Achieving Excellence Begins with Making Wise Choices
Key products for success in everyday practice

In the words of Aristotle, “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives—choice, not chance, determines your destiny.” With the ever growing market of dental products, selections are infinite, making our choices much more critical. It is with that principle that I select my go-to, everyday products in my practice. In an office with multiple providers, inventory can become overwhelming if an effective, universal system is not set in place. With that in mind, I will share with you my three go-to products for everyday practice.
My bonding agent of choice is ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL® from BISCO (Figure 1). ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL is a truly universal dental adhesive that combines etching, priming, and bonding in one bottle. ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL is an ethanol-/water-based dental adhesive that bonds to dentin to cut and un-cut enamel. This one bottle allows me to employ different techniques for different clinical situations, while keeping the same adhesive in my hands from case to case, all with excellent clinical results.
A second product that I have used ever since it was released is BISCO’s TheraCal LC® (Figure 2). TheraCal LC is a light-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate filled liner designed for use in direct and indirect pulp capping, and as a protective liner under composites, amalgams, cements, and other base materials. It can be used as an alternative to calcium hydroxide, glass ionomer, RMGI, IRM/ZOE, and other restorative materials. TheraCal LC performs very well as a barrier and protectant of the dental pulpal complex.
Our office performs a lot of CAD/CAM restorations, both partial and full coverage, thus our choice of luting agent is critical for delivering success to our patients. BISCO’s new DUO-LINK UNIVERSAL™ (Figure 3) is perfect for reliable, high-strength cementation with easy cleanup. DUO-LINK UNIVERSAL is specially formulated for cementation of all indirect restorations. I recently read Talent Is Overrated, by Geoff Colvin, and I found one thing very valuable, especially since it’s all related to becoming more effective. Mr. Colvin’s primary message is that people are not born with all the natural talent and abilities that will make them great in life. In his opinion, everyone can achieve world-class performance through “deliberate practice” in his or her chosen field—business, music, sports, even dentistry.1 With a universal system that we repeat on a daily basis, we can enable the greatness inside of us, and pass that greatness onto our patients. Remember, we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
