Zap Styla Microlaser: Revolutionary Design for Evolutionary Treatment

Dentistry’s first microlaser, Styla MicroLaser by Zap Lasers, weighs only 1.9 ounces; 20 times lighter than any other soft-tissue surgical laser on the market, yet is just as powerful. Styla is FDA-approved for the most common soft-tissue procedures like laser troughing and esthetic recontouring. Patients require little or minimal anesthetic during surgery, and experience faster healing times than traditional dentistry patients. In addition to 2 W of power, eight pre-set procedures, and continuous and pulsed modes, Styla’s innovative features include:

Lightweight aluminum body: Tough enough to withstand the daily demands of a busy dental office, yet lightweight and ergonomically balanced, so it remains comfortable even after long periods of use (Figure 1).

Pre-threaded disposable tips: These tips eliminate the need for scoring and stripping. Precisely placed magnets perfectly align and secure the tip for an exact connection every time (Figure 2).

Intelligent gravity sensor: The sensor automatically detects the microlaser’s orientation and adjusts Styla’s display to be read whether operated left- or right-handed.

Compact charger base: Styla’s sleek, compact charger base does double duty as both a resting place between procedures and a powerful battery charger capable of simultaneously charging three batteries in less than an hour (Figure 3).

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries: Styla comes with two rechargeable lithium ion batteries. A single battery can run for more than 20 minutes without interruption—enough power for over 15 procedures. Fully charged, battery stand-by time is over 8 hours.

Wireless foot pedal: Styla’s wireless foot pedal uses advanced 2.4 GHz wireless technology to securely communicate with Styla’s main body (Figure 4).

Dentist Benefits

Most dentists would like to deliver the well-documented benefits of laser dentistry to their patients, but are too inhibited by concerns about investment costs and learning curve to incorporate a laser into their practice. Styla’s revolutionary design eliminates these concerns.

Compact, ergonomic, wireless, and non-threatening to dentists and patients, Styla’s flexibility and comfort in the operatory is already finding acceptance from clinicians who previously regarded dental lasers as complicated and cumbersome. The microlaser’s compact size and wireless design significantly improves the way dentists using surgical laser devices operate on a daily basis by allowing them to easily move around and between operatories.

Incorporating a laser into a practice allows dentists to perform common procedures more precisely and quickly. For example, Styla dentists are able to obtain bloodless impressions with clearly exposed margins in seconds, without retraction cord. And, because the microlaser comes with the reassurance of training and easy-to-use preset procedures, dentists can focus on delivering top-notch patient care and perform surgical procedures with minimal discomfort, swelling, and pain more effortlessly than ever before.

Patient Benefits

Among the greatest advantages of laser treatment over traditional dental methods are that patients require little or no anesthesia and experience less discomfort, no bleeding, fast healing, and elimination of gum recession. Furthermore, lasers are more precise than scalpels when cutting and create a more predictable, consistent, and desired result upon healing.

Case Presentation: Laser Troughing

Among the most commonly used soft-tissue laser procedures, laser troughing eliminates one of the most frustrating, unpredictable, and time-consuming procedures in the dental office—packing retraction cord.

Not only are bloodless impressions with clearly exposed margins possible using Styla, but also, unlike electrosurgery, the microlaser eliminates worries about instruments inadvertently coming into contact with adjacent metal restorations and shocking the patient. Additionally, lasing improves visualization of prepared crown margins and aids in hemostasis, so crowns and bridges are sure to fit properly every time. Plus, fast healing and no recession mean tissues look great at the cementation appointment.

Technique

Getting a perfect impression the first time is not luck; it is a matter of proper lasing technique. After tooth preparation, use the laser with 1.2 W to 1.4 W of power. Place the fiber approximately 1 mm to 2 mm below the crown margin and gently circumscribe the margin 360°, always keeping the working angle parallel to the long axis of the tooth. Hemostasis and delineation of the crown margin will happen at the same time. Wash and dry the preparation and take final impressions immediately. Tissue recession will not occur as using laser technology provides the user predictable and clean impressions every time (Figure 5 and Figure 6).

Conclusion

Styla delivers better results while simultaneously benefiting the patient and the practice. By delivering all of the benefits of la-ser treatment, such as less pain and risk of complication, in a revolutionary hand-held, wireless design, Styla provides dentists with unprecedented freedom in the office and the operatory. This makes delivering the highest standard of patient care to more patients faster and easier than ever before.
