to Carbon’s unique ability to provide over-the-air software updates for continual platform improvements, streamlined remote troubleshooting, and industry-leading customer support. In the 2020 NADL 3D printer survey, Carbon was named #1 in customer satisfaction (as measured by Net Promoter Score) for the second year in a row and was the most preferred 3D printer brand by dental laboratories.

“Our dental lab customers avoid the historical approach of making large investments to purchase equipment that is obsolete within a few short years,” said Todd Ames, vice president, Oral Health. “We reimagined and solved this frustration with a subscription model so that our printers improve over time.” A Carbon subscription includes all scheduled maintenance and a proactive approach to service with remote monitoring and service notifications to precisely predict and prevent customer issues before they impact production.

Carbon’s platform continues to evolve to meet the needs of dental laboratories:

•  Carbon introduced a ground-breaking material and workflow, Lucitone Digital Print, that is exclusive to the Carbon platform and represents a paradigm shift in strength, esthetics, and laboratory efficiency for 3D printed dentures. It is the first 3D printed denture to exceed high impact standards. All dental laboratories are eligible to adopt the Lucitone Digital Print workflow for digital denture fabrication.

•  Carbon released a Denture Automation tool to automatically orient and support Lucitone Digital Print denture bases. This software provides a major improvement in efficiency for Lucitone Digital Print users, saving approximately 80% of the active labor time associated with preparing denture prints.

•  Ongoing over-the-air software updates have provided dental laboratories with increased accuracy; the ability to detect small islands that print separate from the main part, therefore requiring support; a project analysis time decrease of 35%; and a streamlined support workflow.

“We are honored to be recognized by the National Association of Dental Laboratories for our continued innovation and contributions to dental labs. The evolution of our platform is a direct result of us listening to our customers and developing features that help them bring products to market in less time,” concluded Ames.

Imbalance in Gum Bacteria Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease Biomarker

Posted on Monday, April 12, 2021

Older adults with more harmful than healthy bacteria in their gums are more likely to have evidence for amyloid beta — a key biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease — in their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), according to new research from NYU College of Dentistry and Weill Cornell Medicine. However, this imbalance in oral bacteria was not associated with another Alzheimer’s biomarker called tau.

The study, published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring, adds to the growing evidence of a connection between periodontal disease (gum disease) and Alzheimer’s. Periodontal disease — which affects 70 percent of adults 65 and older, according to CDC estimates—is characterized by chronic and systemic inflammation, with pockets between the teeth and gums enlarging and harboring bacteria.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study showing an association between the imbalanced bacterial community found under the gumline and a CSF biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease in cognitively normal older adults,” said Angela Kamer, DDS, PhD, associate professor of periodontology and implant dentistry at NYU College of Dentistry and the study’s lead author. “The mouth is home to both harmful bacteria that promote inflammation and healthy, protective bacteria. We found that having evidence for brain amyloid was associated with increased harmful and decreased beneficial bacteria.”

Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by two hallmark proteins in the brain: amyloid beta, which clumps together to form plaques and is believed to be the first protein deposited in the brain as Alzheimer’s develops, and tau, which builds up in nerve cells and forms tangles.

“The mechanisms by which levels of brain amyloid accumulate and are associated with Alzheimer’s pathology are complex and only partially understood. The present study adds support to the understanding that proinflammatory diseases disrupt the clearance of amyloid from the brain, as retention of amyloid in the brain can be estimated from CSF levels,” said the study’s senior author Mony J. de Leon, EdD, professor of neuroscience in radiology and director of the Brain Health Imaging Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine. “Amyloid changes are often observed decades before tau pathology or the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are detected.”

The researchers studied 48 healthy, cognitively normal adults ages 65 and older. Participants underwent oral examinations to collect bacterial samples from under the gumline, and lumbar puncture was used to obtain CSF in order to determine the levels of amyloid beta and tau. To estimate the brain’s expression of Alzheimer’s proteins, the researchers looked for lower levels of amyloid beta (which translate to higher brain amyloid levels) and higher levels of tau (which reflect higher brain tangle accumulations) in the CSF.

Analyzing the bacterial DNA of the samples taken from beneath the gumline under the guidance of NYU College of Dentistry microbiologist Deepak Saxena, PhD, the researchers quantified bacteria known to be harmful to oral health (e.g. Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Fretibacterium) and pro-oral health bacteria (e.g. CorynebacteriumActinomyces, Capnocytophaga).

The results showed that individuals with an imbalance in bacteria, with a ratio favoring harmful to healthy bacteria, were more likely to have the Alzheimer’s signature of reduced CSF amyloid levels. The researchers hypothesize that because high levels of healthy bacteria help maintain bacterial balance and decrease inflammation, they may be protective against Alzheimer’s.

“Our results show the importance of the overall oral microbiome—not only of the role of ‘bad’ bacteria, but also ‘good’ bacteria — in modulating amyloid levels,” Kamer said. “These findings suggest that multiple oral bacteria are involved in the expression of amyloid lesions.”

The researchers did not find an association between gum bacteria and tau levels in this study, so it remains unknown whether tau lesions will develop later or if the subjects will develop the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. The researchers plan to conduct a longitudinal study and a clinical trial to test if improving gum health — through “deep cleanings” to remove deposits of plaque and tartar from under the gumline — can modify brain amyloid and prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Additional study authors include Smruti Pushalkar, Deepthi Gulivindala, and Kumar Raghava Chowdary Annam of NYU College of Dentistry; Tracy Butler, Yi Li, Lidia Glodzik, and Karla V. Ballman of Weill Cornell Medicine; Patricia Corby of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine; Kaj Blennow of the University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska University; and Henrik Zetterberg of the University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University, and UCL.

This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging (AG035137, AG032554, AG12101, AG022374, AG13616, RF1AG057570, R56AG058913), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (DE023139), and National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (UL1 TR000038), as well as the Alzheimer’s Association (NIRG-12-173937).

Dentsply Sirona Invites Innovative Female Dental Experts to Apply for This Year’s Smart Integration Award

Posted on Monday, April 12, 2021

The application phase for Dentsply Sirona’s second Smart Integration Award starts on Monday, April 12, 2021. The award recognizes visionary treatment concepts and outstanding achievements by women in dentistry and creates a platform for an international network of talented female dental experts.

This year, for the first time, not only female dentists but also female dental technicians are invited to apply by June 28, 2021, with their ideas for collaboration between the practice and the dental laboratory. A jury of Dentsply Sirona executives and renowned external experts will evaluate the entries. The award ceremony is scheduled for the end of the year 2021.

"We want to support women in all areas of dentistry by ensuring we understand their needs and support the development of their skills. The visionary thinking of talented female dental professionals drive innovation in dentistry and help deliver the best patient experience," said Lisa Yankie, Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer & Communications at Dentsply Sirona.

Advancing digital dental technology through a dialogue with users

The Smart Integration Award honors creative ideas and successful treatment concepts of female dental experts. These include, for example, ideas on how to improve the treatment experience for patients during diagnosis and therapy or on how optimally networked and efficient workflows could look in the practices and dental laboratories of tomorrow.

"With the Smart Integration Award, we want to integrate the expertise and visions of female dental experts even more strongly into product development,” said Susanne Schmidinger, Director Global Brand Marketing Enabling Devices at Dentsply Sirona Digital Solutions Marketing. “In many countries, today, over 50 percent of students at dental faculties are women, with a rising tendency. It is important to enter into dialogue with female dentists and especially with young dental professionals. Their creative potential will significantly influence the future of dentistry," Susanne explained. "Dental experts who embrace change and progress are invaluable partners in helping us to develop future innovations that serve the needs of practitioners in every detail."

The award was first introduced by Dentsply Sirona in November 2019. 24 award winners were recognized for their unique success stories and contribution to more efficient and practical workflows at treatment centers.

Dr. Ginal Bilimoria, Smart Integration Award 2019 winner from Auckland, New Zealand, said that, "The concept of the Award intrigued me. It was about efficient, intelligent, and integrated workflows using smart networked processes; something I was interested in. And I love the idea of the Award being open to women from all over the world. When a group of women get together to discuss dentistry, the dynamic is often quite different as we open up and share more easily about our struggles and successes."

How to apply

Entries for the Smart Integration Award 2021 can be submitted as photos, video, text, or sketches. The competition covers the following categories: Imaging, Treatment Centers, Digital, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Dental Conservation, Dental Technology, Hygiene, Implantology, Equipment Management, Design and UX. The Smart Integration Award honors examples of seamlessly connected procedures and workflows, and innovative solutions that improve both the user experience of the practice team and the patient experience.

Dentulu Inc most notably recognized for its free Teledentistry and Mobile Dentistry platform awarded the American Dental Association’s Cellarant “Best of Class ”technology award in 2020 is expanding its partnerships. Dentulu is quickly becoming the most robust dental software platform on the market offering free and low cost software solutions to dental professionals across the globe. Led by a 3rd generation dentist and a team of in house software developers and engineers, Dentulu’s mission is to create a one stop shop for anything dental related with the biggest network of dental providers in the world.

Dentulu’s aspirations to grow its all inclusive platform has been well received by the dental industry and has garnered a series of partnerships ranging from financing companies to health carriers and even supply companies who are all participating in Dentulu’s emerging marketplace. “Our goal is as bold as it is simple, to create one platform that is affordable and available to all dental professionals where they can access the latest technologies, services, and products available on the dental market from anywhere in the world and on any device,” explains Dr. Hakhamian. Dentulu recognizes that dental professionals currently face many challenges as they navigate the changing landscape of the dental industry and that managing these challenges is an integral part of running a successful dental practice.

Dentulu’s concept received a major boost with the help of Google and investors, mostly comprised of Dentists and Dental specialists, who helped complete its initial multi-million dollar seed round. Now, with the help of new institutional investors, Dentulu is expanding its services to include artificial intelligence, diagnostic tools, communication tools, and office management services beyond its free offerings. Dentulu is also working directly with major retailers to help dental offices acquire new patients through its mobile app and on its website.

Dentulu’s innovations do not stop with its software. Dentulu is also launching unique products such as the “MouthCam,” a consumer intraoral camera that is less than $99 that allows remote patient monitoring of dental patients in the comfort of their own home. “While we cannot currently perform many dental procedures through the phone, we can utilize advanced technologies to help dental professionals acquire more patients, run more efficient practices, and find the resources they need to have more successful and profitable dental careers,” continues Dr. Hakhamian.

Dentulu will begin announcing a series of partnerships in April and May and will launch at least one new product or service every quarter as it begins to move towards its mission to unite the dental industry with its award winning team and technology. Dental professionals can register for free on Dentulu and participate in its open platform and begin using many of its free features or upgrade their account to take advantage of its low cost software solutions on the Dentulu mobile app available on both Android and IOS phones or directly on the web at www.dentulu.com
