Welcome to the rapidly evolving world of dental radiology. While radiography, which has long been an indispensible diagnostic tool in dentistry as in medicine, is nothing new, its incorporation into the modern dental practice continues to require thoughtful planning and execution. Clinicians must choose among the myriad options, mastering new technology, introducing it to their dental teams, and integrating it into their practice management systems. What’s more, concerns about radiation dose now require that healthcare providers balance the risks and benefits of different imaging systems and their use.
As Chairman of the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics (SCDI) Working Group 12.1 on Digital Imaging, Photography, and DICOM, I have a special interest in this immensely important topic. I am therefore happy to present Inside Dental Radiology: A Comprehensive Resource in Imaging Technology to my colleagues to help educate dental practices on imaging technology planning, installation, and integration, as well as radiation-dose and HIPAA guidelines.
For this special supplement, we interviewed key opinion leaders who were willing to share their observations about the current status and future trends of dental radiography. I am certain you will find their insights and recommendations valuable for your practice and patient care.
As oral healthcare moves into the medical and wellness model, our ability to obtain and share diagnostic information of the highest quality will be central to integrated patient care. Our options and opportunities are continually expanding, and so is our need for comprehensive, up-to-date information. I hope this special supplement will provide you with new perspectives on these exciting opportunities.
