Midmark Corp., a leading provider of medical, dental and veterinary equipment solutions, today launched a new corporate brand identity that captures the company’s commitment to a better care experience and the growing value Midmark offers customers as they focus on improving clinical outcomes.

The new brand identity, which includes a new website, logo, tagline and more, mirrors the transformation of Midmark from an equipment manufacturer into a clinical environmental design company that enables a better care experience for caregivers and patients in medical, dental and animal health industries. By harmonizing the clinical space, technology, products and workflows, the company works closely with customers to contribute to better clinical outcomes.

“Care providers are always looking for new approaches, innovative technologies and proven solutions that can help enhance the patient and caregiver experience and improve the quality of care provided,” said John Baumann, president and CEO, Midmark. “At Midmark, improving the experience between the patient and caregiver is at the heart of everything we do. The new tagline, “Designing better care,” establishes a new path for the company as it continues to strengthen its role in the care experience through advanced technologies, acquisitions, new markets and expanded service offerings. It elevates the importance of design in the customer’s mind; helping them understand it’s not just about the space, but also how it is used and the people interacting within it.

With More than 20,000 Units Shipped, Carestream Dental’s CS 8100 Family Continues to Surpass Significant Milestones

Posted on Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Carestream Dental’s most popular imaging system has done it again! In less than two years since exceeding the 10,000-units-sold mark, the 20,000th unit of the CS 8100 Family was shipped in July 2018.

Within those two years, the compact, award-winning family of imaging systems, which includes the CS 8100, the CS 8100 3D and the CS 8100SC, grew to include a fourth system, the CS 8100SC 3D. The CS 8100SC 3D was honored with an Edison Award in the spring of 2018 for its innovation.

“What makes the CS 8100 Family so popular is its versatility,” Philippe Maillet, the global general manager of Carestream Dental’s equipment business, said. “No matter what a doctor’s needs—panoramic imaging, CBCT, scanning cephalometric imaging, object scanning or maybe all four—there’s a system within the CS 8100 Family that is perfect for their practice.”

All four systems are known for their imaging quality, speed and compact size. In fact, the CS 8100, first launched in 2012, earned six international clinical and design awards within its first year on the market. As for speed, the CS 8100SC and CS 8100SC 3D can capture cephalometric images in just three seconds*, making them one of the fastest scanning cephalometric imaging systems available. Additionally, Flash Scan mode, a feature of the 3D units, captures images in seconds to reduce dose and risk of blurred images. The small footprint of CS 8100 Family units—even with the addition of a cephalometric arm—makes the systems compatible with practices of all sizes, so doctors can provide exceptional imaging and diagnoses no matter what their office’s square footage.

“You can actually track significant shifts in the industry by the number of CS 8100 units on the market,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “For GPs making their foray into digital, there’s the CS 8100. The CS 8100 3D is particularly popular with endodontists as CBCT becomes the standard of care in that field. For orthodontists looking to take advantage of CBCT, the CS 8100SC 3D offers both 3D and essential cephalometric imaging—even object scanning for digitizing stone models. These are all growing trends we’ve been seeing in oral healthcare.”

Continual enhancements to software and the ability to upgrade or add onto any of the units also contribute to the CS 8100 Family’s popularity. It’s a reflection of Carestream Dental’s commitment to provide value to doctors through complementary equipment and software. Essentially, the CS 8100 Family is able to grow with a doctor’s practice as they expand the services they offer.

Products from ITENA

Posted on Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Dentotemp: Dentotemp from Itena has been developed as a long-term temporary cement and for the permanent cementation of implant-retained crowns allowing retrieval should the need arise. Dentotemp does not contain eugenol therefore there are no interferences with permanent cements. This acrylic-urethane polymer based cement will not wash away, as zinc oxide based materials do. The clean up of Dentotemp is easy. During stage two of the setting process the material becomes rubbery, allowing it to be peeled away from the margins. Rebasing and cementation can be done in one stage. The product can be used on vital teeth. Dentotemp is compatible with both acrylic and composite temporary materials, exhibiting high bond strength on natural tooth structure and metal implant abutments. With a high initial tensile strength, it has proved to be reliable and long lasting. Thanks to its very thin film Dentotemp allows a perfect marginal integrity and a very aesthetic result. The product is supplied in an automix syringe or hand mix cartridges.

TotalCem: TotalCem provides a strong adhesion to the dentine, enamel, porcelain, zirconium, composites, ceramic or metal for the cementation of posts, inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges. The procedure is very simple. All is done in one step: etching, primer, bonding and cementation. The product can be kept at room temperature; there is no need to refrigerate. As it is a dual-cure cement, the polymerization is guaranteed, even for areas with limited light penetration. Furthermore the excess can be easily cleaned thanks to a gel phase. The cement can also be used on vital teeth. The comfort of the patient is still ensured as the product gives no post-operative sensitivities. With the Automix syringe, the base and the catalyst are perfectly proportioned and mixed. As you can choose between, three different types of intra-oral tips (fine, extra-fine and ultra-fine) the placement of TotalCem is extremely easy. The film thickness gives a perfect marginal integrity. TotalCem radiopacity also allows a visual confirmation. There is two shades available, Universal A2 and translucent, which allow a perfect aesthetical result in the demanding anterior area. Those two shades have very long-term stability. This product comes to complete the bounding range with TOTALCEM.

TOTAL C-RAM: This permanent resin cement, whose bonding strength is 50 % superior of the CIVMAR on zircone, presents the following characteristics: self-etching, self-adhésif specially formulated for ceramics. It works on enamel, dentine, metal, ceramic, porcelain, zirconium & composites. The cement is dual curing (light or self-curing), optimized gel state for an easy excess removal: simply cure 2s. It has an extremely thin film, is eadio-opaque. It's presented in automix syringue, and is available in two shadesL translucent and opaque.

Reflectys: an anterior and posterior light-cured universal composite. Designed to obtain a true reflection of natural teeth, the product has exceptional aesthetic properties. The restoration is almost invisible thanks to a perfect integration of the composite. Its formula enriched with micro and nanoparticles also allows a remarkable mechanical resistance for durable restorations. The malleability of the material allows an easy shaping. It does not stick to instruments or gloves. It is easy to sculpt and quick to polish. There are no post-operative sensitivities so that the comfort of both practitioner and patient is ensured. Thanks to all those advantages, Reflectys give a lifelike result. Available in 16 shades, in syringe or capsule.  Also available in a Flow version, 6 shades. Ideal for areas with difficult access thanks to an excellent thixotropy.

Dental distributor part of Pennsylvania workforce readiness solution with YES, United Way

Posted on Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Juniors and seniors attending high schools in northeast Pennsylvania are receiving a new entry point to future careers.

The United Way of Wyoming Valley recently announced a partnership with the Northeast PA Manufacturers & Employers Council (NEPA MAEC), to provide the YES (Your Employability Skills) program to eligible students in four new schools/districts in northern Luzerne County. The goal: better preparing teenagers for the workforce and connecting them with award-winning businesses offering employment in their backyard.

The nation’s largest privately -owned dental distributor, Benco Dental, is part of the solution.

YES is a 120-hour, 1-credit, year-round elective course that addresses the shortfall of basic skills that employers say are lacking in many job applicants. United Way of Wyoming Valley is supporting the workforce development program expansion through a $20,000 grant. Emphasized within the YES program:

• business tours

• guest-speaking opportunities

• mock interview events

As part of the YES program, students tour regional businesses to get an inside look at how industry functions and the careers available to them when they are ready to enter the workforce.

One such business is Benco Dental. With its home office in Pittston, Pennsylvania, the largest privately-owned dental distributor in the United States offers a full array of supplies, equipment and services to dentists across the nation.

“Adding company visits to the YES curriculum allows students to see all the work options in their own backyard. And at Benco, for example, those careers can take them across the U.S.” says Danielle Dominick, a Talent Coordinator at the family-owned company.

Dominick explains a bit about past YES student visits to Benco Dental.

“Benco Ambassadors welcomed the students from the YES program and offered tours of our home office in Pittston – which is about the size of five football fields. Tours were followed by conversations with a warehouse supervisor, director of our Contact Center and me, a Talent Coordinator in our Culture and People department to offer a few perspectives of a day in the life of an associate at Benco,” she says.

“We shared info about entry-level positions, career ladders and specific requirements for employment at our company. The students asked questions – they were invested and surprised to learn all that we do here at Benco. During the tour and in the discussions, they were impressed with the award-winning culture that our associates experience every day.”

Benco, which has been named one of Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care and Biopharma for the past three years, one of the NAFE Top Companies for Executive Women for the second consecutive year, and Pennsylvania’s Best Places to Work® for 12 of the past 14 years, is proud to feature a highly skilled team of more than 400 professionally trained sales representatives and over 300 factory-trained service technicians.

“At Benco, we’re strong supporters of all of the United Way’s efforts in the community, including this new initiative with the YES program that will make educational opportunities accessible to even more of the young people in the Wyoming Valley. When more students in the region gain awareness of the employment options, a greater talent pool will be in place when positions become available at Benco and in the area overall. We always suggest that students visit the career section of our company website to read job descriptions and learn what is required. Then, when they see positions they want to pursue, knowing the expectations will help them set their goals,” adds Dominick.

AO holds scientific Summit to determine risk factors for predictable osseointegration

Posted on Monday, August 27, 2018

The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) recently concluded a three-day scientific workshop addressing the issues of dental implant healing and force mechanics, inflammation and mucosal healing.

The invitation-only event attracted nearly 70 AO members across dental disciplines from around the globe, and representatives from other professional member dental organizations, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP).

Chaired by Dr. Clark M. Stanford, AO vice president, and distinguished professor and dean, College of Dentistry, University of Illinois at Chicago, a driving question behind the purpose of the Summit, held August 8 – 10, 2018 at the Oak Brook Hills Resort in Oak Brook, IL, was to find out if there may be elevated risk factors attributable to local or systemic issues, as recent literature suggests.

“As more clinical experience is obtained from oral implants having been in patients’ mouths longer, either because they were in place for many years or because patients are literally living longer, we are seeing late-term complications that need to be considered,” said Dr. Stanford.

Participants discussed three questions for the Summit, each researched and presented by one of three work groups. Framed around outcomes or impact on long-term osseointegration, the questions addressed: Primary Stability and Osseointegration (OI) by Group 1; Inflammation and OI (by Group 2); and Systemic Health, Medications and OI (Group 3).

Leading the groups were chairs Drs. John B. Brunski (Biomaterial/Bioengineering), Stanford, CA (Group 1); Joseph P. Fiorellini (AO director and periodontist), Philadelphia, PA (Group 2); and Tara L. Aghaloo (AO secretary, oral and maxillofacial surgeon), Los Angeles, CA (Group 3).

After meeting during their respective breakout sessions, each of the chairs provided an overview of their group’s outcomes, arranged for a 60-minute plenary presenter and a clinical presentation for the entire audience. A moderated and dynamic discussion followed the plenary speakers and the clinical case presentations.

The plenary presenters were Drs. D. Rick Sumner, Mary Lou Bell McGrew Presidential Professor for Medical Research and chair of the Department of Cell and Molecular Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago (for Group 1); Flavia Teles, associate professor, Department of Microbiology, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Group 2); and Susan Bukata, orthopedic surgeon, Ronald Reagan University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Santa Monica, CA (Group 3).

Other members of the 2018 Summit planning/steering committee included: Drs. Lyndon F. Cooper (prosthodontist), Chicago; AO Vice President Jay P. Malmquist (oral and maxillofacial surgeon), Portland, OR; and Homayoun H. Zadeh (periodontist), Los Angeles, CA.

Case presentations were provided by AO immediate past president Dr. Michael Norton (London, England) for Group 1, and Drs. Hector Sarmiento (New York, NY) for group 2, and Joan Pi-Anfruns (Los Angeles, CA), group 3.

Results of this Summit, including three position papers (one authored by each of the work groups on their respective topic) are anticipated to be published in 2019 as a special edition of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI) – the official journal of AO.

Since 1996, AO has organized scientific summits on a quadrennial basis to assess many of the clinical and evidence-based areas of advancement in implant dentistry. Prior to this year’s Summit, AO held “Current Best Evidence for Management of the Edentulous Maxilla” in 2014, also chaired by Dr. Stanford. Information about AO’s previous Summits is available via its website, osseo.org.

AO funds international implant sciences award for eighth consecutive year

Posted on Monday, August 27, 2018

Reflecting its reputation as a global nexus for evidence-based clinical practice in implant dentistry, the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) has made a cumulative investment of $600,000 to help investigators around the globe pursue novel research to maintain and improve oral health and quality of life.

AO has provided these funds through the International Association for Dental Research (IADR)/ Academy of Osseointegration Innovation in Implant Sciences Award, which provides a $75,000 grant to the research institution of the annual recipient.

According to Dr. Clark Stanford, AO vice president, Dean and Distinguished Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, who serves on the award’s joint review committee comprising IADR and AO members, an extraordinary representation of international applications and a very impressive range of research topics have been submitted in the eight years in which AO has exclusively funded this prestigious award.

This year was no exception, as Dr. Daniela Mendonça, clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, was the 2018 recipient of the award for her research entitled “Effect of Nanotopography on Cell Population and Differentiation in Osteoporosis in vivo.”

“I am very excited and honored about receiving such a prestigious award. We hope to elucidate the role of cell population in implant/cell interactions in osteoporosis. Our results can lead to the development of novel implant surfaces with a more direct effect on bone cells,” she said.

According to Dr. Mendonça, mechanisms that control osseointegration are not completely understood and include a diverse cell population that interacts at the implant surface; but very little is known about how these cells interact. “We propose to investigate how titanium topography affects the osteogenic potential of mesenchymal stem cells in an osteoporotic mouse model in vivo, by using single-cell genomic approach to identify cluster of cells. We hypothesize that surface topography can improve osseointegration in cases of osteoporosis.”

Including Dr. Mendonça, eight IADR/AO research grants have been awarded:

• Min Lee, PhD, University of California, Los Angeles, CA (2011 recipient)

• Jake Jinkun Chen, DMD, MDS, PhD, Tufts University, Boston, MA (2012)

• Owen Addison, BDS, PhD, University of Birmingham, England, UK (2013)

• Rene Olivares-Navarrete, DDS, PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA (2014)

• Gustavo Mendonça, DDS, MS, PhD, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (2015)

• Alireza Moshaverinia, DDS, MS, PhD, University of California, Los Angeles, CA (2016)

• Lyndon Cooper, DDS, PhD, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL (2017)

• Daniela Mendonça, DDS, MS, PhD, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (2018)

“IADR is pleased that the Academy of Osseointegration is sponsoring this award for an eighth year,” said IADR President Angus Walls. “IADR thanks the Academy of Osseointegration for their continued support which allows dental, oral and craniofacial researchers to create innovative discoveries that can be applied in clinical practice and be used to enhance oral health and quality of life.”

Another important development in the AO-IADR relationship this year was the inaugural AO/IADR Symposium on Osseointegration, held during the 2018 IADR General Session in London. AO President, Dr. James Taylor, was on site to introduce and moderate this inaugural Symposium, which featured AO Member-Speakers Drs. Petra Gierthmühlen (University of Düsseldorf), Hugo De Bruyn (Ghent University) and Nikos Donos (Queen Mary University of London).

“This was an outstanding session, and spoke to both the established and the evolving synergies of AO and IADR in creating and disseminating knowledge that shapes the present and future of global implant dentistry for the benefit of our patients worldwide,” said Dr. Taylor.
