CBCT Positively Impacts Patients and the Dental Team

I knew that I wanted to become a dentist when I was very young. I would go to the dentist with my mom, and I got to see all of the moving parts. However, during high school, I thought I wanted to become an engineer. I ended up shadowing both engineers and dentists, and I decided that I was better suited for the dental field.
In 2002, I started my career as an associate with the intent to buy into the practice, which I eventually did in 2007. I was in a partnership with another dentist until 2010 but now have my own general practice. My practice offers many different services and prioritizes individualized attention. Although it is sometimes necessary, I do not like running between rooms and patients. I prefer to see one patient at a time.
Even when I first started practicing, I was very technology driven. We had a paperless office with digital radiography and a practice management program. Eventually, this turned into an interest in digital dentistry, 3D printing, and more advanced digital imaging.
Choosing a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) machine took me quite some time, but we finally invested in the ProVecta® 3D Prime from Air Techniques. At the time of purchase, I did not recognize how important this investment was going to be for my practice. I thought we were getting along just fine with the technology we had. Now, however, I can see that CBCT has added tremendous clinical value. The ProVecta 3D Prime features open CAD/CAM .STL integration and fast tracks the CBCT workflow with artificial intelligence (AI) features, such as auto nerve mapping and auto-optimized 3D panoramic imaging. In addition, the jaw-shaped volume provides the perfect field of view and prevents unnecessary exposure to radiation. The machine is easy to use, it takes a great image, and the software is intuitive. We use it for so many different procedures, including third molar extractions, the development of mixed dentition for orthodontics, and guided implant placements. We also use it for root canals, suspected fractures, and more.
Apart from the clinical benefits, CBCT has also had a huge impact on the practice regarding patient education. Trying to show patients what is going on in their mouths using a 2-inch film is much harder than showing them a detailed 3D image on a computer screen. Patients have been really impressed because receiving such clear images and communication is new to them.
New technology can impact the entire dental team, and there is always a learning curve. However, my team has been doing very well, and everyone is on board because the team can see the benefits. Although I was initially slow to invest in the technology, the impact that CBCT has had on my practice has been incredible.
