OHA Wraps Up Successful Annual Campaign

Posted on Thursday, November 20, 2014

CHICAGO, November 14 — Oral Health America (OHA) has ended another successful Fall for Smiles campaign,

educating tens of thousands of Americans about the importance of maintaining a healthy mouth through daily

brushing and flossing, visiting the dentist, eating healthy foods and avoiding tobacco. Thanks to the support of our

sponsors, dental professionals and families had access to a variety of free resources accessible on the Fall for

Smiles webpage and in the Fall for Smiles campaign booklet that was distributed to more than 100,000 dental

offices across the country.

“We greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors and the dental community with this year’s Fall for Smiles

campaign,” said OHA President and CEO Beth Truett. “Having a healthy mouth is key to good overall health and

we’re encouraged that the campaign generated more than 90 million audience impressions this year with this

important message.”

Dental offices across the country participated by offering free care and going out into their communities to

educate the public about the importance of oral health. In New York City, Dr. Bernard Fialkoff held an event to

engage students in Fall for Smiles at the Ivy League Early Learning Academy of Bayside. Senator Tony Avella

and Eric Schmitz of Patterson Dental joined him, handing out toothbrushes and toothpaste to students and

talking to them about how to care for their teeth. Dental professionals also participated in the opening Fall for

Smiles webinar, two Twitter chats, a photo contest and distributed campaign booklets and other free materials

to their communities.

Families were able to make learning about oral health fun with the Fall for Smiles activity booklets, brushing

charts and tip sheets. Older adults and their caregivers could access a tip sheet created specifically for them,

addressing the unique challenges they face when caring for their mouths. Americans of all ages shared Fall for

Smiles messages on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, sharing posts by OHA and utilizing the campaign’s social

media guide.

This year’s Fall for Smiles campaign would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors:

Dental Trade Alliance/Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait, Patterson Dental, 3M ESPE, Crest + OralB, Midmark,

Denticator, Hu-Friedy, Trident, the American Association of Dental Office Managers, OSAP and the National

Dental Association.

Henry Schein, Alpha Omega International to Enhance Holocaust Survivors' Quality of Life

Posted on Tuesday, November 18, 2014

MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein Cares, the global corporate social responsibility program of Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSIC), the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, medical and animal health practitioners, and Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity announced today the launch of the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program. The program was created in response to the White House's call to action to help Holocaust survivors in the United States age with dignity and support. The value of the dental care to be provided during the first year of this program is estimated to be approximately $1 million.

Vice President Joe Biden applauded the program at the General Assembly of Jewish Federation of North America on November 10, saying "…At least 25 percent of Holocaust survivors…in the United States…[are] living in poverty. With your encouragement, and the President's authority, I announced the appointment of a Special Envoy for U.S. Holocaust survivors to… [rally] volunteer organizations throughout the country, from AmeriCorps…to the Association of Jewish Families and Children's Agencies, to Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and Henry Schein, giving free dental care to [250-300] survivors."

In January 2014, Jonathan Greenblatt, Special Assistant to the President and Director of the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation in the Domestic Policy Council, described Aviva Sufian's appointment as the first Special Envoy for Holocaust Survivor Services by noting that she would "collaborate with nonprofit organizations and the private sector to raise awareness about the needs of this vulnerable population and explore public-private partnerships that could provide additional support." When Henry Schein and Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity heard from the Special Envoy about the dental needs of survivors, they created the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program.

"Henry Schein and Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity firmly believe that there is an important opportunity for the creation of an innovative public-private partnership to improve the lives of this most deserving and vulnerable population," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc. "We are honored to answer the White House's call to action, and hope that the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program will serve as a model for how other private and public sector actors can partner to help survivors age in the comfort and dignity they deserve."

The program is a pilot three-year initiative that will provide pro-bono dental care to a total of 250-300 Holocaust survivors across nine North American metropolitan areas in the first year. The program will commence in January 2015 in the following areas: Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, Philadelphia, Seattle, Montreal, and Toronto. The program will focus on providing care for the most economically vulnerable Holocaust survivors who are served by the network of Jewish Family and Children's Service agencies or other identified partner organizations, as well as individuals of any faith who were victims of Nazi persecution and meet the other eligibility requirements of the program. The individuals who will participate in the program will be directly referred through the local Jewish Family and Children's Service agencies or another identified local partner organization. In addition to financial need, the three critical factors in prioritizing patients for participation will be: elimination of pain, restoring function and lack of dental coverage. A clear set of clinical guidelines will direct the specific scope of care to be provided through this program.

"One of Alpha Omega's mission objectives is to promote and support the ideals of oral health. As an international Jewish dental organization we have a unique perspective and a special bond to Holocaust survivors," said Avi Wurman, DDS, President, Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity. "All of us recognize the need to improve the oral health and the quality of life of this most deserving segment of our population. Alpha Omegans are extremely proud to be an integral partner of the Alpha Omega - Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program."

Holocaust survivors in the United States are very much in need of support and services. One quarter of the approximately 120,000 Holocaust survivors in the United States live in poverty, in contrast to approximately 9% of the general population of the same age group. This population has special oral care needs, as many experienced prolonged nutritional deprivation and little to no dental care throughout their childhoods during World War II, which impacted their lifelong oral health.

"The Association of Jewish Family & Children's Agencies is truly appreciative of the partnership of Henry Schein and Alpha Omega to provide oral care services to 250-300 Holocaust survivors in need, which will allow our participating local agencies to provide even more and deeper services to this community," said Lee Sherman, President and CEO, Association of Jewish Family & Children's Agencies.

Generous financial support for the coordination of this program has been provided by The Claire Friedlander Family Foundation, the program's Guardian supporter; and Curt C. & Else Silberman Foundation, the program's Sustainer supporter. Additional generous financial support has been provided by the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Bedford Health Care Solutions, The Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc., and the Wagner Family Foundation.

"Claire Friedlander was a child survivor of the Holocaust, hidden by righteous in Poland to flourish in life in New York City. Oral care was one of her passions—and to provide integral support to this program that serves the neediest of survivors is our privilege and responsibility," said Peter J. Klein, CFA, President of The Claire Friedlander Family Foundation.

FDI launches its World Oral Health Day 2015 'Smile for life' Campaign

Posted on Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Geneva, Switzerland, Nov. 5th, 2014-- FDI World Dental Federation is today launching the World Oral Health Day 2015 (WOHD 2015) ‘Smile for life’ campaign to remind people everywhere about the importance of looking after their teeth and gums.

World Oral Health Day is celebrated throughout the world on 20th March each year with a wide range of awareness-raising activities organized by dentists, dental students, National Dental Associations (NDAs) and corporate partners.

Over 90% of the world’s population will suffer some form of dental disease in their lifetime but many of these can easily be treated or prevented with a good oral care routine. The WOHD 2015 ‘Smile for life’ is supplemented by the call to action ‘It’s time to…’, which campaigners can adapt to their local needs and circumstances.

Dentists at the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in New Delhi last September endorsed the ‘Smile for life’ campaign both literally and figuratively when they took turns to ‘Smile for life’ in front of WOHD 2015 campaign poster.

FDI President Dr Tin Chun Wong commented: “The ‘Smile for life’ campaign reminds us that oral disease can be prevented by practising good oral hygiene throughout life, from childhood to mature adulthood.

After tripling the number of countries celebrating World Oral Health Day between and 2013 and 2014, we are now looking to reach an even larger audience in even more countries as well as online.”

FDI’s Executive Director Jean-Luc Eiselé added: “We want to encourage everyone to celebrate this important day. Participants can download materials such as logos, posters and toolkits to plan their activities from the ‘Smile for life’ campaign website – where they can also read inspiring stories from last year’s campaign to help them plan their World Oral Health Day 2015.”

In addition, FDI confirmed that the four key global partners of World Oral Health Day – LISTERINE®, Unilever, Henry Schein and Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program – have renewed their commitment to support the campaign in 2015.

“The continued support from our partners is essential in ensuring that World Oral Health Day keeps on having a global impact, and that our message can reach as wide an audience as possible”, emphasized FDI President Dr. Tin Chun Wong.

Dentaquest Grant Supports Oral Health America's Increased Focus on Older Adult Health

Posted on Monday, November 17, 2014

CHICAGO, November 5, 2014 – Every day 10,000 people retire and only 9.8% do so with a dental benefit. To reshape systems that will impact lifelong oral health and stem the growing crisis facing older Americans when it comes to paying for oral healthcare, the DentaQuest Foundation has awarded Oral Health America (OHA) with a $299,450 grant. This grant will be used to support new initiatives within the Wisdom Tooth Project® (WTP), OHA’s program that changes the lives of older adults through improved access and utilization of care, health literacy and policies that promote oral health equity for especially for those most vulnerable.

“OHA is honored that the DentaQuest Foundation has entrusted us to work on a key Oral Health 2020 strategy – building healthier communities by giving older adults and their caregivers an opportunity to advocate for policies and payment systems that improve their oral and overall health and wellness,” said OHA President and CEO Beth Truett. “The DentaQuest Foundation’s support over the past four years has helped OHA to build capacity to take on the challenge of building a broad coalition focused on reshaping systems to improve the oral health of older adults – especially where disparities exist due to race, ethnicity, income, education and challenges of daily living.”

The new grant will support efforts by OHA to advocate for the inclusion of an adult dental benefit in publicly funded health insurance. This will be done in part by expanding toothwisdom.org -- a first-of-its kind website that connects older adults and their caregivers to affordable dental services and usable oral health information – to also serve as an advocacy tool. OHA will host a symposium in conjunction with the White House Conference on Aging in Summer 2015 and will also release an updated edition of A State of Decay to further raise public awareness regarding gaps in oral healthcare for seniors.

“The DentaQuest Foundation looks forward to working with Oral Health America to create alternative possibilities that will positively impact the oral health of older adults,” commented Ralph Fuccillo, Chief Mission Officer, DentaQuest and President, DentaQuest Foundation. “That possibility is what we can create together in community with OHA -- one of the trusted partners in the Oral Health 2020 initiative.”

To date, the DentaQuest Foundation has invested $800K in OHA’s Wisdom Tooth Project.

3M ESPE's New Pink Metal Housings Blend More Naturally with Dentures

Posted on Friday, November 21, 2014

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (November 4, 2014) – For more than 10 years, dentists have been helping patients regain confidence in their full and partial dentures by using 3M™ ESPE™ MDI Mini Dental Implants for denture stabilization. Now, this market-leading solution is even more patient-pleasing, as the esthetics of the metal housings have been improved with a new pink color that helps the housings blend more naturally with dentures. The metal housings remain available in standard (MH-1), micro (MH-2) or O-cap (MH-3) designs.

The addition of pink metal housings adds to the appeal of MDI Mini Dental Implants as an alternative for patients who cannot withstand the rigors of conventional implant surgery, don’t have enough bone to allow for full-sized implants to be placed, or are seeking a lower cost option than traditional implant treatment.

“By blending more naturally with dentures, these new pink metal housings will allow patients to eat, talk and live with comfort and confidence, said Karen Capiz, U.S. marketing manager for implants. “We are proud to continue to lead innovation in the small-diameter implant category by making the system more attractive to patients and dentists.”

Dentists may learn more about how MDI Mini Dental Implants can help build their practice by attending 1-2 day MDI Education Seminars. Introductory seminar attendees learn the minimally invasive surgical placement protocol as well as prosthetic techniques, and become prepared to stabilize full dentures using the MDI system. MDI Expanded Indications Training Seminars are intended for doctors who have attended the introductory certification MDI seminar or who have experience placing implants.
