Benco Dental Announces Strategic Alliance With Vivos Therapeutics, Inc.

Posted on Friday, August 9, 2019

Vivos and Benco Dental will collaborate to help make all dentists in the United States aware of the company's unique apnea treatment.

Vivos Therapeutics, a company focused on addressing the root causes omild to moderate sleep apnea, has signed a cooperative agreement with Benco Dental to help broaden the Vivos System’s reach and ensure all dentists in the United States are aware of their patented system for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

“Sleep apnea is a serious and growing health epidemic facing America,” says Kirk Huntsman, CEO at Vivos. “Our newly formed partnership with Benco Dental will allow our revolutionary technology to reach dentists and their patients throughout the United States and introduce them to our VIP program designed specially to help clinicians achieve success, regardless of their experience levels in sleep dentistry.”

The Vivos System is a non-invasive, non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical, multidisciplinary treatment modality for mild to moderate OSA that does not require lifetime care for most patients. The proprietary and virtually painless Vivos System enhances and increases the upper airway and offers patients what is believed to be the first truly effective non-surgical, non-invasive and potentially lasting solution. Moreover, clinical results are typically achieved quickly (in about 18 to 24 months or less), and at a relatively low cost to consumers.

"Our company has a long history of bringing to market innovative products from trailblazing companies," said Chuck Cohen, managing director at Benco Dental. "The Vivos System stands as one of those potential gamechangers because it's a possible curative solution—a technology-enabled, multidisciplinary, comprehensive solution that dentists are uniquely qualified to apply. The Vivos vision of empowering clinicians to rid the world of OSA is keenly aligned with Benco's own commitment to driving dentistry forward and opening new worlds of treatment possibilities."

The partnership will launch with a series of events beginning in October 2019. Vivos and Benco also plan 27 seminars— one in every Benco sales territory—during Q1 of 2020. Benco customers in all 50 states will have an in-person opportunity to learn more about the treatment, how it helps OSA sufferers and increases the practitioner's value to patients, plus helpful resources available for integrating it into their practices.

Anthem Blue Cross Launches Dental Patient Health History Tool to Improve Patient Outcomes and Reduce Employer Costs

Posted on Friday, August 9, 2019

Provides dentists a secure, comprehensive view into patients’ complete medical histories for better informed and more affordable patient care

Anthem Blue Cross (Anthem) recently launched an innovative, first-of-its-kind solution giving dentists the access to view integrated patient health histories in real time. This allows healthcare providers to co-manage chronic conditions, increase instances of early detection, improve patient outcomes and experiences, and reduce costs for employers and patients.

“Anthem is committed to improving lives and communities, and simplifying healthcare for those we serve. That is why we are continuously looking for ways to improve patient health outcomes and reduce costs for employers,” said Scott Towers, President of Anthem’s Dental division. “Because 90 percent of diseases’ first symptoms are oral, improving early detection is crucial to successful treatment. The Dental Patient Health History tool provides dentists with a previously unavailable wealth of patient care and condition history allowing them to make more informed decisions and improve outcomes. We are driving a new healthcare approach, one that treats the health of the whole person, which we believe will lead to more proactive and less costly patient treatment.”

By providing dentists with extensive, integrated patient information – including prescription medications, medical diagnoses, care gap alerts and lab test results – the Dental Patient Health History tool offers an unprecedented and more comprehensive view of a person’s overall health. This solution helps dentists better identify new or existing health risks including oral cancer, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, or side effects from medications prescribed by other providers in an effort to mitigate complications and support patient health.

The new Dental Patient Health History tool is secure and in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Seamless access to diagnostic information, such as ICD-10 medical codes accompanied by simple explanations, grants dentists who are unfamiliar with ICD coding a better understanding of the information. This, coupled with an integrated view of their patients’ overall health provided in a convenient, secure online format, enables them to provide improved care and support. The tool, which is available to dentists in Anthem’s dental preferred provider organization (PPO) network, is the only solution on the market that provides consolidated access to a patient’s health history, beyond dental records.

For dental providers, the new tool helps them to provide more coordinated and comprehensive care to their patients.

“Anthem’s Dental Patient Health History tool is an amazing feature that allows me to see my patients’ medical and prescription history,” said Marc Schwartz, DDS, Wilshire Dental Group in Los Angeles. “Having access to this pertinent medical information gives me a more accurate picture of my patients’ health so I can deliver more safe and timely treatment.”

The Dental Patient Health History tool builds upon similar market-leading capabilities already available to Anthem eye care providers. In 2018, the health history tool helped eye care providers identify more than 30,000 patients with diabetes through an eye exam under Anthem’s Whole Health Connection® program. Whole Health Connection is Anthem’s integrated care approach connecting medical, pharmacy, behavioral health, dental, vision, disability, supplemental claims and clinical data. By making information available to each patient’s practitioners across different fields of care, Whole Health Connection allows them to identify and close gaps in care, lower costs, and ultimately deliver a better healthcare experience. This information allows medical professionals to recommend more preventative measures to patients, which in turn reduces healthcare costs for employers while improving employees’ healthcare outcomes.

Smile Generation® Serve Day: A Nationwide Day of Service for Patients in Need

Posted on Thursday, August 8, 2019

For the past 25 years, the primary purpose of Pacific Dental Services® has been to provide support so that clinicians can focus on providing oral health care to their patients to keep them healthier and happier. This includes educating patients about the link between oral health and whole-body health – what PDS and its supported dental practices call the Mouth-Body Connection®. The research is clear that harmfulbacteria and inflammation in the mouth can indicate and even cause systemic conditions throughout the body.  Maladies of the mouth, including periodontal disease, may be linked with other medical conditions including oral cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. Unfortunately, according to the National Association of Dental Plans, more than 70 million Americans are without access to dentistry. This underserved patient population includes persons with physical or mental disabilities; persons residing in geographically isolated areas or confined to their homes; and persons who are low-income or without dental insurance.

Smile Generation Serve Day: Increasing Access to Care for Patients in Need

Pacific Dental Services understands this need to increase access to dentistry for the underserved population. As part of their culture of service, PDS will once again join forces with The Smile Generation to launch the ninth annual Smile Generation Serve Day, a nationwide campaign of giving that focuses on providing donated dentistry for patients in need. On Saturday, August 17th, more than 700 PDS-supported dental practices and volunteers throughout the United States will provide thousands of patients with comprehensive oral health care, including cleanings, x-rays, scaling and root planing, restorations and extractions, if needed.  Since its inception in 2011, more than 15,000 patients have received donated dentistry during Smile Generation Serve Day, totaling $25 million in oral health care.“Service is at the core of who we are as an organization,”said Kyle Guerin, Director, PDS Foundation and Corporate Social Responsibility.“Participating in the act of service helps us focus on what matters most in life.”

2019’s Smile Generation Serve Day takes place on Saturday, August 17th

Many of the patients who will be treated this year are affiliated with After InnocenceSpecial Olympics International, or Dental Lifeline Network. “Smile Generation Serve Day is a great event that allows our volunteers to serve more patients with special needs,” said Fred Leviton, CEO of Dental Lifeline Network, which provides dental care for people with disabilities, people who are elderly and medically fragile, and veterans. “Many of these people will receive life changing services they never would have gotten otherwise. We are so appreciative of all the volunteers who opened up their offices and changed lives in their local communities.”

After Innocence is a non-profit organization that serves prison exonerees nationwide – many of whom falsely imprisoned for decades. "After Innocence provides free post-release support to more than 500 exonerees across the country, many of whom who have serious dental problems arising from years of inadequate care while in prison, and a general lack of good, affordable care since being released,” said Jon Eldan, Executive Director of After Innocence. “Smile Generation Serve Day is a game-changer for dozens of our exoneree-clients. Pacific Dental Services -supported dentists across 13 states are welcoming After Innocence exonerees into their offices, providing extensive pro bono services, and helping these deserving individuals take an important step in rebuilding their lives after wrongful convictions."

Smile Generation Serve Day also helped Pamela. She was a homeless veteran in need of dental care. After serving her country and being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, she found it difficult to receive dental insurance and she couldn’t afford to cover the cost on her own. That changed during a previous Smile Generation Serve Daywhen she met Janki Patel, D.M.D., a PDS-supported dentist. Dr. Patel gave Pamela life changing dental treatments that transformed her smile. “I thank God for Dr. Patel,” said Pamela. “She said, ‘we’re going to bring your smile back, and it’s not going to cost you a cent.’”

Patient stories like Pamela’s are at the heart of Smile Generation Serve Day, which has impacted countless patients. However, it’s not just the patients’ lives that are changed during this day of service. At the end of the day, volunteers are transformed knowing they helped underserved patients achieve not just healthier and happier smiles, but also a new sense of wellbeing.

Aspen Dental's Argentina Mission Trip

Posted on Wednesday, August 7, 2019

Recently, 10 dentists and dental hygienists flew into a remote village in Mendoza, Argentina for 9 days (June 29-July 6) as part of Smiles for Argentina, an exploratory humanitarian outreach partnership with International Medical Relief (IMR). IMR provided the supplies and equipment, some of which was present at the government health centers.

The team from Aspen Dental, the largest and fastest-growing network of branded dental care providers in the U.S., conducted cleanings, extractions, fillings and other life-changing procedures for over 800 patients within staged clinic sites in government health centers – all within trash dump communities or squatter villages. In addition, they provided the children with the education and tools to continue proper mouth care.

It is difficult for these patients to get oral care because the pueblos or asentimientos the Aspen team visited in Mendoza are essentially squatter villages, and while there are government programs available for locals to receive at the very basic level dental check-ups, many of these individuals cannot afford the fees associated with the oftentimes extensive care that they need. Specific factors include: poverty, lack of education on prevention and care, an overall high mortality rate, high incidence of diseases and overall there is little to no access to dental care. By providing these patients with access to care and oral health education, they were able to provide a sense of hope, empowering them with knowledge around their dental health, and treating their urgent needs that affect their well-being and quality of life. This validates why Aspen Dental’s charitable giving arm continues to travel all over the world, supporting doctors and their teams on a quest to venture to places unseen and many times forgotten, to gift people a better smile.
