AJK Engineering introduces Splatter Reducing Disposable Prophy Angle

Posted on Friday, October 16, 2020

Lotus DPA is a unique, innovative, revolutionary, and patented product that addresses a long term unmet need for the dental hygiene industry. The splatter created by the rotating cup has been a chief safety concern among the hygienists due to HIV and other airborne viruses. Dentists are concerned with the increasing cost of disposable DPA.

Lotus DPA addresses performance, safety, and cost issues. To make it splatter-free, the Prophy Angle is designed with the following essential features:

-The dimple design on the outside of the cup to retain saliva.

-The splatter guard that eliminates the accumulated saliva from the outside of the cup during each rotation.

-Precise positioning of the splatter guard and a unique shape with a thin blade that would remain stiff during the procedure, stay in constant contact with the cup and yet be flexible enough for the patient comfort and effective splatter reduction.

-Transparent cup design for better visibility and repeated paste loading

AJK Engineering is a highly creative Dental Product Design and Development company focusing on design, research, development, and manufacturing. We are passionate about innovating unique, ingenious, and revolutionary products that address the needs of the dental industry concerning performance, safety, and cost issues.

ADEA, Henry Schein and FEMA Join Forces on Mask Donation for U.S. Dental Schools and Programs

Posted on Thursday, October 15, 2020

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA), Henry Schein, Inc. and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have joined forces for an initiative that will provide dental schools and allied dental education programs with KN95 masks to be used for patient care.

In response to COVID-19, ADEA worked with Henry Schein to coordinate FEMA’s donation of 3M-made KN95 masks to ADEA in support of the resumption of routine dental care and the delivery of oral health education services. The distribution of the much-needed masks comes as many dental schools and allied dental programs return to patient care, which has been significantly curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Henry Schein will distribute the FEMA-donated masks to dental schools and programs within the United States that request an allotment from the ADEA. Dental schools and allied dental programs that want masks are only being charged by ADEA for shipping and handling—not the masks themselves. Neither ADEA nor Henry Schein is profiting financially from this initiative.

“We believe this is a great example of how public and private organizations can join together to serve our community of dental educators and oral health professionals,” said ADEA President and CEO Karen West, D.M.D., M.P.H. “ADEA is committed to helping our member institutions, and the dental education community at large, successfully navigate the rapidly changing landscape before us. Providing these KN95 masks is one crucial step in supporting safe dental care. Working together, we can meet today’s challenges and further strengthen dental education.”

In total, ADEA and Henry Schein are distributing close to 3 million masks to 290 U.S. dental schools and allied dental programs.“We are privileged that ADEA approached us for assistance to secure and distribute the KN95 masks to dental schools and dental education programs,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman and CEO of Henry Schein, Inc. “As part of Henry Schein’s dedication to ‘helping health happen,’ this partnership represents our mutual commitment to protect the health, safety, and well-being of students and faculty, as well as the patients they serve.”

The #Masks4DentEd initiative is ADEA’s latest effort to help its members and other stakeholders in academic dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic. ADEA has also created a complimentary online Pandemic Resource Guide for Dental Education that provides information and lists of resources related to student affairs and enrollment management. Additionally, the association has produced multiple webinars providing guidance for dental educators and administrators.

Dr. West expressed her gratitude to FEMA, for supplying the masks, and Henry Schein, for working with ADEA to distribute the masks to eligible U.S.-based schools and programs that request them.

“This project would not have been a success without the support of both FEMA and Henry Schein,” Dr. West said. “I thank them for their invaluable help and their commitment to the dental education community.”

As the sole national organization representing academic dentistry, ADEA is the voice of dental education. ADEA members include all 78 U.S. and Canadian dental schools, more than 800 allied and advanced dental education programs, more than 50 corporations and approximately 18,000 individuals. ADEA provides its members access to exclusive information and resources, as well as multiple leadership and professional development opportunities.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) today announced the winners of the annual Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD) Faculty and Practice Awards. The awards are supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Colgate and are presented to educators and clinicians who have made significant contributions to implement and advance EBD. The winners will be recognized at a virtual booth hosted by the ADA Science and Research Institute at the 2020 ADA FDC Virtual Connect Conference, a joint meeting of the ADA and Florida Dental Association.

Rajesh V. Lalla, B.D.S., Ph.D., will receive the 2020 EBD Accomplished Faculty Award. Dr. Lalla is a professor and associate dean for research at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. He developed as well as teaches the school’s course on evidence-based decision-making, which emphasizes experiential learning and student participation with minimal lecturing. Dr. Lalla has published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, including 23 systematic reviews and evidence-based guidelines such as the 2020 clinical practice guideline for the management of mucositis secondary to cancer therapy published in the journal Cancer.

Satheesh Elangovan, B.D.S., D.Sc., D.M.Sc., will receive the 2020 EBD Mid-Career Faculty Award. Dr. Elangovan is a professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, where he teaches EBD in his lectures, seminars, and case presentations of pre-doctoral students and periodontics residents. To address deficits in EBD education, Dr. Elangovan was involved in the creation of online resource centers with interactive exercises that teach how to critically appraise scientific literature. He serves as co-assistant director of his college’s dental student research program, where he has mentored numerous students on EBD projects that resulted in conference presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Elangovan has published more than 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including systematic reviews and critical summaries. He currently serves as an associate editor of the PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry Channel from Elsevier and the ADA.

Christopher Smiley, D.D.S., will receive the 2020 EBD Practice Award. Dr. Smiley is a full-time practicing general dentist at Smiley Family Dentistry in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Michigan Dental Association. In this role, he has overseen the publication of tutorial articles to assist readers in applying the EBD process in clinical practice. This initiative includes presenting a monthly column called “10-Minute EBD” that demonstrates how EBD can improve decision-making across a variety of clinical topics. Dr. Smiley served as a co-author of the ADA’s clinical practice guideline on the nonsurgical treatment of chronic periodontitis as well as the guideline’s associated systematic review.

Dr. Loree Bolin Receives 2020 American Dental Association Humanitarian Award

Posted on Wednesday, October 14, 2020

Loree Bolin, D.D.S., of Edmonds, Wash., is the recipient of the 2020 American Dental Association (ADA) Humanitarian Award. Each year, the Humanitarian Award honors an ADA member for improving the quality of life and oral health of individuals in the U.S. and internationally over a period of 10 years or more. Dr. Bolin will be honored at the ADA FDC Virtual Connect Conference, a joint meeting of the ADA and Florida Dental Association, held Oct. 15-17.

Dr. Bolin is the founder of the Health & Hope Foundation, which aims to break the cycle of poverty for women and children in Tanzania, by providing healthcare, education and economic opportunity. Prior to founding the Health & Hope Foundation in 2014, Dr. Bolin worked in private practice family dentistry, providing her with a groundwork of skills to provide aid internationally – and eventually start her own foundation.

“Dentistry gave me skills and opportunity to provide care and help lift up ultra-poor families in the developing world,” said Dr. Bolin. “Serving as an international volunteer dentist beginning in 2007, I discovered that women and vulnerable, often orphaned, children are at the greatest risk. It seemed that the care I was delivering was merely scratching the surface and not addressing many of the underlying problems that placed this population at risk.”

The Health & Hope Foundation extends to ensure that children, especially girls, are able to get an education. To do this, the foundation opened the Tumaini Tutor School, which provides free tutored instruction six days per week. To further support women, Dr. Bolin established the Women’s Business Program to offer business training and mentorship in product selection, hygiene, marketing and customer service and savings.

First established in 2008, the ADA Humanitarian Award annually honors an ADA member for creating a legacy of volunteer works, and is one of the ADA’s highest honors. Criteria for the Humanitarian Award include significantly improving the quality of life and oral health, demonstrating significant leadership and serving as an inspiration to others both in the dental profession and the general population.

“I was impressed not only for her international volunteerism, but also by her Health & Hope Foundation, which has helped countless people around the world and served as an inspiration to dentists and staff,” said ADA President Chad P. Gehani, D.D.S. “I am glad our member dentists will now get a chance to learn more about her work and perhaps even aspire to follow in her footsteps. Dr. Bolin is a shining testament to the gift that dentistry provides in her promotion of not only oral health, but also overall health."

The ADA Humanitarian Award includes a $10,000 donation to the Health & Hope Foundation.

In addition to Tanzania, Dr. Bolin has served as a volunteer dentist in the Philippines, Honduras, Haiti, Uganda and Nepal. A ten-time Ironman triathlete, she competes and lives by these three mantras and credits them as she moves forward in service: “Strength. Power. Focus. Go.” “Smooth as silk, tough as nails.” and “YES, we can do this!”

Dr. Leo E. Rouse Receives 2020 American Dental Association Distinguished Service Award

Posted on Wednesday, October 14, 2020

The American Dental Association (ADA) will award Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., with the ADA Distinguished Service Award at ADA FDC Virtual Connect Conference 2020, a joint meeting of the ADA and Florida Dental Association. The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor given by the ADA Board of Trustees.

“Dentistry and patients are important to me because I am committed to ensuring that oral health is fully integrated to systemic health,” said Dr. Rouse. “I am a champion of interprofessional education and collaborative practice.”

Dr. Rouse began his dental career with a dental degree from Howard University College of Dentistry and transitioned to serving a quarter of a century in the U.S. Army as a military dentist and leader. While in the U.S. Army, Dr. Rouse continued to climb the ladder, eventually assuming the role of commander and chief operating officer of the U.S. Army Dental Command. In this role, Dr. Rouse ensured the oral and overall health of more than 4,000 personnel – including officers, enlisted soldiers and civilians.

After completing his service to the U.S. Army, Dr. Rouse shifted to the world of academia as a faculty member in the dental science division at the Army Medical Department Center and School at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where he eventually served as chief of the division. From there, Dr. Rouse made it back to his alma mater, Howard University, ultimately becoming dean of the Howard University College of Dentistry. Because of his work in academia, Dr. Rouse was recruited by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), to which he previously served on staff as senior scholar in residence, liaison to the council of deans, chair of the ADEA Gies Foundation board of directors, as well as board president. He presently acts as an ADEA consultant, and is also the president-elect of the American College of Dentists (ACD), assuming the role of president of the ACD this month.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am proud to present the ADA’s Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Leo Rouse,” said ADA President Chad P. Gehani, D.D.S. “On top of being the first African American board president of the ADEA, he was commander of the U.S. Army Dental Command, becoming its first African American leader, educating and inspiring thousands of American dentists to serve their country and communities.”

Dr. Rouse is honored to receive the ADA Distinguished Service Award.

“It’s been a wonderful life,” said Dr. Rouse. “I love being a dentist because in my professional career I have been fortunate to work in an environment that improves the overall health of patients in a military, civilian and academic setting. “I have also been blessed as an educator to help influence the next generation of dentists in their contributions to improve the overall health of patients.”

Carestream Dental is proud to have provided six RVG 6200 intraoral sensors, as well as software and support, to outfit Mercy Ships and its newest ship, the Global Mercy. Despite the global health crisis, work has continued on the Global Mercy, the world’s largest NGO hospital ship. In fact, Mercy Ships, a faith-based global organization that provides surgical care to those in need, has shared a first look at the ship ahead of its maiden voyage to Africa in 2021.

“The Global Mercy will be a true modern marvel—a fully custom-built hospital ship with customized instruments, state-of-the-art technology and highly-trained talent of a modern hospital,” Rosa Whitaker, president of Mercy Ships, said. “It also represents a unique call-to-action for anyone called to serve, and it presents the opportunity for people to use their skill set to positively impact global healthcare.”

With their excellent image resolution that provide clear digital images for faster diagnoses, the RVG 6200s will support Mercy Ships’ onshore dental clinic. The sensors come with a number of user-defined image processing tools, allowing volunteers to customize images according to their specifications for enhanced diagnosis and ease of use.

“‘Changing Lives’ is a major pillar of Carestream Dental’s mission,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D. chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “We’ve certainly seen how good oral health can lead to better overall health; so we know that these RVG 6200s aren’t just being used to quickly identify and treat dental caries, they’re changing lives as well.”

Once launched, the Global Mercy, which will be staffed by 600 volunteer medical and dental healthcare workers, will provide a safe and clean surgical environment to various African nations. It’s expected that the ship will see 150,000 patients over the course of its anticipated 50-year lifespan. In addition to state-of-the-art surgical facilities, the ship will include educational space so local doctors can be trained on the latest techniques and best practices.

This isn’t the first time Carestream Dental has partnered with Mercy Ships. In 2017, it donated RVG 6200s for use on the Africa Mercy—the organization's current flagship—on its mission to Cameroon.

IDS Organizers Optimistic About 2021

Posted on Monday, October 12, 2020

The uncertainty caused by the ongoing Corona crisis is also noticeable within the dental industry. Over the past months, together with Koelnmesse, the partners of the 39th edition, IDS 2021, the GFDI mbH, a commercial company of the VDDI, the association and its bodies have intensely occupied themselves with the safety criteria, which makes the physical presence of an international trade fair like IDS possible. Ultimately, different solutions were developed jointly by all of the parties concerned and an alternative concept was drawn up for the trade fair format, IDS.

A current visitor and exhibitor survey by Koelnmesse shows that many exhibitors will definitely participate in March 2021. 1,276 companies have already confirmed their participation to-date. Beyond this, the conditions of a criteria and quality catalogue, which are among others governed by the current safety regulations in Germany, are fulfilled. The following concept-related measures will be implemented to ensure the successful conduction of the 39th edition of IDS in March 2021.

- The duration of the 39th IDS is being reduced from five down to four days (from Wednesday, 10.03. to Saturday, 13.03.2021).

- The design of the fair grounds and the hall allocation will be completely replanned in order to safely distribute more than 1,200 exhibitors in line with the Corona protection regulations and to organise the visitor traffic with several entrances and larger safety distances.

- A generous layout with wider aisles, additional circulation, food service and resting areas.

- Koelnmesse additionally offers hybrid tools on a digital platform, in order to expediently enhance the physical presence at the trade fair. This also enables guests or exhibitors from abroad to participate in IDS 2021.

VDDI Chairman, Mark Stephen Pace, commented in this connection: “Several working committees comprising of our members have in close coordination with the board and advisory board and with the association's office, undertaken everything possible to make the 39th edition of IDS possible in spite of the current difficult framework conditions. It was not an easy task to come to an agreement regarding the new concept for IDS. During the session yesterday, we strove to find the best solution and many aspects were controversially debated. I am delighted that we now have the certainty and can all work jointly on offering the 39th IDS 2021 as a platform for the dental industry in spite of the restrictions brought about by the crisis. The VDDI Association has mastered many challenges in its meanwhile 104-year history and will proactively shape the current crisis.”

And Oliver Frese, Executive Director and COO of Koelnmesse added: "We are delighted about the positive commitment of the dental industry and are well-prepared for staging IDS. In compliance with the provisions of the Corona Protective Ordinance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and in close coordination with the authorities in Cologne, we have developed our extensive hygiene and safety concept #B-SAFE4business, which comprises of a host of measures that interlock seamlessly and govern the interaction among all people present at the trade fair. In close cooperation with our partners, we have additionally developed different stand construction concepts and event formats and perfectly aligned them to suit the changed framework conditions. These include for example the newly developed eGuard app for guiding the visitor flow, a streaming studio, a camera-based people-counting system or the “Human Security Radar”, which enables contact-free bag controls. In our #B-SAFE4businessVillage, exhibitors and media representatives can currently gain an impression of how it is possible to stage trade fairs also in times of Corona in compliance with the hygiene and safety distance regulations. We are looking forward to IDS in Cologne.”

The estimation of AUMA, the Exhibition and Trade Fair Committee of the German Economy e.V. also speaks in favour of a successful conduction of IDS in March 2021, according to which foreign trade fair participants are principally also allowed to enter the country. According to a resolution of the Federal Government passed on 15.09.2020, trade fair participants (exhibitors and visitors) are in principal allowed to travel to Germany even if they come from a nation that doesn’t belong to the EU/Schengen region or from a group of countries on the German positive list. The quarantine obligation for travellers from risk regions, who provide a negative Corona test that has been carried out no longer than 48 hours before entering the country, does not apply. The test can be carried out in Germany, however in this case the quarantine regulations have to observed until the test result has been received.
