The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the leading authority on children’s oral health, inducted the new president and other officers and trustees for the new AAPD board of trustees in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 27, 2018.
Joseph Castellano, DDS, President. Castellano received his dental degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency and Pediatric Dentistry residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas (UTHSC-SA). He is board certified in pediatric dentistry. Castellano is an Assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Developmental Dentistry at UTHSC-SA Dental School. He is a graduate of both the AAPD Leadership Institute and Advanced Leadership Institute. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists. Castellano is in private practice in Laredo, Texas. His presidential agenda will include working closely with the AAPD’s Safety Committee to develop processes to ensure pediatric dentistry is a leader in workplace and patient safety, continued monitoring of the sedation environment and protecting the safe and effective use of sedation in pediatric dental offices, and supporting AAPD’s legislative agenda including title VII funding and support of the Student Loan Refinancing and Restoration Act.
Kevin Donly, DDS, MS, President-Elect. Donly is currently a Professor and Chair of the Department of Developmental Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is board certified in pediatric dentistry. Previous positions include Professor and Associate Director of the Center for Clinical Studies at the University of Iowa, Associate Professor, Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston and Associate Professor, the University of Texas Medical School. He served a four year term as the Pediatric Dentistry Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dr. Donly has published over 350 chapters, manuscripts and abstracts associated with pediatric dentistry and dental restorative materials research and clinical utilization.
Jessica Y. Lee, DDS, MPH, PhD, Vice President. Lee is the Demeritt Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of North Carolina. She is also a Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her M.P.H. and D.D.S. degrees from Columbia University and her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was also a NIDCR National Research Service Award recipient. She is a board certified pediatric dentist and an active member of the medical staff at UNC Hospitals and practices in the Dental Faculty Practice in the School of Dentistry. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters. She is involved in teaching, clinical practice and research and maintains several funded research grants. Her primary research interests are in infant oral health, access to dental care for young children and health services research. Lee is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards including the 2008 AAPD Jerome Miller “For the Kids” Award. In 2010, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers from President Barack Obama. In 2011, she was named the “Pediatric Dentist of the Year” by the AAPD.
Jeannie Beauchamp, DDS, Secretary-Treasurer. Beauchamp is a board certified pediatric dentist who is a private practitioner in Clarksville, Tenn. She earned her D.D.S. degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. She then completed a two year pediatric residency also at U.T. in 1993. Beauchamp is very involved in local, state and national dental societies. She has been active with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has been on the Board of Trustees as Parliamentarian and as the Southeast Trustee. She has served as chair of the AAPD’s Council on Communications, the Political Action Committee Steering Committee, and the Committee on Interprofessional Relations. Presently she serves on American Dental Association Council of Government Affairs. She was a member of the Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations and ADA’s representative on an Advisory Committee of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Beauchamp is also active with the Tennessee Dental Association, currently serving as the Secretary and Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee. She has served as a Tennessee delegate to the ADA House of Delegates for 11 years. She is past president of the Eighth District Dental Society. James D. Nickman, D.D.S., M.S., Immediate Past President. Nickman earned his dental and Master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota, and was board certified in 2002. He is the chair of Minnesota Dental Association MINDENPAC Board and a member of the AAPD PAC Steering Committee. Dr. Nickman also serves as the second vice president of the Minnesota Dental Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has also completed the AAPD Leadership Institute and Advanced Leadership Institute programs. Nickman maintains a private practice in the Twin Cities and teaches part-time at the University of Minnesota.
Noel K. Childers, DDS, MS, PhD, Editor-in-Chief. Childers has been appointed Editor-in- Chief succeeding N. Sue Seale, D.D.S., MSD, and previously serving as Section Editor for Pediatric Dentistry. Currently a Joseph F. Volker Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry, Childers will oversee the publication of two journals, Pediatric Dentistry and Journal of Dentistry for Children. Childers is a board certified pediatric dentist and his research interest involves the microbiology, immunology and epidemiology of dental caries. With over 30 years in his academic career at UAB, Childers has a longstanding history of external research support (NIH) and over 50 peer reviewed publications. He is also active in clinical and teaching activities for graduate and dental students at the School of Dentistry, Civitan-Sparks Center for the Developmentally Disabled and Children's Hospital of Alabama.
Anupama Rao Tate, DMD, MPH, Parliamentarian. Tate is an associate professor of pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She is a faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s National Health Systems where she serves as the Director of Advocacy and Research. She also is Co-Director of the District of Columbia Pediatric Oral Health Coalition. She chairs the Evidence-Based Dentistry Committee and Consumer Review Committee of the AAPD. She is a fellow of the Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center of the AAPD. She is currently president of the D.C. Chapter of the AAPD. She is currently Secretary of the Board of Trustees and chairs the Grants and Programs Sub- Committee of Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children. She is chair of the qualifying exam committee of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is a member of the executive committee of the section of oral health of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She received her D.M.D. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and her M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She received her certificate in pediatric dentistry from Children’s National Health Systems.
Jacob K. Lee, DDS, Western District Trustee-Elect. Lee is engaged in private practice in San Clemente, Calif. He received his dental degree from the University of Toronto, and completed his dental internship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He earned his diploma in pediatric dentistry at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. He is an AAPD Media spokesperson, a member of the examination committee for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as a member of the AAPD Speakers Bureau. Lee is the president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry and a Trustee of the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry.
John T. Fales, Jr., DDS, MS, Southwestern Trustee. Fales, a pediatric dentist with a private practice in Olathe, Kan., graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in cellular biology. He received his dental degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry. He completed his pediatric dentistry residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and also completed a master’s degree in oral biology at UMKC. He has taught clinical dentistry at the UMKC School of Dentistry. He is Past President of the America’s Dentists Care Foundation and the Kansas Dental Association.
Homa Amini, DDS, MPH, MS, Academic At-Large Trustee. Amini is Clinical Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and an attending dentist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. She received her dental degree and a Master’s Degree in public health from the Ohio State University and a Master of Science and certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a board certified pediatric dentist and a fellow of both the AAPD and International College of Dentists.

Gregory Olson, DDS, MS, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Director. Olson practices and is an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University, Calif. He is dually trained in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. Olson has been serving the Board as an exam construction member, part-leader, and chair of the Renewal of Certification Examination and Section, as well as an examiner of the Oral Clinical Examination since 2012.
