ADHA Objects to ADA Non-Hygienist Staffing Resolutions, Calls for Constructive Collaboration

Posted on Tuesday, November 5, 2024

In an open letter to the healthcare community released today, American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA®) President Erin Haley-Hitz, RDH, issued a strong objection to recently passed American Dental Association (ADA) resolutions that would eliminate faculty-to-student ratios in dental hygiene programs and allow unlicensed practitioners to perform dental hygiene services.

“The proposed measures outlined in these resolutions threaten professional integrity and patient outcomes, and fundamentally undermine the dental hygiene profession,” said Haley-Hitz. “ADHA strongly believes that rather than diminishing professional standards and undermining a complementary profession, constructive efforts should be directed toward improving workplace culture, enhancing professional development opportunities, and offering competitive benefits.”

The full text of President Haley-Hitz’s letter follows:

Dear Colleagues and Members of the Healthcare Community,

The American Dental Association (ADA) House of Delegates recently voted on and passed Resolutions 401, 413 and 514B, that aim to remove faculty-to-student ratios in dental hygiene programs and allow dental students and foreign trained dentists to practice dental hygiene in the United States, without passing a state licensing exam. We believe these resolutions pose significant risks to educational and professional standards and patient safety.

As the leading voice for dental hygienists in the U.S., the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA®) leadership voiced opposition to these resolutions mid-October, in the form of testimony submitted to the relevant ADA House of Delegates Reference Committees and through an open letter to the healthcare community, outlining our substantive objections and urging the House of Delegates to reject these proposals and focus on solutions that respect the distinct professional roles within dentistry and dental hygiene.

I sent a letter to the ADA on Friday, November 2, 2024, expressing ADHA’s disappointment at the passage of these resolutions. The framework of these resolutions purportedly addresses workforce issues, but the resolutions effectively compromise educational quality, established standards, patient safety and appropriate pathways to practice.

Dental hygienists face substantial workplace challenges, such as reduced time for patient care, overburdened schedules, and emerging workforce models that potentially threaten to compromise educational and licensure standards. The proposed changes fail to address oral-systemic health nor the underlying issues that are driving many hygienists to leave the profession. The proposed measures outlined in these resolutions threaten professional integrity and patient outcomes, and fundamentally undermine the dental hygiene profession.

ADHA strongly believes that rather than diminishing professional standards and undermining a complementary profession, constructive efforts should be directed toward improving workplace culture, enhancing professional development opportunities, and offering competitive benefits. These measures can address dental hygiene recruitment and retention without compromising the integrity of the profession and can protect the public from potentially inadequate care by under-trained or unlicensed individuals.

Creating practice environments that foster professional autonomy and empower dental hygienists to fully embrace their role will not only lead to better health outcomes for the public but will also improve workforce issues. When dental hygienists have greater control over their environment and practice, they will have greater career contentment, sense of purpose and professional longevity.

ADHA is currently addressing these objectives through active initiatives, and we have invited the ADA to meet and discuss partnering on these constructive efforts.

Sincerely,

Erin Haley-Hitz, RDH, BSDH, MS, FADHA, MAADH

2024-2025 ADHA President

NYU College of Dentistry to Host Third Annual AHEAD Symposium on Health Equity for People with Disabilities

Posted on Tuesday, November 5, 2024

The NYU College of Dentistry will host its third AHEAD Symposium on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET. The virtual event, titled “Achieving Health Equity through Access for All with Disabilities,” will bring together policymakers, experts, and advocates to address the critical issue of oral health care access for people with disabilities.

Dental care remains the most unmet healthcare need for individuals with disabilities, with patients and their families facing numerous barriers to receiving care. Challenges include inadequate insurance coverage, insufficient reimbursement policies, a shortage of providers trained in disability-focused care, and dental offices that lack the necessary accommodations for patients with certain disabilities.

To address these challenges, NYU Dentistry established the Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities five years ago. This state-of-the-art clinic is staffed by a compassionate, multidisciplinary team committed to providing comprehensive dental care tailored to the unique needs of patients with disabilities. Additionally, all NYU dental students receive training in disability care, and the College leads several continuing education programs aimed at improving oral health care practices for dentists and other health professionals.

The symposium’s keynote speakers include:

Jim Brett, Chair of the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, who also serves as President and CEO of the New England Council.

Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA 6th District), sponsor of the bipartisan Healthcare Extension and Accessibility for Developmentally Disabled and Underserved Population (HEADs UP) Act, which seeks to expand and improve healthcare services for people with disabilities.

Kim Hill Ridley, New York State’s first-ever Chief Disability Officer.

Kate Swenson, a parent advocate and author of “Finding Cooper’s Voice,” a blog focused on the challenges and joys of raising a child with autism.

In addition to the keynote addresses, the event will feature panel discussions on the importance of integrated care for individuals with special health care needs and alternative models of support services that ensure better health outcomes for people with disabilities.

The AHEAD Symposium is free and open to the public, with prior registration required. To register for the event and view a full schedule, visit [dental.nyu.edu/ahead](https://dental.nyu.edu/ahead).

Accessibility

This virtual event will feature closed captioning for all audio presentations. Attendees will need an internet connection and a computer or smartphone to participate. For any additional accommodation requests, please contact the event organizers at dental.web@nyu.edu by November 8, 2024.

By bringing together experts from various fields, the AHEAD Symposium aims to drive forward the conversation on how to make oral health care more accessible and equitable for people with disabilities.

Balanced Pharma Analgesic Aims to Lower Opioid Use

Posted on Monday, November 4, 2024

Balanced Pharma Incorporated (BPI) announced today the acquisition of rights to a promising new non-opioid injectable post-surgical pain relief drug, Enduracaine Dental™, for the worldwide dental market.

BPI aims first to capture a share of the $1.4 billion U.S. market potential for multi-day, non-opioid pain relief after wisdom tooth and other dental surgical procedures. Target improvements over current products include three days of analgesia, low toxicity, less need for opioids, and convenient packaging in standard dental cartridges.

Studies show that 94% of patients currently receive an opioid prescription following a wisdom tooth extraction1 and an alarming 14 times greater risk of opioid abuse following those prescriptions.2

As the nation continues to grapple with the ongoing opioid epidemic, Balanced Pharma believes adding Enduracaine Dental to its development pipeline will expand its offering of improved pain management tools for dental professionals, and hopes to significantly reduce the number of opioid prescriptions.

Enduracaine is a patented combination of tetracaine 0.2%, lidocaine 0.4%, and epinephrine 1:250,000 introduced to the surgical market in 2023 as Endura-KT (a compounding kit) by Ventis Pharma. While the drug performance has been well received by practitioners in multiple specialties, including Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the kit presentation of the product has usability challenges including a short shelf-life and the need for refrigeration and reconstitution. For dental surgeons, incompatibility with standard dental syringes is a further barrier to rapid adoption.

BPI will use their patented technology to provide Enduracaine Dental in a standard dental cartridge, with a two-year shelf-life and no need for reconstitution or refrigeration.

“If we can give doctors a safe, non-opioid drug with three days of analgesia for their patients, in a standard dental cartridge that is efficient for their practice, that is an absolute win,” says BPI CEO Dr. Scott Keadle, a retired dentist.

“We are pleased to partner with Balanced Pharma to make our Enduracaine™ local anesthetic easier to use for dental surgeons,” says Dr. Lou Stanfield, Chief Scientific Officer at Ventis Pharma. “The Ventis drug delivered in the BPI cartridge is just what the doctor ordered, and we look forward to rapid adoption of this new product presentation by our current dental customers and across the dental surgical indication.”

Dr. Keadle adds, “We are honored to partner with Ventis Pharma and dental professionals to offer patients and families the chance to lower the risk of pain and opioid associated problems after dental surgery.”

Enduracaine Dental and all BPI products are currently in development, have not yet been approved by the FDA, and are not available for marketing or sale in the United States.

BPI intends to make Enduracaine Dental available to dental professionals within the next 12 months.

About Balanced Pharma, Inc.

Balanced Pharma, Inc. Enduracaine Dental (BPI-004) will add to the list of BPI products that are currently in development.

All BPI products are currently in development, have not been approved by the FDA, and are not available for marketing or sale in the United States.

Biotechnology Company Enters Dental Market with Product to Diagnose Peri-Implant Disease

Posted on Wednesday, October 30, 2024

Today Integral Dental announces the launch of its first product, OraclePI, the only early diagnostic test for peri-implant disease. The test delivers a disease diagnosis and personalized care plan recommendations based on patient specific data. Dental implants represent an important option for patients with missing teeth. While implant success rates are high, the greatest risk of failure is an infection of the surrounding tissue, called peri-implantitis. Integral’s new product, OraclePI enables clinicians to gain insight into 100% of the bacteria present at the implant site, diagnoses the state of infection, and makes recommendations on most effective antibiotics and other treatments. “This has the potential to improve patient outcomes and drive profitability for dental practices,” said Rachel Raymond, CEO of Integral Dental. “As the demand for implants grows, we’re excited to offer an option for personalized management.”

By combining cutting-edge genomic sequencing and AI, OraclePI empowers dentists with actionable insights to improve patient outcomes through personalized care. “We’ve worked hard to make sure our processes fit seamlessly into the daily workflow of the dental office,” said Matt Getz, COO of Integral Dental, “Our $110/test cost to dentists is part of the innovation we’re bringing to the table.” Earlier interventions in peri-implant disease are often more effective and less invasive than if they are performed at more advanced stages of infection. Performing a diagnostic test as part of routine implant management can help clinicians identify problems early and keep their patients healthy. “The specific antibiotic recommendations give us the opportunity to practice true personalized medicine,” said Dr. Peter Joseph, DMD, Clinical Advisor to Integral Dental, “I plan to integrate this tool into my practice and ask all my referring doctors to do the same. The better the information, the better we can help patients.”

Diagnosing peri-implant disease is just the beginning for Integral’s technology platform. Integral’s vision extends beyond oral health to addressing systemic diseases triggered by oral pathogens, such as cardiovascular disease, pre-term birth, rheumatoid arthritis, and colon cancer. When we diagnose and treat oral pathogens early and effectively, healthcare costs reduce precipitously, and patient outcomes improve. Integral Dental continues to explore innovative applications for OraclePI, building bridges between oral health and broader medical care.

Call to Action: OraclePI is now available for purchase and is being offered in 10 kit packs for a limited time. To learn more and add Integral to the services offering your patients, visit IntegralDental.bio.

About Integral: Integral is a biotechnology company dedicated to closing the gap between oral and systemic health. The innovation is based on Next Generation Sequencing and Machine Learning technology and driven by co-founders Rachel Raymond and Matt Getz. The founders bring extensive biotech and healthcare executive experience, MBAs from Harvard Business School, and a passion for preventative medicine to this large, global health problem. Integral is a resident company of Johnson & Johnson Innovation - JLABS, a premier life science incubator program in Washington, DC.
