Henry Schein CEO Stanley M. Bergman Submits Letter to Congressional Subcommittee Supporting Expanded Covid Vaccine Distribution

Posted on Thursday, April 22, 2021

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq:HSIC) Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Stanley M. Bergman submitted a letter to the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, urging federal officials to include primary care physicians and other office-based practitioners, including dentists, in the effort to expand COVID vaccination nationwide.

“More effectively activating the vast network of physicians and dentists in the U.S. to join the fight to vaccinate Americans is critical at this moment in the country’s vaccination efforts,” Mr. Bergman wrote. “Not only are [these healthcare professionals] capable of helping individuals overcome hesitancy, but their offices span zip codes across the U.S. in ways that other vaccine distribution systems do not. From inner cities and suburbs to rural areas and farmland, doctors are a part of almost every community. Their administration of the annual flu shot demonstrates that doctors have the infrastructure to deliver the Covid-19 shot, especially as public health authorities increasingly suggest a long-term need for booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“We urge the Administration and HHS to consider providing office-based practitioners, regardless of in which state they practice, meaningful access to the vaccine as part of our vaccine rollout,” Mr. Bergman wrote.

The letter was submitted as a statement for the record in conjunction with the Select Subcommittee’s hearing featuring testimony from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, and Chief Science Officer for COVID Response Dr. David Kessler.

A Big Win for Baylor Basketball and the Dental Lifeline Network

Posted on Thursday, April 22, 2021

Thanks to Keating Dental Lab, the Baylor Men’s basketball team, and the generosity of a dental industry marketing professional, Dental Lifeline Network (DLN) was a big winner in this year’s NCAA tourney.

Each year, Keating Dental Lab sponsors an NCAA Tournament bracket challenge, free to enter and open to all, with a grand prize of $3,000 for the winning bracket.

This year, Derek Van Volkom, who works for Lanmark360, an advertising agency in the dental space, entered for the first time. “I was on the Keating website and I thought, why not? I picked a few long shots like Oral Roberts University and UCLA, and of course, Baylor to win it all.”

Derek won the Keating bracket challenge—and donated the entire $3,000 winner’s check to the Dental Lifeline Network (DLN). “I decided to pay it forward and be charitable to an organization that does so much for dentistry—the industry that has supported my company and me personally for over 20 years,” said Derek. “It was like found money, and the DLN is a very worthy cause. It’s a nonprofit that provides free dental services to veterans, disabled, and elderly patients who don’t have insurance.”

“I was super excited to see this year’s winner donate the prize money to a great cause,” said Shaun Keating, CDT, of Keating Dental Lab. Coincidentally, Keating Labs has supported DLN for years, donating hundreds of cases to their Donated Dental Services program.

“Our lab does a lot with veterans' groups and we always like to give back, so it’s great to see the winnings go to such an amazing organization dedicated to dentistry,” said Shaun.

“It was an amazing tournament, and donating the money just makes it a win-win for everyone,” said Derek.

Align Technology Expands Global Operations

Posted on Thursday, April 22, 2021

Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN), a leading global medical device company engaged in the design and manufacture of the Invisalign system, iTero intraoral scanners, and exocad CAD/CAM services for orthodontic and restorative dentistry, today announced plans to open a new manufacturing facility in Poland to address the large and underpenetrated market opportunity in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, which represents over 5 million annual orthodontic case starts and more than 150 million EMEA consumers who can potentially benefit from a healthier, beautiful smile. The new Wroclaw plant will be Align’s first in the EMEA region and its third plant worldwide, joining Juarez, Mexico and Ziyang, China.

The new facility is expected to begin supplying customers in the EMEA region in early 2022. The investment is part of Align’s strategy to bring its operational facilities closer to its customers. Align works directly with doctors - dentists and orthodontists - to provide them with the Invisalign system of clear aligners to prescribe to their patients to straighten their teeth and transform their smiles.

“I’m excited to announce plans to open our first aligner manufacturing facility in the EMEA region, and third globally. This significant investment underscores our commitment to the more than 62,700 Invisalign trained doctors and their patients in the EMEA region and extends our local operations in the region that include treatment planning facilities (TREAT), based in Poland, Germany and Spain,” said Emory Wright, Align senior vice president, Global Operations.

Align Technology is the world’s largest 3D printing manufacturer, with as many as 700,000 unique aligner parts produced per day in its manufacturing facilities across the globe. The Invisalign system is leveraged by over 200,000 Invisalign trained dentists and orthodontists. More than 9.6 million patients have been treated with the Invisalign system worldwide, including 2 million patients in the EMEA region as of the fourth quarter of 2020.

"We are proud to open Align’s first manufacturing facility in the EMEA region. The state-of-the-art EMEA plant in Wroclaw is expected to add more than 2,500 jobs to Align by the end of 2025, making it the company’s largest investment in EMEA to date. Align has been expanding its presence in the region for the past 20 years by adding new offices, building strong regional and local teams, and expanding digital treatment planning facilities in three different markets – with plans for further expansion. This new investment will allow us to deliver on our ongoing commitment to Invisalign doctors in the region to support them with more dedicated, customized support, as well as quicker turnaround and delivery times,” added Markus Sebastian, Align senior vice president and managing director, EMEA.

“The development of Polish industry, using innovative technologies, is one of the key priorities of the Polish government, which has been highlighted in the Industrial Development Policy of Poland. We continue to create the best possible conditions to allow development of domestic companies, as well as encourage foreign capital to invest in our country. We consistently support investment in digitalization. Poland has some of the world's best specialists in digitization and support instruments, such as dedicated economic zones or the government grant program that significantly simplify the procedure for business development. We are pleased that another investor - Align Technology, has recognized these opportunities and decided to expand their presence in the EMEA region by planning to open the largest 3D printing and manufacturing plants in Poland,” said Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Gowin, Minister for Development, Labour and Technology.

“I am very pleased with Align Technology's decision to further develop its operations in Poland. The new project has a huge potential in terms of employment, with approximately 2,500 new jobs expected to be created. Digital transformation has changed the face of many industries and has found its place in the medical sector, which is best proved by Align, a company that uses 3D printing in production. It is worth emphasizing that the interest of the medical industry in the Polish market is still growing, as confirmed by inquiries of foreign companies coming to Polish Investment & Trade Agency (PAIH), with six medical investment projects and another five already underway. Technologies used in the medical sector are now very much needed by everyone,” added Krzysztof Drynda, Chairman of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency.

The new Align manufacturing facility will open in early 2022, with plans to support all EMEA Invisalign case shipments by 2024. The multi-million-dollar investment by Align is one of the larger projects by an international company in the greater Wroclaw area.

Used to treat minor to complex types of malocclusions, Invisalign clear aligners are replaced every one or two weeks, depending on a doctor’s recommendation, gradually moving teeth towards the projected final position.

Glidewell Launches Implant Business Essentials Continuum

Posted on Tuesday, April 20, 2021

The Glidewell Implant Business Essentials Continuum is designed to train dentists how to incorporate essential business, leadership and practice management principles into their implant services. With guidance from leading instructors in their respective fields, covering everything from financial planning and tax strategies, to patient communications and case acceptance, to social media presence and ethics, attendees will leave with ties to a network of advanced practitioners and a completely original education that will put them ahead in the field of implant dentistry.

While Glidewell is known for offering a wide range of clinical courses, this continuum will focus more on practice development and business skills that doctors are not often exposed to in traditional continuing education curriculum on implant treatment. This shift in focus will give doctors the opportunity to develop a truly well-rounded education that will help them grow their practice as well as their confidence.

The continuum runs from October 2021 to January 2022 and will feature 11 online courses, culminating in a full day of events at the Glidewell Campus in Irvine, California, which will include an array of interactive courses, a tour of the largest dental technology campus in the world, and a yacht cruise in Newport Harbor. Attendees will earn a total of 23 CEUs when they complete the continuum, and a special early bird package price will allow dentists to save $600 if they sign up before July 31, 2021.

In order to deliver a genuine, deep study into such a wide range of topics, Glidewell is partnering with the Misch International Implant Institute for its world-renowned implant expertise, the Levin Group for its 35 years of experience in practice management consulting, and Aprio for its industry-leading financial advisory services. These partners bring their expertise to the curriculum so that doctors will be able to learn the secrets of implant business essentials from proven experts.

"Doctors invest significant time and money in learning the clinical skills needed for implant dentistry," said Dr. Neil Park, vice president of clinical affairs at Glidewell. "But mastering management and communication skills is just as important in establishing a successful implant practice. In partnership with top experts in the field, we have put together this program to fill in those important non-clinical skills."

BIOLASE and EdgeEndo Announce Plans to Develop New EdgePRO Laser-Assisted

Posted on Tuesday, April 20, 2021

BIOLASE, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOL), the global leader in dental lasers, and EdgeEndo, a global leader in commercializing endodontic products, announced in association with the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) Annual Meeting beginning on April 21, 2021, the co-development of EdgePRO, a next-generation Laser-Assisted Microfluidic Irrigation device for endodontists. This new Microfluidic Irrigation device is being developed to offer a solution for endodontists seeking more from their current cleaning and disinfection techniques, such as sodium hypochlorite, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, chlorhexidine or 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 irrigation solutions. BIOLASE anticipates submitting a premarket notification (510(k)) to the Food and Drug Administration for the co-developed device in the second quarter of 2021. The device is not currently available for sale in the United States.

The EdgePRO Laser-Assisted Microfluidic Irrigation device will build upon BIOLASE’s patented and proven platform that has been shown to significantly improve debridement1, cleaning and disinfection up to 99%2-4, and removes smear layer 5-9 and biofilms10,11 using the most advanced laser light sound technology with traditional irrigation solutions.

“We had been researching advanced Microfluidic Irrigation technologies in the high-tech endodontic irrigation market for several years and concluded that BIOLASE would be an ideal business partner for EdgeEndo,” said Dr. Charles Goodis, DDS, EdgeEndo founder and CEO. “Their proprietary Waterlase Er,Cr:YSGG technology has proven to be clinically effective in endodontics over the last 20 years. This is reinforced by the publication of more than 75 research papers and the technology’s use by thousands of dentists around the world to enhance clinical outcomes. Partnering with BIOLASE will provide us with access to an endodontic-specific, minimally invasive technology, with proprietary and patented radial firing tip technology to incorporate into our EdgePRO product. We are excited about this collaboration and in the near term look forward to developing a technology for endodontists that has the potential to improve patient experiences and clinical outcomes.”

BIOLASE President and CEO, John Beaver adds, “We are very pleased with the efforts thus far on the design and performance of the EdgePRO as our first OEM laser product. Approximately 75% of all endodontists routinely use EdgeEndo endodontic files, burs, and bioceramics, providing reach and relationships with the endodontists that will further our goal of making Waterlase technology the standard of care in endodontics. This allows BIOLASE to focus its commercial channels on other specialties, such as periodontics and pediatrics, in addition to the approximately 200,000 general dentists in the United States. We look forward to a long and beneficial relationship with EdgeEndo.”

Supporting the needs of endodontists is part of BIOLASE's continued effort to help improve patient experiences and outcomes, while also educating providers on the benefits of dental lasers. This announcement comes on the heels of the recently developed Waterlase Endo Academy, open to all Waterlase endodontists. Endless Possibilities

Owing to the ever-changing dental technology market, DTX Studio Clinic was developed to support clinicians’ current and future needs. As an open software solution, it connects to KaVo’s imaging devices, but also accepts images from any X-ray device, intraoral optical scanner, desktop scanner or camera, supporting open industry standard formats, like DICOM, PNG, BMP, JPG, STL, PLY or the TWAIN protocol. Full support for Windows® PC and Mac operating systems, make DTX Studio Clinic an ideal fit for any practice.

Mac Compatibility

To better serve Mac users, DTX Studio Clinic combines elegance and intuitiveness with a native MacOS version. The consistency in the DTX Studio Clinic user interface, operation, and appearance provide a feeling of familiarity regardless of the imaging devices being used or the treatments being planned.

Dr. Pascal Kunz, Vice President for Digital Solutions, said:

“Nobel Biocare and KaVo Imaging, both innovators and pioneers in computer-assisted surgeries and dental imaging, have joined forces to create the DTX Studio ecosystem. DTX Studio Clinic establishes a new benchmark in dental imaging. It offers continuity in diagnostics, treatments, and treatment workflows by following a truly open approach. It invites industry partners to collaborate and master all imaging modalities in one place, for all dental specialties. Our goal is to simplify the interaction with imaging, digital technology, and make relevant information easily accessible for more efficient and predictable treatments.”
