DENTAL SCHOOLS

Posted on Tuesday, September 2, 2014

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A firm belief in the value of education is one reason alumnus Wayne Mortenson, DMD, and his wife, Sue have committed to a planned gift of $5-million to create an endowed fund to meet future priorities of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.

“We are so grateful to the Mortensons who have given generously to UofL over the years. They have a vision to ensure future generations of dentists receive a top-notch education in state-of-the-art facilities,” said James Ramsey, PhD, UofL president. “This endowment speaks to the progress of the school, which recently completed of a $48-million building renovation, increased first-year class enrollment to 120 from a pool of over 3,000 annual applicants, and established a new pediatric dentistry clinic at Kosair Charities.”

The Mortenson family has been a part of UofL for decades, with a dozen graduates from the School of Dentistry dental and dental hygiene programs.

After earning his own UofL dental degree in 1979, Mortenson began a successful career with a practice in Louisville, expanding to multiple locations in Kentucky and Indiana – and partner practices in Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Utah, and Idaho.

“Investing in the talent of UofL students is our goal, as we seek to hire dentists and dental hygienists who can provide exceptional care to our patients,” said Mortenson, who serves as Mortenson Family Dental CEO. “We are always thinking about the future of the company and the impact it will have on the health of the communities we serve.”

Nearly 70 dentists of Mortenson Family Dental and more than 70 dental hygienists call UofL their alma mater.

“Increased competition and a changing health care paradigm make gifts like these vital to sustaining excellence,” said David L. Dunn, MD, PhD, UofL executive vice president for health affairs. “The costs of education and training continue to rise, but our traditional sources of funding continue to decline. Philanthropic gifts enable schools like ours to make the investments into equipment, people, students, so that we continue to meet the dental needs of our patients.”

“The School of Dentistry is honored by this gift, and I appreciate the giving attitude that permeates the Mortenson organization. This endowment will certainly help build the future of the school as we strive to change lives through continued advancements in research, technology, scholarship and patient care,” said John Sauk, DDS, MS, UofL School of Dentistry dean.

DenMat Joins the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Posted on Friday, September 12, 2014

Lompoc, CA – September 1, 2014: According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), every year, about 230,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed, resulting in about 40,000 deaths. DenMat – manufacturer of PeriOptix Loupes and the Flashlite LED curing light--are well aware of these statistics and will contribute a portion of their October sales toward the fight against Breast Cancer. DenMat will be releasing special pink-themed curing lights and loupes for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, 2014. DenMat will also donate a portion of all sales made at this year’s Annual ADA meeting in San Antonio, TX.

A woman in the USA has a one in eight chance of getting invasive breast cancer during her life. 1 in 36 women expire from breast cancer. While Breast cancer death rates have been decreasing, this is likely a result of finding cancer earlier and following up with better treatment. There are currently over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. (ACS Website)

Early detection is particularly important in the fight against breast cancer. As the preferred source for VELscope Oral Cancer detection DenMat assists with the ability to detect oral lesions early, before they have had time to spread, potentially saving lives by means of a less invasive, more effective treatment when compared to other available screening devices on the market. We recognize the importance of early detection and are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the fight against breast cancer.

“DenMat is proud to be the worldwide leader in discovering oral tissue abnormalities,” said Brenton Lively, PeriOptix and VELscope Senior Product Manager, DenMat. "Giving clinicians the power to see a potentially life-threatening abnormality brings a new dimension to patient care, one that we are committed to advancing on a global scale. With all of our experience in oral lesions, it is quite natural for us to join the fight against breast cancer.”

Microcopy Introduces New “Easy-Grip” Articulation Film

Posted on Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Kennesaw, Georgia, September 4, 2014—Microcopy introduced their new Bite-Chek articulation film today at the annual California Dental Association Exhibition in San Francisco. Designed and manufactured at Microcopy’s state-of-the-art production facility just north of Atlanta, Bite-Chek represents the pinnacle of Microcopy’s commitment to developing easy-to-use products that simplify dentistry.

The new Bite-Chek articulation film simplifies occlusal adjustments, accurately marking points of contact and minimizing the possibility of “too high” an occlusion causing post-operative tooth sensitivity. Complete with an easy-grip handle which keeps the film from curling, Bite-Chek requires no forceps removing the risk of patients biting down on them. And, since no forceps are required for placement due to the easy-grip handle, there’s no marking on gloves or surrounding equipment.

“We are extremely excited to introduce our new articulation film. Its easy-grip handle makes it so much simpler for dentists to use during articulation procedures. And, the handle removes additional markings on gloves or equipment causing less mess. No more pain, no more mess, no more forceps. It’s that simple,” said Paul Tucker, Director of Marketing at Microcopy. “And, with hygienists checking occlusion more often after routine procedures, the simplicity that Bite-Chek provides becomes even more important.”

Bite-Chek’s thin profile helps patients close their bite completely, eliminating mandibular reflexes that can skew the occlusion. The result is a small, precise mark that makes adjustment easy to interpret.

For more information, call Microcopy at 800-235.1863 or go to BiteChek.com

The Canary System Launches the Canary Cloud

Posted on Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Toronto, Canada - Quantum Dental Technologies, the manufacturer of The Canary System, has released The Canary Cloud, which is designed to enable dentists and patients to make the most of their Canary experience.

The Canary System, with its unique crystal structure diagnostics, allows oral health providers to detect, track and monitor tooth decay and cracks in teeth.  The Canary Cloud then enables dentists to view and manage this data in an online environment, track Canary usage in the office, and keep up-to-date on Canary products and clinical news.

Now, dental offices can provide their patients with images, reports and graphs that track their progress on their preventive programs immediately after their Canary Exams are completed. Armed with this information, patients can easily see if their home care regimen is helping to remineralize early stage lesions. With the Canary, patients become more engaged in their own oral health care and active partners in treating tooth decay.

Using The Canary Cloud, patients can also view and print their Canary Reports from the convenience of their own homes.  All patient information is protected in accordance with HIPAA and PIPEDA requirements.

"I am so excited about this latest feature in The Canary System. It makes patient engagement very easy, and helps me to quickly track their progress," said Dr. Stephen Abrams, founder of Quantum Dental Technologies.  "No more looking at a series of radiographs to see if I can detect changes in small interproximal lesions, or remember what the large brown or white spot on the buccal surface of a tooth looked like 6 months ago. Now I review my Canary scan images and instantly see graphs tracking how a lesion is responding over time, all on The Canary Cloud.  We have moved caries management into the 21st century."

Visit www.thecanarysystem.com or email sales@thecanarysystem.com to request additional information.
