Tooth Loss Can Indicate Malnutrition, Rutgers Study Says

Posted on Friday, October 26, 2018

Older adults are at risk for both impaired oral health and malnutrition, according to a study by Rutgers University researchers.

The study, recently published in the Journal of Aging Research and Clinical Practice, analyzed the health records of 107 community-dwelling senior citizens treated at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine clinic between 2015 to 2016.

The results showed that more than 25 percent of the patients had malnutrition or were at risk for malnutrition. The researchers saw a trend in which patients with 10 to 19 teeth were more likely to be at risk for malnutrition. Those patients classified as having malnutrition had higher rates of weight loss, ate less and more frequently reported that they suffered with dementia and/or depression and severe illnesses than those who had a normal nutrition status.

“The mouth is the entry way for food and fluid intake,” said lead author Rena Zelig, director of the Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition Program at Rutgers School of Health Professions. “If its integrity is impaired, the functional ability of an individual to consume an adequate diet may be adversely impacted.”

Although further studies need to examine the relationships between tooth loss and malnutrition risk, Zelig said the findings show that dental clinics are ideal locations to perform nutritional status screenings as they can identify patients who may not regularly visit a primary care provider and who may be at risk for malnutrition. “Clinicians also can provide patients with referrals to Registered Dietitians and community assistance programs such as Meals on Wheels to prevent further decline in nutritional status,” she said.

This was the first part of a mixed-methods grant to research the associations between tooth loss and nutritional status in older adults. The second part of the grant built on these results and qualitatively studied the eating experience and eating-related quality of life of community-dwelling older adults using qualitative interviews.

The study sets the stage for further research to examine the relationships between tooth loss and malnutrition risk and the impact of tooth loss on the eating experience and eating-related quality of life.

Ultradent’s Uveneer™ Direct Composite Template System Receives American Association of Women Dentists’ 2019 Best Product Award

Posted on Thursday, October 25, 2018

The American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) awarded Ultradent Product’s Uveneer™ Direct Composite Template System as its 2019 Best Product. The award was presented by AAWD President-Elect, Dr. Brittany Bergeron, to Ultradent representative Kristin Verdone, on August 6, 2018, during the 97th Annual Conference of AAWD held at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa, Georgia.

The Uveneer system is a unique, minimally invasive template system that creates beautiful direct composite veneers with predictable shape and symmetry—all in one visit. Each template mimics natural dentition and is designed to create high-quality, natural-looking anterior composite restorations.

The Uveneer template system uses innovative technologies that help dentists achieve a refined, anatomically correct, high-gloss restoration in a fraction of the time than if done free-hand. Results are reproducible and predictable. It can also be used for mock-ups and shade selection, as well as temporaries.

With a suggested retail price of approximately $660, the Uveneer system is also affordable.

“Being able to meet the patient in the middle when she couldn’t afford porcelain veneers has made a life-long relationship with this patient, leading to referrals, etc.,” says Dr. Brittany Bergeron, AAWD president-elect and 2018 conference chair. “If you’re looking to simplify your technique for predictable and esthetic direct composite restorations, check out the Uveneer composite veneer template kit. You won’t be disappointed!”

“As a woman with a busy practice, I found that traditional free-hand direct composite veneers were artistically challenging, unpredictable, and not always cost-effective. Being passionate about conservative dentistry, I knew there had to be a better way to create long-lasting, esthetic composite veneers more efficiently and easily. I spent years creating and perfecting a template system that any dentist could rely on, which resulted in the Uveneer system,” said Dr. Sigal Jacobsen, the creator of the Uveneer system. “Ultradent and I are so honored that the Uveneer won the 2019 Best Product Award by the AAWD and hope it can make the lives of the clinicians that use it easier!”

As Dr. Bergeron puts it, “If you haven’t tried the AAWD 2018 Best New Product yet, you’re missing out!”

ADA Adopts Further Policy Discouraging Direct-to-Consumer Dental Services

Posted on Thursday, October 25, 2018

A new policy from the American Dental Association (ADA) "strongly discourages the practice of direct to the consumer (DTC) dental laboratory services because of the potential for irreversible harm to patients." The new policy expands upon a 2017 ADA policy entitled "Do-It-Yourself Teeth Straightening" to include the sale of partial dentures, teeth whitening trays, snoring appliances, veneers and mouth guards, in addition to DTC orthodontic services.

The traditional role of a dental laboratory is to manufacture prosthetics and devices at the direction of the dentist. The dentist writes a prescription to the laboratory customized to the specific clinical needs of the patient citing the materials to be used and any special design features requested.

Recently, however, some laboratories have offered to sell such products directly to consumers. Bypassing the involvement and oversight of the dentist eliminates the dentist's essential role in diagnosing oral health conditions, creating treatment plans to meet those needs, and safely managing treatment needs through the course of dental care. Self-delivered, unsupervised dental treatment, in the view of the ADA, creates the risk of damage and irreversible harm to patients.

By circumventing the involvement of a licensed dentist, patients lose a very important quality control checkpoint—their dentist—to ensure all aspects of their treatment are performed and are progressing in the best interests of the patient. This includes oversight of the manufacture of prosthetic devices, including disclosure of materials used and country of origin, ensuring that they are to the satisfaction of both patient and dentist. Moreover, if consumers experience problems with a DTC manufactured dental prosthetic, their ability to resolve the situation is greatly impaired in the absence of a dentist who has prescribed the prosthetic device.

However, another avenue is available. Because dental prosthetics, such as aligners, partial dentures and snoring appliances are considered medical devices by the FDA, the FDA encourages consumers as well as health care professionals, in case of problems, to utilize and submit the MedWatch voluntary reporting form to help improve safety by bringing attention to particular issues. More general information about the FDA medical device reporting program can be found here.

In the view of the ADA, the dentist is ultimately responsible for the patient's care, and is the only individual licensed and qualified to accept responsibility for prosthetic care. By adopting this new policy, the ADA strongly discourages the practice of direct to consumer dental laboratory services. Visit MouthHealthy.org/DIYdentistry to learn more.

In a colossal collaboration on Saturday, October 20, The Smile Generation, Futuro Academy Public Charter School, Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc., and KaBOOM! transformed an empty site on the Futuro Academy campus into a kid designed, state of the art playground in just six hours. “Our families are so excited for a space that will promote safe play, fun, and a sense of community for our students,” said Ignacio Prado, Executive Director of Futuro Academy. Throughout the day, dozens of volunteers worked tirelessly as live music played. As the build finished, dozens of proud and tired community members and volunteers participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony, which featured a handmade banner crafted by Futuro Academy students. The official unveiling marks the 13th playground built in partnership with The Smile Generation and KaBOOM!.

During the playground construction, volunteers with The Smile Generation, a referral service that connects prospective patients with trusted dentists in their communities, were joined by Smile Generation-trusted dentists to provide patient care. In partnership with the PDS® Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization committed to serving patients by improving oral health care, clinicians utilized the Foundation’s Mobile Dental Clinic to provide patients comprehensive dentistry, including cleanings, x-rays, scaling and root planing, restorations, and extractions totaling $45,000 in donated dentistry for 80 Futuro Academy students and community members in need.

This KaBOOM! playground collaboration, along with dozens of other annual Smile Generation and Pacific Dental Services Foundation initiatives, is part of the culture of service that is fundamental to Pacific Dental Services, a dental support organization (DSO) that provides business and administrative services for dental offices. “We’re passionate about helping people get healthier and happier,” said Kyle Guerin, Director of The Pacific Dental Services Foundation and Corporate Responsibility. “What better way to do that than by building a playground to benefit the children of the local community?” There will certainly be many more healthy smiles at Futuro Academy thanks to this great, safe place for kids to experience healthy play.

3Shape Ortho System Clear Aligner Workflow Receives FDA 510(k) Market Clearance

Posted on Thursday, October 25, 2018

3Shape has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) USA market clearance for the 3Shape Ortho System clear aligner workflow.

The 3Shape Ortho System clear aligner workflow is used in 3Shape’s Clear Aligner Studio software. Because of this, USA dental professionals can now use 3Shape Clear Aligner Studio to design and produce their own orthodontic clear aligner treatments.

3Shape Clear Aligner Studio guides professionals through the case analysis, setup, and staging, and exports to print for production.

Using simple and intuitive workflows, the software provides analysis of arch shapes, overjet/overbite, Bolton ratios, occlusion, and spaces. From there, virtual setups can be created and subdivided into the clear aligner stages needed. Attachments and interproximal reduction can also be added to the treatment plan and when planning is complete, sub-setups can be prepared for printing. Production files can be exported for 3D printing and vacuum forming. The software is compatible with a wide range of 3D printers.

“Around the world, hundreds of thousands of clear aligners are produced every year using 3Shape Clear Aligner Studio. It is very exciting that USA professionals now have the same opportunity to take total control of their design, budgeting, and production of clear aligners,” says Allan Hyldal, Vice President of 3Shape Orthodontics.

Like all 3Shape solutions, 3Shape Clear Aligner Studio is open. Professionals are free to decide how much of the workflow they want to do in-house and/or seamlessly send to design and production partners.

Because the workflow is digital, treatment planning and simulations can be shared onscreen with patients as well as between practice and lab via the 3Shape Communicate cloud platform.

Prisyna Launches Moisyn Rinse to Treat Dry Mouth

Posted on Wednesday, October 24, 2018

Prisyna, the oral care division of Synedgen, founded to optimize oral health using advanced, proprietary glycomics technology, today announced the market launch of Moisyn Rinse for the relief of xerostomia.

Xerostomia (also known as dry mouth, or dry mouth syndrome) occurs when there is a decrease in the presence of saliva. Dry mouth affects a large percentage of the adult population, and as much as half of the elderly population in the United States. The symptoms of dry mouth significantly impact patient quality of life and often cause difficulty in chewing, swallowing and speaking. Xerostomia can result in dry, thick oral mucus, painful oral tissues, bad breath, and sleep disturbance.

Moisyn Rinse is the follow-up companion product to Moisyn Mist, Prisyna’s convenient dry mouth spray. The Moisyn product line is the first glycomics targeted therapy that has been shown in a clinical study to reduce pain and increase comfort for patients living with dry mouth.1 Moisyn products relieve the symptoms of dry mouth while moisturizing and lubricating oral dryness.

“The launch of Moisyn Rinse is another great milestone for Prisyna and our dedicated team. I believe our technology is truly unique, innovative, and most importantly, addresses a need that is not currently being fully met with the product offerings on the market. Prisyna’s advanced, patented technology provides relief that soothes dry mouth symptoms,” said Leo Pranitis, General Manager of Prisyna. “We are now pleased to offer patients dry mouth relief in both a rinse and spray form.”

“It’s exciting to see our product line expand to include the Moisyn Rinse, said Dr. Shenda Baker, COO of Synedgen. “The value of Moisyn to patients reflects the benefit of our core glycomic science in addressing important medical challenges. Prisyna is the first of our divisions to become commercially viable, and we look forward to bringing our innovations to other areas of medicine where acute needs still exist.”

About Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)

Xerostomia, or dry mouth, causes dryness in the oral cavity, most commonly the tongue and roof of the mouth. Typically, it is identified by a reduction or absence of oral saliva and can be brought on by a variety of conditions, including aging. Over 1000 prescription and non-prescription medications, including drugs for treating anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, allergies, and cancer are known to alter the production of saliva and cause dry mouth as a side effect.

Common problems stemming from dry mouth include tooth decay, disturbed sleep, dry throat, burning sensation in the throat, gum disease, oral infections, taste change, and difficulty speaking and swallowing.

About Prisyna

Prisyna, the oral healthcare division of Synedgen, is developing and commercializing a new class of oral health care products based on glycomics, a revolutionary approach using natural glycopolymers to target the mucosal interface. Prisyna uses this unique technology to develop oral health care products that clean the mouth, reduce pain and irritation on sensitive mucosal surfaces and improve overall oral health. Prisyna is building a family of environmentally safe products using cutting edge science to promote healthy teeth, gums and oral surfaces. https://www.prisyna.com/

Aspen Dental VIBE Session: Academic Edition Offers 150 Dental Students A Unique Opportunity To Kick-Start Their Careers

Posted on Tuesday, October 23, 2018

More than 150 dental students from 37 dental schools across the country descended on Chicago from October 19- 21 to participate in an Aspen Dental VIBE Session: Academic Edition. This was a one-of-a-kind recruitment event designed to match fourth-year dental students with Aspen Dental practice owners looking to hire new dentists upon graduation.

Aspen Dental VIBE Session: Academic Edition brings more than 150 dental students from 37 schools across the country together for one-of-a-kind recruiting experience in Chicago. Photo Credit: Aspen Dental Management, Inc.

In total, more than 300 interviews were conducted by nearly 50 dental practice owners during the event. What's more, 40 job offers were extended onsite, and 10 attending students have already accepted a full-time position at an Aspen Dental office upon graduation.

Of the roughly 6,000 dental students who will graduate in 2019, an estimated 25 percent will begin their career at a DSO-supported practice. There is an industry-wide race to recruit top talent, which means that DSOs are becoming increasingly competitive to meet the shifting needs and expectations of new dentists who are entering the job market. With a new Aspen Dental branded office opening every five days, Aspen Dental Management, Inc. (ADMI) is leading the charge to bring new talented dentists onboard.

"Just as patient expectations of dental care have changed, dentists' expectations for their careers are also shifting, particularly as more women and millennials enter the field," said Dr. Arwinder Judge, chief clinical officer at ADMI. "Events like this are just one of the ways we're revolutionizing how we recruit and train new dentists to adapt to the evolving wants and needs of the next generation."

The Chicago VIBE Event marked the second VIBE Session: Academic Edition this year. Dental students nationwide participated in the event, which included networking, a panel discussion, keynote speakers and one-on-one interviews with Aspen Dental practice owners looking to grow and expand their practices.

Added John Murphy, vice president of talent acquisition at ADMI, "The purpose of the event was simple: immerse students in our unique culture, understand their goals and career aspirations, and make it clear that dentists who join Aspen Dental are supported by mentors and an organization that will stop at nothing to enable their success."

The weekend was capped-off by a fun and engaging experience at the Museum of Broadcast Communications, which was hosting a limited-time "Saturday Night Live: The Experience" exhibit.
