How Pipeline Programs Can Increase Diversity in Dentistry

Study Shows NYU College of Dentistry’s Saturday Academy Boosts Underrepresented High School Students’ Interest in Health Professions

The field of dentistry has a diversity problem. Despite calls for a more diverse workforce, only 15.2 percent of dental school applicants in 2016 were underrepresented minorities, according to the American Dental Education Association.

Having more dentists from diverse backgrounds benefits both patients and peers. Dentists who are underrepresented minorities are more likely to serve communities in need and therefore address disparities in dental care. Studies have also found that a diverse learning environment improves the learning experience for all students through exposure to different ideas and perspectives.

But building the pipeline for more diverse dentists starts well before students apply to dental school. Early exposure to the field is essential, as students need to take science courses in college that can put them on the path to applying to dental school—making high school an ideal time to engage future dentists.

In 2012, two students at NYU College of Dentistry—who are now both full-time faculty members—set out to create a pipeline program for underrepresented and low-income high school students to boost their interest in health professions, including dentistry. The program is called Saturday Academy, and a new paper describing a pilot study of the program, published in the September issue of the Journal of Dental Education, shows that their efforts are working.

“The results of our pilot study suggest that Saturday Academy is a successful example of a pipeline program to increase the future representation of underrepresented minorities in the dental profession by addressing barriers to pursuing a career in the health professions,” said Lorel Burns, DDS, who co-founded Saturday Academy as a dental student and is currently an assistant professor of endodontics at NYU College of Dentistry.

Spending Saturdays at NYU College of Dentistry

NYU College of Dentistry has hosted Saturday Academy each fall since 2013, with students gathering at NYU two Saturdays a month. High school students are recruited to apply from schools across New York City; the majority of participants are in their junior year.

The purpose of Saturday Academy is twofold: to mentor and coach underrepresented minority and low-income high school students through the college application process and to expose them to the field of dentistry as a viable career option through both instruction and hands-on learning. Dental students volunteer each year to lead the program, enabling participants to build relationships with the next generation of dentists.

Each session is split into learning about one facet of college preparedness and a hands-on activity about dentistry. College preparedness topics include the SAT and ACT, Common Application, personal statements, and financial aid. Parents are encouraged to attend the session on financial aid.

In the hands-on labs, students learn how to take impressions of teeth, use stone models made with impressions to create mouthguards and wax-ups, and remove plaque and fill cavities on plastic models of teeth.

“While we aimed to create a program that was both informative and engaging for high school students, we also made an effort to address perceived barriers to dental school that influence the dentistry pipeline, including financial resources, family engagement, and mentoring,” said Cheryline Pezzullo, DDS, who co-founded Saturday Academy as a student and is currently a clinical instructor of cariology and comprehensive care at NYU College of Dentistry.

The program’s impact

The Saturday Academy founders and faculty advisors have surveyed each cohort of participants after completion of the program to measure its success. In the Journal of Dental Education, Burns, Pezzullo, and Eugenia E. Mejia, PhD, assistant dean for admissions and enrollment management at NYU College of Dentistry, report on their findings from the first five years of Saturday Academy (2013-2017).

Fifty-five of the more than 80 students who have completed Saturday Academy completed surveys about the program. All respondents reported graduating from high school and were attending college, with 93 percent enrolled in four-year colleges or universities and 7 percent in community college.

When asked if they were interested in the health professions, 71 percent said yes, and 47 percent wanted to pursue dentistry as a career. Nearly all (96 percent) of those wanting to become dentists attributed their interest to their experience at Saturday Academy.

“The results of this pilot study show that Saturday Academy has been effective in reaching underrepresented minority and low-income high school students to achieve its mission: increased understanding of the college application process and increased interest in the health professions, particularly dentistry, among participants,” said Mejia.

NYU College of Dentistry, which provides funding for Saturday Academy, is expanding the program to reach more high school students. The Fall 2019 cohort includes 45 students—nearly triple the average number of students in the first five years of the program (17).

America’s ToothFairy today expressed their gratitude to Hyperbiotics, a premium probiotic supplement manufacturer, for their recent product donation totaling more than $135,000 in value. The donation, which included their popular PRO-Kids and PRO-15 product lines, was distributed to nine members of the organization’s member clinics.

Through their Dental Resource Program (DRP), America’s ToothFairy provides benefits including donated dental products and equipment to 85 nonprofit dental clinics and programs serving more than 700,000 children nationwide. The program focuses on increasing access to care and preventive services to improve the oral health of children in underserved communities. Member clinics share America’s ToothFairy’s commitment to oral health education, prevention of pediatric dental disease, and addressing barriers to care.

“Our bodies are made up of good bacteria that keep us well. They live in the digestive tract, which begins in our mouth, and they’re currently under assault by traditional hygiene products, antibiotics, and our modern lifestyle choices,” Hyperbiotics Co-founder, Jamie Morea said. “We recognized that the children that America’s ToothFairy serves could benefit from our revolutionary chewable probiotic supplement meant to support oral and overall health.”

“We are grateful for every donation we receive, but Hyperbiotics has gone above and beyond our expectations—especially considering this is their first product donation to our organization,” America’s ToothFairy Executive Director, Jill Malmgren remarked. “Many of the families our member clinics serve struggle to pay for the most basic oral hygiene products, so this generous donation from Hyperbiotics will be especially beneficial to them.”

NYU Oral Cancer Center Awarded $2.5 Million NIH Grant to Study Cancer Pain

Posted on Friday, September 6, 2019

Brian Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD (left) and Donna Albertson, PhD (right) of NYU Oral Cancer Center and NYU College of Dentistry

Researchers at New York University (NYU) Oral Cancer Center were awarded a $2.5 million grant (R01CA228525) from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to study the role of artemin in oral cancer pain and growth. The principal investigators, Donna Albertson, PhD, and Brian Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD, seek to improve oral cancer treatment and alleviate pain by targeting overexpressed cancer mediators.

Albertson and Schmidt initiated their investigation of artemin—a protein encoded by a gene of the same name—when a molecular analysis of oral cancers from patients seen at the NYU Oral Cancer Center revealed elevated concentrations of artemin in tumors of the patients with pain. Since Schmidt founded the NYU Oral Cancer Center in 2013, scores of oral cancer patients have volunteered to participate in an ongoing investigation of why cancers hurt. Prior to surgery, Schmidt measures pain with a written patient questionnaire. A sample of the patient’s cancer is collected during surgery and molecularly compared with normal oral tissue. After analyzing the questionnaire and molecular data, Albertson and Schmidt discovered a strong correlation between artemin levels and pain. Since artemin is overexpressed in oral cancers, it is likely that artemin also promotes cancer growth.

“Out of tens of thousands of genes, the gene that codes for artemin is one that is highly expressed in oral cancer compared with normal tissue,” said Albertson, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at NYU College of Dentistry. “Artemin became the obvious target to simultaneously address cancer growth and pain.” Following their discovery in the tissues of oral cancer patients, Albertson and Schmidt undertook experiments in the laboratory to confirm the role of artemin in both cancer pain and cancer growth.

Artemin is one of four members of the glial cell line-derived-neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family of proteins. Neurotrophins are secreted molecules that promote growth, differentiation, and survival of neurons. Artemin contributes to pain by inducing expression of receptors on sensory neurons.

Oral cancer patients endure severe chronic pain during everyday functions such as chewing and speaking. Albertson and Schmidt have investigated oral cancer pain at the molecular level over the last 13 years to alleviate pain in these patients through improved pharmacologic therapy.

“I am unable to adequately manage oral cancer pain with the therapies that are currently available,” said Schmidt, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at NYU College of Dentistry and director of the NYU Oral Cancer Center. “Ever greater opioid doses are required as drug tolerance develops. Debilitating side effects degrade quality of life in a population of patients who also face an ominous five-year survival rate.”

Cancer pain is attributed to secretion of mediators into the cancer environment. Cancer-derived mediators sensitize pain signaling neurons. Cancers also induce growth of neurons in the tumor. Subsequently there is greater interaction between these mediators and neurons. Overexpressed artemin may also act as an oncogene to promote cancer growth. In their newly funded research, Albertson and Schmidt will evaluate how overexpression of artemin contributes to tumor growth as well as pain secondary to changes in neuronal function.

Carestream Dental Delivers Sophisticated Scanning Solution with New Premium Intraoral Scanner

Posted on Friday, September 6, 2019

High performance meets ergonomic design for uncompromised scanning in Carestream Dental’s newest intraoral scanner: The CS 3700. The new design of the scanner centers around doctors’ needs and preferences with customer-centric workflows; smart-shade matching; high-speed scanning and processing; and touchscreen capabilities.

The scanner is the ideal fit for any state-of-the-art practice, offering exceptional versatility to address restorative, orthodontic, implant-borne prosthetic and sleep device treatments. In fact, the scanner’s new software, CS ScanFlow, lets users select any workflow from a single screen for exceptional convenience and control.

To ensure remarkably beautiful aesthetic restorations, the CS 3700 features smart-shade matching that automatically detects the enamel color of the scan area to identify the ideal match. This patented technology, known as bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), captures actual shade values from several views, considering all angles of the scanner—unlike other systems that collect RGB values from a single view. In a single click, smart-shade matching automatically compiles a shade report with multilayer shade information for the selected area of interest, allowing users to easily share the outcome with the dental lab or referral for optimal restorative outcomes.

Users will also notice increased scanning speeds with the CS 3700—a 20 percent increase over previous Carestream Dental intraoral scanner models, in fact, that doesn’t compromise the accuracy of the datasets. Turbo speed scans have been tested and proven to scan in vitro single arches in 30 seconds when the recommended PC configuration is used.*

The CS 3700 has been prestigiously designed in collaboration with the renowned design studio Studio F. A. Porsche, the originator of the brand Porsche Design, and features the optimized curves, sleek style and ultimate comfort expected of top-of-the-line intraoral scanner. Its ergonomically optimal grip channel empowers users with a balanced sense of scanner control, while an optional wrist strap connects the user to the scanner and prevents damage from dropping. Users can also easily switch between upper and lower jaw modes direct from the scanner, allowing for more focus on the patient.

“All dentists are artists at heart, their eye is trained to recognize symmetry and aesthetics,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “The CS 3700 combines performance and modern design that doctors practicing at the highest level will truly appreciate. But it’s more than just style; the software that drives the CS 3700’s performance includes advanced features that keeps the user in the driver’s seat at all times.”

The intraoral scanner’s CS ScanFlow software further enhances the experience by providing the practitioner with more control of the scanning workflow process, as well as HD 3D scans; tools to meet the specific needs of restorative, orthodontic, oral surgery and sleep dentistry practices; and touchscreen capabilities.

To learn more about the CS 3700, or any of Carestream Dental’s innovative products, visit booth #1637 at the ADA FDI 2019 World Dental Congress, Sept. 5-7, at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, Calif., or visit carestreamdental.com.
