Geistlich Fibro-Gide The Alternative Soft-Tissue Graft

Posted on Thursday, May 23, 2019

Geistlich Biomaterials is excited to announce the expansion of the Geistlich Fibro-Gide® product line to include two sizes of the collagen matrix used in soft-tissue augmentation procedures in the oral cavity. Previously released in limited supply, Geistlich Biomaterials now offers both a 15x20x6mm and 20x40x6mm size, for both small and large defects. These products with be featured at the International Symposium on Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry in Boston, Massachusetts on June 6th-9th, 2019.

Made from type I and type III collagen, Geistlich Fibro-Gide® is smart-linked, a unique form of cross-linking, which provides elasticity, strength and volume stability. Positioned as the alternative connective tissue graft, Geistlich Fibro-Gide® is ideally suited for soft-tissue augmentation around natural teeth and implants. Additionally, Geistlich Fibro-Gide® is indicated for alveolar ridge reconstruction for prosthetic treatment and recession defects for root coverage.

For more Information on Geistlich Fibro-Gide® please visit: Fibro-Gide.geistlich-na.com

In contrast to connective tissue grafts which are considered to be the “gold-standard” in soft-tissue augmentation and recession coverage procedures, Geistlich Fibro-Gide® does not require a second surgical site, is ready to use, and has an unlimited supply.

“Unlike connective tissue grafts, where you are limited by the patient’s anatomy, Geistlich Fibro-Gide® offers variable thickness, allowing the clinician the opportunity to choose the desired and optimal thickness for the procedure.” said Dr. Alan Fetner, Jacksonville, FL, USA.

Designing a preferred alternative to the soft-tissue graft has involved years of development and more than a thousand prototypes. Geistlich has drawn from its vast experience in researching, analyzing and commercializing collagen based products tailor-made for specific dental procedures and therapeutic solutions. In both preclinical and clinical studies, Geistlich Fibro-Gide® demonstrates safety, efficacy and shows clinical comparability to a connective tissue graft. 1,2,3

Indications for Use:

Geistlich Fibro-Gide® is indicated for soft-tissue augmentation:

• Localized gingival augmentation to increase keratinized tissue around teeth and implants

Henry Schein Chairman & CEO Stanley Bergman Shares Life Lessons with Meharry Graduating Class

Posted on Tuesday, May 21, 2019

Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC), shared lessons learned from his childhood in South Africa to his position today as a global health care industry leader with the 2019 Meharry Medical College graduating class at the College’s 144th Commencement Exercises. The event was held on May 18 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sharing stories from his life as illustrations, Mr. Bergman imparted 10 lessons with the Meharry medical and dental graduates. Thinking big, showing up, remembering that it is all about people, recognizing the importance of family and friends, and learning from failure were among Mr. Bergman’s earliest learnings from his years growing up in the South End neighborhood of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

“The process of overcoming our individual challenges is what made us what we are today,” said Mr. Bergman to the graduates. “Each of us was at one time a clay pot that has been made stronger, more useful, and more beautiful by undergoing the heat of the kiln.”

Also addressing leadership, Mr. Bergman stressed the importance of developing the skills of persuasion, engaging everyone in a shared mission, and finding caring mentors and being a mentor to others. Noting that “doing well by doing good” really works, he underscored the multi-faceted value of giving back to society and encouraged the class to focus on increasing access to health care, promoting collaborative care between all medical and dental disciplines, providing compassionate care to patients, and providing cultural competency in an increasingly diverse society. Last but not least, Mr. Bergman encouraged the graduating class to enjoy the journey of life, make time for family and friends, and to have fun along the way.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry announced today the rebranding of Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children

Posted on Tuesday, May 21, 2019

"We are excited to launch this simplified name and new look that speaks to the passion and commitment our organization has for helping kids get access to consistent, compassionate pediatric dental care in their communities," AAPD Foundation President, Nick Rogers, DDS said. "This rebrand is a pivotal step toward reaching our goal of providing dental homes to 1 million children by June 2022."

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases among children in the U.S., despite being 100% preventable. For the economically disadvantaged, tooth decay can have a domino effect, causing pain, malnutrition, behavior problems, poor school performance and school absences. If left untreated, tooth decay causes pain and infections that may lead to problems such as eating, speaking, playing and learning.

The AAPD Foundation has given more than $4.9 million in new grants and commitments throughout the last eight years with over $1.3 million in 2018. Since its inception in 2010, the Foundation's Access to Care initiatives have provided dental care for over 354,000 underprivileged children.

"We look forward to continuing to ensure every child has a dental home through the funding and cultivation of community-based initiatives for pediatric dentists to help solve the oral health problems of children," Rogers said. "Our name has changed, but our mission has not."

The healing power of a smile: A link between oral care and substance abuse recovery

Posted on Monday, May 20, 2019

Your smile, and associated oral health, may be a factor for successfully passing through the revolving doors of life. It is your first impression to a stranger, the closing argument to land a job and a major factor to achieving a good quality of life. For those who struggle with substance use disorder, oral health often falls off the precipice of self-care thereby seriously damaging interpersonal skills, while causing poor nutrition, increased oral and general infections and debilitating oral pain.

A team of researchers at the University of Utah School of Dentistry explored the effect of comprehensive oral care for a more holistic approach to substance use disorder treatment. Their work shows for the first time that participants who had their major oral health problems addressed by a dental professional stayed in treatment approximately two times longer and had a more than 80 percent increase in completing their substance abuse treatment program. The results of the study are available online May 20 in the Journal of the American Dental Association.

"There is a powerful synergism between oral health care and substance use disorder," said Glen Hanson, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and School of Dentistry at U of U Health and first author on the paper. "Those who received comprehensive dental care had a better quality of life as measured by substantial improvements in employment and drug abstinence as well as a dramatic decrease in homelessness."

While the study did not examine specific reasons for the different positive responses observed for the FLOSS participants compared to the controls, a statistical analysis supports the idea that the improvements in substance abuse treatment outcomes were associated with the comprehensive dental care and not to other variables such as gender, type of drug abused, treatment facility, or age.

Hanson and his team joined collaborators at two Salt Lake City substance use clinics, Odyssey House and First Step House, to develop the FLOSS (Facilitating a Lifetime of Oral Health Sustainability for Substance Use Disorder Patients and Families) program. While the project was designed to provide the next generation of dentists with the skill set to care for underserved populations, Hanson discovered the participants got much more than just an improved smile from the experience.

Between 2015 and 2017, the substance use treatment centers recruited patients for the study. First Step House allowed patients to self-select for dental care (158 males in dental and 862 males in control), while Odyssey House identified participants with major oral health problems and then randomly assigned those to treatment or control (70 males and 58 females in dental and 97 males and 45 females in control). Patients in the FLOSS program received care at the U of U Health School of Dentistry for treatments ranging from extractions to root canals, to restorations to dentures.

Hanson and his team conducted a retrospective study of the data to explore the role of FLOSS in helping patients completing their substance use programs.

After comprehensive dental care, the FLOSS participants, either self-selected or randomly selected, were more likely to continue and complete their substance use treatment program. Hanson and his colleagues believe that providing complete oral care as part of treating the whole patient, is critical to resurrecting self-esteem and restoring important body functions as an essential first step on the long path to recovery from drug abuse.

"The experience is life changing not only for the patients but also dental providers such as dental students who now know how their work can dramatically alter their patients' lives," Hanson said. "I think if we do the same thing for patients experiencing other chronic health problems, like diabetes, we could see similar positive results for treatment outcomes."

Hanson was joined in this study by Llely Duarte, Lilliam Pinzon, Bryan Trump, Sri Koduri, Carter Bruett, Ken Smith and Huong Weeks at U of U Health; Shawn McMillen at First Step House; and Kali Mower at Odyssey House. The work received support from the National Institutes of Health National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Health Resources and Services Administration.

DryShield Announced Single Use Mouthpieces

Posted on Monday, May 20, 2019

DryShield®, the all-in-one isolation system for dentistry, is launching a new line of single-use mouthpieces at CDA Presents the Art and Science of Dentistry , as it celebrates its 5-year anniversary at the show. The company, which first made its stamp in the dental industry with the first fully autoclavable modern isolation system, is proud to expand its offerings to serve dentists who prefer the convenience of single-use mouthpieces.

As DryShield CEO Thien Nguyen put it, “We are excited to be the first isolation system with a full slate of autoclavable and single-use mouthpiece options. We think that, for our customer base, this is a real game-changer. We heard the voice of our customer community and responded with this new single-use line of products. It’s a reflection of our dedication to our customers, who help us drive innovation and value every day.”

Founder Dr. Lan Nguyen added, “Our vision has always been for all dentists – my colleagues and friends–to enjoy the benefits of modern isolation, no matter what kind of practice they are in. Introducing the single-use mouthpieces now offers dentists a range of options to find the best fit for their needs and those of their patients.”

Although the DryShield autoclavable mouthpieces continue to be the most economical option for many offices, for certain practices a single-use mouthpiece option may be preferred. In particular, the single-use mouthpieces target the needs of certain hospitals, government organizations, and practices that want the added convenience. The new single-use mouthpieces are available in Pedo, Small, Medium, and Large sizes to fit all patients. The mouthpieces come in a box of 20, with each mouthpiece individually packaged.

Designed by a dentist for dentists, the DryShield mouthpiece is engineered in two options - autoclavable and now single-use - to meet dentists’ needs for maximum affordability or convenience. All DryShield dentists will continue to see chair time reduced by an average of 20-30% per procedure, allowing more procedures per appointment, more patients scheduled per day, and more consistent on-time schedules.

Headquartered in Fountain Valley, California, DryShield LLC is an ISO 13485-certified dental technology company committed to creating new products dentists see value from every day. Since its launch in 2014, the DryShield Isolation System has won multiple Dental Advisor awards for Top Isolation & Evacuation Device, the Dental Product Shopper Best Product award, and recognition in the Gordon J. Christensen Clinicians Report and Dental Economics “Pearls for Your Practice,” among others. DryShield has operations or affiliates in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
