IDT | Collaboration Returns After Successful First Year

Event at GNYDM features numerous educational opportunities

As new technologies and treatment protocols arrive on the scene, effective collaboration between dentists and laboratory technicians becomes more important.

To help all dental stakeholders advance their approaches to patient care, Inside Dental Technology’s IDT | Collaboration returns November 30 through December 3 for its second year at the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, New York. IDT | Collaboration will feature at least 11 peer-reviewed team presentations, partnering industry leaders in the clinical and technical arenas, as well as dozens of other educational opportunities.

Last year’s GNYDM drew more than 53,000 dental professionals, including more than 1,100 laboratory professionals. It was the first-ever collaborative tradeshow for the entire dental team, and attendees from both sides lauded the concept.

“This was the first time I have experienced a true team approach to dentistry, with both dentists and technicians in an environment where all were sharing successes as well as challenges in an open forum,” said Brad Chott, director of operations at Keller Laboratories. “I am looking forward to attending in 2014!”

General dentist Ed Roman, DDS, of Washington, Pennsylvania, also praised the gathering of both groups.

“The Collaboration event provides the opportunity for dentists and laboratory professionals to bridge the gap in knowledge, understanding, and mutual appreciation of our respective professions,” Roman says. “I hope IDT | Collaboration will continue to grow!”

The 2014 IDT | Collaboration event will offer more than 50 available CE credits, highlighted by four peer-reviewed Inside Dental Technology team presentations. Each features a dentist and laboratory technician:

• Kenneth Malament, DDS, MScD, and Thomas Sing, MDT

• David Hornbrook, DDS, and Peter Pizzi, CDT, MDT

• Lily T. Garcia, DDS, MS, FACP, and Robert Kreyer, CDT

• Vincent Celenza, DMD, and Simon Wong, MDT

More than seven sponsored and peer-reviewed team presentations also are on the educational schedule. Gordon J. Christensen, DDS, MSD, PhD, will be conducting a Business Management session titled, “Top 10 Trends Impacting Tomorrow’s Dentist/Technician Team.”

Celenza and Wong, who work in the same New York office, will present “Communication Essentials for the Collaborative Dental Team” on Tuesday, December 2.

“For my practice, having a team available for sharing ideas and solving problems together is beneficial for everyone,” Celenza says.

With today’s tools, however, dentists and technicians do not need to share an office to work together closely and effectively. Several other presentations will focus on new technologies that facilitate communication between dentists and technicians who could be working thousands of miles apart.

Still more will center on best practices for other aspects of team dentistry. On Sunday, November 30, Malament and Sing will present “Integration of Esthetic Dentistry and Prosthodontics,” while Hornbrook and Pizzi will speak on “Esthetics, Implants, and Technology: Restorative Solutions for Today and Tomorrow.” On Monday, December 1, Kreyer and Garcia will offer “An Update on Removable and Implant Prosthodontics.”

“Collaboration emphasized the importance of a combined clinical and technical team approach to patient care,” says Dave Swedholm, fixed production manager at Keller Laboratories. “Combining the clinical and technical meeting under one roof created tremendous convenience and value.”

In addition to the presentations and workshops, IDT | Collaboration will feature approximately 30 exhibitors at 54 booths. New this year will be a Media Center, featuring product spotlights and demonstrations, as well as panel discussions.
