After three years of extensive beta testing and input from a number of prominent periodontists and their team members, Deb and her team of developers put the finishing touches on OurPerioTeam, which is now available from www.ourperioteam.com.

The software utilizes sophisticated, yet easy-to-use technology that simplifies the patient referral process, treatment planning and patient management, as well as streamlining internal and external team communications.

-Free for Referring Dentists: No licensing fee for referring dentists, no matter how large the periodontist’s referral network.

-Real Time, Anytime Patient Status: One click access to current treatment status of all mutual patients, eliminating time-consuming phone calls between administrative teams.

-No Complicated Dashboard: Instead, OurPerioTeam provides only useful, easy-to-read graphic and textual reports.

Patterson Dental Continues Its Long-Standing Support for Programs Benefitting Dental Health Needs of Underserved Children

Posted on Monday, July 29, 2019

America’s ToothFairy announced today that Patterson Dental has generously donated $100,000 to support America’s ToothFairy and their National Mobile Care Initiative, supporting dental care for thousands of children in need across the country. The announcement marks the 12th straight year of support for the foundation from Patterson Dental.

Since 2007, Patterson Dental provided more than $1.8 million dollars of support for America’s ToothFairy operational expenses and children’s oral health programs. Patterson Dental is the Title Sponsor of America’s ToothFairy’s National Mobile Care Initiative, which provided critical funding, dental supplies, educational materials and other resources to 42 mobile dental clinics serving 152,641 children nationwide last year.

Tim Rogan, Patterson Dental Senior Vice President and General Manager, stated, “Our company has a long history of supporting America’s ToothFairy programs for underserved youth. Patterson Dental is honored to continue our support this year as an America’s ToothFairy Corporate Underwriter and Title Sponsor for the National Mobile Care Initiative to ensure thousands of children receive essential dental care.”

“More than 60 percent of the children served by our partner mobile clinics live in communities with dental healthcare professional shortages,” America’s ToothFairy Executive Director, Jill Malmgren said. “Without the support of Patterson Dental, many of these children would continue to go without care, suffering in silence from the preventable pain of tooth decay. We are so very grateful to Patterson Dental for their long-standing support of our mission to provide access to care as well as educational and preventive services.”

Patterson Dental’s Western Region President, Paul Guggenheim will also continue to serve as Vice Chair on America’s ToothFairy’s Board of Directors. “We are proud to partner with the team at America’s ToothFairy to help provide care and prevent decay for our nation’s most vulnerable kids,” he said. “Although we can record the thousands of children who receive care because of our support, the impact of that care throughout their lifetime is immeasurable.”

President’s Symposium Examines the Important Role of the Public, Private, and Philanthropic Sectors to Make Oral Health Care More Accessible

Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc. (HSIC), participated in a panel discussion at the 2019 National Dental Association Convention (NDA) President’s Symposium that explored the challenges associated with bridging the health gap in the 21st century. The panel was held on July 20th at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Joined by co-panelists Catherine Alicia Georges, EdD, RN, FAAN, President, AARP National Volunteers, and Rear Admiral Timothy L. Ricks, DMD, MPH, Chief Dental Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service and Assistant Surgeon General of the United States, Mr. Bergman and the panel of distinguished leaders discussed the roles of the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to identify and address the factors that lead to disparities in health care. The panel was moderated by Hazel J. Harper Johns, DDS, MPH, with welcome remarks from John T. Daniels, II, DDS, FICOI, NDA President.

As the leading voice on issues most important to those in the 50+ community, Dr. Georges outlined AARP’s health agenda highlighting the organization’s efforts to address health inequalities in communities of color and the need for collaboration among the sectors to help overcome the social determinants that impede seniors from accessing care. Dr. Georges also stressed for greater understanding of oral health as part of overall health as she detailed AARP’s oral health advocacy initiatives and championed for the inclusion of a dental benefit in Medicare.

Dr. Ricks updated attendees on the progress of a new Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health that has been commissioned by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of the Surgeon General, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Public Health Service’s Oral Health Coordinating Committee. He identified challenges and opportunities that have emerged since publication of the first report in 2000, and described key issues currently affecting oral health, such as disease prevention and treatment strategies for an aging population, trends in the dental workforce, and factors contributing to the rising cost of health care.

In his remarks, titled “The Power of Us,” Mr. Bergman shared key insights on a variety of topics, ranging from trends affecting the practice of dentistry and the rise of consumerism to the growing demand for diversity and cultural competency among health professionals.

“At Henry Schein, we strongly believe in the power of public-private partnership because the global health issues we face are too daunting for any single sector to effectively address,” said Mr. Bergman. “With our public-private partnerships, we work with governmental as well as non-governmental organizations, customers, and suppliers to make a difference in society. This enables trust, and with trust, you can move things forward – like advancing oral health, for example, by bringing together academia, professionals, and public health officials from around the globe.”

Additionally, Mr. Bergman commented on the company’s strong commitment to advancing oral health, oral health literacy, and the development of leaders at all levels of the global oral health community. He also explained how Henry Schein works to positively impact health around the world by aligning the company’s strengths as a business with the needs of society. This work is exemplified by the company’s global corporate social responsibility program, Henry Schein Cares, which focuses on three main areas: advancing wellness, building capacity in the delivery of health care services, and assisting in emergency preparedness and relief.

“We remain dedicated to the work of using our resources, in partnership with our entire network of customers, suppliers, investors, and Team Schein Members, to advance the cause of building better societies,” added Mr. Bergman. “Nothing is impossible, especially for those of us who recognize the potential of partnership and are committed to achieving a common goal. All of us at Henry Schein look forward to an even closer partnership between the NDA and its members as we move forward together on a strategy to make oral health care more accessible.”

For over 100 years, the NDA has been a national forum for minority dentists and a leader in advancing their rights. The NDA promotes oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members, advocating for the needs of and mentoring dental students of color, and raising the profile of the profession in their communities. The NDA is comprised of thirty-nine state and local chapters throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean. Representing nearly 8,000 African American dental professionals and 37 million African Americans, its membership also includes members from Africa, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South America and Latin America.

Dr. André V. Ritter Named Chair, Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, New York University College of Dentistry

Posted on Thursday, July 25, 2019

Dr. André V. Ritter, a distinguished dental educator, clinician, researcher, and executive administrator, has been named chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at the New York University College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry), effective November 1, 2019. The Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care is the largest department at the College and is responsible for a major portion of the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum in the dental education program.

Dr. Ritter is currently the executive dean and COO at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Adams School of Dentistry and holds the Thomas P. Hinman Distinguished Professorship in Restorative Dentistry, which recognizes outstanding achievement as a clinician and educator.

“My teaching philosophy is based on four fundamental tenets,” says Dr. Ritter. “They are to motivate interest in the topic or discipline studied; highlight the relevance of the topic or discipline for the professional life for which the student is preparing; emphasize the importance of making evidence-based decisions and answering questions and solving problems with evidence-based resources; and suggest potential areas for further research that could contribute to the evidence-base of the topic or discipline. This approach applies regardless of whether I’m teaching DDS or Advanced Education students in MS or PhD programs, or professionals in continuing education programs. When interacting with and mentoring students in the classroom, clinic, or on international outreaches and exchange programs, I emphasize the need for critical thinking as opposed to the memorization of rules, protocols, and procedures.”

This philosophy is at the core of Dr. Ritter’s staunch support for the importance of evidence-based dentistry in clinical practice. He served as the lead author of a systematic review of root caries risk predictors and caries management based on risk assessment, “Root caries risk indicators: A systematic review of risk models,” published in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, which has been cited in 87 other published articles. In nearly 200 books, chapters and refereed journal articles, he has published extensively on this and a wide range of other clinical research topics. Dr. Ritter has been an investigator on studies that have attracted more than $2 million in research funding, including grants from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) for adult caries prevention research.

He is also a prolific manuscript reviewer for over 20 peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Acta Biomaterialia, and the Journal of Investigative Clinical Dentistry, and an editorial/scientific board member and manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Dental Science, Journal of Applied Oral Science, Operative Dentistry, Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, The American Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, and Dental Traumatology.

Born and raised in southern Brazil, Dr. Ritter attended dental school in Florianópolis in the state of Santa Catarina. There, he practiced and taught part-time for 10 years, before moving to Chapel Hill in 1997 to enroll in the UNC School of Dentistry’s Operative Dentistry Graduate Program. He completed the graduate program, earning an MS degree in operative dentistry in 2000, and joined the faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry. During his time at UNC, he rose to the rank of full professor and also served as program director of the Operative Dentistry Graduate Program. From 2014 to 2017, he served as chair of the UNC Department of Operative Dentistry and has been executive dean and COO since 2018. In 2013, he earned an MBA degree from Northeastern University.

“Dr. Ritter’s demonstrated leadership, teaching excellence, research, mentorship, and global perspective -- which is certain to further enhance our own robust global outreach program -- well qualify him to build on the excellence of our Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care,” said Dr. Charles N. Bertolami, Herman Robert Fox Dean of NYU Dentistry. “I am confident that he is exactly the right person to lead this department as it seeks to advance research, treatment, and prevention of dental caries and to restore the oral health and improve the overall health of people in the U.S. and globally.”

Ascentcare Dental Products Announces Issuance of US Patent for Illuminated Dental Instruments

Posted on Thursday, July 25, 2019

Ascentcare Dental Products, a dental products company focused on the creation of innovative dental technologies, announces that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent 10,350,027 covering illuminated dental instruments using magnetically coupled fiber optic bulk lighting.

Problems with traditional light sources in dentistry have created a demand for a solution. Overhead lighting and loupes are cumbersome, require a high level of maintenance, constant adjustment, and most importantly do not do an adequate job of providing light where it is needed.

Fiber optic lighting solves many of the challenges dentists face while working in small, dark, and inaccessible places. Due to the ability to transfer high amounts of light through a small cable, this advanced technology provides intense and focused illumination directly inside the patient’s mouth.

The issuance of this most recent patent covers several of the instruments developed by Ascentcare that use fiber optics to provide intense illumination in hard to reach places. Using a strong light engine and a flexible, magnetically coupled fiber optic cable, Ascentcare offers many instruments that solve the problem of intraoral lighting. These instruments include an illuminated dental mirror, transillumination tool, lighted saliva ejector tube holder and intraoral light.

About Ascentcare Dental Products

Ascentcare Dental Products is focused on the development of dental technologies that span a diverse set of applications. They are engineering, design, and manufacturing professionals dedicated to creating and fostering innovative dental solutions and advanced technologies.

BrackFix Light-Cured Fluorescent Bracket Bonding System

Posted on Thursday, July 25, 2019

VOCO introduces BrackFix, the light-cured bracket bonding system that simplifies the removal of the residual adhesive by making it easily visible as it fluoresces under UV light. This ensures that after removal of the brackets, all adhesive is removed, while minimizing if not eliminating any unnecessary damage to the tooth itself. This also significantly speeds up the bracket removal process as all material to be removed is immediately apparent and visible.

The consistency and viscosity of BrackFix is formulized so that brackets can be positioned precisely, do not slip and stay in the intended position. This simplifies the application and allows the clinician to take as much time as optimally needed. BrackFix can be applied in two different ways: either with a standard primer, in which case etching is required in advance, or with a self-etch primer. Light-cured and able to handle a load immediately after placement, BrackFix is indicated for all metal and ceramics brackets and comes in an easy to dispense syringe.
