Dentsply Sirona’s new Surefil one: An innovation in restorative filling materials

Dentsply Sirona’s new Surefil one: An innovation in restorative filling materials

Direct posterior restorations make up two thirds of all direct restorations in a dental practice1 and composite resin is the preferred material of choice for these restorations.2 Yet, one out of four cases can be defined as challenging due to isolation control, patient compliance or the margin being sub-gingival.3 Due to the technique sensitivity of resin-based materials, composites are not the material of choice for these situations. Surefil one from Dentsply Sirona now offers an ideal alternative for these situations by providing the convenience of a glass ionomer with the durability of a composite. This new material will be available in the US starting October 12th.

Charlotte, October 1st, 2020. A growing number of patients today are requesting amalgam free restorations for esthetic and environmental reasons. The alternatives to amalgam are resin-based composites or glass ionomers. Composites require complete isolation throughout the entire procedure and have a sensitive adhesive technique to ensure maximum adhesion is obtained between the composite and tooth structure. Because the composite procedure can be time consuming and isolation is critical, it is not the preferred material for certain clinical situations. Alternatively, many glass ionomers available today are not indicated for use as a permanent restorative material due to their inferior mechanical properties. This can lead to premature failure and required re-treatment at the expense of the clinician resulting in patient dissatisfaction and practice inefficiencies.

Surefil one, an innovative filling material, now offers an ideal alternative. Procedures can be performed quicker than using composites with a more durable outcome than glass ionomers.4 Surefil one is available in five shades: Bleach White, A1, A2, A3, and A3.5.

Convenience and Durability

For the first time ever, the simplicity of a glass ionomer and the durability of a resin-based composite have been combined to create an entirely

new material class, the first ever self-adhesive composite hybrid.

Surefil one has an unlimited depth of cure - providing assurance in very deep cavities that a complete cure will be obtained without layering. It can also be light cured, so the restoration can be finished and polished immediately after surface light curing. Studies have demonstrated that Surefil one restorations are as durable as a composite: in chewing simulations, it was shown that after 500,000 cycles, no evidence of fractures or damage was present while the glass ionomers tested in this chewing simulation partially showed fractures after fewer than 100,000 chewing cycles.5

Shorter treatment time due to faster, more efficient handling

Fewer steps in the procedure make the restorative treatment even more efficient and faster. With Surefil one, dentists can fill a cavity in just one layer, without etching or bonding, minimizing the window of risk for when contamination can occur during the procedure.

The reduced procedure time is a clinical advantage especially in cases where isolation is a challenge or patient compliance is not ideal.

Surefil one joins the trusted Class II Solution family

Surefil one now joins the Class II Total Practice Solution from Dentsply Sirona as the solution for challenging Class II situations. Acknowledging that the clinical requirements for a successful Class II restoration change based on the situation, the treatment recommendations differ. In challenging situations when isolation becomes the critical factor in determining success of the restoration, the Class II Total Practice Solution with Surefil one from Dentsply Sirona is an excellent solution.

“Surefil one is a great innovation for the dental practice” said Dr. Chris Campbell of Columbia, SC. “One of the things we look for as dentists are products that solve real-world issues that we encounter each and every day. Surefil one allows us to predictably restore teeth in compromised clinical situations. Whether it’s difficult isolation, a challenging patient, or any other situation that is inherently unpredictable, Surefil one rises to the task unlike any restorative material we’ve had up to this point in our profession”.

Conversely, when the situation is ideal, in approximately 3 out of 4 cases6 , adaptation at the floor of the proximal box becomes the critical factor in determining success of the restoration. In those scenarios, the Dentsply Sirona Class II Total Practice solution with market leading SDR flow+ material is recommended.

Posted on Thursday, October 1, 2020

Meet the founder of two institutes and a university bachelor’s program, a front runner of advanced dental surgical techniques, an advocate for the oral care of 28,000 children and counting, the mind behind 100-plus medical devices and technology, an engineer of empowerment, and a unifier of oral health and medicine. They are Lucy Hobbs.

Dr. Lucy Hobbs Taylor earned her dental degree in 1866, advancing equality for her gender. She defied nearly a decade of resistance, leading with clinical proficiency and innovative thinking; then she mentored others to do the same. Benco Dental’s Lucy Hobbs Project® annually honors women in dentistry who personify that same spirit.

“Each year I am awestruck by the women being considered for this honor. Benco Dental unites women from every sector of the profession through The Lucy Hobbs Project, and creates a network that recognizes, fosters and celebrates that excellence,” said Lindsay Pross, Events and Marketing Operations Manager for the nation’s largest independent dental distributor.

The six Lucy Hobbs Project Award recipients for 2020, below, will be featured in the Incisal Edge magazine winter issue and invited to participate in the new Driving Dentistry Forward podcast hosted by Chuck Cohen and Rick Cohen, Managing Directors of Benco Dental and founders of Incisal Edge.

Anatotemp® Launches Anatotemp SC Line of Anatomic Dental Implant Healing Abutment-Digital Impression Body Combination

Posted on Thursday, October 1, 2020

Today, Anatotemp is announcing the introduction of the Anatotemp SC family of digitally scannable anatomic dental implant healing abutments. The Anatotemp line of anatomic healing abutments have become the off-the-shelf solution for creating ideal gingival emergence profile during dental implant treatment.

Now, with the introduction of the Anatotemp SC product line, the healing abutment will not only create ideal gingival contour but can also be used as a scan body during the digital dental implant process. No longer does the healing abutment need to be removed to place an impression post/body. Anatotemp SC does both.

“We are very excited to announce the introduction of the Anatotemp SC line of components. Saving four restorative steps and a treatment appointment is a huge plus for both the clinician and patient” said Terry B. Philibin DDS, MS, MBA, Anatotemp President and CEO.

“Combining an anatomic healing abutment and impression body all in one component provides exactly what dental implant clinicians have been asking for.”

DTA and Lanmark360 Social Media Campaign

Posted on Thursday, October 1, 2020

The Dental Trade Alliance, in partnership with Lanmark360, a full-service healthcare agency, have created an engaging social media campaign designed to help patients return to their dental practices.

The campaign, designed for dental practices to display on a variety of social media platforms, was developed based on the findings of a recent nationwide patient survey. Many dental patients indicated a willingness—and desire—to return for routine care.

“We found over half of the respondents had fallen behind on their dental care due to canceled appointments,” says Howard Klein, Lanmark360 President. “Over 50% of respondents say they intend to return to their dentist for a routine cleaning within the next three months.”

The social media campaign, which includes short videos and suggested posts, reminds patients that it’s time to come back: “If you’re ready, we’re ready.”

“Now that COVID-19 quarantine restrictions are easing up throughout the US, more dental practices are once again open for business,” says Gregory Chavez, CEO of the Dental Trade Alliance. “This social media campaign is a simple and effective way for dentists to remind patients that it’s time to make an appointment.”
